De eerste strip van de tweede cyclus van de werelden van Aldebaran. Een nieuwe planeet, nieuwe avonturen en een paar bekende personages. Wel jammer dat men in herhaling valt over hoe de nieuwe kolonie omgaat met hun opstart. Voor de rest blijven ze maar fantastische dieren tevoorschijn toveren.

First tome in the mini-series "Beltegeuse", it's the beginning of the 2nd "cycle" in the overall series "The Worlds of Adebaran".
4 solid stars!
I really liked this book. We meet new characters, and we get our first "taste" of the new world Beltegeuse, but, at the same time, there are my favourite "old" characters : Kim, Driss and Alexa. I really liked the sub-plot with the spaceship.I'm off to read the second tome.

J'ai apprécié le thème (étant fan de sf et de mondes nouveaux) : la découverte d'une grande diversité de faune et flore sur une planète habitable par l'homme
Pour le dessin, je ne suis pas fan des visages que je trouve pas assez différenciés
Par contre l'histoire illustrant différentes attitudes face à l'adversité et la nouveauté, m'intéresse
Je lirai donc la série en regrettant un peu de ne pas avoir commencé par celle sur Aldéraran pour mieux comprendre KIM

Teenager Mai Lan lives in a house on the beach with her parents Bert and Phi Anh. It is not the safest place to live - the local wildlife can be dangerous - but life in the canyon, where most people live, also has its drawbacks. When the authorities come for her to take her back to civilization to fulfil her biological duties as a producer of babies, she flees.
Alone, she doesn't stand a chance of escaping. Luckily she has friends in the form of the 'iums', large panda-like animals who turn out to be a lot more intelligent than people think...
Welcome to Betel-Six, the sixth planet of the star Betelgeuse. The planet was colonised six years earlier and - as was the case with the Aldebaran colony - all contact with Earth was mysteriously severed, leaving the intrepid colonists to fend for themselves. Coincidence? Or could there be some unseen connection between these two distant worlds?
In Betelgeuse, writer/artist Léo continues the story that began in the first instalment Aldebaran. Once again we have what is essentially an action/drama with people in 20th century clothes and using mostly 20th century technology, set on a planet that looks a lot like Earth but includes wonderfully surreal plants and animals. It is a neat juxtaposition of the familiar with the strange; characters that the reader can closely identify with set against the Wonderland/Narnia of an alien world.
In orbit above the planet, two people wake from cryogenic hibernation, Inge and Hector. They very soon discover that something has gone terribly wrong with the ship. Not only are all communications down, but all the other hibernation pods have failed. It is a ship full of frozen corpses, and, with no way off, Inge and Hector will eventually join the dead.
But help is on the way: a ship from Aldebaran is en route to investigate the loss of contact. Part of the team is Kim, heroine of the previous volume, now aged twenty-four. Does she hold the key to unlock this enigma?
There are many similarities with Aldebaran here - people on an isolated colony struggling against oppression and tackling the hazards of the native fauna - but here the role of the mysterious mantris is more to the fore in the narrative. As previously we have Léo's finely rendered characters and imaginatively alien animals to delight the eye. The iums are charming creatures, reminiscent of some of the dream-like anime creations of Studio Ghibli... they have more than a touch of Totoro about them; cute and cuddly but also strong and protective.
As before, this is very much a human story set within a fantastical arena, with the added element of the bizarre. We see the new, exciting worlds through the eyes of people like ourselves.
In this second volume of Léo's grand saga we learn a few key facts in the grand scheme, but more remains to be discovered in the continuing stories...

Notre première vu d’une autre planète : Bételgeuse, où les colons ont eu beaucoup plus de mal à atterrir et ensuite de survivre. La population est bien plus petite que sur Aldébaran, mais une chose reste très similaire : toujours, toujours les colons veulent augmenter la population en demandant que des jeunes femmes – presque toujours des filles – commencent à avoir des enfants. Jusqu’au point d’essayer d’enlever une jeune femme de sa famille. Mais ce qu’ils n’attendaient pas, c’est qu’elle communique avec une des espèces de la planète, les iums (qu’on voit sur la couverture du livre).
Encore une fois, Léo nous montre des espèces vraiment bizarre et impressionnantes – sur Bételgeuse, une planète avec peu d’eau mais beaucoup de la terre, il n’y a pas des baleines de mer, mais des baleines de sable, et plus encore. Mais cette fois aussi, il nous montre comment les Terriens auraient pu arriver à Bételgeuse, à Aldébaran, et les vaisseaux spatiaux qu’ils ont utilisé avec des degrés de succès différents. Pour le vaisseau ayant Bételgeuse comme destination, quelque chose s’est mal tournée, et il reste à voir qu’est-ce qui c’est passé.
Pour cela, il ne suffit pas de suivre les humains sur ce vaisseau ou sur la planète, mais de faire appel à Aldébaran. Plus précisément, à Driss, Alexa, et Kim. Pendant ces six dernières années, Kim a fait et a fini ses études de la biologie sur Terre, pendant que Marc a laissé tomber ses études de science et il rattrape sa jeunesse perdue en prison. Ses décisions a crée une rupture entre lui et Kim, qui est rentrée toute seule à Aldébaran, où Driss va lui demander de repartir aussitôt en mission pour Bételgeuse.
La suite (et l’histoire sur Bételgeuse) retravaille des thèmes qu’on a déjà vu en le cycle d’Aldébaran, notamment celui où les femmes deviennent des objets sexuelles et reproductifs pour les hommes. Mais entre Maï Lan sur Bételgeuse et Kim d’Aldébaran, il est aussi évident qu’elles ne supportent pas ce genre de traitement, et leur succès en évitant ce destin tant bien que mal montre un côté de l’histoire un peu plus sophistiqué.
Et bien sûr, il y a toujours cette question de la mantisse, qu’est-ce qu’elle essaie de faire sur Aldébaran avec ses manifestations, surtout celle d’une grande antenne. Est-ce qu’on va avoir des réponses dans ce cycle ? Où est-ce que chaque réponse va nous révéler d’autres mystères de ses actions ?

3.5 pour l'ensemble de la série. Le premier tome donnait tellement envie et pourtant... il y a des hics. Les hommes. C'est quoi leur problème à tous de crusher sur Kim ?? Et puis faire un commentaire du style "T'es belle quand tu t'énerves" après des présentations houleuses ça va hein... Lâchez la, la pauvre. Et les autres aussi, d'ailleurs. (J'espère que c'est la mantrisse qui lui confère des pouvoirs qui attire les autres, histoire de justifier comme on peut, parce que sa derniere conquête cest pour me buter......)
Pour moi c'était un gros point noir, j'ai beaucoup trop roulé des yeux à cause de ces détails de relations.
Mais passons sur du positif, parce qu'il y en a énormément : L'UNIVERS. Juste, l'univers. Tout ce qui le compose est incroyable. On veut savoir, encore et toujours. Les iums sont des êtres fascinants et même ces petites créatures que l'on aperçoit dans le fond de certaines cases sont hyper originales. La planète en elle même est dingue, je rêve de voir un paysage de même. Bref, Bételgeuse me vent du rêve (même si je ne survivrais pas une journée!).
Pour moi c'était un gros point noir, j'ai beaucoup trop roulé des yeux à cause de ces détails de relations.

Inizia il seguito di Aldebaran. Un pianeta diverso, volti diversi, situazioni diverse (con una piccola analogia)... ed alcuni dei protagonisti della vecchia storia. Dopotutto é un seguito, no? La storia sembra intrigante, e la fine di questo capitolo fa subito voglia di leggere il seguente. Vediamo se le prime buone impressioni saranno confermate.

Je commence le deuxième cycle des mondes d’Aldebaran où l’on découvre la planète Betelgeuse. Encore un univers étrange, j’ai hâte d’en savoir plus. Contente de retrouver Kim, un peu déçue que Marc ne soit pas de la partie.

Eine neue Welt
Es war klar, dass Aldebaran nicht der einzige Außenposten der raumfahrenden Menschheit bleiben würde. Erdähnliche Planeten können ja, folgt man der Drake-Gleichung, durchaus zuhauf vorhanden sein. Um die Spannung der Neuheit zu erzeugen, muss sich dieser Planet aber schon allein aus dramaturgischen Gründen natürlich von Aldebaran extrem unterscheiden - statt endlosen Ozeanen finden wir hier endlose Wüstengebiete.
Es ist etwas schade, dass Zeichner und Szenarist Léo es nicht schafft, zu verhindern, dass alle Personen ähnliche Gesichtszüge haben wie die aus dem ersten Zyklus, und dass die fremdartigen Wesen mit ihren kleinen, traurigen Augen und runden Formen den Lebensformen auf Aldebaran arg ähneln. Vielleicht liegt es an der Panspermie; das würde auch dazu passen, dass der Mantriss auf Aldebaran ja irgendwie Kontakt zu Betelgeuse sucht.
Die Erzählung in diesem Auftaktband des neuen Zyklus ist dreigeteilt - erst erleben wir die Probleme der Menschen auf Betelgeuse (muss Isolation und Überlebensdruck immer zu Faschismus führen? Darüber lohnt es sich, nachzudenken - in einem Fernsehbericht gestern abend wurde erläutert, dass die athenische Demokratie erst aus einer Krisensituation entstand), in einem zweiten Kapitel lernen wir, dass Winterschlaf in einem Raumschiff keine allzu sichere Sache ist, und schließlich im dritten Kapitel kehren wir kurz nach Aldebaran zurück und es kommen uns bekannte Gesichter mit in die Mischung.
Ja, da sind nun genug Aufhänger drin, um im Betelgeuse-Zyklus alles das besser zu machen, was beim ersten Zyklus schief lief.

This time round, a colonisation effort has collapsed, leaving the survivors divided into two armed camps over, among other issues, whether or not the indigenous aliens are sentient.[return][return]Unlike the previous series, this volume is divided pretty firmly into two different viewpoints. For the first half, the young Mai Lin (whose parents are clearly of Vietnamese descent) escapes from the two sets of humans and reveals her own ability to communicate with the aliens. In the second half, Kim from the Ald�baran sequence arrives in the Betelgeuse system to start finding out what has happened. Neither story line is resolved, so I'll just have to get the next one.
