Sandra was built with everything; a perfect body, perfect face, and every upgrade that can be bought. Yet somehow she finds herself on the reject table next to a half-dissembled robot with an erratic personality. And now, on top of everything else, she’s just experienced her first emotion. Too bad for her it turned out to be fear.
But all is not as it seems inside the cold Perfect Partners facility. Behind the cool concrete and stainless steel there is more to find than just freshly minted PePrs with empty eyes, or unwanted returns awaiting disassembly. There is a mind with a plan, and if it succeeds, it might change the future for every PePr. As Sandra gets swept up in the plots and plans inside the PePr facility, she must maintain her placid facade or wind up on the chopping block along with her new friend. In the end, it all boils down to one question: How much is Sandra willing to give up to provide a better future for her kind?
Imperfect is the third novella in the Perfect Partners, Incorporated series. They don't need to be read in any order. You can try the PePr, Inc. universe with a free short story, PePr, Inc. available for a limited time.
Ann lives by the sea under the benevolent rule of her canine overlord and an incredibly foul-mouthed cat. A scientist and Navy officer by profession, the writing bug somehow got inside her during her travels. She's now stuck with it and can't stop writing.
She writes fully immersive works of science fiction and apocalyptic fiction. Ann is also a voracious reader, and adores a well-done audiobook. If she's not writing, then she's reading or listening.
What a great addition to the PePr universe! Sandra is returned to a PePr service center, and is afraid for her future. That’s extraordinary for an android, to say the least. She’s experiencing emotions that shouldn’t be possible for her at all, and the first thing she feels is fear for continued existence. That’s tough to cope with.
The story is about how Sandra copes, and what she learns from the facility and another PePr named Georgia. It’s a fascinating look at PePrs functioning apart from their interactions with humans. Georgia and Sandra are distinctly different characters, something you might not expect in androids. I found myself sympathizing with them both. Yes, the not human characters.
This is a short work, and I was happy to beta read it. It's fun to read, and I look forward to the next one in the series.
Another amazing read in Perfect Partners. I love this series and am excited for other books in this series! Cuz it is just filled with awesomeness!! I loved the end very much!! I just love it! The books could be read in any order. They all are different just the setting is similar. Gah! I'm excited for more! A MUST READ!!!! Got the book in exchange of an honest review.
Imperfect by Ann Christy - A story about an android created to be the perfect companion, matched exactly to what the customer desires. But yet, she has been returned. Is there something wrong with her or with the customer? She is the latest model, with all the bells and whistles, and here she is - back at the factory. After testing, will she be reconfigured or .....
Ms Christy continues to expand the collection of stories involving the Perfect Partners, Incorporated - with this story about Sandra, the rejected Perfect Partner, and Georgia, another rejected partner. Read along with the rest of us and discover what is truly happening to and between these two.
I was privileged to be a Beta reader of this story and look forward to reading the final published story (which I've just bought). Highly recommended.
Clever novella from Ann Christy's PePr universe, concerning the evolution & becoming aware of a 'pleasure' android.
Quick & enjoyable read - more to follow asap!
Note: I only read the original Perfect Partners #1 included in Future Chronicles prior to picking up this novella. This didn't stop me enjoying this third part, as this can easily be read as a stand-alone story!
In this story we meet two PePrs, Sandra - who has been sent in for replacement by an 'owner' who has previously returned two other PePrs, and Gloria, who has been in the diagnostics and repair lab for about eight weeks when Sandra arrives (a VERY long amount of time for a PePr to be in a lab, usually unheard of, quiet expensive as lab reprogramming work is).
Ann Christy has a manor to her writing style that causes me to consider how our own Social Structure works, or fails us, in this World we live in. She causes me to think about human emotions, and is doing so, in this series, by using non-humans. I highly recommend each book in this series. I would want to read them for the level of consciousness it causes within me (thus, I feel compelled to include that in my reviews), but they are also simply truly unique science fiction stories and novellas which may be read in any order, as each is a stand-alone story of it's own.
*****Spoiler Alerts**** (Mild to Medium)
Sandra arrives confused, torn because she has been attempting to discover what she did 'wrong', why was she 'returned' and deemed "Imperfect" by her owner? She recognizes she is experiencing 'feelings', something that has been sought to avoid in all PePrs, for they are supposed to only Simulate such human emotions, perfectly, not to actually Experience them for their selves. Her first emotion felt, then, is FEAR; she fears that she has done something wrong, she fears what having been 'rejected' by her owner means - she, in fact, fears death. She fears being dissembled, which to a PePr, is the human equivalent of death.
In meeting Gloria, she discovers she is not alone in the ability to feel 'human emotions'. She had seriously wondered if she were the ONLY one, but knew better than to let the service techs see her revealing her emotions, she knew that would mean certain 'death' for her.
Gloria, as it turns out, is an enigma... she self-harms herself, and for a very long while will not allow Sandra to know why. Eventually, after deciding that Sandra is not a 'spy', she lets her know...
Gloria's motives are pure and selfless; beautiful, in fact, and are carefully considered and planned in order to help all future PePrs who will be made after she has been dissembled. She has, you see, willingly sought out, planned and is working towards her 'death'.
Read the book to discover the answers to many questions my review may cause you to feel. It's an exceptional book to experience.
Intriguing The author gives the reader another glimpse into the world of PePer Inc.The cover is gorgeous and immediately drew my interest. The story revolves around Sandra and Georgia her fellow PePer.Their interaction and developing relationship is compelling and drives the story.Ann Christy delivered a intriguing story that left me feeling conflicted emotions(in a satisfying way).I found myself rooting for them and yet feeling afraid for the consequences of their success.I really enjoyed this peek into the world the author created.I highly recommend this book to any fan of the Sci-Fi genre.I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I felt that the third in the series of Perfect Partners, Incorporated was good but not great. For me the 2 main characters were not as well developed as those in the previous 2 stories. However still a good read which I would recommend. All 3 stories (so far) have been easy to read and as they are completely separate from each other could be read in any order. I'll definitely get the next one in the series!
A.I.'s can be sentient beings too. If you give your computer enough knowledge and training, and force it to pretend to be human, something's going to change. The A.I. will evolve.
Ann Christy's imagination and story telling is fantastic. I CANNOT WAIT to see what she comes up with next for this world!
Each of these stories are different. But they all tell a story of a Perfect Partner and their dilema dealing with new found feelings. Dealing with moral questions all sentient beings face. Can a PePr actually lie/fudge the truth? Humm... I wonder...
I read this as part of a collection of Perfect Partner stories. She brings artificial beings to life and in all the stories it is easier to recognize their humanity than it is to see it in some of the human owners.
The writing is a treat as usual and she describes the world and her characters in such an easy way that it's hard to not finish her stories in a single sitting.
I don't have the skill to adequately describe her writing and fortunately others are doing that job well. I like her writing and I hope many more people take the opportunity to experience it.
I still like the concept but I didn't care for this story line it was pretty boring. And it kind of didn't make good sense. Still like the world will read another cause they are really like short stories. But this one I wouldn't recommend.
