Wonderful premise! This is an interesting retelling of the mythological settling of Scotland. I liked so much about this book (the main characters in the two main time periods and the author’s ability to make me feel the places) that I’d wanted to give it a much higher rating. And, yes, that means there is a ‘but’ coming. Unfortunately it felt slow in some areas and even repetitious in others. I think it should have been broken up into a trilogy instead of trying to put so much into one book.

That said, I will definitely recommend this to a few people I know who like origin stories or archaeological mystery type stories. I found it refreshing to read something that brought together some current DNA anomalies in Scottish people with a myth which reveals a possible answer to the DNA. And it’s a novel about a myth, so it doesn’t have to be right, folks! It’s an entertaining idea with some unexpected plot twists and that’s good enough.
