The arrival of Europeans in the New World forever changed the fate of the Beothuk. As more settlers arrived, the Beothuk were forced inland. They were tracked, abducted, and even murdered. Their plight was epitomized by the tragic story of Shanawdithit - the last of the Beothuk.
Sad but very informative non fiction book about how an entire tribe of first nations people were wiped out by European explorers and settlers over a couple hundred years. In my travels to Newfoundland over many years of work travel, I knew some of the story, but not the details. This is a well written book that is very easy to follow. I am not usually interested in history books, but this one was worth reading.
Barbara Whitby brings the tragic story of the Beothuk of Newfoundland to life with her book, The Last of the Beothuk.
Anyone with an interest in history will applaud the skill with which Whitby tells of these native Canadians and how they came to be wiped off the planet. This is an important and overlooked chapter of Canadian history that should be shown more respect.
It's not your true history book, which many will appreciate, as the facts are presented in a way that won't put the reader to sleep. Instead we are taken inside the lives of these very real people and told of their demise.
It is also important to note that this is a perfectly unbiased account with no attempts to lay unwarranted blame on any particular race.
Pick up a copy of this wonderful book. You won't be disappointed.
Very good story, it takes this tragedy and puts the human touch on it, instead of just reading a scientific book about how the Beothuk became extinct you get to feel the hardship, anger and resent on both sides and how so much misunderstandings led to this dark time in NL history.
