Cam grew up listening to her father tell the ancient myths of the Great Lodge, a fabled land in the far north where all beavers can be safe. But that was before the fur trapper came to her family’s pond, before she attacked the trapper, before she was forced to flee for her life and befriended an unlikely pair of traveling companions. With her new friends, Cam must journey through the cold north woods, through unexpected dangers and hidden places, to find the real truth behind her father’s old tales and discover how much she will risk to save her friends.
Blackpelt is a wonderful middle-grade novel set in the fur-trapping days of old Quebec. It's the story of a young beaver named Cam, who must flee from a human hunter who is determined to trap her for her valuable pelt. Along the way, Cam befriends another young beaver named Twig, and struggles to trust a fox named Renaud, while desperately trying to reach the mythical Great Lodge where she, Twig, and her mother can be safe.
I absolutely loved this book. The writing is superb, the characters well developed, and the plot action packed. It deals with deep morals involving trust, consequences of actions, and prejudice, but is never preachy.
If you, or your child, liked Kate DiCamillo's "The Tale of Desperaux", I think you'll love Blackpelt.
