Faith Against the Wolves

A professional transporter of supernatural goods has his faith tested when given a chest that contains something allegedly touched by God.

Meet Travis Rail, a professional transporter of supernatural goods. Aside from his martial arts proficiency, skill behind the wheel and solid track record of deliveries, what makes him qualified to do what he does is that he doesn't believe in the supernatural claims of his clients - which keeps him objective, honest and detached.

Or so he thought.

When his latest client has him transport a chest containing something allegedly touched by Jesus, his world gets turned upside down. Not twenty minutes into the delivery the Rift show up - an underground cult hell-bent on collecting all of the treasures of God. However, it turns out that not only were they after the chest, they were after Travis as well.

"Who exactly are the Rift? Why do they want him dead? And is what he's transporting truly of Jesus?"

In his quest for answers, Travis is reluctantly thrust into another delivery, transporting yet another one of God's treasures. And the closer he gets to completing this delivery, the more he learns that what he's delivering might just be bigger than the package itself.

Jonathan Chateau grew up reading books by Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Michael Crichton. However, it was Fight Club--both the 1996 novel by Chuck Palahniuk and the 1999 film by David Fincher--that inspired him to pursue writing. He has also had a love of movies since he was five and was even named after James Caan's character, Jonathan E, from the 1975 cult classic, Rollerball.

He has completed five novels, Nightmares in Analog, The Death Wish Game, Faith Against the Wolves, and Faith Against the Angels. His fifth book, The Sprawling, is slated for release next year.

When Jonathan's not writing, he's working out, painting table-top miniatures like those from Warhammer or the Walking Dead, playing way-too-many video games, eating spicy food, jamming out to Emo & EDM, or spending time with his family, friends and his spoiled cats, Boo (the Dork) & Luna (the Princess.)

He lives in Tampa, Florida and loves hearing from his readers, so stop by and say hello:

This book is incredible. Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. I read it in 3 days. What a page turner it was. The book had a clear story line and kept the reader hooked from the very beginning. The author made it so the story was very unpredictable. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, having no idea what could possibly happen next. I would think one thing was going to happen only to have the author take it in a complete different direction. Done amazingly might I add. My interest was never lost throughout the book. There was nothing but suspense from beginning to end. Jonathan Chateau ended the book with me wanting nothing else but to read the next book in the series. Faith Against the Wolves will keep your attention through every page. It's a book you won't be able to put down. Definitely worth the read. Believe me when I say you won't be disappointed.

When I started this, the first thing I heard was, "This is Faith Against the Wolves, a supernatural thriller." It's quite insistent about being a SUPERNATURAL thriller, insistent enough to put it in the tile of the Audible tract. Which is all well and good, except that it isn't just a supernatural thriller. It's a Christian thriller, maybe a Christian supernatural thriller or supernatural Christian thriller, but that Christian really can't be left out and maintain honesty. I've read plenty of books that use religious material as plot fodder and plenty more that have subtle (and not so subtle) religious themes. This is neither of those. This is a flat out religious book. I would go so far as to call it a homily on prayer even. I mean, an angel (among others) comes to Earth to lecture the main character on how to properly pray, for goodness sake.

And I have no problem with it Christian stories generally. But I'm not a fan of proselytizing on the best day and I'm really not a fan of the sneak attack. If an author wants to write religious fiction, fine, but be honest about what it is!

Outside of my annoyance about it not being honest with it's sub-genre, I thought it was an OK read (listen). An awful lot of it consists of Travis getting beat up and I might quibble with the oh-so-cliched use of a woman using her sexuality as a weapon as a villain. But it has a story that moves along nicely and I appreciate that, for religious fiction, it at least acknowledged Christianity's bloody past. Chris Rice did a fine job with the narration, though I noticed a few grammatical mistakes. Hard to tell who those fall on though, the author or narrator, but there you have it.

All in all, I'd call this a fine, but not outstanding read for me, personally. Your mileage may vary.

I found myself struggling to get through this one at times however enjoyed the premise of this book. I am waiting to see where the series will go next. The action in this book is great. The characters are flawed, and at times will get on your nerves but you genuinely find yourself caring for them. It is a very cool idea having supernatural goods being transported throughout America and there’s always someone vying for what you have on you. At times, I found it somewhat hard to believe that this character does not believe in what he’s transporting. There was also many times where I thought the fighting, or hardships the characters were experiencing sort of wrapped up to nicely. I would’ve like to see them have to fight a little bit more for their solution or to get to the next step in the process. I know I’m being quite critical of this work but I think it had very much going for it and a lot of potential. The narration was quite good and I find myself enjoying the tone, sarcasm and fun he must of had completing this work. I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from audiobook boom. This in no way affected my opinion of this work.

Faith Against the Wolves is a fun joyride of a read across Florida. Jonathon Chateau clearly has an advanced degree in dialogue and hard-boiled metaphor, but don't think that this makes "Faith" a hard-boiled detective story. It is a story about faith and God and finding your place in the world while also being a gun-loving, action-paced, sarcastic-mouthed read. The main character, Travis Rail, is a non-believer who works as a transporter of "rare antiquities" (my steal from Indiana Jones, not the author's) for a clandestine group. As it turns out, these items are Biblical, and the groups hiding or seeking them fall on either side of Heaven and Hell.

As much as I liked the book, I could excuse some of the circular religious debate in the middle of the book. However, the author never tallies on the circular arguments too long, just kind of elbows you to remind you of the stakes, and then it is off to another gunfight. Consider me a fan, now. I can't wait for the next Travis Rail adventure!

The book has an interesting plot. Part Constantine, part Transporter. However, I'm not sure who the audience is. On one hand, there's the action and the adventure aspect. The main character is a driver of divine items for a secret group that protect's holy artifacts from the big bad group. On the other hand, there seems to be a very specific message about Jesus and faith within it. The main character, Travis, who is the tough loner with a moral leaning but no direct belief in the items he's transporting or the groups is not very likable. You are suppose to like him because he's the main character good guy. On top of that, there is a lot of cursing in the book so this isn't going to be found in your church library anytime soon.

If the story was that like Constantine where the divine objects played a bigger role and more were used in the story line it would add to the adventure a lot more. Travis is a tough guy but I never really got a sense of who he was as his character kept being revealed throughout the story. Having an upfront overview of him would let me know if I'm suppose to think of him as someone like a Stallone "Over The Top" trucker or an Indiana Jones type person. I see he fights because I'm told he can. He can hold his own because I'm told he can. He can sustain a lot of punishment because I'm told he can. But there's nothing that's revealed about his character or backstory that leads me to those understandings. I know Indiana Jones is tough and smart because he gets the gold statue before he searches for the Ark. That type of storytelling tells me a lot about his character. Another thing that didn't work for me was the driving description. For example, in one scene Travis is suppose to be driving really fast because someone is tailing his friends. But he's 20 minutes away from them and other than speeding there's not a lot of skill that I see that would make me think he'd be of any help.

Overall, this book wasn't for me. I didn't relate to the character. While I'm one for appreciating a book that promotes a Christian salvation message, here it seemed really out of place and the results didn't show any change that wasn't for selfish ends. I won't be continuing the series; but this wasn't an awful book. Final Grade - D+

I got a free copy of this at my own request and I voluntarily provided a review, but if I had paid full price for this I wouldn't even regret it, and I hate paying full price for anything.

So I honestly wasn't expecting much from this, I listened to the demo and the wording was very clipped and tense, lots of one word sentences and such. I was leery, but figured that kind of writing has its place when a situation calls for it, and it seemed to call for it in the actual events that were going on. I am so glad I decided to give it a try.

I have been reading urban fantasy for a long time. Religious discussions are one of my favorite topics. This book slammed them both together in a way I haven't seen before and it was so entertaining. It's not often the hero is an 30-something glorified delivery man. Travis was still very relatable though, especially for me. He had genuine characterization and personality beyond the snark and smack talk that so many urban fantasy leads have, which I love but how often do people talk like that? The snark and such was still there but a little more down to earth and realistic; even in a world where dark magic and divine powers are colliding in front of Travis while he tries to figure out where he stands in the fight.

I can say for certain that I will be listening to this again and that I'll be watching for more from this author. Silly to say, but it gives me hope that there are still writers who can take the old and make something new and wonderful out of it.

Travis Rail is a transporter. He picks up packages and delivers them. He is told these items are artifacts that possess supernatural powers. Travis does not believe in the supernatural, but he is good behind the wheel and good in a fight. When Travis is attacked by a group of people called "The Rift", he finds out that they are not only after artifacts but him as well. Travis is determined to finish this one last job so he can retire but it turns out a lot harder than he thought.

The story starts off strong with good action and plenty of mystery. About halfway in however, the narrative starts to get a bit of a "preachy" feel to it. The Preachy message also starts to get a little repetitive. At some points it felt more like Christian fiction however, the book is also fairly violent, gory, and the use of profanity would turn off most people looking for a Christian message. If you can get past this, there is enough of a story underneath to keep it interesting though I did have to skip forward 10-20 seconds a few times.

The Audiobook is narrated by Chris Rice. Chris does a great job narrating the action scenes and the main character. The one weakness to his narration (at least in this performance) was his female characters could have been done better.

This is the first instalment in a serie of books. You can read it by himself but it will leave you longing for more. Hopefully book two is on writing!
The story is packed with action right from the beginning (really, like the first sentence!) and it never slows down. There are no boring moments or anything in the story to complain about, and the writing style is something I've already learned to appreciate since this is my third book from the author.
What was sort of hard for me to relate to was the religious part. I have to say that it helped the fact that I completely agreed with the reactions to the matter that the main character had. He was often pissed off about christian talk, and I was too! He will progress through the story and tries not to be angry at God, which is obviously a good thing, but he will remain sort of rebellious until the end, which is more human I think. Let's see how this thing evolves in the next book, I'm curious, since the book was a little preachy, but the author normally is not, and that makes me really curious about the developments..
I have been contacted by the author that gave me a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This story is about someone that protects religious artifacts from getting into the wrong hands. I was really into this book, was thinking how much I loved it but about 1/3 of the way through it felt at points like it was too 'preachy'. So, I enjoyed the book but wish that the last 2/3 of the book had a little less of the stuff that felt like a sermon. I think it had a good amount of action and I liked the characters. It didn't feel like the ending should have been the ending, I felt like it was leading to the next chapter but there wasn't one!

This was a fun fantasy read about a courier for religious artifacts. I requested and won the free book because of the fantasy aspect. However, be prepared to be beaten over the head with the religious implications. To be fair, Faith is in the title, and he does deal in Blessed objects from the Bible. Jonathan Chateau does start out presenting a plausible argument for both the agnostic and the faithful; Surprise, (Spoiler) faith wins out with a little help via Deus Ex Machina. Which of course "proves" the faith side. Overall a good, enjoyable read for the Sci-fi and well planned story line.

Faith Against the Wolves is an interesting combination of literature genres. There is plenty of action and gore as well as harsh language, but the entire plot is centered around the importance of faith. The faith aspect got very preachy at times, but overall the story moved at a good enough pace that it did not become too much of an issue.

While I didn't find myself relating to Travis as a main character he is grounded in real feelings and trauma so even with the spiritual supernatural elements I could understand why he took the actions he did.

I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

Travis is what is called a transporter. He is a deliverer of items. When he finds himself in trouble that is when readers are the ones who get to take a wild supernatural ride. This is a well written story and I feel readers of several different genres will love this book and find that it is a quick read because it is not only compelling but well written. The author knows how to write heart stopping adventure and the character of Travis is well done and like talking to an old friend. There is a bit of swearing but the story is worth grabbing.

I received a free Kindle copy of this book through Goodreads' giveaway program.

I don't really know how to feel about this book. On one hand, it's a hard biting action thriller fantasy, but then it's also a really religious story that wouldn't be misshelved as Christian fiction. I'm not sure what this story is trying to be. It also gets really preachy. To sum up my feelings: meh.

I won this awhile back in a Goodreads giveaway. Thus is the first thing I've read by the author.

I'm a little torn by this book. On the one hand it was pretty preachy and pushed prayer throughout the book. On the other had it was a fun read with likeable characters and a quick pace that rarely let's up. In the end I knocked it down a star for being overly preachy.

It's amazing how a new book, anew story line, and a new to you author can change your perspective on things.

I'd like to point out I won this book in a giveaway. It was in the paranormal section. It's my normal genre. It keeps me interested, but I am one of those readers that given a a chance I will diverge from the norm. Sometimes it works and sometimes I don't even finish the book.

This book, this author, this story line amazed me. I don't say that lightly either. It started out as a hmm.. "the author's writing style is interesting." Keep on reading. Then it went to "this author is actually cracking me up while I'm reading, I must do an update with one of his witty lines." Amazingly it finished with "wow this author just blew me away with a story line I couldn't have imagined would have formed and finished the way it did."

One of those laugh out loud lines from the book? "You're about as inked up as a restroom wall at a truck stop." I literally giggled so loud, the people that was sitting around me starred. Don't judge, I was sitting a car dealership waiting for my new truck to get it's spray in bed liner. :p

At any rate, this story has a ton of cussing, which reminds me of myself, it has an introspective quality to it in so much as, how you stand with God and your faith. But then it gets to the paranormal part. Angels, half-angels, religious cults, zealots.. And the best part, this book was so good it didn't even need the obligatory sex that a lot need to help get over the "hump" per se.

I'm not going to tell you about the book, if you want to know, read the jacket blurb. But I can tell you, if you pass up this author or this book then you are making one hell of a mistake.

Mr. Jonathan Chateau just made his way on to my to read list. Can't wait to pick up his other books.

I'd give him more then 5 stars if I could.

Great urban-fantasy thriller from a self published author

This novel was a pleasant surprise in the realm of self publishing authors. Expertly written, with a fantastically exciting pace, this book was nearly impossible to put down once started. With a writing style reminiscent of the urban fantasy works of Larry Correia in his Monster Hunter International series, I was hooked quickly on the plot of this novel. I look forward to any forthcoming works from this author, and hope for a sequel soon!

I'd recommend this book to any fans of supernatural fiction and thrillers. It does not become too fantasy, as can happen quickly in some books, and focuses more on the gods and angels aspect of urban fantasy that is rarely touched.

This is the second book I have read by this author. The story was a bit slow at the beginning, but it began to gain momentum towards the middle and then the story grabbed you. I like the premise of the story; and Travis is the type of character that you have a love/ hate relationship with. He is gifted, yet because of his mindset, he is very flawed. His faith, or lack of is challenged. I would like to see how he develops more in the next book.

This is the first book in the Travis Fail series

I really liked this book it wasn't too preachy or over the top plus the main character was likable . The villains where truly evil but they had a story that I could relate too they where product's of their upbringing which was tragic . I'm looking forward the more from this Author and this series .
