From the moment best selling Japanese novelist Hiraku Makimura lands in Sydney to speak at a writers’ seminar, there is an identity mix-up; a body surfaces in the boot of a Subaru without a rational explanation; the hotel receptionist is a distraction but no help when the Police investigate. And when a more mature woman with her own literary agenda instigates a cruise on Sydney Harbour the Japanese visitor experiences an improbable rendezvous with the submerged past that rocks him to the core of his being. The Japanese midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbour has never been told with such irreverence, bringing to the surface a saga survival, seedy details of internment, infatuation and itinerant intercourse on remote Lord Howe Island.
This novel's shtick is wondering how the two timelines interact: one is set in Australia during WW2, the other in Sydney in the present. The writing style is pretty good. But I was left puzzled by some of the characters' motivations quite often. All in all, an interesting read.
