In her first book in more than 30 years, supermodel Christie Brinkley shares the secrets she's learned on what to eat, how to apply makeup like a pro, and what to wear to look like a knock out. From tips on which skincare products really make our skin look younger to which foods cut inflammation to a fitness plan with easy exercises to keep us strong and our waistlines lean, Brinkley draws on her years of experience maintaining her supermodel appearance to help readers look and feel their youthful best. She also offers makeup tips that will make any face look younger, fashion advice on necklines, skirt lengths, and more! With never-before-read personal stories, beautiful photographs, hundreds of timesaving tips, plus a good dose of humor, this will be the book that every woman will want to own and share with her friends.
I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1 because the pictures are pretty.
I can imagine someone on Ms. Brinkley's staff saying "Let's make a coffee table book of some of the best of Christie's photographs over the years. People will love seeing her classic smile over the decades of different styles!" and someone else being like "Maybe, but... what's really selling these days is lifestyle books. Add some recipes and make up tips. It'll double as a giant advertisement for her cosmetic lines. "
To Ms. Brinkley's credit, she does not pretend to be one of the hoi polloi. She lets her personal chef do the chapter on cooking and her trichologist do the chapter on hair. (Yes, really)
But other than that, the whole book reeks of smarthy dishonesty. The whole book is an attempt to convince people that Christie Brinkley looks the way she does thanks to clean living and vitamins. Do people still fall for this stuff?
There is not A SINGLE candid photo in the entire book. Not even a funny cute one from when she was a toddler. Every single image is styled, laid out and photoshopped. In each image she is fully made up, hair fully done, clothes perfectly styled. She doesn't even give us a fresh face while doing her "Everyday Makeup For The Active Woman" tutorial. (Starting with "Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare Close Up Instant Wrinkle Reducer & Treatment, natch, and ending 14 steps later with orange eyeshadow) SERIOUSLY.
The WORST were these things she called "Multi-taskercise!". Every chapter or so, she throws in a word art box telling you to do a couple of fitness moves while doing something else. For example, do 20 calf raises while sorting your cosmetic box. Do some squats while drying your hair. Balance on one foot while brushing your teeth. Benign on the surface, taken as a whole with the book, I feel that Ms. Brinkley is suggesting that her svelte frame is thanks to these silly little exercises and the rest of us should just do the same and expect similar results.
She also has pictures of herself perched prettily atop her Total Gym machine and says that you should do "some aerobic exercise for at least 20 minutes every day" but girl, you don't get a body like that with 20 minutes of Pilates. That body is the result of LOTS OF EXERCISE, EVERYDAY, FOR YEARS. She's got herself posing with her "movement trainer" and physical therapist - these are not the kind of professionals you hire for 20 minutes of light jogging.
O, wait, maybe those weren't the worst... my jaw literally DROPPED on page 155 when she gleefully describes dressing her INNOCENT CHILDREN up on Halloween like "American Indians, Japanese Kabuki characters, Frida Kahlo..." from her eclectic wardrobe collected from all the exotic places around the world. She continues, "I have djellabas from Morocco, silver bracelets and beaded necklaces from Africa, embroidered Mexican wedding dresses, huaraches, ghos and turquoise from the Kingdom of Bhutan" (Bhutan gets a full regal name and the entire continent of Africa gets put at the kids' table) The idea of traveling the world and collecting fashion souvenirs sounds fun (and probably a good way to contribute to the local economy and indigenous workers) but the way she PUTS it, just rubs me wrong. Something about the way she lists these things makes me feel that she finds all these cultures just ADORABLE. It would make Columbus proud.
I was kind of impressed when she said she won a horse back riding competition, but when I found out it was a CELEBRITY horse back riding competition I felt bummed. It felt dishonest, in keeping with the theme of the book.
I thought I had been too hard on her when I got to the last chapter, entitled "The Beauty of Giving Back". I thought I'd learn about her charitable work. She had mentioned several times throughout the book that she's passionate about organic food. She even spares a couple of sentences against the ivory trade while fetishizing foreign cultures.
She writes three good paragraphs about how motherhood made her want to make the world a better place, and how "giving back" is the "quickest way to buff up your inner beauty". Then I turn the page and it's LITERALLY just a LISTING of a dozen not-for-profit organizations that I guess she feels are worth some ink. Clearly this is not about a book meant to inspire philanthropy.
Bottom line is this - Christie Brinkley is a beautiful and accomplished woman who should be proud of all she has. If she doesn't want to pull the back the veil, she doesn't have to - but why write a book? If you're going to write a book, give us something juicy. Be honest about your plastic surgery, how hard you work for your body, the struggle of maintaining a vegan diet while jet setting... I would have loved to hear about the changes in the modeling world and how she's stayed relevant. This book was a disappointment.
I was a little surprised at how much I liked this book. I had no idea why I requested this book from the library. I'm younger than Christie Brinkley but not by much and I look nowhere as good. First off, I'm too lazy. Secondly, I'm not rich. But this book has a lot of down-to-earth hints on how to achieve some of her beauty tips and not everything is over $50.00. The other thing I liked about this book is she gave the experts who do her make-up, hair, etc a forum to talk about what works and didn't present others' ideas as her own. That was really refreshing. A super quick read for me because I definitely do not plan on eating like she does (and that was a big section of this book) but beyond that I felt it was informative.
Plenty of common sense advice (eat right and exercise, ladies!), but mostly a vanity project designed to sell her Total Gym, skincare line, and hair extensions. Page after page of beautiful pictures of CB, but give me a break...these are completely photo shopped. Not even she looks this good at 61. I wish she had been more honest about it.
In "Timeless Beauty: Over 100 Tips, Secrets, and Shortcuts to Looking Great" which I won through Goodreads/First Reads supermodel Christie Brinkley inspires women to get "stronger, fitter and leaner" by striving to find inner peace, good eating habits and exercise. At age 60 with years of experience in the art of beauty Christie couples her advice with that of experts in areas of nutrition, exercise workouts and skin care.
The book includes a well-thought- out composite of recipes, exercise diagrams and skin care, makeup and fashion advice. Vividly striking photographs and how-to illustrations add to a beautiful presentation that gives validity to her instructions for enhancing the self-confidence and glow of any woman. Woven into a creative and inspiring format are personal stories and a dash of humor that augment this treasure trove of tips and tricks to make any woman lovelier.
Having taken some of Christie's guidance to heart, I now have several friends and relatives eager to read a self-help book that I rate highly.
This book was copyrighted in 2015 so it is a little dated, but I still gleaned an abundance of useful tips and information. Obviously, new discoveries and opinions have changed some of the advice given but I think it's easy to distinguish anything that has been debunked since then. Afterall, nothing is new in the thoughts of eating healthy and staying away from processed foods as much as possible.
This book is a total waste of your money. Not surprising as it is written by a woman who will do anything to make women buy her skin care line, her wigs, her exercise products. This book makes it seem like she is obsessed with herself and how she looks. Which she probably is, judging by her social media accounts. Of course, there is no way her 'tips and tricks' will make you look like her. If you don't have her millions, her personal trainers, her make-up team, the people who airbrush all of her photos and so on, you will never look like her. And you know what: BE GLAD! Because where most of us are happy and hardworking women without obsessing over our looks, her looks are all she has. All that 'smiling' all day long sure didn't help her with her marriages, she failed 4 times already and is currently dating a man who has been divorced 3 times and smokes 3 packs per day!
Don't buy this book, spend the money on a meaningful gift for someone who needs it. It will make you feel better than looking at a bunch of airbrushed photos of a woman whom you will never look like. Don't buy her fake hair extension, you look fine the way you do! And don't waste your money on her skin care products, there are much cheaper brands with better results.
Christie Brinkley appears to be the epitome of beauty, health and happiness at the age of 61. We all know that she has had some personal struggles along the way, but as far as her public image goes--she is as gorgeous as ever.
I thought this book contained a nice collection of advice from someone who has a lot to share. While she does promote her own products, as others have stated, I don't think her personal regime is written in stone, and like most advice in life, take what works for you, and add what works for you. Experiment a little! Nothing is ever written in stone.
I give this book a solid five stars, and it is not only because I was fortunate enough to receive a copy as a Goodreads winner. YAY! It's also because I appreciate the opportunity to receive some beauty advice from a woman who through good times and bad, has always put her best face forward.
I like that she added tips from the beauty experts with whom she works. Only--the one fitness guy said that crunches don't do anything? Not true! They strengthen my core and help my posture.
Full disclosures: 1. I LOVE Christie Brinkley. There, I've said it, and I'm sort of not ashamed to admit it. 2. My teen beauty/health Bible was probably "Christie Brinkley's Outdoor Beauty and Fitness Book." Yes, I put mayonnaise in my hair, and lemon on my elbows, and became a vegetarian. For 2 years. 3. I did not actually "read" this book, and I don't think you should either. Ugh.
But you should definitely make the Chopped Kale Salad, which is my favorite lunch right now, despite its name; the green apple and pomegranate with the lemon vinaigrette, in all seriousness, makes my soul sing. And so does the Acai, Banana, and Berries Smoothie, for that matter, because it is not super sweet (and add almond milk, if you want, because yum!). In fact, I plan on making every single recipe I have not already tried. The woman knows how to eat.
And the woman knows how to lifestyle. You should meditate. And take care of your skin. And spend time outdoors. All of those things are good for you. And because, Christie Brinkley. This book -- well, flipping through this book -- inspires me.
This book was a dollar store find and was better than I actually expected. It is nicely written and she seems very normal and grounded. There are tips for eating with recipes and menu ideas. Tips on skin care, make-up, hair and lots more. She talks about mediation, her aches and pains, wrinkles etc. It is a pretty book with lots of pictures.
Well, there is no doubt about it- Christie Brinkley looks great, and has aged very well. She doesn't look like she's over 50, let alone well over 60. However, I'd look great too if I had her money. Most of the products she says she uses on her face to maintain her youthful looks are just too expensive for the average woman.
Still, I did like her tips for maintaining a healthy diet and exercising, even if it was somewhat self-promotional. There is nothing too crazy, or unattainable when it comes to her diet (other than, of course, advice from her private chef... LOL) so that part of the book I can appreciate a bit more.
Wonderful! Written in her (should be) trademarked upbeat style, Christie Brinkley shares beauty secrets from her long career as a model and actress.
As beautiful inside as she is outside, Ms. Brinkley also extols the power of the smile as a way to get through personal struggles on a daily basis.
A lifelong vegetarian, Christie includes great recipes. Her lasagna is quickly becoming a staple in my own home — yum!
And last but not least, the last chapter lists Christie’s personal favorite organizations who do good in the world. I will be following the Organic Consumers Association for tips on staying healthy.
Bravo and thank you to Ms. Brinkley for writing “Timeless Beauty”!
"She has the face and body of a 30 year old and she's 61!" She has great genes, that sums it up. Yes the things she advocates are smart, but overall, the only thing I learned was smiling is better for you than you think. Which is great, cause its simple and free. (Plus I was clever to start with. ;) ) That being said, its a beautiful gorgeous book and if you're into Christie Brinkley, you definitely should add this to your collection, as she takes beautiful pictures. And if you don't know a lot of good health stuff, there is that stuff in there too.
Christie Brinkley is obviously an above average woman in looks. In this book she gives her best advice to help one look younger, stay fit and healthy. It was a valiant effort, but there was nothing remotely new. If anything, it is another reminder of the advantages of a healthy diet, exercise and a steady makeup routine. Its important to remain realistic with books such as these. For instance we should aim to have optimal health and look our best. But even if one dots all their I's and crosses all T's , one still won't look like Christie Brinkley. (You get the drift)
This book has a lot of very helpful information for women. She is very relatable and realistic in her approach to health and beauty...and I'd say it comes from a good source who has had fantastic resources in the industry as well as her following a healthy diet & lifestyle for years. It's great to see her daughters are following in her healthy footsteps! I recommend this book to young women through the older in age.
Loved listening to Christie's audio book. Her voice is as beautiful as she is. She tells many personal and professional stories intertwined with tips on growing older in a beautiful way. Christie shares helpful info about health, food, fashion and organizations that promote a green future for our world. Her best tip for me is to find comfortable jeans to track your weight gain and dress up or down for social occasions. Christie is down to earth and puts her family and friends first!
Wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but I got some really good practical advice that has really helped me to take great care of my skin and keep it looking as young as possible for as long as I possibly can. It's been about 2-3 years since I read this book, but the tips I put to use from it are still paying off. :)
Wasn't really looking for product ideas as I genererally dont trust them not being sponsored and unfortunately for me the book is quite full of them. I was enjoying some parts, particularly pertaining food, but was a bit disappointed with how vaguely some of their benefits were described. Enjoyable enough read, but left me with more questions than answers.
Some pretty good advice inside..including recipes! I like that she gives information without preaching, includes lots of photos and lets you make up your own mind about what is good for your own body. Great photos from her life included.
This book was informative and had lots of good advice in it. It was written in the way you would have a conversation with a friend, which made for pleasant reading. However, I don't think there is anything in this book that's going to help me look remotely like Christie Brinkley! LOL
While I, for one minute, don’t believe reading this book will make me look like Christie Brinkley. It did give me pointers on how to dress, foods to eat, beauty/hair products to use and causes to support.
A few good tips that I can definitely use in my life. I felt like there was a bit more product placements in this one than I have seen in other books like this but overall it was pretty good.
