Book Review - Confusingly Interesting OR Interestingly Confused
I have found many critics pointing to the title of this book and calling it 'trite'. Perhaps it's a tad long, perhaps it's befitting but let me tell you that this 'title' must now dissuade you from giving it a try. Pravin R. Rathod is an MBA graduate and this book is the fruit of his maiden effort at writing something. Chetan Bhagat is an IIM-taught management professional too and there is a simplicity to his books with subtle sense of humor and enviable dramatic flair. And if I have ever come closest to finding a book as simple and funny as his while keeping its dramatic content poised, it must be this debut title from Mr. Rathod. I can say it with full confidence that it contains the only believable love story that an Indian with average background could hope for and even it's sad ending has got an honest moment. The verbs 'confuse' and 'interest' appear twice in their adverb, gerund and participle guises in this book title and they pretty much personify everything that contained within it. At its core, it has got a story of an enviable friendship between four of its central characters but it's mainly driven by only one of them and with him, attached are the life-strings of others. They all are confused but which Indian boys (and boys mostly) aren't confused in their formative years regarding their careers, friendships, relations or even love-lives (yeah, even that's happening very quickly in this NEW India)? All Indian love stories that I have got to read so far has one or two very confused characters who make our readership quite interesting with their foolish acts but this is the first one that has dared to give them the life and title of their own. They really are 'Confusingly Interesting OR Interestingly Confused'. I must say, smart writing.

Coming to the technicalities part, its narrative is tinged with sharp humor and everything seems real be it characters, their friendship, their education lives, their confusions, their vacations, their female friends or their girlfriends. But it's sadly happens to be one of those books that don't advertise themselves too well. Probably the first time I have come to know the importance of 'blurb' in selling a book and the blurb of this book comes pathetically short of doing that to it. It doesn't really give a clue of things to come and I would not doubt either the critics or the readers who might pass it as yet another passable love-story-contained-in-a-drama. It isn't a 'light' affair like many Indian romantic offerings of late but until and unless someone reads some 20 pages of it, he/she wouldn't know and here only its 'blurb' must have played a strong role. This one case has compelled me now to revise my scoring criteria. This book is a surprisingly serious affair and I would hope that this blog might help it in being considered 'likewise'. Let's come down to scoring part:

a) Achievement - 2/2

b) Language skills - 2/2 Grammatical mistakes are few and far between but they exist. Question marks nowadays aren't finding many takers, why, God only knows or these young Indian authors/their editors. Use of punctuation marks is a big worry too with current edition.

c) Plot and Character Development - 2/3; apart from Pratik's character, none were accorded the full attention though the scope was aplenty.

d) Editing and Proofreading - 1.5/2; Editing is sharp and praiseworthy but proofreading left me wanting for more. Grammatical mistakes are few and far between but they exist. Question marks nowadays aren't finding many takers, why, God only knows or these young Indian authors/their editors. Use of punctuation marks is a big worry too with current edition.

f) Book Cover, Page Quality and Blurb - 0.5/1; said it enough already.

Total: 8/10; 4/5 on a five-pointer scale.

Verdict: It's probably a more truthful affair in a dramatic disguise that readers might have got a chance to attest in recent time. I shall unhesitatingly ask you to give it a try.

Strength..
Pravin has done justice with the characterisation of the characters and has described them in a perfect manner. Some incidences are so amazing written that readers will actually step into the shoes of those characters and will enjoy each and every bit of it.. mix spices of emotions, college life and school life's fun-filled-crazy moments will make you recall all the old days and it adds to the strength of the book... pradip has done justice with the character kavya, and has portrayed it really beautifully, kavya's character will definitely make people ponder about the thinking of society and what all things a girl has to face to survive in today's world..some small points and incidents and the ending will make you feel good at the end ..

Weakness:
From the starting till the end of second chapter, i could not somehow relate these chapters with the book.
Pravin has to work on the sentence formation, editing was definitely an issue for me.. punctuations, grammatical mistakes and a bit slow narration of the chapter makes this book a slow entertainer and readers might loose their interest . editing could have been a bit better ( and that's not the mistake of the author ,editor please look into this matter ).. some of the incidents actually din't make sense to me and made me skip the pages..

Conclusion :

A perfect page turner and a book which has perfect blend of emotions, what adds to the beauty of this book is the narration of multiple love stories..title is apt, story and cover page compliment each other really well..this book holds an important aspect and will raise a question in everyone's mind about the money minded state and the state of today's society and will make you ponder upon this..so just sit back and enjoy the life of 4 youngsters and just go with the flow and grab this book and have fun..!

P.s. This book is a total entertainer and pravin has marked his debut with a bang..kudos to the author for writing such a masterpiece... different concept and engaging ..

Confusion is what we all deal with in every stage of life. We are confused about what are our interest subjects, where will it lead us to, should we uphold the family’s old traditions just for the sake of following even if it isn’t worth it or should we fight against all the odds for what we want and what we deserve, is it merely an infatuation or true love, should we hold back our feelings or let them be known, etcetera… but it all comes down to same thing – Life. What will be the ultimate outcome? Very confusing, isn’t it?

I felt something move deep inside of me after completing the book. This is probably after a very long time that a story without major twists and turns caught my interest. There is right amount of sarcasm on life, humorous dialogues, fun – just the way best buddies do it, love and romance and some teachings at the end of it.
It is a beautiful depiction of Friendship.

Stages come in your life when your memories fade, people leave without notice, you truly love someone but you lose them, old friends meet again reminiscing about golden moments spent together, you tear apart from each other planning to stay in touch but then life happens, you cry yourself to sleep and then you wake up next day with a brave smile trying to hide all the desolations, your dreams shatter, you may or may not get married to your dream man/woman, sometimes you regret, sometimes you are amazed…because no one knows what future holds in store for you.
But I learnt, Confusions are good for your decision-making process. It gives you a wide scope for addressing issues before reaching a point to agree upon.

There are minor editing mistakes needing correction.
The book cover is perfect and suits the picturization of events.
The title is interesting and not confusing!

Confusingly Interesting or Interestingly Confused leaves the readers interestingly confused. The story focuses only upon love lives of the four friends. Yes, there are incidents about their work and family but those remain in the shadow.

The story has been narrated quite well. There are incidents which may make the readers feel bored. The characters have been crafted well. Each one exhibits different behaviour and I think, it is this difference that makes them such good friends.

Likes:

Strong bond of friendship between the guys.
Their love feelings.

Dislikes:

There have been quite a few grammatical errors. Correcting those will make this book a good read.
I feel that the flow of the story could have been improvised. The tour incident could have been used as a prologue.

I rate:

Cover: 3/5
Characters: 3/5
Story: 2.5/5

I rate 'Confusingly Interesting or Interestingly Confused' with 2.5/5 stars.

Review:

The Story is about Pratik know is known as Tik in his friends, its his journey from school to a job and what he finds confusing and interesting at that given point. The story revolves around 3 other friends of Tik who will stand the test of time.

The best part of the book is the author tries to capture the adolescence of a teenage guy like when he is in school , what later needs to be done like should i follow what everyone does or choose different.

The flaws in the book are many. I had brought myself an e-book version of the book, so majority of its paragraphs are missing or then there is incomplete paragraph and its on the readers how they want to interpret it. Though the story is fixed so you know you are not missing on any crucial data in it. Then there were grammatical error.

Since paperback is not getting that much error would ask all to buy that itself.

When the stories are being told, author has kept in his mind one thing; the person and his narration. Thus, we don’t see much cross-questioning and this helped a lot in making the chapters smooth. At first I was wondering why Tik’s story was handled alone and the rest stories are told later. If all the four stories were told together then the book would have been much better. But then how author used the tales with the narrator Tik’s life was really intelligent. Because it is Tik only who is always in mess. So I quite liked the way things preceded. It was another start to what just ended.

The story was quick and easy; also the bond of friendship was well shown by the author, making it a story worth sharing among different circles.

To be honest the narrative of the book was not up to the mark. The writing style was very bland and lazy, I felt that more efforts should have been made to make the book more interesting. There were many instances in the book that the author used “or something” as a description which does not really sit well with me. It makes the whole work seem unrefined. At times, the writing was downright amateurish like the time breasts were described as “bulging part of her body”.

The level of English is very elementary, which could have been good if it did not have too many grammatical, redundancy and capitalization errors.

The story is simple and easy going. There are some turns and twists that lead to a bit of excitement about the progress of the lives of four friends. But, the plot is not much creative. The author could have added something else from the lives of four people, but the emphasis is only on the love matters. There are some grammatical issues, and the story loses its interest at some points. Apart from that, it is a good read for a free Sunday
