John Fulghum Mysteries is full of neo-nior short stories dedicated to the Private Investigator, John Fulghum, that just happens to be a decent, brilliant former war hero and gumshoe. Working out of an unlikely second-story office in Greater Boston, he solves crimes that no one else will handle because they do not fit the parameters or jurisdiction of normal police work. They are dirty crimes, involving savage methods and little-understood societal forces most people would rather ignore than address.
In the process of solving his crimes, Fulghum, often at the risk of his life, works with his like-minded friends, Officer Nigel Pounce of Boston Homicide, Randy Mortenson-the ex-Special Forces soldier, or Kenneth Mander-the shadowy clandestine CIA operative.
Fulghum lives on the edge of the law and always beyond the limits of propriety, and his solutions do not extend to the politically-correct society that condones and often harbors the evil criminals that he hunts down. His solace for being a cleaner-up of filth lies in his racing forms, his Jack Daniels whisky and his Marlboro cigarettes.
His life is a series of journeys and returns, but the center of his universe remains the same: honor and justice in a world without either.
It looks like it took me forever to finish the book, but that is not quite the truth. Actually, when I finished it, I gave it to a guy to read. I liked it, or I would not have asked his opinion. Sooo... Older female: I liked the short stories, but hoped that they were appetizers for longer formats. Good plot and verbal interaction. Fulghum just doesn't fit into socially acceptable modes: couldn't be a cop, done with military politics, can't do the relationship thing. But good at investigating and putting a permanent end to things as needed. And good at calling on friends of similar mindset. Definitely worth the read. Over 40 guy: Yeah, I liked it. Got anything else by this guy? Goodreads Giveaway winner.
These short stories, a couple of which actually stretch over two chapters, are exciting to read. They vary from working with the mob to international espionage, but P I Fulghum, a chain-smoking, heavy-drinking Special Operations veteran, finds a way to beat the odds, stay alive, and bring down some of the worst criminals one could imagine.
His relationship with his policeman friend, Nigel, and Nigel's family, brings out a side of Fulghum that most people don't see.
Farnsworth has written stories full of action and hair-raising suspense, all wrapped up in concise packages with enough detail to let you peek into the psyche of the main characters.
Thank you Good Reads giveaways for my free book. I enjoyed most of the short stories in this book, but the acronyms were too many and threw me off a bit. Thanks for the glossary, I would have been lost without it. This was more of a crime novel than a mystery. And some of the stories were lacking a bit of information That being said it just wasn't my kind of mystery and perhaps a man would enjoy these stories more than a woman. It just did not hold my interest. John Fulghum seems like the kind of man you would want working for you, but all I wanted him to do was take out his trash and wash his whiskey glass out. What a slob.
I received a free copy of this book through the "Good Reads First Reads Giveaway."
John Fulghum Mysteries is a loosely connected set of short stories which are often "politically incorrect" and involve a hard drinking, chain smoking, Private Investigator. Occasionally, the stories involve vigilante justice and expose the use of political cover by Islamists in our country.
The use of many ACRONYMS of government agencies (despite the helpful glossary at the end of the book) and the thought process of the main character, can be confusing.
At the conclusion, you hope that the stories are based on the fertile and talented imagination of the author and not on reality.
A collection of short stories that didn't really have a lot of story to them. They were enjoyable but I kept thinking they would have been better if more time was spent developing them. The main characters seemed to be Jack Daniels and Marlboro cigarettes. I received this book free from Goodreads Giveaways.
