It’s the waning dog days of August, 1975 and Tom Mason’s in Dovetail Cove for the last few weeks of his summer job at the group home. His boss and the home’s owner is Karen Banatyne, one of the wealthiest folks in town. It seems like she’s got it in for Tom; she's the only one standing in his way as he scrimps for a new camera.

But Karen has her own problems. A regulatory agency might cut off her funding, plus her hubby hasn’t been seen in a few weeks, and she’s not saying why. Most ominous of all, it seems as though something’s hiding in the hot spring north of the main beach and one of Karen’s ‘houseguests’ is about to come face to face with evil. Tom is too.

"Five stars! Grows up around you like a vine."
- Art Lange, Smashwords

"Completely unpredictable! Like something out of a Quentin Tarantino film, a memoir, and something so bizarre...out of the Twilight Zone.”
- Jennifer Nessen

"I needed to keep reading (until four in the morning!!) to see how it would turn out."
- Will Kagan, Smashwords

"This is a roller coaster ride: you're in the hot sun, chugging to the top, anticipating the drop the whole way and then--boom--the drop comes and you're gasping for air. The hot wind blasts you and your guts are in your throat. In the last half of the book, some scenes had me by the larynx. Highly recommended!"
- Dvier, Sony Reader Store

"[McIntyre] writes some of the most beautiful sentences being published today."
- Vincent Zandri, author of "The Remains"

Welcome to Dovetail Cove, where nothing on the surface is what it seems and what's under the surface of a particular hot spring pool is a veritable Oak Island of mystery. I don't recap plots in my reviews, instead I'll just say that McIntyre takes you back to a 1975 where complex issues are played out against the backdrop of simpler times. His style is one of helping you into the warmth of the story as if it were a hot spring: you get comfortable fast...then he nudges you with unseen things beneath the surface.

His characters are conflicted, flawed, and all too human; they populate an island world replete with the sinister, yet commonplace motivations of greed--tempered by what can only be called the supernatural. Readers will connect with the lead character and find themselves wondering about his foibles and conflicts, but still cheering for him to survive in the midst of repulsive, bizarre happenings.

If you've read other works by this author, you will see what a masterful job he does at shifting genre styles and creating a pleasurable reading experience. McIntyre knows how to hit the reader's sweet spots in a way that few can--comparing this work to some of Stephen King's latter-day short stories and novellas is no dig at McIntyre--it's a solid, honest compliment.

Visit the Cove. Take the waters.

The unusual title, Zed, and the gorgeous cover hooked me. Zed is a wild ride on a wave of evil and horror that will have you questioning the evil that lurks around us.

In the opening pages, Jason McIntyre included a map of Dove Cove and I love that.

Right from the beginning, with the little old lady, Karen, Jason got me. I love it. He grabbed me by the hand and never let me put the book down until the last page was read.

Tom worked for her in the group home for the mentally disabled.

Zed, Zeke, what can I say about him. He was different than the others and I thought him very creepy.

Jason McIntyre amazed me with his characters, good and bad. They each have their distinct personalities. Sometimes, the least likely people are the ones that step up and do the right thing, regardless of the outcome. I loved them all.

It’s so hard to describe this book without giving away the good parts. A bit of horror, suspense, thriller and mystery, Zed kept me reading until the last page was read. A creepy mystery in Dovetail Cove.

This is a MUST READ for those of you who love mystery, the best and worst of humanity and an ending I never saw coming but left me feeling just fine.

I received a copy of Zed by Jason McIntyre in return for an honest and unbiased review.

I slipped into the hot spring, relaxed, got comfortable. Maybe a little complacent. Fully immersed in the setting. Getting to know the characters. Enjoying the interplay. And then...

Bam! Jason McIntyre doesn't like his readers to get too comfortable. I should have remembered that. I should have been prepared.

This is a story with many layers. The plot takes you to one place, then another, and then doubles back but now everything looks different.

The characters all come alive. I could see them and I could hear their voices. I felt their joy and their fear and their madness.

While part of the Dovetail Cove Series, this book can easily be read as a stand-alone. The setting - Dovetail Cove - is the common ground for this series. Some of the characters and story aspects do connect, but it's not necessary to read them all in order to understand one. Each book is a little different in tone and they are all excellent, so read them all anyway. Just prepare yourself for some discomfort.

I think this is my favorite of the Dovetail Cove books (although I think I say that after every one!) The characters were so multi-dimensional. This one scene, yeah yeah, no spoilers! But OMIGOD the atmosphere! I use that word a lot when describing McIntyre's work, but man, can he create atmosphere! I'll be starting the next book in the saga, Shed tonight.

I got to be a beta reader for this book. It was quite well done as I have found all his writings and it`s a great addition to the island series of books.
