This book is a textbook for a course in 19th century Russian poetry for non-Russian students. It includes the best verse of Russian poets from Zhukovsky to Nekrasov. The text opens with a brief survey of the development of Russian poetry during this period. Each poet is introduced with a brief biographical note. Difficult and rare words are glossed in the margins of the poems, accentuation is marked, and lines are numbered. The appendix contains a concise dictionary of literary terms and a glossary of the most difficult words in the Russian poetic vocabulary. The editor, E. Draitser, teaches Russian Language and Literature at Hunter College (CUNY, New York, NY).
