wow! what a wealth of knowledge and truly incredible from an archival pov. i gave three stars bc its tough to enjoy a read that was spitballing names and brands at you, but now i have so many more names and brands to explore. it was fun to read and find the things i already knew or designers i am already a fan of. felt like it breezed over some massive gd developments though? no johannes gutenberg printing press mention, barely any apple mention, no cooper black mention. maybe thats just me. overall, had a blast reading/looking at this one.

This book is an overview on the history of graphic design. To talk about graphic design one must talk about advertising and the many movements in art as well as technical innovations. The author does a great job in explaining, however briefly, the connections between all of those and how relevant they are to our modern practice. This book is not a “complete history,” nor a collection of “the best of,” and there's no claim that it tries to be. I think this book may be relevant for students and professionals alike, specially as a supplementary reading for a class or other books.

Gives a basic overview of the history of graphic design. It really reads like a long list of names so I don't feel like I retained too much from it. The great thing about this book is the wealth of full color examples throughout. It was interesting to see how the development of advertising and design parallels art history.

Not really pertinent, if you had a course on the history of graphic design, you won't learn anything from that book. And the design isnt really the best.
