The Ghosts of Misty Hollow is the sixth book in the A Granny Apples Mystery series. In addition, there are three e-book novellas.

I found this book to be very entertaining, but then what’s not to enjoy when Granny Apples is around.

Emma Whitecastle and her fiance, Phil, have traveled to visit with Vince Costello. Costello, a crime writer, is working on his latest book which will have some paranormal scenes and he has asked Emma for her help.

As Emma and Phil pull up to the old farmhouse, Misty Hollow, where Costello is staying Emma notices a porch full of ghosts. At first only one was able to fully materialize, a young, Blaine, who had died while doing repairs to the roof of the family’s barn. Blaine, in time, asks for Emma’s help in locating his brother and sister who had missing when they were young, so that he and several family members can experience closure and finally cross over if they wish.

In the present time, Costello’s wife, Vanessa, leaves after they have another argument, in addition, his assistant, LeRoy also goes missing and Costello’s learns that a soon to be published book has been plagiarized from an unpublished manuscript that Costello had written.

Another well-written story with enjoyable characters. From Ms. Jaffarian. I particularly enjoy the character Granny Apples, a feisty ghost and she and pulls no punches when she communicates with Emma.

Will be watching for the next book in this humorous series.

The facet of this story that interested me the most before reading was there was a writer in the story because I never go into reading a book blind, who needed help with writing a story. That's when I knew I should try and read it. Gino Costello is a famous crime writer he like I said needs help with a resaearch in writing his current book.

Gino wants a paranormal element to the story so he enlists Emma WhiteCastle who has a paranormal T.V. show and she also sees and comminicates with spirits of the dead. Her main companion besides her fiance Phil is the ghost of her humorous great-great-great Granny Apples, nicknamed for her great apple pie recipe.

Gino is on a vacation writing retreat and an old farmhouse with a haunted history of the family that once lived there in the 1880's. Gino invites Emma who's daughter is also Best Friends with Gino's daughter and Phil to stay at the house.

There are ghosts in the house that talk to Emma about two of the families missing children and wonder if these children have been murdered.

At the same time there is drama in the house in the present. The ghost family member that talks to Emma wants her to help the children cross over to the other side. The Ghosts of Misty Hollow was a sometimes sad but very much a cozy mystery and most everyone in the story had some how a paranormal connection and keep me turning pages. The main reason I loved this book was wanting to find out what happened to the children of the ghosts that inhabited this home and the fact there were once very much alive.

Emma and Phil are in Massachusetts at the invitation of mystery writer Gino Costello. He plans to include ghosts in his next book, and plans to use Emma’s expertise to get that part right. However, tension between Gino and Vanessa and the presence of many ghosts looking for Emma’s help will keep this trip for being restful.

While I don’t read many paranormal cozies, I enjoy this series because the characters are so much fun. We only really see Emma, Phil, and Granny here, but they are fantastic, and the new characters more than make up for any characters you might miss. The pacing is a little uneven, but the plot is good and the further I got into the book, the harder it was to put down.

Note: I received a copy of this book.

What a fun and intriguing mystery! I wasn't quite sure what to expect before I started reading this, but the warm and intelligent couple, Emma and Phil, welcome the reader in for the mystery. Granny Apples is Emma's great-great-great-grandma who likes to come back to 'visit' Emma and her daughter. Oh, did I mention that Emma is able to see, hear, and communicate with ghosts?

They are a force to be reckoned with as they try to locate the twins involved in a cold case from more than 100 years ago in the quaint Massachusetts area where Emma is consulting with a bestselling novelist who wants to learn about paranormal situations.

I highly recommend this cozy mystery - more fun that I thought it could be, with captivating characters and intriguing mystery from the past as well as the present.

This book features Emma Whitecastle as a medium who has her own ghost, Granny, who is an actual relative of Emma. Emma and her fiance, Phil, are visiting Gino Costello and encounter a family of ghosts who want Emma to find two children who are missing. Gino is a non-believer even though his daughter has some ability. The book was a very quick easy read.

MY THOUGHTS

Setting: Massachusetts

This is the sixth book in the Granny Apples Mystery Series

As Gino Costello works in a historic farmhouse writing his next book he thinks about a medium the family knows, Emma. The book he's writing is about the paranormal. So Emma, Phil (her fiance) and Granny Apples come for a visit. They soon find out this will be a working visit, not a relaxing visit. They are surprised by what they see when they arrive at the farmhouse. The porch is full of ghosts. But it's what comes with them that is the problem. He has no idea what is in store for them. Possible murder? Now this farmhouse was previously occupied by a family of ghosts, the Brown family. That was back in the nineteenth century. When they lived in the house, their two children disappeared and were never found. Now the ghosts are talking to Emma. The author gives you a refreshing read that is a cozy mystery that has some unhappy moments but there is lots of fun and characters that you will love. Granny Apples is the best of all. She is hysterically funny. The author connects the characters with the paranormal theme. You can't get away from the question, what happened to the two children? Can Emma and Granny Apples solve this mystery? The author always takes you to a new location in her books and that keeps the interest alive. It's a fun read that keeps you questioning and guessing throughout the book. I found it took a little while to really get into the book, but as you read and read, you get more involved in the missing children. There is also much more going on in this farmhouse, people go missing, books are being plagiarized, dead bodies, and ghosts, so many ghosts. I loved it, especially witty, funny Granny Apples. The author gives you crimes to be solved. Can you help Emma and Granny Apples solve them? Grab a copy and find out for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Night Owl Reviews and voluntarily decided to review it.

This latest installment in the Ghost of Granny Apples Mystery series, is just as delightful as the titles before.

Returning “Granny” readers are going to love this latest offering from author Sue Ann Jaffarian. If you haven’t read any of the other books, but you’re a fan of para-cozies, and a fan of funny cozies, you’re going to love THE GHOSTS OF MISTY HOLLOW. Ever watched the show, Ghost Whisperer? You will for sure get the same sort of vibe when reading this book.

Ms. Jaffarian has created a wonderful series with unforgettable characters. Granny the ghost being the most unforgettable of all. And in THE GHOSTS OF MISTY HOLLOW, Granny Apples is at her sassiest, ghostly best! Practically every word that comes out of her mouth cracks me up. She’d be a lot of fun to have around. Well, maybe she’d be too much of a good thing in real life. ;-)

Cover to cover great reading, you’ll find it hard to walk away from this one for and length of time.

A fun read

I love the Granny Apples mysteries! The Ghosts of Misty Hollow did not disappoint! Gino finally got a bigger role and new friends Fran and Heddy were delightful plus, the murder plot along with the serial killer from the 1880s, made The Ghosts of Misty Hollow a real page turner! Coincidentally, my lights went out late at night during storm during an intense scene with Emma, Phil, Gino and a gunman which made my heart skip a beat!

Can't wait for the next book. I am betting it will take place during Phil and Emma's wedding, which I cannot wait to read all about!

Good edition to the series. Pretty much you knew who did it from the beginning, but the historical ghost mystery did keep me interested. Always love the paranormal part of these characters, and this one did not fail to deliver. Look forward to the next one.

Emma and Phil head to a lavish country estate to visit their friend Gino Costello, crime writer. Once there they are greeted by a family of ghosts, the family who originally owned the farm, now an estate. As Emma makes contact they (the ghosts) ask for her assistance in finding their lost twin children who disappeared a century or more earlier, all the while dealing with the drama playing out between Gino and his wife, Vanessa. Vanessa does NOT like the country and makes no bones about it as she makes every effort not to interact with Emma and Phil. And then there's Marta, the dogsbody cook and housekeeper who rubs her crucifix every time Emma comes near her. She is devoted to Gino even though it is Vanessa she ends up catering to on a daily basis. Granny also gets involved, trying to stay in contact with the ghost family and get more information for Emma. And Leroy, Gino's research assistant is up to something as well. There is a lively and interesting cast of other characters that round out the whole for a totally enjoyable tale of loss, love and hope. I just couldn't put it down.

Review:

What a delightfully funny and fascinating cozy mystery! This is the first Granny Apples mystery I’ve read, and I do hope to read more! As a ‘skeptic’, I really wasn’t sure what to expect when I began to read, but was drawn in by the warm and intelligent couple, Emma and Phil, then Gino, a best selling novelist who they go to visit. Emma has a television show about paranormal activity, and her fiance Phil is an attorney and rancher. Gino and his wife Vanessa know Phil and Emma as Gino’s daughter and Emma’s daughter are very close friends. Emma and Phil have been invited to the home Gino and Vanessa are renting in a beautiful New England rural area so Gino can pick Emma’s brain about paranormal activity for a novel he is planning to write.

When they arrive, they meet Gino’s assistant, Leroy, who has a certain charm while being…just not quite right. Marta, the cook and housekeeper Vanessa brought from their Chicago home is a quiet, industrious woman who seems afraid to meet Emma’s eyes and rubs her crucifix around her. Vanessa is anything but the loving wife to Gino, whining about being out in the country with nothing to do. It isn’t long until they find that Granny Apples has joined them. Granny Apples is Emma’s great-great-great-grandmother who continues to return and enjoy the lives of Emma and her daughter. As a ‘ghost whisperer’, Emma can see and hear Granny but Phil cannot.

Waiting to greet Emma are the ghosts who she learns are family members who had lived on the property when it was still in their family. The property has well over a century of history; Gino shows Emma and Phil a photo album that includes the original farm house and the main home which had been renovated by a former owner. The ghosts who currently are on the property are seeking the “twins”, children of Nana Abby, Chester and Clarissa, who had disappeared when they were only eight. It was never certain whether they were kidnapped or murdered, but they had never ‘crossed over’. Abby and her grandson Blaine, the primary spokesperson, continue to search for them, wanting to bring the twins safely across so the family will be together. While Emma has helped solve many mysteries, a cold case from over 100 years earlier and the only helpers being ghosts proved a challenge even for her.

Gino’s wife left the morning following Emma and Phil’s arrival. Due to a family emergency, Marta left for a couple days, then Leroy went away to see a friend. A morning after Vanessa, Marta, and Leroy left, Emma and Phil were out for an early morning run and saw a vehicle at the old farmhouse. Upon further exploration, they found the murdered body of a man they didn’t recognize. After several hours of crime scene work, the police were only able to learn the name of the man who was unknown also by the owner of the property.

With the help of Fran, a local medium and retired librarian, Heddy, a retired teacher, Granny Apples and the family ghosts, Gino, Emma and Phil hope to solve the cold case of the missing twins – and find out who the flesh and blood bad guy is before he takes someone else out.

Emma, Phil and Granny Apples are developed very well; even though this is the sixth in the series, I felt as if they were easy to get to know. Gino and those they meet in rural Massachusetts were defined as well as necessary for their roles. Part of the fun of getting to know them, I think, is seeing how Emma and Granny could interact, also the ghosts at the farm, and how that looks to someone ‘outside’ the family. Gino must have felt conflicting emotions as he watched Emma carry out a conversation with someone he couldn’t see or hear, but Phil has become quite used to it.

The plot is intriguing! It was interesting to see how Emma was there to help Gino learn more about paranormal activity should he want to use it in his novel, and how he learned enough to write more than one novel! It was also fun to see how feisty Granny Apples is for a woman of her ‘time’ while the ghosts on the property are much less outspoken. I enjoy reading about or watching cold case resolution, and this was certainly different from any I’ve seen! The bad guy/ gal who murdered the stranger in the old farmhouse was probably more challenging to discover until some of the layers of deception were peeled away. I like mysteries that are hard to solve, so in many ways this has been a most pleasant reading venture. I highly recommend it! And as it is a ‘clean’ mystery, it can be enjoyed by older teens as well as adults of any age.

Ghost Hunting Mystery

An old farming homestead turned into a B&B then a vacation home, a family of ghosts, missing children, a serial killer. A famous author rents the house and asks medium, Emma Whitehouse, to come and advise him on a ghostly subplot in his next book. What follows is a missing children search, a scandalous break up of a marriage, murder and mayhem. Intertwined all this was a lot of warm hearted good humor and some actual laugh out loud moments. I have read all of Sue Ann Jaffarian's previous works. I have enjoyed them all. She just gets better and better.

A fantastic Granny Apple mystery! Emma, Phil, and Granny are joined by Gino to solve not one but two mysteries in beautiful Massachusetts. In the story, we meet some new characters whom I hope show up again in future books. While trying to solve an old mystery and help reconnect a family, a present day mystery comes to light when a dead body shows up where Emma, Phil, and Gino are staying. With the help of Granny, both mysteries are solved and families are reunited. Thank you Sue Ann for another fabulous read!

Another wonderful read! Twists, turns, gasps and laughs. The Ghost of Granny Apples is definitely one of my favorite series to read. It’s always a fun adventure with Emma and Granny. Granny’s sass is both comical and adorable. I love the close knit family and how supportive they are of each other. Each story has captured my attention so well that I find it hard to put the book down! I’m hoping this isn’t the end of our as adventure. I don’t see anymore books listed. Maybe the author has taken a long hiatus and will return with a bundle more of Granny Apples adventures! 🤞🏻

I loved the locale of this book--made me want to go back east and enjoy the fall colors, slow pace, and all the fried seafood. There were interesting twists to this book. And the final few pages added some surprises--so now I'm wondering where Sue Ann will take this series next.

I did feel the writing flowed a bit better here.

What a fun read, Mysteries are a departure from my usual genre but this was so much fun. While I figured some things out ahead of them being revealed there were more surprises than not. The characters were well fleshed out and quite lovable, except for the baddies of course. I look forward to reading more of these Ghost of Granny Apples mysteries in the future.

They also want her help! Very good story line, I had problems with putting the book down. I wanted to know what was next.

The plot was interesting---I love ghost stories. However, the writing style is poor. The author includes mundane things like what kind of cutlery is on their fast food tray---hohummm.
She also tries to be too cute and her characters laugh at things that aren't really very funny. Probably will not read this author again.

3 1/2 The ghosts' cold case was very interesting--although it didn't require much investigation/effort to solve. And the living mystery felt tacked on and was too simple. All the stars for the ghost mystery.

Emma, a medium, and her sidekick Granny Apples are a delight in both words and action, this time at a house in the country where they have to solve both a ghost-world mystery and a crime in the living world. Enjoyable characters and a delightful blend of the living and spirit worlds
