Rate this book
Lydia Esh’s younger sister Emma is running wild during rumschpringe, causing the family major heartaches. Although it means risking her reputation, her job as a schoolteacher, and her courtship with Jakob Zook, Lydia attends parties to watch over Emma and protect her sister’s virtue.

When Emma begins a relationship with Kyle, an Englischer, Lydia teams up with Kyle’s older brother, Caleb, to keep the couple apart. As Lydia and Caleb spend time together keeping an eye on their siblings, Lydia falls for this forbidden love. But she fights her attraction and determines to stay true to her faith.

Caleb confesses his feelings to Lydia. She admits her attraction to him, but she’s made her decision to join the church and marry Jakob Zook as her family is pressing her to do.

I was initially drawn to this book by the beautiful cover. I’m so glad that I was because I discovered not only a good book, but a wonderful author.
At first, I thought the book would be a somewhat predictable, but after a couple of chapters I realized that would not be the case! The story progressed nicely and the characters were well developed.
One of my favorite characters is Mammi. She was full of surprises and quite different from other Amish grandmother’s in books that I’ve read. I loved her spunk and her gentle ways. A great combination.
Another character that stood out to me was their father and how he dealt with both anger and despair. The most maddening character was Kyle! Maybe, he’ll have some redeeming qualities in the next book?
I’m already looking forward to the next installment in this series. I cannot wait to see what Ms. Good has in store for The Esh family, their friends and community.
A good book for both young and older readers.
I received this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

As the story opens we see Lydia sneaking around and keeping tabs on her sister Emma, but is she why has she taken the responsibility to keep eyes on her sister? What happens as an outcome of these spying or chaperoning ends up being the makings of this book?
Lydia has yet to join the church, and she has been keeping Jakob at arms length, and it is supposed by all that they will soon marry. Life cannot always run smooth, and by chance the brother of Emma’s boyfriend keeps running into Lydia, and so we meet Caleb. You can almost see the sparks running between the two, yes they are attracted to one another, but it can never be, as Lydia will never leave her faith.
We meet their father who is having anger issues over all that happens to Emma, he need to live his faith, and forgive. What about Lydia? Will she go ahead and marry Jakob, knowing she loves another. The answers are here, but are we going to like them? This is an interesting Amish read, that really makes you think, it becomes a real page-turner, and I couldn’t put it down.
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Charisma House, and was not required to give a positive review.

This is the first Rachel Good book I have read and it won't be my last. I was hooked from chapter one. This book has everything love, heartache, danger, and family. What more can you ask for?

I was so invested in Lydia's story that I found myself thinking about her troubles when I wasn't reading the book. Would she follow her heart or what was right by her faith? Would her and Emma resolve their issues? I hesitate to give specific details of the story as I want you as the reader to find yourself emotionally invested as I was and be surprised when you should be and teary eyed as well.

Rachel Good writes with emotion and love for her characters. I loved how she never went overboard on her use of descriptive words..This was a change of pace for me as the Amish fiction I usually read had a lot of faith and scripture filled passages. The book discussed faith but not in great detail.

If you have never read Amish fiction and want to give it a try this would be the prefect book in my opinion. I have already put book two on my to be read list.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy of this book for an honest review.

Eureka! I've just discovered a new-to-me favourite author and she writes Amish stories! Woot! I was completely captivated by the Esh sisters and thrilled to discover this is Book One in the Sisters & Friends series. And we don't have to wait long to get a hold of Book Two -- it comes out this winter. Double woot!

Good has created an enthralling family tale rife with angst, forbidden love and abiding faith. I was on tenterhooks the whole read. The Esh family dynamics had my tummy in knots for most of the read. From Lydia's unbending father to her outspoken grandmother -- well I was laughing and fuming and ready to scream in places. And poor Lydia tries to serenely navigate her way through it all while her heart is in turmoil and her dedication to her faith is tested. Riveting stuff.

If you love Amish fiction, you need to read Change of Heart. Really.

Change of Heart is an adventure to read with three dimensional characters facing obstacles and heartbreak along with finding forgiveness and renewed faith. This story will take readers on a journey where family members are looking out for others but also withdrawing when tragic strike. The Esh’s family members faced a lot of trials but I admired Mammi and her strong faith throughout the story.

Change of Heart is an appropriate title for the introduction of Rachel J. Good’s Sisters and Friends series. There were loved and not so loved characters that had their hearts changed throughout the story. It’s a captivating read with many life lessons on fortitude, faith, forgiveness, seeking God’s perfect will, and letting go of anger. I applaud Good for this heart touching tale. I highly recommend this series since I’ve read the other books already, but each one can be read as a standalone.

Although I live in Central Pennsylvania, I do not usually read Amish stories. I am extremely happy that I made an exception for this book. The characters are well developed and the research is very good. I enjoyed the plot and the setting as well.

First of all, I have to comment on how pretty the cover of this book is. The picture, colors, and font all combine to beckon a reader to pick up this book. I was so glad the inside of this book held up to the expectations I had based on the cover.

Although this book at first seems a bit on the predictable side it is soon discovered there are going to be many twists and turns. Readers should be prepared for a rollercoaster ride of emotions while reading this well-written story.

All of the characters in this book are easy to like. Well, maybe with the exception of Kyle. I especially liked Lydia and Mammi. Jakob was another favorite of mine and I felt myself feeling sorry for him throughout the book. Hopefully the next book in the series will see happier times for him.

I liked the author's writing style. I found her writing style simplistic and easy to read. Being this is a book about the Amish I found the writing style fit well with the subject.

If you are a fan of Amish fiction I think you will enjoy this book. It has all the elements fans of Amish fiction look for but is a different type of story than what we usually find. This is a quick and easy read.

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Change of Heart is filled with an uplifting PG romance, some difficult life passages and relatable angst. This novel will both charm you and move you. The author deftly sets up the story of 18 year-old Lydia Esh, who disapproves of her younger sister Emma’s wild ways. At sixteen, Emma is enjoying a Rumschpringe that unnerves her older and more traditional older sister, who had eschewed the opportunity to dress and act like the Englischers when she was sixteen. In order to monitor Emma, who regularly meets her Englisch boyfriend, Kyle, by changing into much sexier clothes and plenty of make-up, Lydia decides to act like as her chaperone. In the beginning of the novel, Lydia meets Caleb, Kyle’s older brother, who although Englisch, is also monitoring his younger brother. Lydia feels an incredible spark of attraction to this young man, which shames her, as she’s expected to be the bride of the ever practical but dull Jackob Zook. Well, I don't want to put in any spoilers, but let’s just say this novel ultimately goes in an unexpected and delightful direction. Let’s just you might not guess which character the title is referring to!

When I received my ARC from Rachel Good I was excited to see where this Author would take me. Lydia is a wonderful Amish school teacher, she is "courting" Jakob the Bishop's son. As the characters develop you learn that there courtship is assumed not official. Jakob is pretty quite and shy. Our heroine Lydia has several younger siblings, Emma is in her Rumschpringe and the base storyline. Trying to protect her sister she meets Caleb. He is English and she should not feel what her heart is feeling. Lydia's family meets many issues head on, accidents, sickness, pride and Faith. This is one of those books where you want to skip to the last chapter to see who wins her heart, but you don't want to miss the stories in between so you keep reading until the book is finished. Rachel is a master at developing the stories and the characters. Looking forward to book two Sister & Friends series.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Charisma House Realms, and Rachel J. Good for an advanced copy of Change of Heart for an honest review.

Change of Heart the first book in the Sisters and Friends series brings us into the lives of the Amish. We get to see how much the Amish stand for family and community, learning a lot about the Amish lifestyle. Emma is running wild during rumschpringe and her sister Lydia feels compelled to watch over and protect her younger sister. A truly lovely book about love, faith, family, and community. I definitely recommend this book.

"Change of Heart" by Rachel J. Good is the first book in the (Sisters & Friends series) and if the other two books in the series is as intense as this one the reader will be remembering these sisters and friends long after they finished reading the series.

This book is a novel full of emotion and twists that I didn't see coming. This book made the tears fall while reading a couple of scenes. Even though this book is about the Amish, I believe that readers of clean love stories will enjoy it. I really enjoyed this book. I really like the way Rachel Good wrote the scenes, I could see the story in my mind as I was reading it.

This story is a story that is filled with sorrow and joy. I know the story is Lydia's but my favorite character is Lydia's mammi ( grandmother). Lydia's grandmother seems like the type of lady that knows how to get something done and shows true faith.

I love the title because it really fits the story because more than one character in the story has a "Change Of Heart".

I received a copy of "Change Of Heart" by Rachel Good by the author and Celebrate Lit for my honest review as part of the book tour. I am giving "Change Of Heart" by Rachel J. Good five stars.

This was my first read from this author, and definitely will not be my last. Though it had a predictable outcome, I loved all the twists and turns Ms Good put into the plot. The characters are fully rounded and each one adds their own touch to the story.

I ran the gamut of emotions while reading this story. It has plenty of love, and angst. Heartache and the normal family ties of the Amish.

Lydia, the main character has fallen in love with an Englischer, will she leave her family, her home, her faith to be with him?

Grab this book and slip into the world of Amish. Where love of family and God reside.

I read Change of Heart several years ago, but I liked it even better this time.

Emma leaves her Amish home during her Rumschpring (running around time for the Amish) to live with her boyfriend. Her sister Lydia is very upset about it. Emma has an accident that leaves in a coma. Her family cared for her, and Caleb helped.

Caleb and Lydia get to be friends, but he is not Amish. Will they be able to work things out?

I found the story very encouraging. I recommend reading the Change of Heart.

This is a delightful Amish novel showing how God really does turn people around given time. Love is something that you just can't turn off jo matter how hard you try. Love is a gift from God given freely through his Son.
God works miracles even today!
I feel like I've made new friend and looking forward to seeing God work more through these people's lives.
Rachel thank you for a delightful story and for taking the time to answer our questions about the Amish in the CelebrateLit party.

Beautiful story of love, hope and forgiveness

This is a sweet story about a strong independent woman in a culture that leans on one another. Lydia has a heart that yearns for God and the right path in life. Will the power of love bring her away from the path that she thinks she must travel in life, or will that love allow two paths to merge into one?

A nice Amish fiction that focuses on temptations that young adults go through, specifically relationships with English & temptations of romance. There were a few interesting side story lines in this book as well which tied in nicely and held attention of the readers.

Change of Heart is the first book of the Sisters and Friends series and I look forward to reading more. This is Lydia's story but her family is right there with her especially her grandmother, Mammi. This is not your typical Amish story since there is so much angst, anger, lies, secrets and even some disrespect. The book has many unexpected storylines, some including Englischers, being woven together.

Many of the Amish beliefs were woven throughout and there were a lot of references to those, and to their bible and prayers. On the flip side, Lydia was torn between how she should be feeling and acting when an Englischer, Caleb, crosses her path. He is front and center most of the story and there is a definite attraction between him and Lydia especially when a serious accident involving her younger sister, Emma, keeps throwing them together after he's already been there for Mammi when she's hospitalized.

The story moved at a fast-pace and involved many emotions. I kept turning the pages to see what would happen next and I was never disappointed. While a few actions were predictable, most were not. I loved the strength of the characters and how most banded together when there are problems to solve. There was nice closure with a happily ever after in the offing and I look forward to reading Buried Secrets next.

I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 stars here and on other sites.

Book 1 in the Sisters and Friends Series is, Change of Heart by Rachel J Good
I could not put this book down and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series, Buried Secrets.
If you want a roller coaster ride, hop on and get ready as you read this wonderful book. Rachel J Good has a way with her writing that you feel the characters are friends telling you a story, your drawn into their lives and their emotion becomes your emotion. Every book I read of this author I learn so much as it seems her research is so thorough, it’s not just an Amish Christian Fiction story it is mixed with reality in the fact the we learn real facts weather that be medical, educational or religious.
In this book Lydia Esh is a young school teach with gteat love for her family and community not to mention her faith, however with that comes great sacrifice. Lydia’s younger sister Emma is in her Rnmschpringe and some of her choices during this time don’t set well with Lydia particularly when she starts seeing Kyle Miller and English boy she needs at a party. While watching over Emma one night Lydia meets Kyle’s brother Caleb who is watching over him as well, together can they set these two straight or does God have something totally different in mind?
This is an amazing story of ups and down, twists and turns. I know you will like it and want to read the next book as I do.

Good read

This was my first book by Rachel J Good.
Change of Heart is the first book in the Sisters and Friends.
At first I thought this would be a fairly predictable Amish story. I was delightfully wrong. This was a well developed story with strong characters. It’s a story about what happens when the Amish and English world collide and it’s far reaching effects to the family structure. The author was able to show both view points through dialog, strong characters and a well developed story. This was a very good story. Just like life the story is not predicable. I loved the grandmother s character (Mamie). She was wise from her experiences, feisty, strong and determine. You could see her love throughout all the family interactions. The book also shows forgiveness in action.......how to apply it and how God works in your life for good.

Lydia Esh cares deeply for her sister Emma. But when she ventures into her sister's world to protect her, the last thing she expects happens: she falls for an Englischer. Then, a string of family illnesses and tragedies causes her to question whether her caring gestures are a sign of spiritual pride. Lydia stays true to her convictions even when it means giving up the man she desires. As someone who has never left the faith I was born into, I found the themes in this story meaningful. The story kept my attention as Lydia struggles to balance her caring impulses with the new spiritual insights she gains as she grows in her faith. This series was new to me. It has been around for almost a decade, but it has proven to be timeless.

Rachel J. Good is a new-to-me author. In Change of Heart, the first in the Sisters and Friends series, she deals with the subject of Amish rumschpringe and a realistic view of what happens when your heart and your faith are not parallel. Will Lydia remain true to her Amish upbringing and never experience being married to the man she loves? Each is stand alone and focuses on the lives of the Esh sisters.

I found Change of Heart to be a relaxing and refreshing read. It was interesting to learn about the Amish culture and I was curious to find out whether 18 year-old Lydia would stay true to her faith despite her attraction to the very charming Caleb, an Englischer; especially since she is already expected to marry Jakob. Added bonuses I enjoyed were the Amish glossary and recipes (including whoopee pies!) at the back of the book. Recommended for fans of clean romance books!

A very good Amish book

This book had alot of good information about brain trauma and comas. It was very emotional what this family went through due to a serious car accident. But their faith held true and they were stronger for it. I enjoyed this book from start to finish.

It starts out a little slow and choppy. By the middle it really picks up, and you start to like the characters more. The ending was a very heartwarming, make you think, type of ending that you expect from Rachel J. Good.

I would recommend it, especially if you enjoy Amish or Christian fiction.

Change Of Heart by Rachel J Good is a contemporary Amish romance and the first in the Sisters And Friends series. I thoroughly enjoyed it and cannot wait for the subsequent books.
Rachel Good explores what happens when the Amish and Englisch worlds collide. The reader finds it easy to empathise with both sides of the same coin from the Amish viewpoint.
The life of the Amish is laid out in the novel and there is much to recommend it. God is very much at the heart. Lydia has to decide whether to put God first in her life. To put Him above her family, friends and her own desires. "Sometimes the pull of the world is strong. But the pull of God is stronger."
The novel deals with the topic of forgiveness. The Amish forgive because God tells them to. However they must forgive from their heart. Forgiveness needs to be received too or life an become very bitter.
Linked to the theme of forgiveness is the theme of guilt. Guilt if left unchecked can affect a person's mood and drag them down.
There is also the theme of healing within the story. There is both physical and mental healing needed. Both can happen instantly or may need to take time to be fully effective.
Family is of utmost importance. It may be blood ties or the wider Amish community. The Amish place high value on the family unit. They will also pull out all the stops to look after their own.
Where we come from is important in knowing who we are. To not know your roots can be isolating. To gain knowledge of who you are can be very uplifting and give a sense of value and purpose to life.
Education is shown to be valuable. Not just the education found in books but also the knowledge to be found in the field or the workshop or the house.
I do enjoy Amish fiction and Change Of Heart is a cracking novel. It was my first by Rachel J Good but I shall definitely be hunting out more by her. It's a wonderful read.

I received this book for free in exchange for a fair and honest review. No monetary compensation was received and all views expressed are my own.
