She began work as a product designer and illustrator. Umino has a unique drawing style, listing Studio Ghibli amongst her influences, and her characters are remarkably well-developed.
Her most famous series to date is Hachimitsu to Clover (English name: Honey and Clover), a 'slice of life' manga series which debuted in 2000 in Shueisha's manga magazine, CUTiEcomic. The series won the Kodansha Manga Award in 2003 and was nominated for the Tezuka Culture Prize and an award from the Japan Media Arts Festival. My Rei is finally growing a spine. In this volume, see him take responsibility for what happened last volume and be more of an adult than the Kawamoto sisters' deadbeat father can be.
What makes for a great volume in this series is the balance of shogi and the Kawamoto family life with Rei. This volume has it in spades.
It just keeps getting better and better the way Kiriyama stood up against their father was touching I love this boy! when he screamed fiance then Shimada suddenly appeared made me lose it 😭
Beautiful, this story never fails to move me. I am not entirely happy with the sexism that’s portrayed now where the girls “have to marry to solve their problems” I get it’s Japanese culture some may want it but I hope in the end it’s just Rei’s wrong ideas and nothing happens. Because I do love the feel of them as a family but I don’t think marriage... uh They don’t love each other romantically, at all, and I think the idea of spending your favorite person even if it’s not sexual or romantic is nice and I won’t be angry if it happens but... I do not want them to force each other into that when, if they were ever going to have that kind of feelings for each other, they clearly don’t yet and pushing it with those expectations would not be good for them. I think they won’t just instantly fall in love, the fact that Hina’s unaware of the seriousness of it all gives me hope that it’s not just for the “aw, she’s so cute factor” but because when she gets it she’ll be like wtf.
Because Rei doesn’t mean bad he’s just being practical and I get it but that’s just not marriage or romantic relationships. He has more romantic chemistry with Kyouko and I could see that romance happening despite her toxicity much more. I think Rei and Hina’s marriage, happening like this, would maybe have some of them regret it. Yes they have been important to each other and support each other but they are not a couples they’re family. And I know Rei just wants to be part of the family but I mean, I don’t think he needs marriage to be, he already is. Like, I’d rather he married Akari, maybe it’s because Hina is a minor and so completely unaware it feels wrong and ancient. I’d be really sad if this series took a weird turn at the end that soured how much I love it, but I hold on to hope
Otherwise, everything is perfect. All the scenes, the characters I’m buying these and reading them in physical form and I am so sad I do not have the last volumes at my disposal because I want to know how it ends. It may hurt me. Like, I’m so worried about Akari, about Rei’s thinking, about what that father’s going to do and that little girl... It’s really not her fault. Oh my god. It’s great, it really is but I’m scared cause we’re nearing the end. Like THE END no more sangatsu —unless they make a third season, the stories would be the ones from the manga, but the anime is pretty strong and brings a lot to the already strong text and striking art
