My Summer with Wes is a sweet romance, beautifully told through the eyes of Malcom Small. It is a story of coming out, friendship, love and an awful lot of firsts for our beloved MC.

tumblr_m5g3xiTBVV1r50ir4o1_500

I loved this book, there is no angst, just an honest and true delivery of a summer of discovery for Mal, who's eyes and heart are opened by Wes.....to all that life, CAN be. I was swept along on this journey, looking at the world from his point of view, his voice is just perfect for the character, he is endearing and innocent, almost childlike at times with his abundance of enthusiasm and joy at the discovery of all thing's new to him..

We meet Mal, sitting on his porch reading (he does a lot of that), pondering his mundane existence, or what he calls his "Vanilla Pudding" life. Mal has nothing, everything he has done in his life so far has been about escaping from it. Escaping from the bullies who made him hate himself. Escaping from the bruises, broken bones and mental torture that he has had to endure. He hides within himself, tries to make himself invisible to the outside world, wondering WHY?....Why he has been abused all these years by thugs accusing him of being Gay? When Malcom Small was SoooOooo NOT GAY!

His Parents have no time for him, they are not the demonstrative, loving type's. He is basically ignored and left to get on with it! He wants for nothing monetary wise, but he is starved of human and physical contact. He father tells him to "man up" and his mother deals with his injuries. but not the cause or the mental trauma that comes with them.

But he had survived....school was finished and he could go to College and try to survive all over again.

We meet Wes from Mals vantage point on the porch. New neighbours have moved in across the street, they are what Mal thinks of as "Sprinkles" on his "Vanilla Pudding"....a little bit of excitement! Wes...is a breath of fresh air, he is confident, good looking with a "jock" type physique and blond/brown wavy hair. Wes...is also Gay....and comfortable with it. When he asks Mal, if he would like to help him work on his car, Mal feels awkward and apprehensive but that lonely place inside is desperate to say YES, YES, YES. to the very charming, with puppy dog eyes, Wes. After pointing out That he is NOT GAY, as in No. Way. Jose. Gay.....desperate for company he agrees.

It is very clever how Ms Welsh deals with Mals innocence and naivete, we as readers see everything through Mals eyes and what is glaringly obvious to us as readers.....he, is totally oblivious to. This story touched my heart in so many ways. Mal is so fragile and unworldly, overwhelmed by the simple things in life that we all take for granted as given. Wes is compassionate, he understands him and his abilities, for the first time, someone is there for him. Wes is his Friend, a Friend......his very first Friend!

The most moving piece of the book for me, had me blubbering..again! was when Mal had his epiphany, realising, he WAS Gay. It was beautiful and heart breaking as the realisation hit Mal.....ohhh, and that first kiss....His first ever kiss.....break open the tissues!

There are so many firsts in this book for Mal and I loved going through each and every one with him and Wes. They are great characters, who's individual personality's compliment each other. Their interaction has such honesty, all truth and no hidden complexities. I had a very warm and fuzzy feeling Watching Mal grow in confidence over the Summer, both in himself and with others, realising that he can be loved and love in return.

The sex was Hot! and yet another first for our virginal Mal, but once that cherry was popped, hell those hormones were raging!...I loved this quote from his inner voice "Yay me, I gave good head" it just sums up for me just how wonderfully sweet and adorable he was.

This book was recommended to me by my GR friend Kris, thank you for that Kris, I loved it. I will definitely read more books by Missy Welsh, but I have to say I WANT MORE from Mal and Wes, in fact I need more!

We’re mixing it up over on the blog. This month is YA month. As many of you know, I have little interest in books sans banging and full of teen angst, so we compromised on My Summer of Wes. My first thought was, ‘what the fuckadoodle’s up with that cover?’

*shivers*

The word hideous comes to mind. Repeatedly. Seriously. Does that dude, who’s supposed to be Wes, have a mullet? Now I ask you what self-respecting gay dude has a mullet?

But, you know what?

Fuck that fucking cover! Sideways. In the eye.

Superimpose this over that ghastly thing.
description
Oh… whoa! Maybe a little something more… YA.
description

That's better. Pay no attention to that monstrosity of a cover because what's inside is a little sun dipped ray of summer lovin' gem that had me humming a popular song on more than one occasion…

description

Sing it with me! You know you wanna.

My Summer of Wes charmed me except for Mal's parents; I'll get to that in sec. This story is fresh and organic and feel good with little angst. It's my kind of YA. Feel good + boinking! And boy do they boink. Often.

I want you under the trees, under the stars.
Laid bare before me, mine to take, to love.
Come to me in darkness, as we tick into tomorrow,
I want you under the trees, under the stars.

Frottage. BJs. Dirty talk. Big guy bottoms. Outdoors. In the shower. At a rest stop. With their parents in the respective houses. In the bed of the El Camino.

These boys like to get they freak on. I ain't mad at 'em. They haz needs and like 2.5 seconds of rebound time before they're good to go again.

They're both so freakin' KA-ute I want to pinch their cheeks. Mal tell us his story of his first everything and his summer with Wes. He is the geeky kid who was bullied throughout high school and has not a clue what he's into. You know what that means? Yap! Buttsex virgin. 18 yr old SUPER HORNY buttsex virgin. Actually, everything virgin. Wes moves in across the street with his yellow El Camino and flirtiness and sweeps Mal off his feet. He's so excited to have a friend it kind of broke my heart to think how lonely he'd been, starved for affection.

He felt like what home should be-a warm, safe place where no one could hurt me.

It's clear from very early on that Wes is crushin' hard on Mal, but Mal is clueless. Mal comes to the realization that he's attracted to Wes when he realizes he doesn't like the idea of him being with anyone else. They're both adorably possessive of one another as their relationship progresses.

Their relationship did move at lightening speed, but they're 12, so y'know, I went with it. What I didn't care for in the slightest were Mal's parents. Mal's parents can:

description

Thankfully, they were only in it here and there and didn't completely derail the story for me. Wes's parents covered the shortfall. They were delightfully sprinkly.

Thanks to the unicorns for choosing this as our March chat book! I think I might've found a new author stalk admire.

Just because.

Recommend to YA fans who like their YA with boinking.

I loved this one!!! It’s witty, funny and hot!

Yeah, that’s it. I couldn’t stop smiling, either.

I know the pics don’t fit the MC but the chemistry and the story reminded me of My beautiful laundrette, don’t ask me why.

description

Maybe it's because they fit together so perfectly...

description

Maybe it's because they make my mouth water...

description

Maybe it's because it's a secret...

description

Maybe it's because the parents are not that accepting...

description

Maybe it's because one of them is hurt and abused...

description

Maybe it's because one of them drives a car...

description

Maybe it's the fact that they get dirty...

description

Maybe it's because they are hot!

Maybe they're just super cute!

Maybe it's just the feelings they inspire me...

I felt soooooo good after reading it! Stupid smile all the way!

BR with the girls–Susan, Kat, Heidi, Karen, Tara, Elsbeth and Sonia. :)

First of all, the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" fits perfectly here! I have seen this book around for a while, but kept dismissing it on account of that horrendous cover. And I was so wrong about it! I loved it! It was light, fluffy, angst-free, and so sweet my teeth hurt.

I adored Wes from the moment he stood up to those bullies. He was funny, thoughtful, very sexy, and I liked how protective he got of Mal–and a tad bit over-the-top jealous. As for Mal, I had conflicted feelings about him. There were times I felt for him and just wanted to hug him, then I wanted to smack him upside the head for being too naive or coming too close to the damsel-in-distress types who can be found in M/F books so often. Yes, he was abused, yes, he was depraved of love for so long, and he needed to feel safe etc., but sometimes it got to be too much for me. And I found it a little hard to believe he was that innocent at the age of eighteen, regardless of his background. Again, maybe he just gave off that vibe to me.

Anyway, I enjoyed the sexy times–and there were a lot of those–I liked the MCs, and the writing was good. Another thing I wasn't quite on board with was the level of sweetness this book contained. I mean, I do like my angst in books, because then it doesn't feel like I'm reading a fairy tale where the princess–or prince, in our case–gets the knight in shining armor, nothing bad ever happens, and they all live happily ever after.

Ok, so for someone who claims to have liked My Summer of Wes, I seem to be ranting quite a bit. I did love it, though, promise! Looking forward to reading the extended version, too!

3.5 Stars...good times...

Besides having possibly the single worst cover ever published, this book was sweeeeeet as apple pie...with a pound of sugar poured on top. Missy Welsh, you are giving Ms. Mary Calmes a run for her money as the queen of fluff! Absolutely ZERO angst or reason for concern or nare a furrowed brow.

And for maybe 70% of the book, that's exactly what I loved about it. But, then I started making stuff up in my head, reading into things in the story anticipating something, anything, that would at least make me either dip or rise in emotion...but nope...nada...nothing. So, by the end of this very short book, I was a bit bored.

Nevertheless, Wes and Mal are such sweet and likable characters: Mal, I want to own him as my sidekick...and hug him and squeeze him and pet him and pat him on the head. He's so freaking adorable. How can you not love a Kindle-reading, glasses-wearing, computer-fixing, inexperienced, self-proclaimed geek. Adorbs.

And BTW, this is one of the few books where I feel like the 1st person POV worked...because Mal is so insecure and sweet and pet-worthy! :)

If you're coming off a read that has either broken your heart or set you off-track to a dark place or just twisted you up inside, this might be a great follow-up to bring you back to the sunny-side!

Oh what a lovely story. Malcom has spent most of his 18 years being ignored by his indifferent parents who just look the other way when he's constantly bullied for appearing to being gay. His world is Vanilla pudding, bland and tasteless and all this time our poor lonely Malcom is pretty damn sure he's NOT gay until the new family move in across the street and he's confronted by the wonderful bright positive force that is Wes. What to say about Wes... Where do you start? He's gay, he's not ashamed of it, he's gorgeous, kind, loveable, fun, protective, sweet, sexy..... The list goes on. He's almost too good to be true and he sweeps Mal right off his feet . In Mals own words " now there was a colourful little sprinkle on the vanilla pudding of my life"

The first half of the book is dedicated to watching Wes bring Mal out of his closed shell, as he breaks down Mals barriers. Showing him that life doesn't have to be spent worrying and stressing about whats waiting around the corner... In the very first scene where they meet Mal sees Wes stand up to the bullies who have been making his life a misery and to him its a revelation! Its inevitable that over time spent with Wes - who treats him so nicely, flirting but not in a way that makes him uncomfortable - Mal realises the simple fact that he is gay and he wants Wes, and its patently obvious that Wes is attracted to Mal but he lets him come to the realisation in his own time. The scene when he goes to Wes' house and admits his feeling is just adoreable but its also hot and steamy too! Once their feelings are out in the open to each other, they can't keep their hands off each other and the love scenes are plentiful and oh so sweetly sizzling that they bring on the tingles...normally it becomes repetitive but in this case it doesn't matter because these two endearing characters are so right for each other and the love scenes show exactly how they feel about each other. There are a few little hiccups but its their love story that fuels the story and it is a love story in the truest sense... For myself this was a case of insta love that works. I fell in love with Wes before Mal did! LOL. :)

I know that this will be the sort of story to go back to time and time again just to get that feel good feeling! I fell in heart with both these engaging characters but it was Wes who stole it, and I'll be surprised if he doesn't steal yours when you read this super book! Another keeper... * sigh*

Update for the edited and expanded edition:

The changes are adding some angst and I like it even more than the first edition. :-)

*********************************************

4.5 sugar coated stars

Oh, Wes and Mal, my little boinking bunnies!

Oh my do they boink! Like all the time and everywhere!

Though besides this we get such an adorable story about Mal the geeky guy who got bullied by the other guys at school for being gay - except he didn't know he is gay to that time - and Wes the new guy from across the street.

I loved Wes from his first encounter with the bullies on.
“What are you? Some kind of fag?”
My new neighbor actually took a step closer to Rick, who had him by at least six inches and twenty pounds.
“I’m the kind of fag who’d love to thrust his cock into your tight ass. You interested, honey ?”

It was pretty clear that he had a crush on Mal from the start. But since Mal haven't realized he is gay when they met, he settles for being his friend. The first friend Mal ever had!
“I wanted you in my life from the beginning, Mal. Anyway I could have you.” He snuggled me closer. “Even if it meant just as friends.”

I really felt for Mal. The bullies, his indifferent, snobish parents, never having a friend. It tugged at my little heart and I wanted to hug him until everything's fine again. And when Wes comes into his life...
Now there was a colorful little sprinkle on the vanilla pudding of my life.

OK, maybe their lovestory was moving in lightning speed.

And the I-love-yous are thrown around like candy on a children's birthday.

But you know what?

If you like cute, sappy YA with boinking (like rabbits! I tell ya!) and little to no angst, this will be the right story for you.

The second time I’ve read this and I’m still very much in love with this book and all its sappiness.

There is just something about this book that makes me go all
description

Yes, it’s sugary sweet. Yes, the I love you’s are all over the place.. Yes, it is very low on the angst and unrealistically lovey dovey at times. But I don’t care!

I totally fell in love with Mal and his insecure ways. How he has struggled all these years because he kept getting beat up in school. And the cold way his parents treated him…
description

And Wes, he was perfect for Mal. I could just feel the love between these two.

And did I mention the sex? The incredibly large amount of sex this short book packs. Oh my… It was amazing…

description

I mean, these guys were horny ALL the time! I loved it.

So if you are looking for a short sweet read with lots of sex:

What a delicious little morsel this was. The Summer of Wes is the endearing story of Mal and Wes. I'm not going to rehash the blurb but I will tell you that it's a friends to lovers, coming out story. It's a quick steamy fun read. I'd actually had it on my TBR before and took it off because of the cover.

^^ yup that was me- the asshole who judged a book by it's cover. Then "Boys In Our Books" had a summer read recommendation and this came up so I figured why not. So glad I did. I couldn't put it down! 4.5 Stars!

I loved this book!!!!
I reread it whenever I need a pick- me-up !

Ok, time for another reread! :)
I finished, and at least for me it's still a great feel good story.
Wes has been bullied by peers and ignored and neglected, at least emotionally by his parents.
Then the new neighbors move in and his whole life changes. I think it's a sweet coming of age/coming out story .

This book is indeed first person. What usually deters me from first person is not being able to get the perspective of both characters thoughts, but I'm not going to complain this time or on this book. I'll get to the why later on in my thoughts of the book in my review. Patience is a virtue, folks.

The book centers around Wes and Mal meeting up when Wes becomes the next door neighbour during summer break away from school. It's very interesting that because of the many years of being bullied Mal has lost all confidence in himself and the self esteem level is at an almighty low; even scared of his own shadow, till Wes comes along, turns Mal's universe on it's axis and breaks into his shell; obliviating that pattern of hate and cruelty that Mal suffered most of his teenaged life. Mal is only eighteen, Wes is considerably older, but throughout it I kept question if this was indeed a tight bond created between the two or just a summer fling.

I'd be interested to see another story on this. To delve deeper into the life and future of Mal and Wes. That which takes place once the school years are over and life really begins for the two of them. I'd like to see Mal finally come out to his parents and face the challenges life has to offer. Wes does want commitement and a long lasting relationship and he did question Mal on it, but Mal is young and inexperienced. Let's face it, Wes is his first in every which way. First boyfriend, first to love, first to have sex with... first of many's.

Maybe IF there's a next book it would be in Wes' POV instead. It was pretty sad and pathetic to see Wes had this loving family and Mal's basically didn't give a shit, or mabe they did and just had their own whacked way of showing it.

Would I would have liked to see was more interraction between Mal and his folks the way we'd seen between Mal, Wes and his folks. All in all I really took a liking to this story, I was able to understand and like Mal even though his thoughts were goofy at times, and the author, Missy, from what this book I've just read has great potential to produce more great stories that I definately would buy.

:two thumbs up:

I picked up this book because I want to read other story with young-adult as character (I so love young-adult gay stories ^_^). This book starts very good --- Mal has been bullied as gay all through high school. He never really thinks that he IS gay though. He survives high school and cannot wait to start a new life in college where everything is new, no one knows about his bullying years. Then he meets his across-the-road neighbor, Wes, who is out and proud, and takes Mal under his wing. Then suddenly, Mal thinks of how it is to kiss Wes.

I love the voice of Mal. How he thinks that his world is vanilla until he meets the proudly out Wes, across neighbor, who suddenly adds sprinkles in his life. Mal is the typical nerd ... he loves reading (he's a Kindle-ho!), he's good with computer, but also he's a survivor because no matter how many bones broken or bruised, he still survived high school. Then when he finally realizes that he is gay, that he wants to explore the life of being a couple with Wes -- and summer is all about exploring the sexual things.

Now THIS is when I start to get bored.

I'm really NOT a prude, but when a story starts with a promise of romance, I always think that too much sex kills the bliss. After Mal decides to explore his sexuality, this book becomes almost mainly about sex, and I just start skipping pages after pages (just pressing the next button on my Kindle). If I want to read stoy with lots of sex, I prefer if the book plainly stated as erotica. Romance doesn't have to be translated to so many sex. In addition, I expect more exploration on how Mal deals with telling his parents ... something more emotional, I guess.

This book starts as 4 stars, but by the ending, I just shrug it away, and put it as a so-so, albeit sweet story.

BR, January 2nd with Susan, Kat, Tara, Karen, Christina, Sonia, Momo and Heidi. (Re-read for Susan and me!)

Shoot, this second read was just as good…

I loved Mal.. His insecurities because of the bullying all his high school years, the indifference of his parents… I was hurting for him.

And then he met Wes, sweet Wes!! Wes who became so much more than his friend.

”I am gay, Wes. I just didn’t know until recently.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“What do you mean, you know?”
“You always look people in the eye when they talk to you. It’s kind of unnerving at first, but then it’s really great because I always know I have your full attention.
But then, last week, you kept looking somewhere else when I talked to you. That’s when I knew you were getting it.”

And another book full of sexy times… Them discovering each other all.the.time

Nothing more, nothing less…

I should recommend this if you’re looking for a short, sexy story!!

Oh. Geez. The feels. (BONUS ***Needy and greedy virgin lovin for the WIN***)

This book was perfect. Not perfect as in no plot holes (His Dad? Really?) or errors (even in the re-edited version there is still quite a lot) but perfect as in....it was just what I needed at just the right time. Mostly, I'm a jaded and rather bitter asshole so I usually find sweet...boring and fu-fu-ey (it's a word, ok?!?). But this book had just enough of the spicy stuff to keep me interested plus it was tender, it was lovely, it was sad, it was poignant, it was hot AF, it was achingly sweet, it was heart wrenching and most of all it was HOPEFUL. I loved Mal. He was such a vibrant character so full of love and life after all the shit life has heaped on him. To watch him grow, to watch him come into himself and gain confidence was truly beautiful. He deserves his Wes.

Loved it.

It's YA month at the blog, which in general is NOT my thing. But, unicorns are good at compromising. Sometimes. Not really. But, we can all agree we like a book with some well written boning and a great story, Summer of Wes gave me both - YAY!

It was YA without ridiculous drama and I got to read about completely charming characters. I don't know why I hadn't read this little gem sooner. Actually I do. It's the cover. How unfair is that? Very. I literally judged a book by its cover. Shame on me.

Thank you friends for picking this one. Y'all done good!

My Summer of Wes by Missy Welch is a sweet and sexy romance that left me with a smile on my face when I finished the book. Even though this book is told in first person with Mal’s point of view, I didn’t feel cheated by not knowing what was going on in the other characters minds. It’s a very well written and fun filled book, and I loved every minute of it.

Malcolm “Mal” believes he lives in a vanilla pudding world where everything is very sterile and has no personality. For the past four years, Mal has been terribly harassed and bullied by several jocks at school. He’s been beaten and called horrible names like ‘fag’ so he’s made efforts to be unnoticed by others. Mal’s parents have pretty much ignored the ongoing trauma that Mal has had to endure during his high school years. They just do their thing and let Mal do his. When new neighbors move across the street from Mal, it puts his parents in an uproar. The new neighbors obviously don’t live by the 'vanilla pudding' rules like having beige or colorless furniture when the red couch was taken off of the moving truck. But, it was the Wes, the new neighbor’s son that puts a much needed colorful sprinkle in Mal’s vanilla pudding world.

Wes is everything Mal thinks he’s not. He’s gorgeous, fun, athletic and gay. When Wes puts the bullies that has harassed Mal in their place, Mal is even more impressed by his courage to be himself and not take any slack from others. To Mal’s surprise, Wes approaches him and wants to hang out with him. Mal of course, is thrilled but worried once that Wes finds out what a geek he is, he won’t want to hang out with him anymore. But, to Mal’s confused delight, Wes seems to really enjoy hanging out with Mal. As a friendship develops, Mal starts to feel an attraction to Wes, and has to face that he’s been living in denial of being gay for his entire life. Will Mal be able to accept his sexuality and open himself up to the true love he could find with Wes?

I loved this coming of age story. I really appreciated how Mal was able to come to terms with his homosexuality and really evolve into his own man by the end of the book. Mal and Wes really brought out the best in one another, and they had a very sweet and endearing relationship that lived with me long after the book was over. Both Mal and Wes were amazingly well written characters that both endeared themselves within my heart.

There isn’t a lot of angst in this story. It’s just a sweet and feel good book that left me with a smile on my face when I finished reading the last word. I will happily put My Summer of Wes on my keeper shelf where I will enjoy it for many years to come.

My Summer of boinking Wes is a sugar filled little number that is sure to cause some cavities.

I think I've become very cynical in my old age but I found the level of 'love' a bit hard to believe and I could of done with a bit of angst to be honest. Turns out I like me a bit of heartache so I can avoid the toothaches. I also felt there was a few things that were left unresolved but it looks like this is going to be part of a series so I guess those things will be dealt with in upcoming books.

I did enjoy Mal and Wes and their story, when it wasn't over the top sweet it was over the top smexy and I like that kind of over the top. It's a total feel good book and would be perfect if you are a bit pissed off at the world and need something to perk you up. If there are more Mal and Wes books to come I will totally read them but I'll probably leave them for a day that I want to punch people for being idiots so that all that sugar can sweeten me up a bit.

Thank you to the lovely ladies Susan, Kat, Heidi, Karen, Cristina, Elsbeth and Sonia for the BR. Sorry I wasn't very active.

And thanks millions to Susan for the recommendation. Even though it was a bit too sweet for me it was a fun one and hot. ;)

Wow, this story was really HOT...ahem...I mean sweet. I've been meaning to read this for a while now but for some silly reason I thought it was YA!! Um, no, not YA at all!

This was a very cute and sweet coming of age story without much angst at all.

A perfect read for a rainy afternoon.

Epic BR with, Susan, Kat, Cristina, Heidi, Tara, Elsbeth and Sonia

Goodreads Why no half stars ?

A firm 3.5 sugary stars a really sweet read for most of the time.

I really enjoyed the first 85% of this, especially the beginning where Wes and Mal get to know each other, and Mal discovers his sexuality. In particular the early scene where Wes confronts the bullies is excellent. The final 145% was over sweet for me, while I don't like the feeling of artificial angst I felt this needed some tension, some kind of discussion with Mals parents perhaps ?

That being said I really liked Mal, that mixture of intelligence, awkwardness and sweetness is really endearing, and the way that he throws himself into a sexual relationship ,after feeling unloved for so long, was great. And they had a lot of sex.

Wes, cool and hot, he loved Mal from the start, I felt that there was more to tell about him, but as this was Wes' story we never got to hear it, which was a shame - but the first person POV really worked, so maybe there will be a sequel ?

Overall a fun read with very endearing characters, and sex -

Well...this was a nice sweet and hot little number. I enjoyed it very very much. I also thought Mal's inner voice was pretty funny, especially in the beginning. Wes was just perfection. So sweet and so patient..sigh..
Looking at the fugly cover you wouldn't expect this book to be this good and his freaking HOT.
But, that again shows...don't judge a book by it's cover. There was no angst in this book, just a sweet fluffy lovestory with lot's of steamy moments.

4 stars...liked it a lot !!

FOUR & A HALF STARS--Ah...can you smell that? It's the smell of young love, written oh so right.

It's a excellent story, low angst (there's a scene with gay bashing and alludes prior to Malcolm meeting Wes) and smexy scenes (Malcolm & Wes are 18 and 24 years old respectively, so a lot of sexing is to be expected. Hell I'm surprised they aren't going at it again as I type.)

I loved Wes and Malcolm's love. The freshness and newness of it all. The silly poetry, glances, the come hither stares, the easy jealousy of anything disrupting the 'couple' time. The author was spot on. And for the characters, the entire story felt realistic, not staged.

This is a great example of a M/M romance for newbies to the genre.

I've been on a winning streak with these ebooks. This one rates 4 1/2 and was another entertaining, take you away kind of book. Very tender, sweet and super sexy. Just do yourself a favor and don't look at that horrifying cover.

I liked this one okay. It was a sweet story. I enjoyed both characters. I absolutely adored Wes. I <3 him. I want to marry him (although he wouldn't want me because I'm a girl) but still. I also liked Mal for about 90% of the book but, frankly, I was disappointed with the ending.

This was really an HFN and a pretty shaky one at that. Why? Mal. He's young, immature, and inexperienced. His encounter with was evidence of Mal's inexperience. Wes, being six years older, has had a wealth of life experiences and wants to be in a committed relationship. I totally get that. Supposedly, Mal professes to want the same. I get that too. I just think his naivete is a recipe for disaster for them. His attitude about attests to this. What happens when they start pressuring him about dating? What if they try to set him up? What if he and Wes run into someone who knows his parents? Or someone who knows someone who knows his parents? Being out but not to his parents is too simplistic, unrealistic, and further evidence of Mal's immaturity.

These issues are all well and good, considering this was a coming of age story. But we're left holding the bag, so to speak. Either this was the start of the series or a stand-alone with a stupidly simplistic ending. The former would be great, the latter not so much.

Lastly, this book had tons of sex. I love smexy, sexy scenes as much as the next m/m romance buff but the amount of sex in this book was over the top for a coming-of-age story IMHO. It detracted from the relationship and character development, which is usually my focus in the YA genre. I would have happily traded some of the steamy real estate for resolution of the issues identified above. Just my two cents.

Bottom line: I LOVED Wes but over-the-top sex and Mal's immaturity made this a lackluster read for me.

I LOVED IT!! I would have rated it higher if I could. Everyone should have a Wes in their life. I loved him and Mal, they were so sweet together. I would have been finished earlier but of course life got in the way, LOL. I want more of Wes and Mal. I would love to know how they're doing now. Great book by Missy Welsh, she is now on my autobuy list!!

Update:12/16/16. I'm rereading because it's been updated extensity. I loved it the first time I read it in 2010 and I'm sure I will love it again.

2nd Update:12/17/16. ***I loved this book when I read it the first time in 2010 but with it being revised and extended I loved it so much harder. From the first pages I loved Mal and Wes! Watching them fall it love was just so adorable and beautiful. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.***
