Prince Liam of Broskoe will no longer bow to his mother’s outrageous orders. Because of his speech impairment, the result of a childhood illness, most people— including the queen— believe him to be a half-wit. Neglected in his upbringing, Liam has learned to take what he wants, by whatever means necessary, be it a lover, an education, or secret training as a spy. Forced into hiding, he flees to neighboring Doros and gets work in the kitchen of the castle keep.

Finley, Duke of Doros, finds himself between a rock and a hard place. The King of Carsson has once again demanded an increase to the annual levy, and Doros’s resources are dwindling due to a poor harvest, worsened by early snows. Not even he, the mightiest of warriors, can stop winter from coming early, but he will not stand by and watch his people starve.

Two men— two lonely hearts— meet under the strangest of circumstances. Each learns to grapple with formidable enemies: not only the forces of Mother Nature, but the darker aspects of human nature. They must overcome greed, lust, loneliness, and betrayal, as well as their own insecurities, if they are to find that one thing that makes life worth all the trouble.

DETERMINED is a romance inspired by the nineteenth-century German tale Allerleirauh, written by the brothers Grimm. The most common English translation for this title is All-Kinds-of-Fur.

WARNING: In addition to depictions of violent combat and death, which some readers may find objectionable, this book contains graphic sex scenes and is unsuitable for underage readers.

Reading, reading – what’s more beautiful than a book? Between each cover lie many worlds to explore! Having spent her youth in an array of libraries, it is no wonder that the attic of Bealevon’s home is filled with crates full of books.

Due to the small German romance book market, fast reading Bealevon was forced to turn to the English language originals at last. This improved her English so much she worked several years for a German publisher as an English reader in between other jobs. Her first love of m/f romances burnt out after a decade of mind clouding stories in the mid-nineties, and she turned back to her hobby of reading about historical events.

Delighted by the invention and spread of the ebook, she tentatively tried some free ones. One of those happened to be an m/m romance, and she was caught, hook, line and sinker. Discovering books that were diamonds as well as coal shaped her taste. Aside from fluffy fantasy and fairy tale, she likes action and fighting in her books. And there are definitely not enough of them on the market!

For years, she dabbled in fanfiction and enhancement of existing stories for her own enjoyment, continually pulled between reading more and writing by herself. As soon as her son moved out, she grabbed the opportunity of self-publishing at last, sat down and wrote – in English… although her high school English teachers probably turn over in their graves as she was a mediocre pupil at best. She gets much needed solitude for working out the details of the chapters while walking her dog twice a day. No effort is spared to make sure her stories are logical and believable, yes, even the fairy tales...

She lives with her husband and her dog in northern Germany and loves to hear from her readers!

This was a fun alternate-universe historical, or fairytale, by a new-to-me author. Although not a classic fantasy with magic or non-human races, it is clearly set in a land long ago and far away.

Prince Liam is small, gay, and speech-impaired. His autocratic mother, the Queen of Broskoe, has never thought much of him, and despite being the sole heir, he has not been trained in traditional ways. But some trusted retainers made sure he had a different training, suited to his nature - that of spy and assassin. So when his mother spins wilder and wilder plans, which involve Liam only as a powerless puppet, he runs away. With the help of his friends, and disguised as a woman, he finds refuge in a distant dukedom, in a foreign nation, to wait and watch.

There he meets Finley, the honorable and beleaguered Duke. And although the duke thinks he's a kitchen maid, they connect at different levels. Duke Finley feels alone, despite having his aging mother and some good friends in his keep. The King whom he is pledged to is demanding so much tribute that the Duke cannot feed his own people. The odd kitchen maid is someone to talk to, to ease a moment here or there, but Finley is in a deep bind. Something has to change. But Finley will be very surprised by the options that he encounters.

This book was an enjoyable, fast read. There were moments of surprise in the plot. I'm not sure the resolution is a permanent political HEA, but it is a personal one. The characters were a nice contrast, although at the climax I'd have liked Finley's honor to be a bit of a stumbling block to the resolution. The language is sometimes a little modern, and yet, how can you talk about anachronism in a book where the characters are not likely to be actually speaking English? Sometimes the immediacy of more modern phrasing seems appropriate.

The writing was smooth, well-edited, with a nice balance of detail and action. I didn't fall emotionally in love with the main characters, but I'd happily read more of their adventures, if the climactic action turned out to have dangerous consequences... A fun read.

In the mood for a fairy tale? This story will take you away on an adventure through snowy countries and deep forests. You’ll meet a prince who is on the run from his crazy mother and a duke who is fighting for his country. These two men will face battles, both physical and within themselves. This story is so many things; we have hurt-comfort, we have two alpha males, a man with a pet, an MC with a disability, there are princes and dukes and spies and kitchen maids, this story is a fairy tale and an adventure, it’s a gay for you, it’s about trusting and believing in a better future. And most of all it’s a tale about falling in love.

I enjoyed this greatly, Ms. Nolan knows how to tell a story and how to paint a beautiful world!

Determined is an engaging tale that was full of surprises. Liam has had difficulty speaking since a childhood illness. His royal mother has very little time for him, believing his faculties to be as damaged as his voice. When life becomes untenable for Liam and he believes he must flee the country he crosses the border and begins a new life disguised as a mute kitchen maid Lynne.

He finds himself working in the castle keep of Finley Duke of Doros to whom Liam is drawn. Liam is unsure about whether Finley would be open to a same sex relationship however they strike up a friendship in the gardens of keep enjoying each others company and having little difficulty communicating in spite of "Lynne's" muteness.

The story has a lot of derring do once Liam discovers he must return to his own kingdom. Finley is never far from his mind and both men face trials that may be easier to handle in partnership.

I had mixed feelings about this story, I was charmed by the tale, but I wasn't ever fully immersed in it. Determined felt very much as if it was being narrated and in a sense I was observing the action from afar without being fully engaged in it. Perhaps this is the author writing in a second language, I am not quite sure. All the ingredients were there, but I kept watching the page count and percentage roll by until I could finish the story. I just wasn't gripped enough despite liking both the characters and the plot; and yet I can imagine curled up by the fire as someone told me the story and being totally enchanted by it.

So, if you fancy a folk tale with an unpredictable plot then I would have no hesitation in recommending this (even better if you can find someone to read it to I think). What I particularly admired about the book was that Finley could see beyond Liam's disability to the independent, clever and brave individual who coped with discrimination and rose to every challenge set.

Once I had finished the book, I took a nosey at the pictures that inspired the story. They were a real treat. In fact Liam took me by surprise, he is much dishier than I imagined...I kinda wish I had checked out the pictures beforehand, it might have enriched my reading experience even more.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Ms. Nolan for offering up your story.

This story is based on a well-known fairy tale: Peau d'âne written by Charles Perrault in France and its variant Allerleirauh written by Jacob Grimm and his brother in Germany. I was surprised in the comments of some other readers that it is not very well known outside Europe. The original story is about incest but here it is not the main topic just the starting point of the book .

A romance that begins as a fairy tale and will carry us into a historical world full of adventures, conspiracies, fighting, death and of course love. It is well-written, easy and pleasant to read despite a few scenes with some violence (but which have their place in the context of the story).

I really like Finley, he is interesting, endearing and credible. But I have some reluctances about Liam... he makes me think of a character’s caricature (he looks like more a sex maniac than a prince at the beginning). Luckily he improves a bit at the end! There are also a few interesting and endearing secondary characters (who would also deserve to have their own story written).

There are many interesting things in this book: the historical aspect (I think that story takes place in the middle ages), exciting adventures, full of suspense and well told for each of the characters and a few love scenes (just what it should be… neither too much or too little). I enjoyed reading this book and would have like a sequel.

Are you looking for a book full of deception, murderous plots and unwavering friendships and love set in a medieval era? Look no further.

Meet Prince Liam, continuously overlooked and underestimated because of his slender appearance and because he’s mostly mute. A fact that has served him well in the past during his secret life as a spy and assassin. Now however, due to his mother - the Queen’s latest and crazy schemes he’s forced to flee from the castle and hide as a servant in enemy territory. There he meets the lonely duke Finley, who is fighting against hope to provide for his people when the king is trying to destroy him. They form a strong friendship with each other and soon both of them are looking for something more. But the sudden appearance of the King’s men forces the men apart while fighting to keep what’s rightfully theirs.

The book was well paced, with interesting and likable characters, both main and secondary. I love the fact that this book is set in a world where people can be openly gay and no one thinks twice about that fact, they aren’t ridiculed or forced to hiding (for the most part), it just is a part of life. I would’ve liked a more of a development of Liam and Finley’s relationship, and not just told that it was there and it was strong. But overall a very enjoyable read.

So pick up this book and dream away to a faraway land full of love, friendships and battles for justice and peace.

I received a copy of this ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book!

First, the setting: This book was apparently inspired by a German story from the 19th century. I don't know the story, but we have Kings and Queens, travel by horseback, sword fights, and politics. It was fun being transported back in time, to a place where gay relationships are apparently commonplace and acceptable in some cities.

The characters: Liam is small and almost mute, and is written off by most people. He has a few close friends and supporters--Pierre (his assistant, I think?) and Tady and Zarrett (his assassin/spy trainers). Finley is a large man, but cares greatly for his people and is willing to do anything for their well being. Ironically, Liam is the more confident of the two when they begin relationship. I enjoyed reading their interactions because of this, although it did take a while for them to get together. Liam spends much of the first part of the book in disguise and only meets with Finley when Finley is asleep and unaware (kind of) of what is happening.

The writing: I enjoyed the colorful descriptions and flew through most of the book. It was very easy for me to imagine the setting and dialogue.

This was such a wonderful read! I enjoyed Liam and Finley’s journey to love and happiness. The author gifts us with detailed world-building and wonderful descriptions that make the story vivid. I also loved the modern spin on a medieval society that accepts gay relationships.

Liam was a surprising character in the way he dealt with his disability and the resulting discrimination, and I thought him a strong and…well… “determined” personality. Although there were times I found it hard to connect with him and his actions, I grew to like him as the story developed. Finley, on the other hand, is one of those men you just want by your side. I adored him for his—again—determination to keep his people safe. He’s a wonderful leader who deserves a loving partner by his side.

The writing was good with only some minor errors. I liked the pacing of the story and don’t agree with some of the comments that say it was too long. But maybe that’s just me because I always want more ;-)

If you like a historical romance with some twists and surprises thrown in, and two strong male characters, you should give “Determined” a shot.

This book was given to me for free in exchange for an honest review.

Liam, the prince of Broskoe, is on the run from his mother the Queen, who has suggested a very screwed up proposition. His mother believes Liam is a simpleton because of a speach impediment from a childhood illness. She treats him like a child and with disgust, and therefore so do many others. When he comes of age to train as a warrior he is forbidden, but some believe in him and he is secretly trained as a spy. While on the run he ends up disguising himself as a mute servant female at Finley, the Duke of Doros home. Finley has problems of his own keeping his people from starvation due to an alliance with a traitorious king. Liam has his sights on Finley from the start and comes up with an unconventional way of getting his attention. Due to certain circumstances situations change and difficulties are overcome.

Both characters are well written. And the secondary characters are fantastic. The only problem I had was that I thought to myself (several times) that both Liam and Finley had their minds on sex when they should have been on taking care of business. Some things in the story (like a Duke traveling without his own guard and leaving someone he doesn't know in charge of his home and people) were unbelievable. That being said I did have a good time reading this. The premise of the story was new and had some interesting twist. It also had a lot going on and moved along at a nice pace. I'll definately give this author another look.

Considered an idiot because of a childhood illness that ravaged his voice, Prince Liam, is disregarded by most people. When Liam' s mother, the queen orders him to be prepared to wed her so they can produce an heir to fulfill the prophecy. Liam who enjoys the company of men decides to escape with the help of his butler/valet/childhood caretaker. His game plan is to dress up as a woman and find employee with the Duke of Doros.

Finley, the Duke of Doros, has his own issues with his dukedom and nonexistent love life. But nightly visits from a stranger, changes things for Finley and starts him down a different path than the one he imagined.

I admit I was worried that Liam was being so unsafe but the time frame he lived in didn't have condoms. He was more or less what some may consider a manwhore or maneater. I was actually waiting for the moment he would fall in love with Finley. Finley was just so talented with how graceful he handled everything. I mean he was alluring with the way he practiced with his men, the way he interacted with people and he did save Liam from a bear attack.

Liam's behavior when interacting with Finley was enjoyable to see. He was sincere and actually concerned over pleasing Finley. I liked the extent in which he went through to ensure that Finley was safe and happy.

Liam is the crown prince of Broskoe, but he finds himself mostly sneered at or disregarded due to his difficulty with speaking. Because of his vocal cord issue, many think he's simple-minded. But that couldn't be farther from the truth. Not only is he very intelligent, but he's also trained as a spy. After he receives disturbing news which prompts him to run away from home, he ends up at the home of the Duke of Doros, Finley. Dressed as a woman, he works in the kitchens there as a mute maid. Despite their seeming difference in stations, he begins a friendship with the Duke.

Overall the story was well-written, with few grammatical errors or typos. However, it could have done with some editing. I definitely started watching the bottom of the screen as I read to see how much was left. I did enjoy both MCs as you are able to get a sense of their motivations and thoughts.

I have no familiarity with the fairy tale on which this story is loosely based, but after finishing, I immediately searched for it on wikipedia. It is definitely different but the author kept enough elements from the original story that someone familiar with the tale would be happy to see where those subtle mentions crop up.

‘Determined’ is a fascinating story with a wonderful atmosphere that leaves no doubts the characters are living in old times. Prince Liam looks fragile and small, and because of his speech impairment a lot of people don’t take him seriously. They can’t see how strong, how loyal and smart he is, and one day, to escape the dubious fate his mother prepared for him, Liam runs away.

Finley is kind, protective and honest. He tries to do what’s best for his people, so every betrayal cuts him deep. When they meet, the connection forms, even though it takes some time before Finley realizes just who Liam is. They form a union then, based both on love and on necessity.

The style of writing was good. However, I wish there was more character development, more focus on romance, more showing than telling. While I felt Finley and Liam had chemistry, they didn’t really get to know each other or spend time together. Still, the atmosphere was believable and the characters interesting, so I’d give this story 3.5 stars.

If you don't know the Grimm brother's tale A Cloak of All Furs, great! Do not look it up. (But I will suggest giving it a quick read once you've finished this fantastic book.) We've all read "alternate" fairy tale and legends, and know how the story goes. Determined becomes the legend we want, the men we root for, the villains we despise. This is the one for role players and reenactors. This is the one for Forgotten Realms and Dungeons and Dragons readers (minus the big, scary monsters). This was the perfect book for me.

This started out well. I was drawn into this world and Liam. I love a slightly disadvantaged hero. Finley was wonderful. Strong and gruff. I was looking forward to some deadly plots and fighting action.

Sadly about half way this one started to lose its way for me. Once Finley and Liam joined together there was a continuous loop of sex. Admittedly it was told in a way of building their relationship. But I found myself bored.

The exciting climax I envisioned was rather disappointing at the end. The stealth and chase were great but with no epilogue there was no real closure for me. It just ended rather flatly.

Overall a nice read but nothing to keep me remembering it.

Liam & Finn
It was fun, original and entertaining. I loved humble, disabled Liam who was also quite the player and surprising. I loved the twist to fairy tale and ‘Peau d’âne’ (do not know the translation of this one, there is no Dysney of it 😝) is my favorite along with Beauty and the Beast. It’s quite rare to find a retelling of this one so this was quite the treat. And then it was a bit too long and felt unecessary...
I will read more of this author! 😁✨💖✨😁

3.5 of 5 stars – Fun Reinvention of a Fairy Tale.
[Thanks to the author and Goodreads' Don't Buy My Love program for a free copy in exchange for an honest review]

I love gay fantasy and romances, and for me, the retelling of a Grimm fairy tale increased my attraction, and I'd say I was satisfied with the read.

This had all the hallmarks of a "romance" novel, with the addition of some scenes that were a little more racy, which was fine by me. I was curious and read a little about the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, A Cloak of All Furs, and this m/m reinvention followed the original storyline fairly closely, with of course the nice gay twist. The story kept me interested, particularly the addition of the spying part (which wasn't part of Grimm).

Bealevon Nolan's writing was easy to read, nicely descriptive, and moved along at a pretty good pace. I did feel, though, that particularly early on, there was more telling the story, rather showing, saying and doing. But it eventually turned into a good story with suspense, and I got wrapped up in the relationship that appealed to the romantic in me.

I did have to keep in mind that this was a romance, and a fairy tale at that, so for the sake of enjoying the story I did give some leeway - for example, I liked the MCs but their characters weren't deeply developed, there was some implausibility in the relationships along with some rather convenient circumstances , the court politics and machinations were fairly simple and not too involved (thus not as intriguing), , and it was a bit unrealistic that an intelligent and aware guy like Finley, at his mature age, would be completely oblivious to and then suddenly attracted to men; it just doesn't happen that way among guys.

A bonus as part of this romance were the multiple sex scenes that were mostly well told, especially later on being particularly descriptive and passionate. The scenes made sense, weren't too many, and generally fit in well with the story, which drew me in all the more.

Upon reflection, the title can have many meanings - a determined prince, a determined duke, determined as in a future determined for you, or determined as by fate - and it was nice how all this played out into a fun reinvention of a fairy tale.

I think about 3/4 of the book were at 4 to 4.5 stars, but the last portion wasn't as good. So, it dropped it a little for me. I think the sex-fest towards the end was unnecessary. And the final adventure to the King was too quick, almost an afterthought.
