Mythical, hot-rodding creatures race in the nine layers of Dante's Inferno to raise hell on earth once again. Most are unaware that monsters such as Vampires, Werewolves, and Zombies once roamed the face of the earth but were banished to hell for their unspeakable acts on humanity. Now in the depths of Dante's vision of hell, Satan holds a race once a millennium, a race unknown to man called The Showdown. Frankenstein greasers, Stitch and Merc, members of a car club called The 500's, are challenged by other hot-rodding ghouls from all walks of existence, such as The Hell Howlers, rockabilly werewolves with muscle cars, and The Bone Crusaders, a skeleton crew of motorcycle bandits, in this death-match exhibition of fantastic horror and campy grindhouse. Who will win this fuel burning, hot-rod race and get a chance to raise hell on earth once again?
Russ Lippitt lives in Los Angeles, CA. He is the Anarchologist of our time; the author of the critically acclaimed Lion’s Share, a sought-after counterculture featured columnist, and has several script and film projects in the works. Lippitt is the articulate voice of the younger generation of punks and societal rebels.
A 100-mph hell-burn that introduces the undead main characters of this gnarly series. Two squads of hot-rodders, zombie rockabilly greasers and skeletal punks on choppers, are gearing up for the titular face-off. Dripping in style, Volume I burns rubber from the first panel. As the teams head toward fate, Lippitt shotgun-marries horror film vibes, teenage rebel culture, and Misfits-style punk-rock darkness. Brains and pomade, demons and switchblades, moody and gloomy.
Who doesn’t love monsters racing classic hot rods? I read issue number 1 and dig the artwork, humor, campy grotesqueness and a vivid portrayal of Hell. I look forward to reading of The Showdown Race where the winners will be unleashed from Hades to exact mayhem and death on an unsuspecting human population. Good times. Bring it on.
The first volume of The Showdown sets the stage for what is sure to be one hell of a race. The characters are imaginative and have distinct personalities that I’m excited to see grow in future volumes. The art style fits the story and adds a lot of depth and nuance to the story.
Super fast-passed introduction to the Showdown series. Love the Dante quote to open things up, and does a great job of introducing the characters with a good bit of humor and a lot of action. Interested to see where the series is gonna go.
