Brilliant

I have read all of the nightingale books and enjoyed them all. I do wish they were still set in England and miss the character of jenny but I am looking forward to the next book.

Jack is back in the sixth book in the Nightingale series.

Ideally it would be better to have read other books in the series so you can fully enjoy this book. The main reason is there are a few characters that have been with Jack for some if not all of the series and the background to these characters is something you do not want to miss out on.

Stephen Leather has written yet another brilliantly thrilling novel full of demons and devils galore.

One person I do miss from the earlier books is Jenny, Jacks assistant and I wish Stephen could find a way to bring her back as, as much as I enjoy these books there has been a sense of something missing. In this book though there is a new strong female role, Perez. Maybe this is a lady that will be making more appearances and will fill the female void that I have missed.

Fans of the Nightingale series certainly will not be disappointed with the latest in the series. Jack is his usual superstitious self, he seems to be even more wittier than usual also. I loved how many times the americans mistook him for being an australian and you could feel his patience running out. New York Night is certainly a dark and chilling read that seems to have more blood and gore than usual and it certainly made for a chilling read that does not disappoint.

As soon as I pick up one of this authors books I know I am in for a fast paced read that will have me hooked from beginning to end. The Jack Nightingale series is great for fans who like crime books mixed with the super natural.

A bit rushed at the end and felt quite short like there could have been more added to it in terms of the three devils Adventures and also gone into more detail about how it had happened before... Having said that I did really like it and it was a page turner.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

Jack Nightingale is called in to investigate murders that bear sigils, marks of demons as individual as snowflakes. He finds himself chasing 3 teenagers across New York, and calls on help that he would rather not need.

This is book 7 of the Jack Nightingale series, I have not read any others.

There is an under story running through this, one involving a couple of the characters here, and I missed all that for not reading the other books. BUT while some of the undertones of the book escaped me, I really did enjoy this!

The demons are calling on children who are playing a game called Charlie Charlie (no idea if this is a real game, but sounds dangerous!) and who are then upgrading to Ouija boards. THESE are deadly, and cost 6 teenagers their lives, along with a many others who the demons have "fun" with.

Its quite graphic in its violence, and we do get some of the demons as well as Jack and ya'll know how much I love that!

My other point, besides the under story running from other books, was how it ended. It just did. Like, stopped. Dead. Weird, I thought.

Still, a good read, a different to the usual paranormal stuff and I will look to read other books by Leather at a later date.

A bloody good read! Literally.

Fastest that I have read 7 books ever. All within about 10 days. This is an Occult mystery series. No Urban Fantasy here which is my usual preference. There is lots of gore and violence, yet not gratuitous at all. The pace never flags and the protagonist grows on you after initially seeming something of a callous sort. His heart is in the right place but he tends to be a loner- and this adds to the grim plot lines. I cannot wait for the next book and I must say that this British author has become a new favorite, reminding me fondly of my homeland.

Huge fan

I have waited with great anticipation for the next book in this series. I was not disappointed.Best one yet in my opinion. .The books don't necessarily need to be read in order except in order to understand the nuances you must read the original first as it sets the stage for the rest of the books as well as any of the short stories in the Jactk Nightingale books. If you have an interested in white\black magic, the supernatural or good and evill this series covers it all. You won the disappointed.

A further disappointing story, following San Francisco Night, involving one of my favourite characters. Stephen Leather makes writing seem effortless at times, but on this occasion it felt like writing by numbers. Yes we know Jack likes to smoke, yes we know he doesn't like lifts/elevators, yes we know he has his 'English' humour...

I really hope the series returns to form in the next book.

Been a while since I have read a Jack Nightingale story and this has made me appreciate how much I have missed his exploits. Never a dull moment as Jack is asked to investigate murders in and around greater New York. My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough. On the plus side I already have the next ready to start reading and the two short story collections.

2.5 stars rounded up due to author loyalty. Not the best of the series. more like I got an idea. lets try it out in a minimalist way, baddies dead, book over. A couple of plot points at the end just didn't make sense to me, especially to an intelligent detective who has seen all the evidence .....

This book is really great - up until the last 20 pages, then it just seemed rushed. I was fully expecting this one to end on a cliffhanger, but instead the author had Jack resolve the last 270 pages within 3 pages of text- and the font in these books is not small.

Such a shame as this has been such a great series up until now. I really hope the next instalment is better.

Oh and there are a bunch of errors from pages 92-100. A couple of errors throughout a whole book and I just think meh, these things happen but there were several errors across 8 pages, and no others on either side. There was a ‘her’ where there should’ve been a ‘his’. Someone who had just brought a croissant then took a bite from their sandwich, and someone else who was inside the apartment for 10 minutes, but a few pages later they were inside for 15 minutes.

Think the proofreader must’ve skipped a few pages…

New York Night (Jack Nightingale, #7) by Stephen Leather
Jack moves from San Francisco to New York as he continues to rebuild his life after the events of the first 5 books.
It is an ok read but I do miss the old Nightingale his beat up MG and the location of London and his sidekick Jenny.
I just feel the magic of the first 5 books has been lost and now we just get violence and weak plot to accommodate said violence.
Nightingale is still fun to spend time with and I still enjoy the supernatural elements of the story for me they are now just lacking something.

Overall it's an ok read.

Jack vs The Devils

Jack is fighting the occult in New York. Jack gets involved in 3 murders that have initially only butchery in common. He finds out that devil's are getting loose on earth by deceiving teenagers with grief. Nightingale is saving the day and trying not to lose his life. There is great character development. The horror element is stronger. The action is at a good pace. New questions are raised. The book is a page Turner. I would highly recommend it. I look forward to the next novel.

Getting better

The early books in the series were a bit slow but picked up, but since book 5 they get better a very quick read as you get into them and the main lead Jack Nightingale has developed into a really good character

A good read, but Jack needs to get out of the USA and back to either UK or Europe, where true Folk Lore is. There must be a good story in the Deamons who now hate hate, and the Human groups he has foiled to pull this together. Maybe look at some ancient roots of the original guys that sold his soul and were abusing Jenny!
