I have no idea how Caleb Shepperd can get into so much trouble in so few pages. Not that 1001 has any less problems. Loved to see them work together for a change. There is a bit of character growth in this one and the ending was awesome. Love this SF series of novellas. It is even better that I read it in alternation with The Murderbot series. Both series have a cyborg as a main character and are novellas, but they are quite different in other aspects.

The series is rated 18+ because of drug use, explicit sex, swearing and violence

And the moral of this reread is : there is nothing quite like getting your poor little nerves beautifully and most ruthlessly wracked and your black, withered heart deliciously and most ferociously crushed over and over (and over and over) again by Evil Pippa DaCosta is Evil™, if you ask me.

And the other moral of this reread is : there is a slight chance that this might possibly be the best series Evil Pippa DaCosta is Evil™ has written to this day. Maybe. Perhaps.

Actual rating: 10 stars.

Disclaimer: this is Pippa DaCosta. This is The 1000 Revolution. Synapses dead. Grey cells fried. Don't expect any of this to make sense.

Introducing…

Q: Who is Pippa DaCosta?
A: Who is Pippa DaCosta?! WHO IS PIPPA DACOSTA?! You have got to be kidding me. Breathe Sarah, Breathe. Be lenient. Be patient. Explain. You can do this. *breathes deeply* Who is Pippa DaCosta, you ask? {insert homicidal maniac smile here} Oh, no one important, really. Just the only author this side of the nine systems [desperately clueless person raises hand] Me: yes, what is it? Desperately clueless person: what are the nine systems? Me:

Desperately clueless person: I'm so sorry. I'm clueless. This is who I am. I can't help it. Me: well you know what, you clueless person? Just go read this series instead of asking ridiculous questions AND interrupting a most fascinating review. THEN you'll know what the nine systems are! Damn. These desperately clueless people are going to kill me one of these days. Sorry for this unexpected disturbance, dear not-so clueless people. Now. Where were we? Oh yes, Pippa Dacosta = no one important. She's just the only author this side of the nine systems who is able to keep me away from an Ilona Andrews book. You know, that very same Ilona Andrews I sold my soul to some time ago. See my point here? No? Too bad. Yes? Very good. Moving on.

Q: what is The 1000 Revolution?
A: nothing much, really. Just one of those boring, unoriginal sci-fi series with stereotypical characters. Definitely not the kind of series I'd fangirl about. I never fangirl anyway. Okay, maybe I do. A teensy little bit. Silently. And very discreetly. Yes, I'm afraid this series is nothing special. That's why all its instalments are on my "absolute favourites" shelf. And that's why I rated books one and two 8 and 10 stars respectively. Yep. I'm a reverse rating kind of girl. I hate it, I rate it high. Anyway, if I LOVED this series (which I don't, remember?) I would tell you reading it makes me feel like this:

And like this:

And a little bit like this:

AND, it might make me feel like this, too:

But I don't so I won't ←still remember what we were talking about here? You do? Good for you!! Here, have a cookie.

Q: who is #1001?
A: oh, no one worth mentioning, really. Well, it is true that she might be one of the coolest female synth characters ever created. Yeah, there's that. Not much, is it? Ha. One Thousand and One: lethal killing machine. Pain in the ass < fault > Tastes like cherries < fault > Never lies. Never fails < Protocols breached > Likes the rain < Override confirmed > Thinks too much < Failsafes disabled. Protocols reengineered > Real. Alive. More human than humans < Data recall initiated. Data recall failed. Default files not found > Started a revolution < Execute master reboot. Initialize default start-up process. Reboot complete > Houston, we have a problem.

Who do you take me for? A complete beginner? What do you think that reboot was for, anyway? *eyeroll*

Oh damn. Just pass the booze and a truckload of phencyl and I should be fine [desperately clueless person raises hand again] Me: let me guess, you don't know what phencyl is? Desperately clueless person: how did you know that's what I was going to ask? Me: Einstein is me, that's how. Desperately clueless person: Oh. So? Me: So what? Desperately clueless person: *eyeroll* what is phencyl, you silly? Me: did you just eyeroll on me AND call me silly? Desperately clueless person: err, yes? Me: you are SO DEAD. I am SO unleashing the Fenrir Nine on you. Oh no, don't you dare ask what the Fenrir Nine are, clueless people. Just. Read. The. Freaking. Series. Before I do something I might not regret.

Q: who is Caleb Shepperd?
A: BACK THE HELL OFF EVERYONE, HE'S MINE. Oops, sorry about that. I tend to get a tad violent when the most aggravating of fucked-up bastards this side of the nine systems makes an appearance . Ladies and gentlemen…[cue drumroll]…please meet the one and only, the #1, the undisputed king of my high security harem…Captain Caleb Shepperd! Selfish asshole extraordinaire. No morals. No ethics. Lies. Cheats. Loves violence. King of fuck-ups. Screwed up beyond repair. A dream come true! Now new and improved?! With something resembling a heart?! And relatively human feelings?! I am so fucking doomedthis right there is not called cursing, it's called Caleb-talk. Ha .

Please Caleb Shepperd, go Neanderthal on me.

Oh dear, I think feminism just committed suicide. Oh well. That's the Shepperd effect for you: self-respect disintegrated, integrity annihilated, dignity obliterated. YESSSSSSSS!

Q: anything else worth mentioning before this delightfully enlightening review comes to its end?
A: let's see. We've covered the fact that Pippa DaCosta isn't one of my favourite authors ever, that this series isn't one of the best ones ever, that #1001 isn't one of the coolest cyborg-type characters ever and that Caleb Shepperd isn't the bastard of my dreams. Long story short: if you're looking for a slow paced, lacklustre story packed with fluffy bunnies, pastel-colored rainbows, delightfully thoughtful and trustworthy characters, and no action whatsoever, reading this series might result in permanent damage to your hopelessly delicate persona. Now if you like non-stop action, riveting plots, find solace in a little violence, and enjoy reading about heartless liars and assholes, then this is the series for you. You might experience the loss of a few grey cells while reading it and will probably need a few days to recover afterwards, but believe me, it's worth it. Damn right it is.

Gah….SO CLOSE, SO FREAKING CLOSE!!!

description

Why Pippa??? Why??? How could you end this book right there? Seriously this is outside my normal HEA comfort zone and so I have no idea what is going to happen next. I know what I want, I know who I want to get it on but with Pippa there are no guarantees and I’m hoping that when I finish this series I’m not just a puddle of goo on the floor.

description

Caleb is his constant broken mess and I totally love it! Dude has 99 problems and a Synth is One. Seems like everyone wants a piece of him and the Nine are demanding he gives up 1001 to them. He has so many balls up in the air it is a wonder Ringling Brothers hasn’t tried to recruit him. Still he is my favorite self-loather out there and I love that One calls him on all of his bullshit.

1001 is the shit. I totally love her and she gets a little more interesting every book. Plus I’m loving the flirtatious dynamic between her and Caleb. I’d say I ship them but I’ve learned my lesson the hard way. NEVER SHIP in a Pippa book. Still they are great on page together.
“And there’s no synthetic owners manual?” His lips twitched, smile threatening to break into a grin.
A joke. He wasn’t funny. “Do you come with an owners’ manual, Captain? Because I’d like to study your troubleshooting section.”
“Would you like to strip me down to my nuts and bolts, and figure out what makes me tick?”
“I knew what made you tick from the moment we first met. That’s why I punched you between the legs.”

Are there twists? - Yes

Did I like all the twists? - My summer heart couldn’t take a few of them.

Will I come back for more? Well, of course I can’t get this out of my head.

I’m so nervous to see what happens next. Caleb and 1001 have some unfinished business and I need to see how this ends. Good luck to my summer heart.

I started The 1000 Revolution about two years ago and when I finished the previous book I got scared - scared about the future of the series (that ending!) and that if I don't stop now I'll finish all of Pippa's books (I was new to her writing back then) and I'll have nothing new from her to read. So I left Trapped for a time when I will need something special to get me out of a funk. But now with the approach of a new book in the series I need to finish them before the new release.

What really made an impression on me was how fast the details swam back into my mind once I started reading. Lately that's been difficult even for books I read in the last few months. So this came as a nice surprise - I was sure I will need to reread the first two books but decided to try and see what happens. The story had made such an impression that years later the details are vivid in my memory. It's a twisted tale full of backstabbing and betrayal. Like most of Pippa's books it delves into a part of the human psyche we usually shun in the light of day and pretend it exists only in the villians. But the truth is we all have those deep dark places in our minds and the adventures of Captain Shepperd, #1001 and the rest of the crew speak to us with the voice that inhabits that place in our psyche. It speaks to our fears and those buried deep desires. To the violence and greed we try so hard to suppress.

Another thing I like about this series and this book in particular is the slow evolution of thought regarding #1001. It's most evident in Caleb but you can see it in Fran and Caleb's brother as well. #1001 is unique in so many ways. What I like most is the way she defies expectation and programming and it reminds me of the nature vs nurture debate. The truth is somewhere in between and #1001 illustrates that in an unique and beautiful way. In her flaws I see hope for the imperfect beings in a superficially perfect universe. Hope for the outcasts and rebels. Hope for the small people that never impact the world in a big way but can change the lives of those around them. Because if a synthetic can change the opinion of a man such as Caleb Shepperd then maybe there's hope for the world yet.

I find it really, really difficult to write reviews for the books in this series because they're so amazingly good that I struggle to find the words to talk about them. I know there is no way to do Girl From Above: Trapped justice but I'll do my best to give you full sentences rather than just a whole page of "Read it! Read it! Read it! Read it!"

Every time I think things can't get worse for #1001 Pippa DaCosta proves me wrong, considering that nobody is supposed to know she even exists she's actually become the most wanted synth in the system. She's travelling with Caleb but they're out of luck and running low on credits. Caleb comes up with the idea to scam the casinos on planet Lyra hoping that with #1001's memory they'll be able to earn more than enough to make their escape. Unfortunately he didn't consider the possibility of running into old enemies and now he's in serious trouble. It looks like his only option is to betray #1001 and sell her off to the highest bidder. Caleb has made a lot of bad decisions in his life but can he bring himself to give #1001 to her enemies for a second time?

I want to talk about how much I love these characters, none of them are good guys - you'd see Caleb's picture next to the word anti-hero if you look it up in a dictionary - but they're all fascinating and so multidimensional. You may not always agree with the decisions that they make but you'll be able to understand why they made them and if you're anything like me you'll find yourself rooting for them almost against your own common sense. Throughout the series we've seen a lot of changes in Caleb, #1001 brings out the best side of him but even that may not be enough to save her.For her part #1001 is becoming more human in her reactions to things but at the same time she is still very "other" and her system is getting close to shut down thanks to the multitude of faults in her processor. It was really interesting to see her start to differentiate more between the memories that belonged to Haley and the ones that are part of her new programming, she is starting to mesh the two sides together and become something that is completely unique.

I'm not going to talk about the plot but if you've ever read anything by Pippa DaCosta you should know to expect the unexpected. If you're a fan of this series you'll also know to expect betrayal and deceit, lots of action, shocking twists and probably a little heartache. I honestly have no idea what to expect from the next, and final, instalment but I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on a copy of Girl From Above: Trust. This has become a favourite series and I'm desperate to see all my favourite characters get exactly what they deserve!

I don't read sci-fi. Ever. If I have read sci-fi before, it was probably because of the romance. But it's official. This is now my favorite sci-fi series ever. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself because I haven't read any sci-fi books before (none as far as I could remember) but whatever. I FREAKING LOVE EVERY SECOND OF THIS BOOK.

Pippa DaCosta has upped her game here in Trapped. I've had this arc for months now but decided not to read it immediately because I knew I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO HANDLE MONTHS OF WAITING FOR THE NEXT INSTALLMENT AGAIN. And why am I typing in all caps? (IT'S THE EXCITEMENT AND ADRENALINE THIS BOOK HAS GIVEN ME)

So why read this?
-Caleb <3, one of my favorite antiheroes ever. You will hate him, his guts and the decisions he's made but in the end, you will feel for him and eventually love him. As for me, I LOVED HIM FROM THE START.
-The series is divided into Caleb and 1001's POV and both are equally entertaining.
-the fast-paced plot and vivid action scenes. Seriously not one moment was dull in this book. The five-star rating could attest to that and me yelling every five seconds because every moment kept on surprising me.
-1001 and the TENSION between her and Caleb. She is a machine and it may seem weird at first and yet they shared this awkward kiss and didn't my heart just melt at that.
-Me squealing at the top of my lungs after that ending.

Also, nothing should make me cry about this book because everything and everyone is so badass. But this one scene did. (Chapter 11!!)

Seriously, why only a few people know about these books is beyond me.

More pleeeeaase.

I love this series! It gets better with every book. Caleb had some tough choices to make. Who was he going to trust? Everyone wanted #1001. Was he going to ruin her life a second time? I can’t describe the plot without giving too much away, but all of the characters were going through a phase of self discovery. This was an important part of their lives because it would decide the fate of themselves and those around them.

Caleb surprised me. He is officially one of my top book boyfriends. He’s got faults, lots of them, but it makes him all the more desirable. There is a genuinely good side to him. It’s just hard for that side of him to come to the surface. Sometimes he’s an emotional wreck. He constantly waivers between doing what’s right and doing what’s right for him. Caleb is the perfect blend of asshole and good guy.

#1001’s life was a mess. As she became more human, it waged war with her conflicting protocols. She hadn’t been designed to handle what she was experiencing and it was causing issues. She couldn’t fix herself and had to rely on James to do it. Could he be trusted? Where did his loyalties lie?

I was on an emotional roller coaster while reading this. There was no way to know what anybody was going to do. Some things that happened were truly shocking. Pippa DaCosta is the best at writing grey characters. Her stories are entertaining because you never know who is going to stab whom in the back.

“I’ve never met anyone who plays the nine systems quite like you, kid. I can’t decide if you’re an idiot, surviving by blind luck alone, or if everything you do is deliberate, making you some kind of criminal genius.”

I may not have believed in lady luck, but I believed in her fucking sister, irony. That bitch was bent on nailing me to a wall.

Post-read review:
WELLLLL, that's the end of my pairing in this book. I have 0 idea where this series is going now, but tbh, that's 100% a good thing. Liked it a lot better than I remember liking the first two. Definitely not what the author would have you think, too, which was nice.

Pre-read review:
Honestly, I wasn't in love with the first books, but they were entertaining and I was hooked. I am not entirely sure where it will be heading, but all I know is that a) James & #1001 tbh and b) #1001 needs to not feel for Caleb.

“She’s just code…”

… Well, is she? #1001 is different, but can we truly manufacture souls like we can manufacture lifelike, synthetic bodies that mimic human behavior?
Caleb and the girl who used to be Hailey Hung are about to find out.

/Execute master reboot. File Found/

Pippa Dacosta once again proves her power over her pen (or should I say keybord these days?) in the third installment of “Girl from Above: Trapped.” Expect political intrigue, deceit, an artificial intelligence that ponders her own significance and a delicious mix of budding romance, adventure and friendship in this extraordinary novel that I inhaled in a few days.

Caleb and 1001 are on the run from… Well, pretty much everybody, really. From the powerful Candes family for the death of their sister. From the Fenrir Nine, because Caleb has refused to turn over 1001 to them. Meanwhile, Chitec will stop at nothing to secure her secrets. The same secrets that riddle 1001’s (or One, as Caleb has started calling her) mind. Slowly, just as One is starting to really experience what it means to live, to like… to love, her synthetic mind is slowly failing, and is now threatening her very existence. Worst of all; someone she believed to be her ally, might not have One’s best interests at heart after all. Is Hailey Hung’s tragic life story about to repeat itself?

#DESIGNATION NOT FOUND

Expect heartwrenching twists and turns in the third installment of Girl from Above as the Chitec organization begins to tighten the noose, not only around the renegades aboard Starscream, but the people in the nine systems as well. Before the books comes to an end they will have known bitter betrayal, someone will have paid the ultimate prize, while others are fighting not only for their continued existence, but their very soul.

"She’s real and you’re manufactured. Her life will always be worth more than yours”

"Stars are wishes and wishes are dreams. I have dreams too. Do they mean nothing?"

I’ve always been fond of this little quote by Nicolas Cage:

“The best characters are the ones that somehow manage to be both attractive and repulsive at the same time. If you do that, you're at the center of the universe - if you can find characters who are more ambiguous and can raise more questions than answers.”

I suspect that’s why I’m so fond of all of Pippa’s books. There are no clear-cut heroes in Girl From Above. They’ve all made horrible mistakes, but I hope – and believe – that they are moving towards the better versions of themselves in the final installment of the series, which – unfortunately – isn’t due until next year.

And why do I say unfortunately? Well there is the small matter of the cliffhanger of galactic proportions where the fate of the nine systems as well as one synthetic soul hang in the balance. So bewarned, people, you will be left wanting MORE;-)

Overall rating: 4,5 stars.

My only "complaint" is that I wish each installment had been longer. Because; who wants to be ripped away from their favorite characters prematurely? (Guess I'm a greedy b... but I blame it on my Akil worship, he does set the bar pretty high in that particular department;-)

Oh, one last thing before I sign off: Having read & thoroughly enjoyed the story, I'm not surprised Pippa has been nominated for Favorite Sci-fi Author of 2015. I think we all should show her appreciation by voting for her here: https://www.facebook.com/events/16504...

Gawds, I love this series!

This is your mind after reading Pippa DaCosta.

****THIS IS A DISCLAIMER, IF YOU CHOOSE TO PICK UP THIS AUTHOR AFTER READING THIS REVIEW, DON'T COME CRYING TO ME!!!****
(okay, maybe come crying, but only with a bottle of tequila so we can bawl together while waiting for book 4 to come out...)

How do you POSSIBLY review a book like this??

How?

Basically, things are fucked. Everyone's fucked. Caleb, 1001, Jessie, Bren, Fran, you name it, it's fucked.

I don't understand how I can care so deeply for all these messed up folks, or how your heart is in your throat page after page, but it is. And Caleb....!!!!

Just when I think the man is past all redemption....

...don't let me go.

He didn't. For once, he actually didn't.

1001 stars and forever love.

Here is the thing. I'm speechless. Completely, utterly speechless for the first time in my life. I want to give this book 1002 stars (1001 for One and 1 for Caleb. I love the guy)

I can't explain this book- what it did to me. It wasn't the plotline, it wasn't the never-ending action, the backstabbing, the pain, the heartbreak, the death, the sweet feelings and the tears. It wasn't 1001's humanity or Caleb's dark shattered heart. It wasn't the revenge, it wasn't the sit at the edge of your chair can't tear myself away from the book things. It wasn't even the fact that these characters got me and gut me so much, craving a hole in my iced heart and making camp there.

Yes, all of that was in the book. yes, I love this book so much for each and every thing that happened and for each and every character (Mostly One and Caleb, of course).

But the thing is, what makes this book so meaningful for me, so loved, cherished and well just fucking awesome is the fact that ever since I started reading this series I wished for a book like this one. I wanted this book, I wanted a book exactly like this.

It was as if the author read my most secret wishes and decided to put them in the book. Psyche.

In Girl from Above: Trapped, Pippa DaCosta delivers the most engaging, most emotionally gripping installment to date. Just when I thought I had it all figured out and things were beginning to look a little less ...bleak, well Pippa came along and trampled that little idea of mine.

Caleb-Joe and crew aren't back-in-black in this installment. Instead, he and his crew are stationed on Lyra, trying to win some much needed credits. Out of loot, out of booze, Cale has hit his lowest point yet. Hitting rock bottom -- you would think that this particular situation would shock his system to the point where he'd do what needs to be done -- his guaranteed way out of this constant struggle, but that's not the case. In fact, it's just adding to the struggle.

Give us Hail Lee

It's no surprise that 1001 is different, and throughout the course of this series, more and more of the many groups floating around the systems are starting to realize this. One is becoming quite the hot commodity and many of the factions are willing to pay top dollar (credit) to acquire her. Caleb has many options to choose from concerning trading One, it's just a matter of choosing the highest bidder.

My favorite part of this series, hands down, is the ever-changing relationship concerning One and Caleb, and I was thrown for quite a few loops with this installment. One is starting to sift through her programming, slowly differentiating between the data that is manufactured and the data that is Haley vs the data that is uniquely hers, uniquely One's. As time moves along, more and more of what makes 1001 different is coming through.

Why is the rain red?

But just when things start looking up, just when it seems that there is a ray of hope, Pippa comes along and squashes that idea. Takes anything that could be considered hopeful and smashes it to bits. And then lights the bits on fire. Why?! Why must you do that?! When I say emotionally gripping, what I really mean is that I could hear my heart cracking. And I still can, it's a slow and painful process.

I like the rain when it's red.

The bones of this series, the elements that make it truly an emotionally engaging read, is the fact that the whole story surrounding these characters is a combination of moral ambiguity, betrayal, and mistrust. Each and every character contained in this series is a shady piece of work, each one only forging tenuous alliances as a means to keep the enemy close. Despite their ethical shortcomings, you can't help but root for them, to become invested in them. But as time wears on, those shady elements are starting to seem less and less true. I don't think the characters will end the series with halos atop their heads, but I do think that the poorest qualities will be tested, much as what's happening now, and I don't believe that the poor qualities will win out in the end. I suppose only time -- and the fourth book will tell.

This series continues to delight me and I will certainly miss this series once it concludes in the fourth, and final, installment. But I am happy with the way the overall story has progressed thus far and with the way things ended with Trapped, the wait is going to be fairly brutal.

5 "I f'love this series" Stars

Have you ever read a book and thought “This needs to be a TV show?”? Well, that’s what I think of every time I read a book in this series.

A dash of sexual tension ✔
It's as if I'm getting my own personal TV show right in my head.

Living life in the black is rough, but for Captain Caleb Sheppard it just got a whole lot rougher. With every faction in the nine systems putting a bounty on his head, he is out of money and out of options. He’s desperate and decides to risk going to Lyra, the gambling capital of the nine systems, in hopes that a few games of chance will help keep Starscream in the black. And, of course, he’s not above exploiting 1001’s abilities, if it means a quick way to earn some credit.

I love seeing Caleb’s evolution. He’s still the epitome of an anti-hero, but he’s slowly growing a conscience… And a heart. And as 1001 learns and grows, she’s become more than just the sum of her parts. The banter between One and Caleb is tongue-in-cheek funny, too. You just can’t help but giggle at some of their exchanges.

”Do you come with an owner’s manual, Captain? Because I’d like to study your troubleshooting section.”
“Would you like to strip me down to my nuts and bolts an’ figure out what makes me tick?”
“I knew what made you tick from the moment we first met. That’s why I punched you between the legs.”

Once again, Pippa DaCosta had me glued to my Kindle. With kick-ass world building, dynamic characters, and a fast paced storyline, she makes Sci-Fi fun to read. You should definitely give this series a try. Now if only she’d write faster, because I need the next episode NOW!

Absolutely loved it! I have been looking for a series to blow my mind away and get me lost in the characters and their world and I have found it. I devoured this book within a day – I could not put it down. This series is brilliant and just keeps getting better with each book in the series.

The fast paced and smooth flowing plot kept me on the edge of my seat with an abundance of mystery, intrigue, suspense and action, and a good dose of comedy and romance. The characterisation and world building are excellent, and the plot left me guessing right up until the end.

It is written from two perspectives – 1001’s and Caleb’s, which I loved as I could see both points of view of the characters. I loved that both characters are flawed, which made them more believable and relatable. Caleb is jaded, determined, resourceful and snarky – he tries to do the right thing but is caught in a tight spot where there seems to be only one way out. And 1001 is a lethal, gorgeous robot with programming faults and memories of a woman from Caleb’s past. She is a walking lie detector and more than a match for Caleb.

There was nothing that I did not like about this book and it ticked all the boxes for me for an outstanding read: well written with a brilliant unpredictable plot, plenty of action and suspense featuring a kick ass female and a hot leading man. What’s not to like!

Highly recommended. Girl from Above: Trapped is a fast-moving, action-packed, sizzling ride through a sci-fi fantasy world. I wait with baited breath for the next book in this series.

I'm starting to think that this author lives to wreck me ;) It's no secret that this genre isn't not in my comfort zone, I mentioned it from the start but this author, no matter what genre, knows how to draw me in. This book starts with a bang and this author is not sorry for it, throwing you headfirst into a series of events that will surely get your head spinning.

A few days later, my head is still spinning!

This author creates such wonderful multidimensional characters, pair that with amazing worldbuilding and stimulating twists and turns, and you got yourself a winner! And this book (the entire series in fact) is indeed a winner.

This serious just keeps getting better. While I enjoyed the previous books, this is my favorite installment so far. So many things that happened that I still can't wrap my mind around!

Ugh, and Caleb. It's also no secret that I'm a sucker for anti-heroes. The more lethal, the better. But when you catch a glimpse of a hint of vulnerability under all that grit? I'm putty in his hands! Needless to say, I was putty every time I read Caleb's POV. ;)

#1001 on the other hand... Oh GOD.

I just can't wait to read the next and last (say it ain't so) installment in the series. Literally, I can't wait!

This series is total perfection. Highly recommended for people who like haunted, foul-mouthed anti-heroes who don't stop getting up no matter how many times they're knocked down. Equally haunted heroines, who are darn smart and won't accept any limitations no matter how damning they are. A cast of fleshed-out characters. Impossibly high stakes, nonstop action, and a love story that pits hero against heroine until their causes align, their bond a crucial element in a universe-sized revolution. Amazing. The entire world will hear my fangirl shriek when my pre-ordered copy of book 4 pops up on my Kindle. READ THIS NOW. Start with book 1. You're welcome.

All right, you win. I might be able to forgive Caleb.

What I liked:
Okay, okay, so I've finally stopped hating Caleb (though I still don't like him much). However, his total and utter remorse is finally winning me over, although I'd like to see him stop thinking with his libido (unlikely, I'm sure). Chuffed to see my suspicions about a certain character proved correct. Again, this is superbly written, fast paced and tension packed space opera. There are still the merest hints of a potential romantic HEA, but nowhere near enough for me to label this as a romance of any kind. The SF elements aren't too heavy for those afraid of being blinded by futuristic science, but enough that it satisfies my need for SF world building and the futuristic, advanced tech feel I prefer.

What I didn't like:
Caleb is still a jerk. But that's about all I can put under this heading.

In conclusion:
A tense and exciting penultimate book that has me anxiously awaiting book four with almost the same level of anticipation as going to see The Force Awakens. And that's high praise from me. This one also squeezed that extra star from me to make the 5, which my previous dislike for the 'hero' prevented me from giving. So there you go. Even a jerk can win me over if he's redeemed enough. Not for those who don't like explicit sex, violence, and lots of swearing but definitely for those who like flying by the seat of your pants action SF, and this one has quite a cliff-hanger ending.

So I actually really liked this installment of the series! I thought it was action-packed and clever and a lot easier to relate to the characters, and I liked the storyline and the many reveals and twists. Lots to love across the board. Not to mention more and more focus on the vastness of this world connected by space travel! There can never be enough world-building. I thought the writing was a little better and everything was perfectly enjoyable.

Now, time for a few relevant Firefly gifs, as we all know the comparisons between the show and this series are many:

And my personal favorite, though small:

Okay, I’m dying to know how this series ends with Caleb and his crew after this ending!!! The synth reset, the firefight, the Nine?! Ugh...so many loose ends to tie up!

Pippa has done it again. She has made me love sci fi and want more! Caleb is the very definition of an anti hero but there is a small part you just have to love about him. 1001 or One is becoming more human but something is wrong and the good doctor can't fix her this time. This is the second to last book and I see where Caleb is changing, becoming who he should be and One is the girl to help him. We meet some past characters and some things are revealed that explain a lot. I can't wait for the finale!!!

Am I the only one who does not like this one?
Caleb Shepperd is so incredibly unlikeable that it ruins the story for me.
