"I couldn't believe it at first-that Susan could switch from padded Valentines, eighteen inches high with "Be mine forever," to not even stopping her car for me to cross on a zebra. If she hadn't recognised me with the added weight, she must have known it was my shopping trolley." It's time for Joan to try her luck on the London comedy circuit. After all, everybody always said she was a funny woman."An easy feel good read, a joy to behold."-"What's On"

"An intrinsic truth that pulls you in before you know it."-"Time Out"

I got this book for 1 dollar at a thrift store in SF. honestly, it wasn't bad but it was dull and deeply unfunny at times despite it's title. repeatedly calling a character funny does not make them funny

Much preferred Diary of a Provincial Lesbian, which was clever observational laugh-out-loud comedy. This book made me smile now and then. V.G. Lee’s gently mocking stand-up comedy beats this one for me.

A chronicle of twenty years in the life of Joan Littler, lesbian, part-time gardener and wannabe comedienne. Joan who had to invent a fantasy lover to make people like her, because as part of a couple she was attractive and amusing, an asset in a party, but just as Joan she is not good enough. V. G. Lee through Joan Littler’s eyes portrays a lucid, witty and sometimes sad view at lesbian life.

V.g. Lee has bundles of talent. The Comedienne has moments of laugh out loud mirth to dabbing the corners of your eyes with a damp hanky pathos along with a good dollop of everything else in between. If you've not read V.g Lee, you've not lived!

I wanted to hug Joanie. She was such a wee soul. There are happy, funny and sad parts all of which serve to endear the reader to the protagonist. The book resonated with me, in particular themes of being an outsider and achieving goals later in life. I'm really loving this writer at the moment.

This book is one of my all time favourites, wonderful characterisation, going from laugh out loud to lump in the throat. I find something new every time, highly recommend it.
