Este año tengo como propósito personal leer más manga, y Livingstone ha sido uno de los que primero me han entrado por el ojo. Aparte de su portada, todo aquello que hable sobre el alma o temas como la muerte siempre se lleva mi atención. En el manga tendremos una pareja de shinigamis protagonista, Amano y Sakurai, que se dedican a buscar a los pobres desafortunados a punto de morir o en su defecto, recuperar las piedras del alma de las víctimas.El 90% de nuestra existencia esta predeterminada por nuestra alma, pero existen zonas contaminadas por otras almas que pueden perturbar nuestro plan de existencia.

Excelente y adictiva narrativa, un dibujo precioso y un humor negro muy conseguido. El contrapunto que establece la pareja protagonista es de lo mejor. El manga se divide en cinco capítulos que son como cinco escenas separadas pero que sirven para que vayamos conociendo el funcionamiento y a dichos protagonistas, aunque espero mucho más tras los dos últimos que ya cuentan un caso más completo. Te hace pensar sobre la muerte, sobre ciertos temas morales o algunos gestos cotidianos que tenemos con dicho acto. Me ha dejado con ganas de más, tanto que ya vienen para casa los tres volúmenes restantes.

An interesting and intriguing start to a new manga series. Two guys work as soul savers for a company called Livingstone where their job is to help suicides, either to stop them or to save their souls before they complete the action. This first volume concentrates on character and getting the reader up to speed on what is actually going on. Thus, we get to know Sakurai, a by-the-book agent and his partner, Amano who has no soul himself as they work on several cases which range from sad to scary to strange. There is more needed. But for a first volume, a lot is presented and leaves me eager to read the second volume of this seinen to find out what the "more" is all about.

Me ha gustado mucho este primer tomo. Cómo normalmente me llaman la atención las historias que tratan, de forma clara y directa, la vida y la muerte temía que no me sorprendiera el manga, pero me equivoqué. Aborda de forma muy particular el tema de la almas, la ascensión, la vida, la muerte y el efecto de esta en la sociedad y/o personas. Hay casos muy interesantes.

De hecho, los dos primeros capítulos son excelentes. Los protagonistas y su relación promete. A ver qué tal el segundo tomo, todo pinta bastante dramático.

Tadinya aku ngebayangin ceritanya kayak nyelamatin orang gitu, dan bukannya menghabisi orang dengan cara yang ga keren gini... orz

Tema 'kematian' dan 'orang-orang yang berurusan dengan kematian' sering muncul di budaya fiksi Jepang, khususnya komik. Saya cenderung suka, karena mereka seringkali membahas kematian bukan sebagai sesuatu yang tabu atau harus ditakuti. Livingstone juga termasuk karya demikian; memandang dan memaknai kematian sebagai alat refleksi diri terhadap kehidupan itu sendiri. Dengan plot yang berkisar soal 'batu kehidupan'.... dan orang-orang yang bertugas memberi restu atau merapikan tatanan kehidupan yang menyimpang....

.....oke, saya jujur saja, 'sistem kematian' dan pekerjaan kedua tokoh utama di buku ini lumayan membingungkan buat saya.

Sebenarnya, premis bahwa kedua tokoh utamanya tidak bersifat heroik (*menolong orang memperbaiki kehidupan dan menyuntikkan semangat hidup baru, misalnya) membuat komik ini lumayan unik. Saya suka bagian soal pembahasan keterpenuhan hidup, dan bahwa ada kalanya kematian seseorang justru diperlukan demi keseimbangan sesuatu yang lebih besar... namun, dilema moral soal itu kurang tersampaikan dengan baik. Entah otak saya yang lemah mencerna atau bagaimana, setiap kali karakter-karakternya membicarakan soal mekanisme batu dan sistem kehidupan di komik ini, saya langsung merasa itu terlalu ruwet dan mengesampingkan aspek humanis yang seharusnya jadi 'jiwa' dalam setiap cerita yang bicara tentang kematian.

Paling tidak, saya menikmati gambarnya, yang menurut saya merupakan aspek terbaik dari seri ini. Garis-garis gambarnya kuat, tegas, dan sedap dipandang, khususnya saat panel close-up pada ekspresi karakternya. Hubungan kedua tokoh utama yang merupakan partner kerja juga bisa jadi hiburan tersendiri bagi pembaca yang menggandrungi komedi (dan/atau bromance) dari interaksi dua pria yang kepribadiannya bertolak belakang.

Ceritanya sendiri berjalan episodik, sebelum terfokus di satu setengah volume terakhir pada soal masa lalu salah satu protagonisnya. Ada sejumlah ide dan dialog menarik di momen-momen episodik maupun plot utama, tapi entah kenapa, secara keseluruhan kurang ada sesuatu yang berkesan mendalam bagi saya. Masih nanggung, seperti berada di tengah-tengah antara mau sentimentil (yang harusnya dibuat jauh lebih humanis dan mengharu-biru daripada ini) atau mau benar-benar gelap (yang kadar kepahitan maupun keberaniannya masih terasa kurang)~

Not sure how to feel about this manga. Great art and clear storytelling to follow. I like that the main focus is unusual and inventive - on stones, unfulfilled soul potential and reincarnation.
But personally I didn't like the undertones of "suicide is not okay, and it drags other people down too". But that's a personal preference of not wanting people to be told they don't have a choice to live or not, like suicide is a sin sh**.
I'll try the second novel and see if it develops into a more interesting and complex world system.

The start of the series is promising. It's a solid urban fantasy with an interesting mechanic, good interaction between the characters, an exploration of the human psyche, of destiny and our place in the world. The standard manga tropes seem fewer or at least less intrusive. There are some ethical concerns about human life that may turn some people of. While there is some humor and the main characters make light of life and death, there is depth here as well.

Sakurai and Amano have a very special job - to take care of souls. Destiny handles most of what a soul goes through, but it can stray from the path and cause damage on a spiritual plane. The damage can then afflict other loving people, unless it's cleaned by Sakurai who handles the physical side - the human body - and Amano who handles the living stone - a physical manifestation of the soul. The two ensure that souls reach maturity by harvesting the souls of the departed via the living stones and by helping the people still living to cope with their lives.

The two have multiple encounters - with a man on the verge of commiting suicide, a construction worker who sees himself responsible for a coworker's death. A more serious case is that of a female accountant who intends to throw herself off a building. She embezzled money and killed a man before deciding to end her own life. Sakurai finds that her soul is an old and important one, worthy of saving, but the woman, not at all regretful of her misdeeds, still wants to kill herself and get away from her hardships. Sakurai does something unusual to save her soul - a soul quelling that moves her soul into the body of the man she killed. Thus the soul is saved and can reach maturity.

Just as a warning this series contains some strong language, suicide attempts, actual death, as well as one scene of molestation that did not quite lead to rape. As such this series created by the same person that created Deadman's Wonderland probably should not be read by anyone not in their older teens or older. I will let you decide if your younger readers will be able to handle such themes before letting them read it.

90% of a person's life is predetermined. This is the premise of this series as partners Amano and Sakurai are deployed to certain places to offer a person a chance to give up their souls if they wish to die so it can be nurtured until it is ready for a new host. With Amano having no soul of his own Sakurai has his work cut out for him as the two of them retrieve souls and clean up stains of negative energies created by souls that have been broken unexpectedly before their time. So far between character interactions and the interesting cases the duo handle I have been happy with what I have read so far. :)

Un manga de tono reflexivo muy interesante. Los dos primeros tomos, más episódicos, profundizan en el sentido de la vida y en el alma humana, mientras que los dos últimos siguen un hilo principal que permite profundizar en los protagonistas, sin olvidar los temas de la obra. El dibujo es exquisito, y logra equilibrar detalle con naturalidad, dando como resultado unas imágenes preciosas con unos diseños muy realistas. Si buscáis un manga que os aporte algo, no sé a qué estáis esperando.

3.5. The beginning was a bit disjointed, but the last story (and the longest) was the most interesting. I think it would have been better had it been first with one of the other stories mixed in or just taken out and the last one lengthened. Interesting start to the series, I might pick up the next one.

Seperti biasa, kalau masih jilid 1, penilaian(?) saya belum fix, sifatnya masih sementara. Lagian ini nilai bintang yang banyak biasnya: saya suka gaya gambarnya, perpaduan abang kacamata super patuh aturan dan dedek manis yang super egois dan blak-blakan, ada om-om detektif ganteng (meski cuma figuran, saya ngarep beliau dapet porsi muncul lebih banyak), dan yang terpenting........... PANDA!!! Wuhuuuuuu~~~ ada panda!! Saya juga kepengen naik panda-pandaan itu! Maaf, saya kayak gak inget umur aja. Mungkin jalan keluarnya(???) adalah: saya cepet-cepet punya anak supaya saya bisa naik panda-pandaan buat nemenin anak saya itu #salah


Setelah diliat baik-baik, dibanding warna cokelat susu, warna sampulnya ini lebih mendekati kopi susu sih. Duh. Pokoknya inget sampul Livingstone inget kopi susu atau cokelat susu. Slurp.

Selain itu, saya entah kenapa......... kurang sreg sama logonya ||||orzzzzzzzzzz

Bukan cuma dengan bentuknya yang melintir-melintir(?) dan berkesan eeer...gothic(?) itu, tapi juga warna hijau lumut(?)nya. Ugh. Entah kenapa bikin saya keingetan band rock atau metal? Eeeuuuuhh... apa tuh? Eeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrr.... *nanti saya edit kalau udah inget band yang saya maksud* ====edit===== ROLLING STONE!!! *jlegeeer* *mungkin karena nama judulnya mirip-mirip: Livingstone dengan Rolling Stone?* *maap ini sama sekali gak ada kaitannya, tapi entah kenapa kebayang-bayang mulu di benak saya tiap kali liat komik Livingstone*
Mungkin juga karena aksen gothic di logo versi lokal gak cocok sama tema Livingstone. Eh? Termasuk font tipe gothic kan ya? Aye sok tau bener lah. Abaikan saja.

Tapi liat logo versi inggrisnya juga makin gak sreg, macem komik superhero yang banyak alien gitu (mungkin karena warnanya ijo mentereng?).
Cuma logo versi jepang doang yang saya demen. Mungkin karena sederhana.
Selera lah.


Yang penting, saya ini mesti baca jilid selanjutnya dulu buat ngomentarin isi ceritanya.

This one is a strange one probably more a 3.5 than 4 but the art is very good and the story interesting so rounding up it is.

This one, at the moment, is episodic fic with no overriding story arc. Sakuri is a rather uptight, mission-oriented, dress suited agent for Livingstone, an organization that monitors 'psycholiths,' the soul stone. They find souls in danger of straying from their set paths and try to set them right. They also clean up 'stains' left behind by tragedy. These stains can soak a soul and pull it down into the darkness.

Sakuri is capable of unraveling himself so he can read a soul (he also has a computer that has the life plots of everyone in it). He is heavily affected by the emotions he reads. He tries hard to help people.

His partner is Amano, who looks more like a kid. The back cover blurb describes him as a 'free spirit.' However, I got from him more of a sociopathic lack of empathy. Amano wants to kill them all, stop them now to save their soul and let the next life sort it out.

There is at least two attempted suicides and one accidental death in all of this. This has the potential to be a morally challenging book. Is it better to commit suicide than to live with the guilt of what you did and let it destroy your soul and its chance at the next life? Will removing the stains help? The last and longest arc has a questionable solution brought on not by the person holding the soul now but by how wonderful and old this soul is and their desire not to see it tainted.

I'm certainly going to try a little more of this, though I think it might be a challenge to pull off well. It reminds me a lot of Nightmare Inspector which had the advantage of being about dreams which could be as weird as the mangaka wanted them to be. Real life might be a tad more limiting.

Es un buen inicio para la serie, pero le veo algunos problemas que, por suerte, tiene tres tomos para ir solucionando.

Para empezar, su premisa parte de un concepto interesante: la naturaleza del alma y cómo se imbrica con una especie de predestinación. La ironía de que haya un grupo encargado de cumplir ese destino a toda costa logra que el lector reevalúe hasta qué punto los seres humanos gozan de libertad con respecto a sus vidas. Invita a la reflexión sin perderse en su mensaje: en última instancia, es la persona la que decide si morir o cumplir su plan.

Entonces entra la última de las tres historias que componen el tomo y la cosa se complica. Surge una nueva pregunta: ¿y si el alma en cuestión resulta tener un futuro prometedor? ¿Hay que salvarla aun a costa de la libertad de la persona? La pregunta da para mucho y, durante la mitad del tomo, el manga se dedica a explorarla. Estas tensiones entre el punto de vista de Sakurai, un apologista de la vida simplemente por el futuro del alma, y el de la chica, una pasota que no da mucha importancia ni a la vida ni a la muerte, friccionan hasta dar con una solución válida para ambos, protegiendo el alma al tiempo que se mata el cuerpo. Me gusta que la solución sea otro debate más: ¿puede alguien vivir en el cuerpo de una persona odiosa únicamente para cumplir con un destino futuro mayor? La respuesta parece positiva, y es ahí donde me encuentro con un par de problemas.

En las dos primeras historias, el manga adoptaba una posición más bien neutra, no tanto de comprender al otro como de dejarlo decidir por sí mismo. Sin embargo, hacia la tercera (y un poco la segunda), Sakurai comienza a inmiscuirse en asuntos humanos. En la segunda historia, puedo aceptarlo; al fin y al cabo, solo hace una pequeña acción que respeta los deseos del "cliente". En la tercera, tanto Amano como Sakurai actúan en contra de los deseos de la chica para el cambio de alma. Lo que podría ser un debate interesantísimo se resuelve yendo por un rumbo que veo algo cobarde: hacer que todos terminen contentos en un par de páginas. Que sí, comprendo que el drama de una persona como la que nos han mostrado (pasota y poco apegada a la vida) sea menor, pero la resolución no deja de ser una violación a sus derechos humanos y un cambio sustancial a lo que hasta entonces conocía como su vida.

Esta superficialidad me parece que llega a todo el guion. Si bien es capaz de tratar sus conceptos debidamente y con un toque de humor negro (bastante hit or miss, por cierto), creo que las entrañas del debate se quedan en paradero desconocido. ¿Va ligada el alma a la memoria? ¿Y al corazón? A las dos respuestas parece ser que sí, pero entonces ¿por qué la gente no recuerda sus vidas pasadas? Además, ¿de verdad hace bien Maekawa al basar su obra en una investigación médica probadamente simplista y de hace más de un siglo? A la hora de profundizar en asuntos tan complejos e inabarcables como la naturaleza del alma o su relación con el ser humano, el manga entero parece caerse bajo un mínimo de escrutinio.

Así que sí, el guion es tan hit or miss como su humor. Con todo, no creo que haga demasiadas cosas mal. Es tan solo que se queda en una perspectiva simple y no es capaz de debatir con matices. En el resto de apartados, de hecho, cumple sin problemas: el dibujo de Kataoka es espectacular (ninguna sorpresa sabiendo que había trabajado antes en Deadman Wonderland), los personajes tienen el punto justo de carisma y conflictos personales como para ser memorables, y la atmósfera que crea mezclando lo más oscuro del ser humano con la rutina de los protagonistas y su particular humor es algo que funciona.

Al final, mi problema con este tomo es que no termino de ver hacia dónde va. Si es hacia conceptos tratados someramente, no estoy especialmente interesado, pero ya he dicho al principio de esta cosa que el manga tiene margen de mejora. Con los temas y personajes que se gasta, tiene potencial para mucho. Solo espero que en los siguientes tres tomos los autores se den cuenta de que han picado oro y de que, en efecto, pueden hacerse mineros de puta madre si aprovechan los materiales.

I had some trepidation about checking out the first three volumes of this series from my local library when I saw the cover tag, "From the creator of Deadman Wonderland," since that series, while intriguing, had a storyline that was too much of a hot mess for me. Fortunately, the artist is the creator in question, and this series has a different writer who is very much in control of his story. Or I should say stories, as this Livingstone consists of many self-contained stories that build together to flesh out the central concept and its consequences. An odd couple pair of agents (one is uptight and overthinks everything, the other speaks bluntly and acts spontaneously) investigate a new case in each episode and provide a through line that gradually grows into its own story. Livingstone is a little bit X-Files and Twilight Zone, but mostly reminds me of Ikigami: The Ultimate Limit, Volume 1 in its structure.

Hace mucho tiempo que un Manga no duraba tan poco en mis manos y es que realmente me encantó.
Con un dibujo de escenarios detallado, personajes muy bien diseñados y con personalidades interesantes y definidas, una premisa quizá no tan novedosa como lo son la muerte y los Shinigamis, y con historias realmente atrapantes, hace que éste Manga, apesar de ser más de lo mismo, se transforme en una lectura entretenida y dinámica. Imposible no simpatizar con sus 2 protagonistas, tan distintos entre si, pero que por aquella misma razón, se complementan perfectamente.
Un primer Tomo interesante, que deja las espectativas muy altas para leer el segundo, asi que aqui estoy, ansiosa por comenzarlo.

I pretty much read this because same creator as Deadman wonderland and well I can totally see it with the way it’s written and looks, the characters are easily distinguishable, the story concept is very interesting which is good but this first volume was just cookie cutter, when dealing with the concept of people who know how people die and clean it up, there’s so much potential here and I’m hoping they do a lot in the next volumes because it’s a short series but there’s so much you can work with here

This was very enjoyable, and I think I will definitely read the following three books in the series. This first volume gave off some serious Noragami vibes; in tone, themes and subject matter. While this wasn't necessarily a bad thing, the fact that Livingstone's Amano and Noragami's Yukine look extremely similar made it quite hard to stop the Noragami comparisons whilst I was reading. I do look forward to reading more, and seeing if there will be more of an overarching plot.

I randomly found this manga at the library and thought the cover was cool, so I decided to give it a read. I thought the concept was cool, and I wasn't a fan of the artwork, but I didn't dislike it either. The main issue was that it was kind of repetitive, it just kept explaining what livingstones were over and over. I don't need to be told what livingstones are 5 times, I understood what they were the first time they were explained.

Texture of the cover was a good choice along with the colors. Artwork is very nice and detailed and adds a lot of character depth. Really interesting story so far the art accentuates the emotions being displayed and i will be buying this and continuing with the series since i rented this from the library.

Pensaba que tendría una historia lineal pero es más bien un conjunto de situaciones como si fueran relatos cortos. Para mi gusto, los capítulos tienen resoluciones demasiado rápidas y el concepto principal te lo repiten una y otra vez. Quizá en el volumen dos planteen dilemas más interesantes.

Interesting start to this series. It has dark themes (suicide, murder, cover ups, attempted rape).
The story is clear and easy to understand as is the art, although some of the images are quite disturbing. Most of the people the MCs come in contact with are not sympathetic characters.

Would maybe pick up the next in the series.
