Serial temp worker April Johnson is nothing like her wildly successful brothers. She doesn’t have an Olympic gold medal. She doesn’t have millions in the bank from a tech company she founded as a teenager. She doesn’t even have a place to live, not since her boyfriend sneaked off in the middle of the night—skipping out on the rent, his three-legged dog, and her. Now forced to move back home with her mother and grovel for a job from one of her brothers, April decides it’s past time she got serious about her life. Zack Fain, on the other hand, has been too serious for years. After losing his wife to cancer at the age of twenty-six, he’s done nothing but work on his consulting business. But when he meets April at a new job, he forgets he’s a humorless suit who never gets emotionally involved. She makes him laugh, she turns him on, and he begins to wonder if it’s time he broke a few rules. Although April refuses to get stuck in yet another dead-end relationship, Zack isn’t like any of the guys she’s dated before. This could be the real deal. This could be serious . But is either of them ready for the kind of serious that lasts a lifetime?Zack Fain, on the other hand, has been too serious for years. You really root for the main characters, also spoilers! Lots of spoilers!
I really felt a strong bond with April since in a way her personality is a bit like mine. She's more artsy and talented than I but there are aspects of her personality that resonates with mine. I feel her pain, her triumphs, her ups and her downs. I really wanted her to succeed in her life. I know this is a chick lit and a romance book, so of course there are steamy bits, but it's also sort of a coming of age story. April is kinda floating around, not really knowing what direction her life should take but she knows that she wants it to go somewhere more meaningful than it has been. Her family doesn't really take her seriously and she has always felt that she would forever be the flaky one but she had a lot of fiery passion, but not for herself. She doubted herself a lot, until one random day, a hot guy suddenly turned her world upside down. He was so serious and super off limits, but they flirted of course. He himself had a lot of baggage and had his own stuff to deal with, but he was attracted to April and he doubted his feelings for her too. They kept being thrown together and I'm glad they ended up together. I knew they would be since this book always sorta has that happily ever after vibe. But the two main characters, Zack and April had to pretty much fight this battle to really get what they wanted, fight for their love for one another but also to stand up and show everyone who they thought was bogging them down that they are tough and can do whatever they wanted. It was like this totally triumphant feeling when they both got to their own "aha!" moment and felt like they could conquer everything. I loved this book, I think it was great, not just a steamy romance book, but it had a lot of heart and passion that wasn't just between the sheets.
This book was just the right amount of everything. It was cute, it did not get too explicit, it was fun but most importantly to me, it held a level of realism that I liked. It is book 3 in this series but as I did, it can be read as a standalone. It is more of a companion series, following April and Zack.
Plot overall:
As much as I loved it, it did not WOW me. It was cute, fun and easy but it was exactly as you expected. It was what I wanted, however. Now imagine this, you are in that chick-lit mood, so you binge every Netflix classic romances you can find. This was that and like in those moments, it is what you need and thus, is perfect. But you are not in those moods all the time and you may never watch those movies again.
Another thing was, I did not feel completely connected to this book. It was like I was distracted while watching a movie. I knew what was going on but would find that I missed vital parts at times. As mentioned before, it did not WOW me. While I am not for unnecessary drama in books. I still think there needs to be something to break up the story a little. What we did see, was not really something I classed as drama as it was more personal and not really that impactful to the story.
Nonetheless, I did love the flow of this book. It was so smooth and it had some good world-building, I imagined the scenes perfectly. It was cute, and the 'love' scenes were not too much. In fact I would say they held a realistic approach throughout it all. Even the more 'explicit' scenes were so perfectly done, it was not too much but it also did not shy away from what was happening. It was so beautifully put together.
Characters overall:
Zack, was dealing with the loss of his wife and seeing him embrace his grief but also, his desires were refreshing. Because too many times, we see books where the guilt consumes them and they do not allow themselves to feel love again. But he did because he is human. There was an underlying theme of guilt etc but it was perfectly portrayed. I also liked how refreshing our main character girl April was. We cannot be like our siblings, we cannot all have perfect lives or relationships or live in our own homes. It was nice to see her as well be a woman who loved art. Art is an important subject and if this pandemic taught us anything, it is that the arts are something everyone needs and craves. We saw rifts between siblings which was nice (not in a horrid way) as not all siblings get along! We saw office bullies but also, adult approaches. It was just so refreshing to read.
I will say my only critique was that there were too many characters. I could keep up and I did know who each one was but I did find at times, I would forget who was who. This may be because it is a companion series so I do not judge too harshly.
3.5 stars/5:/b>
The reason for the 3.5 stars was because it does take a lot for me to give a book 5 stars, especially romance books. So 3.5 is actually really good! It just did not leave me craving more after it was over. I was happy with how it ended. Again, there was no real drama to through the story off its guidelines at all plus, it was just very much romance-driven. I did enjoy it and I did love the characters but I wish there was just a little more
Overall
This book was not quite perfect (see what I did there?) but it was magnificent and I am so glad I spent the time to read it. I will be reading Gretchen Galway's other books too as I think this will be a series I will want to carry on discovering. I am invested in these characters love lives too!
Although I haven't read the first two books in Gretchen Galway's Oakland Hills series, Not Quite Perfect (#3), has a cute cover that caught my attention and I decided to give it a try. This book worked well as a standalone. It centers around the changes that take place in the main characters's lives. April Johnson, a serial temp worker, has to go back home and live with her mother when her boyfriend leaves her. She feels like a failure because her older brothers, Liam and Mark, are successful and have significant others in their lives. She eventually makes an arrangement with Liam to babysit his new born and work part time in the art room doing graphics at his Fite Fitness. Along comes Zack Fain who is hired to do consulting at Liam's company. He is a serious widower who lost his young wife to cancer. April and Zack and the secondary characters seem like people you'd like to have as friends. Opposites, April and Zack's romance seems realistic. You find yourself rooting for them to have a happily ever after!
I've got a major soft spot for the geeky hero. On the other hand, the flibbertigibbet heroine is usually a deal-breaker for me...and yet this heroine really grew on me pretty fast. The story was funny and fun and sweet all at once.
Nicely written contemporary romance... I didn't have high expectations, it was a freebie at my time of purchase on kindle, but I really enjoyed this... Characters were likeable: April - strong female lead, artsy, fun, past her teens and certainly not virginal Zack - hot, geeky, intelligent, not too alpha-male There were no love triangles, there were a few sex scenes but it didn't take over the whole story... it's also part of a series but can be read as a standalone
I knocked it down because it was a tad cliché in parts, and it was pretty much instalove which was a little disappointing... but on the whole it's a nice, solid 4 stars (8/10)
This book started out pretty good. I liked the characters and the main story line. Mostly believable. Then something happened, it literally fell into a young adult sex book. The author seemed to be trying her hand at romance, but was afraid to use the terminology and then progressively got more daring but the story line got immature. Just not for me.
I liked books #1, #2, and #4 in this series a lot, but this one fizzled. April (the heroine) wasn't holding my interest. Zack (the hero) did more so, but not enough to continue reading.
Summary: April is a mid-twenties perpetual temp who’s recently had to move back in with her mother. With a bit of sneakiness, she lands a job at her brother’s company where she meets the quite serious Zack, and they fall in love (duh).
My Thoughts: I quite enjoyed myself with this one. This romantic comedy was actually funny, so that’s always a plus. There a couple plot clichés, but I was able to overlook them because this book ultimately made me grin in a really cheesy way.
Story of April (Liam and Mark's sister) and Zack, the consultant hired by FITE to help troubleshoot issues. And there are issues.
April agrees to help Liam by working in the art department half time and being nanny to Merry the other half.
A and Z are immediately attracted to each other but each think they should away from the other since they work together. And of course things get complicated.
April needed to get herself together and I would have also liked to see her stand up to her mom, and her sister in law and her brother more --they all treat her like crap at various points in the story (some things the siblings do and say are harsh) but I love how she stood up for herself at work and interestingly she probably did a lot of the things that Zack should have done in his report. I also can't see how any small company would wait for 6 months for a report when the company is barely holding things together.
I much prefer happy books where love is perfect. Since this story isn't about perfect love, it didn't really move me. The end was so strange. The romance was tedious. The girl's family situation was strange. I just didn't connect with the characters. The writing was fine, I just didn't like the story or characters.
My first book to read by this author but for sure not my last!!! I started reading and couldn't stop until the very last page!!! A great story with so much humor!! I love books that make you laugh out loud but maybe have few tears also. But by the end I am left with a happy feeling and so glad I discovered it!!!! Now I can't wait to reached others!!!!!
As the youngest of the Johnsons, April has enjoyed being a free spirit while her brothers became rich and famous. But now she’s tired of temping, in her job, in her relationships, in her life.
She moves home and starts working in her brother Liam’s company as a graphic artist and babysitting her niece part time, but from the start, the design team have it in for her.
Zack has been hired by Fite to look into ways the company can improve due to mismanagement by the previous owner. He keeps running across April and doesn’t know who she is, but for the first time since losing his wife, he’s interested in someone.
They know they shouldn’t get involved, but can’t help the strong attraction and growing feelings. For April it’s new to be serious about someone, and for Zack it’s a reawakening of sorts to seeing a life where he’s not alone.
They have challenges to work through, since he’s based in New York and wants to work with tech companies there, and she’s being targeted at her job but doesn’t want to get her brother or Zack to intervene.
Things come to a head when Zack is done and asks April to go to New York with him and she says no. They both see their mistakes and are willing to make changes to be together, ending up in San Francisco with family and careers for them both.
I like April, the funky woman who forged her own path but also grows into her independence. Zack is sweet, and works through guilt from the loss of his wife and complications in their relationship.
April Johnson is having a really bad day. Her coward of an ex, ran off on her, rent and their three legged dog in the middle of the night. Now forced to move back with her mom, April must face that it is time she built a real career as opposed to the serious temping she's been doing since graduating college. Too bad her very successful brother won't hire her. That is until her talents as a baby whisperer blows him away. Bargaining for a second job in his company, April must now prove herself to keep both jobs. Zack Fain has always been a serious guy. A widower of his wife of only twenty-six, he's focused on growing his business since. And it is through work that he meets April and realizes it might be time to move on. She is stunning, funny, smart and turns him on like no other. But mixing business and pleasure isn't smart… April and Zack's story is a sweet tale of love at first sight, even if it takes them a while to figure it out. Told from multiple points of view, this romance deals with grief, insecurities, dreams and the courage to be happy. I enjoyed reading it, specially the final business meeting scene…
NQP is book #3 in the Oakland Hills series by Gretchen Galway that can be read as a stand alone book. I received it as a free giveaway. Some might say that NQP a typical love story: girl meets boy and they fall in love and face a few issues. I disagree. Yes, it's a love story: but it's much more. California based April Johnson has two brothers, Liam and Mark, that are extremely successful one in tech and the other a gold medalist Olympian clothing CEO along with his wife. April, the youngest sibling, is an artist with a less than stellar track record with men. April has been working as a temp for most of her working life and seems to be spinning her wheels. I liked the character reveal of east coast Zachary a free lance business consultant with his own issues. The author weaves tension within the characters; and the result shows that it's possible to grow and be a grown-up.
April Johnson is a bit of a free spirit. She doesn't really have a career as much as she has a series of temporary jobs. With a degree in art she shows talent for design but has never focused on it . She has 2 brothers , one an Olympic medalist and the other a very successful athletic clothing business owner. She meets Zack Fain a business consultant who is temporarily working for her brother trying to figure out why the business is not as prosperous as it should be. The two are extreme opposites but you know what they say about opposites attracting! I enjoyed the story of the family interactions and the opposites attracting and even the three legged dog but the author made April such a complete and total ditz/loser that it got to be a drag. Would have liked to see more growth and development of all these self absorbed people. An interesting read.
I've read and enjoyed the previous Oakland hills books so was really looking forward to April's story. While the story pulled me in, the romance itself fell flat for me. It took a while for me to even believe April felt anything other than attraction to Zach. At least Zach's feeling were more apparent, but they were both so non expressive, plus getting to know each other seemed mostly off camera, so I was neither convinced their feelings were more than lust nor sure how April knew enough about Zach to convincingly believe the epiphany she had that rushed the ending.
Zack and April's story was so relatable and completely endearing. Strait-laced and work driven Zack Fain didn't know what hit him when quirky, artistic April Johnson almost tripped over him as she covertly lurked around in her brother's business office. Both characters were very likable with strong family values and their own unique charm. I was completely engrossed in this storyline and couldn't wait to learn if this very unlikely pair could find a common thread that would cement their attachment to each other. This was such a great story that I fully intend to read it again in the near future. Really Great Read That Does Not Disappoint!!!!!
I LOVED the first book in this series and am seriously bummed with this slogfest :(
A spirited and enjoyable beginning, a too rushed ending. And hundreds of pages of April, a strong, carefree, confident bada$$ desolving into tears, self doubt and irrational rationalizing over and over and over.
Also, 👎👎 on Zach's business interaction with Mark at the wedding. The character as he had been written would have not done that, and it bugged me.
Side complaint, the preview of book four, after three books of Sylly's one-of-a-kind nickname that seems to fit him to a tee, he is Sly? Disappointed sigh.
I liked it, but not as much as book one or two. The characters are likable and the family dynamic is nice, but this one was kind of mild all the way through.I don’t know if it’s because I don’t identify with their struggles, but April and Zack’s problems just seemed kind of blah. Like there wasn’t really much to overcome.
Is it odd to anybody else that we’ve read the love stories and intimacies of the Johnson siblings? It’s interesting to see their similarities and differences, but kind of odd for some reason.
I’m also intrigued as to where the story will go in the next book!
This is the third book in the Oakland Hills series by Gretchen Galway. April Johnson loses everything and moves back home trying to start her life over. April works as a temp at her brother Liam’s fitness wear company and meets Zach Fain, a business consultant hired to help Liam’s company from bankruptcy. Liam has not dated since his wife died from cancer but is drawn to April’s magical charm. April and Zach have a work relationship which eventually blossoms into love. I really enjoyed this wonderful heartwarming contemporary romance novel.
Im a chick lit lover so i though is a nice book ,cute romance story ... I didn't have high expectations i mean i readed it when i had a knee injure so i had a lot of time to kill , april and zack are characters quite likable, and their story is quite quirky has many cliche stuff but is enjoyable. it was ok ,but the thing is i didn't get some of the characters like Liam and some others from the company but is a light reading.
I really liked this one. I was a little put off by how it seemed the hero put him ambition before his feelings for the heroine, but that impression faded as the book went on. I did start to think towards the end that the hero and heroine had some annoying communication issues, but without them it wouldn’t be much of a story. Overall, it was a good read and I liked the ending, especially how the heroine handled herself (asides from her very conveniently timed ‘aha’ moment).
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I loved the relationship between April and Zack; there are a lot of conflicts and they work through most of them with some great conflicts. I did NOT like the way the brother she works for treated her (as a sister). And I wasn't fond of her mother, although she wasn't horrible, just kind of flighty. There is some workplace drama that is handled really well, and overall this was a great book. Standalone, HEA.
Annoying mother who somehow knows her daughter is involved with a man at work on the very first day. Really? Also she’s trying to get her daughter married and to have children all within the first 14% of the book. Repeatedly. Annoying. Then April the main character is already falling for the new guy at work on day one. And he is also falling for her on day one as well. No thanks. Had to DNF.
This story was about a fun, spunky girl April, who never seems to measure up to her families expectations. She moves back home with her mother, and manages to get her brother to give her a job at his clothing company. April begins to flourish. When she meets Zack, the consultant hired to help grow the business, things get interesting.
Very good book, funny with just the right dash of sarcasm and drama to make not only this book but the series likeable. I usually don't read series, but these were free at different times and I finally got around to reading these three so far. I truly think that if Trixie Johnson is apart of each book in the series it's worth reading them all.
