Van Hamme brings the series full circle as General Carrington kidnaps the President and puts him on trial for the murder of the former President. The series probably could have ended here but Van Hamme definitely has more in store with an ending that sets up the next book.

This volume could have handsomely finished this awesome series, because even though XIII is still amnesic, he knows who he is and n°I is no more, but the story ends with a new twist. Let's just hope that the sequels will be as good as the 12 firsts.

XIII finds himself thrust into fallout of what seems like actions of deranged man when general Carrington decides to take justice into his own hands and publicly accuse the main man behind the XX conspiracy.

Lots of twists and appearances of old characters.

Recommended to all fans of thriller, action and of course XIII.

Van Hamme's interesting and well-composed consistency shocks me. Seriously. He even strip-mines well by somehow sending the same-old character into 20+ tomes without them becoming tiresome as with this, "Thorgal" and "Largo Winch".

Pulling off a Presidential kidnapping credibly is an incredible achievement by making it convincing that the Secret Service, FBI and CIA couldn't have stopped it or recovered him in!

Vance's art has some faults with me though but some may be from being rudely shrunken to 7.25" x 10.25" format. I don't like the way he spreads his darkness/shadows and how he over-wrinkles faces but, especially after just graduating barber school (yes!), I'll attest and emphasize that the hairstyles of some characters are utterly ATROCIOUS- in particular XIII himself and the half-blond female! I grimace at every panel they reside and when next to each other I feel that I should be gagging.

XIII returns to America to find that the general he previously worked with has kidnapped the president and stolen the "nuclear football" that contains ICB launch codes. The general is keeping the president hostage to expose him as a key member of the plot to overthrow american democracy and place himself as a neo-con/fascist leader. The general starts a televised trial of the president to the american public from a hidden underground missile silo bunker with XIII as a star witness. Corrupt DCIA plants an exploding .38 snubnose revolver in an attempt to murder everyone and the President dies but XIII escapes. Crazy how its similar to what's going on right now with the Trump January 6 parallels.
