After having graduated as an engineer in mechanics, Oliveira left Brazil because of the military dictatorship that was in power at the time. He went first to Chile, but the following year saw the Chilean coup of 1973. This led Oliveira to leave, moving to Argentina, from where he finally returned to Brazil in 1974.
He found work as an illustrator in the advertising industry of São Paulo, before once more leaving Brazil, in 1981, this time moving to France, hoping to illustrate comics. However as the Franco-Belgian comics industry was in recession at the time, he was forced to work in advertising once again, although he managed to get the occasional piece published in L'Écho des savanes and Pilote.
In 1986, with the assistance of Jean-Claude Forest, Oliveira began contributing to the youth dedicated magazines of Bayard Presse. He illustrated true stories for Okapi magazine. He then recounted Mahatma Gandhi's life in the album Gandhi, le pèlerin de la paix, for Astrapi.
In 1988, the comics writer Rodolphe asked him to provide the artwork for his stories. Their collaboration proved fruitful, producing 8 albums of material for their Trent series and 5 for their Kenya one.
In 1993, Oleveira finally achieved an old dream when Dargaud agreed to publish his first solo series: Aldébaran. In 2000, after 5 volumes of Aldébaran, he launched Bételgeuse, which was nominated for the Prize for a Series at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2004.

Götterspeise mit Meergeschmack
Das hat mich kalt erwischt. Ich hätte nicht damit gerechnet, dass mich dieser Band, mit vielen Vorschusslorbeeren versehen, so enttäuscht. Ich bin langsamer Erzählweise und gemächlichem Spannungsaufbau durchaus nicht abgeneigt - wenn denn dann am Ende tatsächlich auch Spannung erzeugt wird. Hier geschieht das auf jeden Fall nicht.
Dazu sehr mäßig interessante Personen (ich habe, zugegebenermaßen, ein Problem mit jugendlichen Protagonisten), deren mäßig spannende Gespräche man verfolgt, die voller banalster Jugendprobleme sind, und, am schlimmsten, das völlige Fehlen einer echten Charakterisierung der Welt. Es reicht halt nicht, drei, vier seltsame Tiere einzubauen und Motorwagen aus Holz, um den Leser in eine andere Welt zu versetzen. Das hier könnte, nur durch minimalste Änderungen, auch in Australien spielen - die ganzen sonnengebräunten Personen in ihren Surferklamotten deuten das mehr als nur an. Wenn es aber so nah an unserer Welt ist - wozu dann überhaupt die Versetzung der Story auf einen so unendlich fernen Planeten? Vielleicht ist es gut, dass die NASA und der Rest der Welt ihre Raumfahrtprogramme einstellt, wenn man eh nur die gediegene Langeweile kleiner Dörfer ins All exportiert...
Die Zeichnungen sind darüberhinaus auch nicht mein Bier. Die Kolorierung ist toll in ihren kräftigen Farben, der Rest furchtbar statisch und seltsam seelenlos. Einige Panels deuten an, wohin das ganze führen soll, doch leider halt nur einige Panels.
Hätte ich die restlichen Bände des Zyklus nicht schon im Regal, ich würde nicht weiterlesen. Mehr als 50 Seiten, der gesamte erste Band, das ist schon mehr, als ich anderen Reihen normalerweise zugestehe, die mich dermaßen langweilen. Vielleicht hebt sich der Autor ja die Spannung für die Folgebände auf...

Our central characters, 17-year-old Marc and 13-year-old Kim, witness peculiar things happening in the ocean near their village, and then - as promised in the title - catastrophe destroys their homes, and the story switches to odyssey format as the two of them travel to, and beyond, the distant metropolis.[return][return]Although the setting is much the same as one might get in a traditional hard sf novel, the execution is very different; the bande dessin�e tradition concentrates much more on character and dialogue than on technology and Being Smart. The tech we do have is almost but not quite streampunkish, with motor vehicles apparently made of wood and a mad professor type who turns out to be rather banal in his nastiness. The human and physical landscape clearly owes a lot to the author's native country - Marc and Kim's home village appears to be pretty multi-ethnic, though it's less clear if that is true of the city; the jungle is a place of risk but not deadly danger; distances are vast but not unbridgeable.

Het infobordje bij deze strip viel me wel in de smaak. Dan maar heel de reeks meegenomen. Moet toegeven, ik vind ze niet super maar ook niet slecht. Ik hoop dat de reeks evolueert in de goede zin.
Het verhaal kabbelt wat door en hier en daar gebeurt er wel iets spannends. Er is wat mysterie maar ook persoonlijke issues.

I liked the info sign for this comic. So then we took the whole series at the same time. I have to admit, I don't think they are that great, but not bad either. I hope the series evolves for the better.
The story goes on and on and here and there something exciting happens. There is some mystery but also personal issues.

This graphical novel was the start of a massive 15+ volume run that continues today. The plot is highly engaging, the art not always perfect but often sensual and makes for some cool monsters. One of the greatest graphic novel series in the Francophone world during the 00's.

Solid debut. Events happen quickly but the book does a great job of throwing world building hints here and there to really flesh out the universe and immerse you in the story. The art is very clean and beautifully coloured. My one complaint would be that every character seemed a little one-dimensional to me but it’s a minor thing in such a heavily plot driven story.

Quel début intéressant ! Il y a cent ans, les premiers Terriens se sont arrivés sur ce nouveau planète, ils ont laissé une population importante sur la planète, se sont reparti, et ne sont jamais revenu. Nous avons une civilisation qui restait et qui avait approprié cette planète pour elle-même, sans contact avec la Terre.
Pour une, je trouvais intéressant de voir leur niveau de technologie – ce n’est pas si avancé que ça, et les habitants/descendants sur cette nouvelle planète n’ont pas accès à un haut niveau de la technologie. Ils ont des engins, des avions aux alentours des années 1920, des buggies qui fonctionne avec des moteurs, des grands bateaux du 19e siècle… mais par contre, ils ne semblent pas avoir de l’électricité, ni des capacités de foncer plus loin (en distance ou en profondeur) dans l’océan qui domine cette planète, ni rien d’autre d’une technologie après les années 1920, à vrai dire. Par contre, le peu qu’on voit de leur système d’école, c’est qu’ils sont peut-être assez forts dans le domaine de la pensée, quand ils peuvent y consacrer du temps (ou peut-être c’est juste que Kim est l’exception à la règle).
Donc nous avons un monde où la technologie apporte très peu à la civilisation, et les habitants de ce monde – ou au moins du petit village qu’on connaît au début – vivent comme au 19e siècle avec quelques avantages de déplacement, avec les moteurs, les petits avions, et même des dirigeable pour le militaire.
Dans les cent ans qu’ils se sont installé sur cette planète, ils ont aussi conçu un système de gouvernement religieux, où le pouvoir reste avec des hommes appelés « prêtres » mais qui dirigent le militaire. La corruption du média et de ce gouvernement est assez profonde et connue aussi, et il existe des journaux clandestins.
En plus, il y a la faune de cette planète : et quelle faune qu’elle est ! J’adore voir tout ces nouvelles créatures, qui sont si différent des nôtres, et des fois assez bizarres aussi. Oh, et la faune est aussi souvent très, très dangereux, bien plus dangereux que nos protagonistes Marc et Kim ne le pense.
J’ai hâte de lire la suite !

Ma série de BD absolument préférée. Extrêmement original, ligne claire sublime, personnages attachants, histoire impeccable. Excellente science-fiction en plus, et le travail sur les animaux et les plantes est parfait. J'ai lu toute la série à peu près vingt fois. Leo est un autodidacte en plus, alors respect.

The writing (especially the faces) are quite difficult for me to like. The translation (if that's the problem) is really bad. The dialogues are sooo bad and you just try to almost skip them. Like a 12 year old wrote the dialogues. They act incoherent.
BUT the animal design and the fauna (which is deadly and gory) is why I keep reading these. Absolutely adore them ♥

L’uomo ha colonizzato le stelle, e Aldebaran é stata la prima. Ma più di 100 anni fa il segnale radio dalla Terra si é interrotto, e la nave che tornava dal nuovo pianeta verso casa è scomparsa, così come un’altra astronave che andava verso Aldebaran. La storia comincia allora... molto lentamente, ma si snoda una vicenda che appare appena all’inizio, e che inizia, appunto, con una catastrofe. Leo è certamente un grande sceneggiatore, con disegni molto puliti ed essenziali. Per il voto massimo attendo comunque gli altri volumi.

Saga que je ne cesse de relire depuis que je suis enfant (à l’époque j’avoue que je n’y comprenais pas grand-chose). Ma note vaut pour toute la saga: si elle n’était pas aussi SEXISTE (femmes-objets MALGRÉ le fait que le personnage principal est une femme, sexualisation des corps etc) ce serait un 5/5 sans aucune hésitation.

Une très bonne BD de science-fiction, lu il y a longtemps et relu récemment.
J'aime particulièrement la complexité et la diversité de ce monde inventé par Léo, si familier et en même temps si différent du nôtre.

Too early to tell, and although the characters seem too formulaic in the beginning, the planet they inhabit and the creatures they share it with seem interesting enough to continue with the next book and see where the story leads...

Un bon début, l’auteur parvient à planter un véritable décor, une vraie atmosphère. Il y a beaucoup de questions à résoudre. J’ai un peu moins aimé le dessin un peu vieillot à mon goût.

There’s not a massive amount of sci fi in this book. Yes, setting is an alien planet and the small population of humans who live there have technologically regressed, but the bulk of the story is the misfortunes of the two teenage leads and their constant, endless, squabbling. I found that a bit wearing to be honest, although I have more sympathy for Kim. Mark, however, is a bit of a…, well let’s just say he’s very immature and obnoxious. All that said, I get the impression this book is setting the scene for much more interesting developments to come in the later volumes. I’m reading it in French, but even so the dialog seems a little stilted. However it’s ideal for someone at an intermediate level (as I am) wanting some practice.

Hard to judge just on the basis of one 50-page chapter I only picked up because it was on special offer for a couple of Euro, but I don't imagine I'll continue with this.
There are some strong moments of mystery and wonder and some striking imagery but the characters are bland both in conception and design and the dialogue is over-written. If they'd stopped wittering and bickering for a minute there'd have been space for more story and I might have been better able to judge if it was going to go anywhere interesting.

J'ai lu le tome 1 tellement de fois sans arriver à finir la saga Aldébaran.
Dépaysant, mystérieux et intéressant, c'est un classique de la BD qui intrigue autant qu'il fascine.
Ce premier tome nous présente un petit village se trouvant sur la planète Aldebaran, ses différences avec notre planète, ainsi que ses protagonistes, qui ont perdu contact avec la Terre et se développent en parallèle, à leur propre rythme (ce qui rend aussi cette saga intemporelle).
Foncez les yeux fermés si vous aimez la SF.

Il fumetto è molto bello, sia nella trama sia nei disegni.
L'unico appunto che muovo è all'edizione italiana dell'Eura; alla fine del volume c'è una pagina con la cronologia interna alla saga e la descrizione delle tappe del'umanità verso il pianeta Aldebaran IV. Ecco, questa pagina, che introduce il lettore al mondo di Leo e gli permette di capire dove diavolo si svolge la storia e in quale periodo di tempo, io l'avrei messa all'inizio, non alla fine.

Quite an exciting science fiction graphic novel set in the future on the mysterious planet of Aldebaran which has been colonised by humans but is now cut off from earth. Suitable for secondary students, but there is some sexual content.

Je suis partagée, parce qu'autant l'histoire est très très intéressante et bien menée, autant je n'aime pas vraiment les dessins des personnages...
