For almost two decades, the US government has been using prisoners for high-risk medical trials. When labeled Non-Compliant, a prisoner may consent to acquire a fatal disease for research rather than face the death penalty. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Abigail Warren's life looks picture perfect except for one glaring reality. It's back, her cancer that is. And after a fateful night on a winding road, Abigail begins to question the ethical standing of the governmental system that has kept her alive all these years, the very system her father helped create. But when Abigail endeavors to save the life of her life-long Non-Compliant match, her decision comes at a steeper price than she could have ever imagined.
I don't normally read the dystopian genre, but the author of Compliant limited the societal corruption to establish the setting for her conflict, and she didn't stray from this focus. The result was that I found the setting totally believable. I believe her conflict was intended to question medical ethics, but the criminal justice system is given equal weight. And perhaps due to timing, I read into this the consequences of low voter turnout. Good writing leaves everything open to interpretation and makes you think. This was a good read.
This book has a fantastic message. For that I give it five stars. When I began reading I thought it would be just another dystopian read. I was wrong. There were a few times when I felt it moved a little slow, but then it picked back up. I felt the world building was very well done. Character development was great. And the story itself very well done. Thus book addresses the need to stop looking the other way when there are wrongs being done. It gave hope in that with determination wrong choices can be changed and love always will give the ultimate sacrifice. I would recommend thus book for anyone over the age of 15. If you are considering reading this book, stop considering and just do it!
An interesting dystopian story that is a easy, fast paced read. A good thought provoking story with likable characters. Overall I thought this was an intriguing story that kept me from putting down the book.
