Physics for Everyone
Do you remember reading Asterix, and learning all that Ancient History without even knowing what you were learning?!
At least, that's how it worked for me !
In those youthful days, Cesar, Cleopatra, Vergincetorix, the roman conquests, the Nile, the Pyramids,... and everything else there, belonged to Asterix and nothing but Asterix !
It was just some years later, that I found out how much of ancient History, I was learning there! 😉
This is not History in Cartoons, but physics in adventures 😁
In this lil books (this is already the third one of its kind) we'll find simple informations of huge things like the Higgs Boson , the Large Hadron Collider , Dark matter, Wormholes, Time Travelling, the famous Zombie Schrödinger's cat ( he must be a zombie, since he can be both dead and alive😉 ), etc, etc... , immersed in good, entertainning stories !...
I can't picture an easier way to learn Physics, do you ?!!! 😁

Achiziționată ieri și citită deja astăzi, cu mențiunea că "nu mă pot opri, ce mă fac? O să citesc și la noapte!" Din când în când chicoteli și anunțul că al doilea mare calculator al lumii a fost deghizat într-un hamster! Cartea vine cu o mulțime de informații și planșe colorate, deci un posibil succes...

what better way for an adult to learn about science than reading a children's book? the story is interesting and the science inserts and photos included are definitely worth the reading alone. however some of the science are quite advanced even for an adult (at least it was for me). theoritical physics is really mind boggling. but then it's still engaging enough to make me want to read other books in the series

У третій частині дитячо-космічних пригод на нас чекають старі-знайомі друзі і багато нового. В Еріка — нова робота: він тепер керує Великим Адронним Колайдером у CERN. В Джорджа — нова школа і поповнення сімейства — сестрички-близнючки. А в Енні — теж нова школа (крута, приватна) і новий залицяльник (крутий і вродливий, син відомого режисера). Ну, ви зрозуміли, так? 😉 Без підліткового кохання-страждання уже не обійтися 🙂 Але — хоч очевидні натяки на любовний трикутник вимальовуються уже в перших розділах, пристрасті не розгоряться. Адже загроза, перед якою опиняться герої, набагато серйозніша і страшніша, ніж чиєсь розбите серце.
Старі знайомі лиходії теж з’являться на сторінках цієї книжки, але… Але все дуже переплутається. Ті, хто раніше вигадував найстрашніші підступи, тепер запропонують вчасну і доречну допомогу. А ті, про кого досі згадували як про мудрих і справедливих, раптом виявляться дріб’язковими, злими і готовими знищити усіх колег, аби посісти найвищий науковий п’єдестал — дарма що на шкоду науці.
Головний конфлікт пролягає між науковим прогресом і псевдонауковою дрімучістю, яка боїться нових відкриттів. Поки найкращі вчені з усього світу працюють у ВАКу над експериментом, яки дозволить перемотати час до Великого вибуху і дізнатися, як народився Всесвіт, організація «ТУПАК» (так-так, саме у таке миле слівце складається абревіатура цього таємного товариства) поширює плітки про те, що експеримент може призвести до нового Великого вибуху, який цього разу не створить, а знищить наш Всесвіт. До речі, якщо ви мінімально цікавитеся науковими трендами, то маєте пам’ятати, що в певний момент така істерія довкола ВАКу дійсно нагніталася. Але якщо в реалі все якось стихло і заспокоїлося, то у книжці дійшло аж до квантово-механічних бомб.
Воно, може, й не було б усе так складно, якби дітлахам допомагав Ерік. Або хоча б Космос, найрозумніший у світі супер-комп’ютер. Але Орден наукових досліджень запідозрив Еріка у, так би мовити, нецільовому використанні Космоса і забрав їх обох до ВАКу. Тому Енні і Джордж разом із Вінсентом мусять впоратися з усім самі. І поки перші двоє розгадують наукові загадки і шукають вихід зі свого становища з допомогою фізичних законів, то третій забезпечує їм підтримку прийомчиками карате там, де навіть фізика не дуже допомагає, — наприклад, коли треба вибратися з оберненої пастки Шредінгера.
Ця історія — найменш космічна і найбільш наукова з усіх трьох, які уже вийшли у Видавництві Старого Лева. Тут лише одного разу Ерік та Джордж роблять вилазку у відкритий космос — та й то недалечко, на Місяць. Зате занурюються усе глибше у нетрі квантової фізики. Тому і теоретична частина цієї книги значно складніша — ґлоони, кварки, бозон Ґіггза, теорія струн… Це вже вам не іграшки (окей, Джорджу — майже-іграшки, але мені — ні :).
Поза тим, що третя історія про Джорджа насичена новими науковими відомостями, пригод тут теж вистачає. І вони, як завжди, неймовірні.
А от чого мені не вистачило трішки, то це підліткової психології. Очевидно, що між Енні й Джорджем виникали якісь почуття. Але дівчинка, перейшовши до нової школи, захопилася крутішим, заможнішим і старшим Вінсентом. Аж так, що стала повністю ігнорувати свого друга-сусіда. Потім, щоправда, стає до нього приязнішою, але здається, що це пов’язано не так із поверненням почуттів, як із тим, що без допомоги Джорджа їй не обійтися у місії порятунку Еріка. Джордж же спершу страшенно ревнує і вороже ставиться до Вінсента. Але після того, як той допоміг врятувати їм життя, хлопець не може не почувати до нього вдячності. Чим же закінчаться/у що розвинуться ці стосунки? Сподіваюся, Люсі Гокінг (бо любовні переживанні дітлахів явно не в парафії Стівена), розрулює це у наступній книзі, і мені дуже цікаво, як. Тому — чекатиму.

Понякога попадам на нови детски книги, които направо ме карат да завиждам на днешните деца, да не говорим че и самият аз отново се превръщам в дете. Луси и Стивън Хокинг постигат именно този ефект със своите завладяващи астро авантюри, в които най-новите открития и теории за вселената и нейния произход са поднесени по невероятно увлекателен и съвършено разбираем начин! Ако някой се сеща за други детски книга, в която да се говори за Големия Андронен Колайдер, лунни роувъри и квантови бомби, то нека незабавно ми даде заглавия! До тогава ще считам поредицата за Джордж и компания за прецедент в съвременната детска литература! В „Джордж и Големият взрив” (изд. „Сиела”) любознателното хлапе и неговите верни приятели вече за трети път ме отвеждат на шеметно космическо приключения, в което на всяка крачка читателят научава нещо смайващо и интересно! خب از کتاب نباید انتظار یک رمان شسته رفته رو داشته باشیم ولی خوب بود و حال خوبی از خوندنش داشتم، از همین الانش دارم با سوالهای پسرم محاصره میشم و این طور کتابها با زبون ساده شون خیلی کمک میکنه

Yes, they have all the elements of good young adult fiction: an engaging young adult hero who is simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary, a cast of quirky supporting characters including a sufficiantly flawed villain and of course the messy haired but always good father figure that supports the protagonist. Taken for its story alone, these tales are rich enough to appeal to children of nearly all ages (and that's not a small claim). But there's more. As you might expect from a father and daughter team with the name of Hawking, there are some super powerful physics lessons embedded into both the plot, and as added nonfiction 'further' information through the story. It's written at a perfect pitch for children - neither too complex to understand, nor too 'dumbed down' to excite. Throughout each of the books, there's a palpable underlying sense of wonder in the point of discovery we're now at with physics, and children (adults too) will certainly feel that.
In this latest book, Eric and his daughter Annie have returned to England, in time for Annie (and George) to start secondary school. Eric has a job at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland where he's aiming to recreate the earliest seconds of the universe. It would be a dream job, but for the angry members of TOERAG ('Theory of Everything Resists Addition of Gravity') an anti-science group of protesters, who claim that the Collider will create a black hole and destroy the world. Sound familiar? The "false vacuum/true vacuum" dichotomy reminded me of the "strangelets" and "vacuum bubbles" that real-life protestors cited against the LHC work going on in CERN - equally wacky, unsubstantiated, and designed to work through fear. That the book is both topical and cutting edge in terms of the way it looks at very current science and scientific issues adds to its subtlety and power. Both Lucy and Stephen have great skill in making complex science simple to the layperson, even to children, and George and the Big Bang is no exception. The science is neatly embedded into the text, with George himself explaining some of the more complex subjects such as the indeterminate nature of observations in a quantum context:
Interestingly Stephen Hawking spent a fair amount of the early part of The Grand Design explaining this same point to a mostly adult readership, and I think it was only when I read George's succinct representation and then discussed it with my nine year old daughter, with whom I was reading George and the Big Bang, that I felt I truly understood it.
Interspersed between the narrative are a series of essays written by well-known scientists, including Stephen Hawking himself on the creation of the universe, Michael Turner on dark matter and dark energy, Paul Davies on the use of maths in understanding the universe and Kip Thorne on wormholes and time travel. Each of these essays are not only written in beautifully crisp, clear language, but are also absolutely up to the minute with the latest theories and ideas, and therefore rather exciting. They come into the story at exactly the point when George is dealing with these notions fictionally. In addition to the essays there are also shorter tidbits of information, as with all the George books, providing information on a whole range of topics, from the Theory of Everything to Andromeda, to singularities. There's even a chapter on M-Theory.
The book contains charming illustrations by Garry Parsons and three sections of colour plates which make this a rather attractive gift book and add to the appeal for children. A book like this could spark a love of science that might last a lifetime, but even at its base level, it's a great story. For those who are meeting George for the first time, the book is self-contained and provides enough background so that new readers won't be perplexed. For those already a fan of the George stories, this new book won't disappoint. Either way, it's a fun filled ride full of drama, action, and above all, discovery.

George and the Big Bang by Lucy and Stephen Hawking is an enthralling adventure that reveals even in the toughest times, one has to be careful and not make hasty decisions. I enjoyed reading this book because it tied real, intriguing facts/pictures about space into an imaginary, fun adventure. The plot captures the reader on the edge of their seat and makes them never want to stop reading. Even though the plot was fast-paced, the book included some important life themes. For example, the book mentions that scientists need to listen to the people who dislike science as well. From the book, “the planet belongs to all of us, and we need to be able to work together to make a difference.” This shows everyone’s perspective should be considered in major decisions. All in all, George and the Big Bang is a fantastic book that I recommend to readers of all ages.

This book is one of many fun ways to introduce about The Big Bang theory, how universe created. The readers wont be feel boring because it contains jokes and adventures. Do not worry because even this book is talking about quantum physic, there's some pages used as explanation (and ofc in an easy way with cute illustration!).

George's third adventure is good, informative with loads of science and astronomy knowledge. However, I don't think it's suitable for young children as the information about quantum physics, subatomic particles,.., and the LHC machine are too much for their brains.
The story is interesting and fun but it seems to be less exciting to me than the previous books . Maybe I'm too old, but at least I can understand the science.

Acestă serie este recomandată începând cu vârsta de 10 ani, dar faptul că Damian le cere să-i fie citite( am început volumul al patrulea), m-a făcut să constientizez cât de atractivă este, cât de ingenios a fost narată și cât de multe, foarte multe noțiuni științifice cuprinde, formulate pe înțelesul copiilor. Și să știți că îmi place și mie foarte mult, am aflat multe lucruri interesante despre Cosmos.
Acest volum a atins subiecte precum:

Partea întunecată a Universului
Despre cât de surprinzător de utila e matematica pentru a înțelege Universul
Găurile de vierme și călătoria în timp...și numai, sunt o parte acestora.
În acest volum, Eric este convocat în Elveția, deoarece călătoriile lui în spațiu au fost descoperite. Tot în acest volum, îl găsim pe profesorul lui Eric, pe mentorul lui, care din păcate are gânduri negre, acela de a arunca în aer Acceleratorul de Hadroni.
Dar bineînțeles că totul se termină cu bine, iar Cosmos rămâne alături de Eric.

Mình thấy mình đọc khá nhiều truyện thiếu nhi, có thể vì mình chưa hết chất thiếu nhi, và vì mình phải đọc được những gì bạn nhỏ ở nhà mình đọc.
Mình đã follow series truyện vũ trụ này từ tập đầu tiên khi học lớp 7, lúc đấy háo hức với kiến thức mới cực kì và nhất nhất bứng lên giờ Địa lý cho bạn bè lác mắt :)) Bây giờ khi lớn rồi mình lại mua cho em gái mình đọc, và đón nhận nó ở một góc độ khác, nên không chắc đây sẽ là một bình luận mà sự khen chê là chính xác.

Trừ kết thúc có phần hơi vội và hẫng thì đây đích thực là một món quà hấp dẫn cho các bạn nhỏ từ 8 - 15 tuổi đam mê khoa học không gian nè!
Mình đã follow series truyện vũ trụ này từ tập đầu tiên khi học lớp 7, lúc đấy háo hức với kiến thức mới cực kì và nhất nhất bứng lên giờ Địa lý cho bạn bè lác mắt :)) Bây giờ khi lớn rồi mình lại mua cho em gái mình đọc, và đón nhận nó ở một góc độ khác, nên không chắc đây sẽ là một bình luận mà sự khen chê là chính xác.

It started slow, but recovered in the 2nd half. Too many coincidences felt like too much for me, but the story become really interesting towards end, when following a logic course of actions lead to next actions. I rated it 5 stars, as for really enjoyed all science information in this 3rd book from the serie. Only in this one I understood better how the Universe is shaped and how the worm holes could actually work, ofcourse in theory for now. I was always thinking that the Universe as we know it, is the interior of the sphere and not the surface of it. What a beatiful field for research! Would have liked to start younger looking into it! I enjoy learning more and more about it, just like a 10 years young enthusiastic!

I thought this book was scientifically awesome because it is all about science stuff. The reading age would probably be 5th grade and up. George has a pig that his grandma got him for Christmas. George lost his pig and we don't know where the pig is!!! Stephen Hawking is one of the most smartest guy in the WORLD!!!! Want to see crazy stuff happen in this book? Read the book to find out!!!

Don’t care that this is for kids. I love this series. It’s physics and astronomy in a way anyone can understand, and the stories are just fun to read.

From the series that starts with George's Secret Key to the Universe; likewise almost entirely by Lucy Hawking, with a few inserted pieces on science by her father Stephen Hawking and various other well-known scientists. To be honest I wasn't all that impressed; George and friends are taken by convenient plot device to a number of educational settings to have adventures; Annie, the kick-ass heroine of the first book, gets rather sidelined here for other young male characters, and the means and motivation of the bad guys are not very clear or consistent. But the illustrations by Garry Parsons are jolly, and both books have a lot of beautiful astronomical photographs which are almost worth the price themselves.

The good: the plot was fairly interesting and most of the science inserts have been really well written for their target age group.
The not-so-good: some of the science inserts are aimed a bit high, and occasionally the book shoehorns an unnecessary science reference in with all the subtlety of a punch to the face. Example:
A scientist is talking to George about a group who are trying to disrupt the LHC experiments. He tells George: "They are the unseen, the dark force. They are all around us." to which George replies:
"I think that's dark matter you're thinking of. The invisible material that makes up twenty-three per cent of the known universe."
Yikes. Occasional stilted dialogue aside, it was pretty good.

Suitable for gr. 3-7. Older readers will be turned off by the simple plot and apparently young characters, although the science-minded might still enjoy the science sections. This is the third book in the series, but there was enough explanation that this volume can stand alone. Strong male protagonist - unfortunately the female character, while very intelligent, definitely plays second fiddle to George. The science fiction adventure story (evil anti-science types want to blow up the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland) alternates with factual explanations of the scientific terms and theories discussed, including age-appropriate essays by scientists including Hawking. Will appeal to elementary students who enjoy learning about science and astronomy.

My kids adore this series. I hope there are many more. A perfect combo of adventure and science, with characters who stick together, redefine what family means and hook kids on scientific ideas.

Właśnie skończyłam TOM III kosmicznych przygód George’a i Annie pt. „George i Wielki Wybuch”. Autorami tego cyklu są Lucy i Stephen Hawking (córka i jej genialny ojciec). Jest to naprawdę bardzo dobra książka, która miejmy nadzieję, że obudzi w młodych czytelnikach miłość do przedmiotów ścisłych, zwłaszcza do fizyki i matematyki. Tak jak pisałam w recenzjach poprzednich tomów, autorzy wpadli na świetny pomysł… choć z wykonaniem może nie jest już tak świetne, ale powiedzmy, że jest bardzo dobrze.
Dlaczego nie świetnie? Cóż, obawiam się, że niektóre sprawy, te wyjątkowo naukowe, będę dla dzieci zwyczajnie trudne. Jest na to sposób, mianowicie czytanie tej książki z rodzicami, którzy będą parę razy temat wyjaśniać – parę razy, to znaczy DO SKUTKU. Muszę też troszeczkę obciążyć fabułę, która bywa nudna… jej wiem, źle to brzmi, ale miałam takie poczucie, odkąd zaczęłam przygodę z Georgiem. Nie jestem pewna, czy dziecko na dłużej utrzyma uwagę na tej historii. A to wilka szkoda, bo przecież Wszechświat jest KOSMICZNIE interesujący. Mimo to, oczywiście ogromnie wam polecam wszystkie tomy.
„George i Wielki Wybuch” jest pozycją wspaniale wydaną, elegancko, z dbałością o kolory, ilustracje i fotografie. Tutaj nie można się do niczego przyczepić. Oprawa graficzna z najwyższej półki, więc będzie to CUDOWNY prezent dla malca. W tej części autorzy poruszają bardzo ciekawe tematy, tłumaczę nam, czym jest osobliwość, M-teoria, TUNELE CZASOPRZESTRZENNE!, ciemna materia, czy (chyba moje ulubione zagadnienie) KOT SCHRODINGERA (pułapka Schrodingera) – koniecznie zapoznajcie się z tym terminem! KONIECZNIE!
Muszę jednak wam jeszcze trochę ponarzekać, bo do nieszczęsnej odczuwalne nudy, trudności ze zrozumieniem, zbyt skomplikowanych treści dorzucę ekomyśl, która w tym tomie przybrała szatę mocno ideologiczną. Mamy więc tu do czynienia nie z nauką, ale z próbą forsowania swoich poglądów. Złole w tej książce sią tak przejaskrawieni, tak POTWIRNIE POTWRNI, że zwyczajnie niewiarygodni… ( a jeśli chodzi o to, czy naukowców powinno się kontrolować, to moja odpowiedź brzmi TAK, bo można wskazać wiele przypadków, gdy naukowiec działał na szkodę nie tylko ludzkości, ale i świata, niezgodnie z jakąkolwiek etyką)... No cóż, nie można mieć wszystkiego.
Podkreślam jednak, że jest to cykl wartościowy, który dziecko powinno poznawać z rodzicami, a wracać do niego samodzielnie. Dumnie wyglądające, prezentujące prawdziwą kopalnię naukowych skarbów książki! Warto, ale z rozumem, własnym zdaniem, właściwym podejściem i sercem kochającego rodzica, który pokaże dziecku nieznany świat i wykorzysta George’a jako narzędzie służące wzbudzeniu w malcu miłości do nauki i otaczającego nas świata.
7/10 bardzo dobra

Chú heo Freddy của George ngày càng lớn, ba mẹ cậu bé vốn đã không thích Freddy nên việc này khiến họ quyết định đưa nó đến trang trại để vườn sau nhà trống trải hơn. George rất buồn khi xa Freddy, vì vậy, thông qua sự giúp đỡ của Annie với Cosmos, cậu bé muốn tìm một nơi ở vũ trụ (hay Trái Đất) mà Freddy có thể sống thoải mái mà không bị làm phiền. Hai đứa trẻ quyết định đưa Freddy xuống tầng hầm khoa Toán ở đại học nơi chú Eric đang nghiên cứu ở tạm một thời gian trước khi tìm được nơi khác thích hợp hơn. Nhưng tại đây, bọn chúng tìm cờ nghe được cuộc trò chuyện của một nhóm người mặc đồ đen, hành tung rất mờ ám mà sau này bọn chúng biết được đó chính là nhóm Giẻ Chùi Chân. Bọn họ quyết tâm phá hoại công trình của chú Eric tìm hiểu về khởi đầu của vũ trụ bằng những âm mưu rất hiểm độc. George và Annie phải tìm ra phương hướng để đối phó với bọn họ, nhằm bảo vệ công trình của chú Eric, với mong muốn mọi người đều biết đến công trình này để hiểu rõ hơn về vũ trụ, về Trái Đất nơi chúng ta đang sinh sống.
So với tập 1 là Chìa khóa vũ trụ của George thì tập 3 này nội dung nặng nề và u ám hơn hẳn, tất nhiên với độ tuổi của mình thì đọc không có vấn đề gì, nhưng đây là sách dành cho thiếu nhi, nên nội dung thế này thì hơi nặng đô. Thêm nữa, sự nặng đô còn đến từ khối lượng kiến thức trong cuốn này, với mình thì kiến thức trong tập 3 này nhiều và khó cảm nhận hơn tập 1, nhiều đoạn mình đọc nhưng không hiểu, vậy nên mình không nghĩ là các em nhỏ khi đọc sẽ hiểu được nó. Tuy nhiên, khâu biên tập của Nhã Nam cho cuốn này lại khá tốt, chỉ có hai lỗi chính tả. Sau khi đọc xong cuốn này, trong tương lai mình phải cân nhắc thật kĩ khi mua hai cuốn rất nổi tiếng của tác giả Stephen Hawking là Lược sử thời gian và Vũ trụ trong vỏ hạt dẻ, vì nếu hai cuốn đó viết theo lối hàn lâm và tầm kiến thức cao hơn những series về George do Nhã Nam xuất bản thì mình không muốn rơi vào tình trạng đọc như vịt nghe sấm, đọc xong mà chỉ hiểu được chút ít, hiểu mài mại, mình sẽ chỉ đọc khi mình chuẩn bị sẵn sàng tất cả những kiến thức cần thiết để tìm hiểu về nó.

George and the Big Bang was actually a really boring book. With the addition of Mr. Vincent-the-big-shot-son-of-a-movie-producer it got a little awkward with the whole love triangle mess again. Can’t authors write a book series without adding a love triangle in for the main character or one of the main characters best friends? I mean, seriously? Also the book titles are a bit pathetic. George and the Big Bang! George and the Cosmic Treasure Hunt! George’s Secret Key to the Universe! George, George, George, George. It’s always about George. Pretty sad. I think that the scientific blurbs would be appreciated more if the weren’t stuck randomly in the middle of sentences. ‘George, could you give the rover a push from behind while I drive it’ Suddenly, a picture of our ‘beautiful’ Earth with our one moon. Honestly, how hard would it be to put the blurbs and picture files at the end of chapters? I’m sure a lot of readers would enjoy that. And could you stop throwing in random pictures? Like I know it’s already published and all that but if I could change the book I would. Maybe I’m not an author and I shouldn’t be allowed to say anything right? Actually that’s left. I’m a write myself and when reading a book I do not like it when the plot is interrupted by picture files.
