Their first mistake? Kidnapping her lover. Their second? Thinking she wouldn't do something about it.
The black-ops government agency known as Sigma has shattered the resistance, destroyed its infrastructure, and taken its best operative captive. It's about as bad as it can get, but Sigma's forgotten one thing: Rowan Price.
Rowan is no longer a civilian in the shadow war. Her talents are fully trained, and she's become something she never dreamed of-a cool, clinical, lethal psionic operative. Working as Henderson's second-in-command, she's utterly focused on two things: repairing the Society's infrastructure and rescuing Justin Delgado. Yet under her shell of calm and gentleness, her rage is simmering . . . and it's about to break loose.
Delgado knows he can't remember something important. He puts up with Sigma's beatings and questioning, the pain and the torture. Sigma keeps asking him the same question-where is Rowan Price? He doesn't know who this woman is or where she is, but if he can escape Sigma one more time, he's damn sure going to find out. Because Price, whoever she is, holds the key to his fractured memories and destroyed soul.
But first, he has to get out. Then he'll find Rowan Price.
Unfortunately, that may be the one thing Sigma's counting on.
Lilith Saintcrow was born in New Mexico, bounced around the world as a child, and fell in love with writing stories when she was ten years old. She and her library co-habitate in Vancouver, Washington.
My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!! ***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book!
The cover is very nice with that washboard!
This is the 2nd book in the series, and it is for adults only due to the violence. This is my first time reading Lilith’s work, and I definitely liked it! I haven’t read book 1 yet, but I had no trouble with picking up this book and understanding what was going on.
This is definitely an interesting world! Some people are gifted with psychic abilities, and a government agency is using and enslaving those with abilities through nefarious means. Whenever you have people being exploited, there are people who rise up to fight for those who are being exploited. Rowan is part of the group fighting the good fight. I really like her because she has inner strength that is amazing considering all of the things that have happened to her. Justin or Del is amazing, and he doesn’t even realize it. Together they make a great pair, but they bad guys are trying to get them both! This is an action packed adventure!
I recommend this book to all readers who believe in psychic powers and fighting for what you believe in because it is an awesome adventure! Can’t wait to check out more of Lilith’s work in the future!
I drove 10 miles to a friend's house to get this book, which she was smart enough to purchase used for a nickel. Worth the drive? Oh yes. This was a great finish to the story we began in The Society.
The whole thing feels familiar, but it's not possible for me to have read this story previously. So I'm not sure what exactly it feels familiar to, you know?
It was corny and cheesy and Delgado gets all mushy and starry eyed around Rowan, who is a totally endearing idiot sometimes. It was so entertaining!
Anyway, I still loved it. I got so absorbed in the story that I left my daughter to chill on her playmat alone for a little too long and found her licking the dog to stave off boredom. Now that's a recommendation if I've ever heard one.
Thank the heavens this has a happy ending of sorts. Sheesh. Rowan and Justin are back ... So much ground to cover in this. Kind of touches on the person you might become when you have to do hard things. And how hard it is to believe that you can be loved.
When I finished the first book, I really wanted to jump right into this one. But at $7 for 200 pages there was no way that was gonna happen. Fortunately, I saw it on sale for a more reasonable price and was all over that. So it's kind of sad how, with how much I liked the first, how disappointed I was with this one. I can't even really say why. There was still a lot going on and plenty of action but there was just something missing. There were also so many things that kept being repeated that it was like, 'yes I've read this already', and that got kind of annoying. I did really enjoy their internal monologues most of the time though. The characters were still believable and the world building great, but I just did not get into it as much. Which is kind of odd considering how fast time went by while I was reading.
As we know, Del got captured by Sigma at the end of the last book and pushed himself to forget everything he knows of Rowan. It's more torture and beatings in store for him now especially when he can't give them the answers they want. Not that he would even if he could remember. Sigma wants Rowan bad and as she keeps evading them, Del respects her more and more. The only thing that has kept him sane thru it all was this sun-filled room full of plants and a women's scent in his mind that would pull him in and give him peace.
As for Rowan, she has changed a lot since we first met her. It has been months since Del was taken and she just knows he's still alive. But everyone in the Society refuses to let her go search for him. Somehow she has pretty much taken over Del's place as second in command and a lot of things end up relying on her. I was very surprised at this, for many reasons, but mostly because she had very little experience with such things. And now she's like this total bad-ass that can lead well and fight even better? I'm not sure how much I believed this change in her in such a short period of time. But she did have her determination to rescue Del driving her hard, so who knows.
The Society and Sigma keep fighting over targets and during one such incident Del finally lays eyes on the woman they've been hunting. And something inside him will not let her be hurt or caught and he finds himself unable to stop himself from helping her to get away. After that mess, Del sees his chance for escape. Del takes a big risk when he decides to push himself again to remember what he forced himself to forget, but thankfully it works. When Sigma sends their best and terribly cruel tracker to find Rowan, he knows he has to find her first. And he does. When she's on a run in Vegas trying to get more funding for the Society and it all goes to hell. Thankfully Del was there to help though.
I was thrilled that it didn't take very long for Del and Rowan to be reunited. It was frustrating, though, how the two of them acted toward each other at that point because they were making assumptions and neither would talk. Why don't people ever just freakin' talk in books!? So many things can be cleared up so much quicker if they would just TALK. Ugh.
From there things get worse when that tracker sent by Sigma found them and practically raped Rowan's mind. But he did more than just that before Del could stop him. And when the two of them get back to the new Society headquarters Rowan is about to do something so stupid. I can't really blame all of it on her, she really couldn't help herself after all, but at the same time it might have been able to be caught if she had told Del what she was feeling going on in her brain. Oh wow, there's that talking thing again.
For as much as I liked the ending when they go to rescue Rowan, I have such a hard time believing it. It was just way too easy. Way too easy. Especially when you consider that this was supposed to be one of the toughest and worst installations Sigma has. And while the very end was probably a good way to end this little series, it too was not quite believable.
But overall, I still liked it. And I still love Del, which is good enough for me.
She said it all: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... I don't agree on everything she has written (personally I wasn't disappointed), but her words are still spot on.
The book feels to have a balance of romance and action. There is more story with Rowan and Sigma and Delgado and Sigma, as we get Rowan and Delgado. The story comes to an end, but there is an opening to continue with these characters. I'd be curious to see more with them.
****FULL REVIEW**** *I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
It's been three months since Delgado was taken. Rowan and the Society have been on the move, staying a hairs breath reach away from Sigma's fingers. Delgado did something to his mind, and he can't remember. He does know that Sigma has been drugging and beating him, asking where some girl named Rowan Price is. They want this girl. Bad. He doesn't know who she is, but if she's staying ahead of Sigma then he potentially trained her, and maybe she could help him.
Rayna is back for book two! Yes! I thought her voice fit Rowan perfectly in the first book as it fits the descriptions given of Rowan's voice. Rayna carries Rowan's emotions so well in her voice. Along with Delgado when we are in his head. There are moments that are italicized in the book to represent thoughts, which can be hard to relate vocally so the listener doesn't think the character is talking. Doing it with a slightly lower volume or whisper helps us differentiate these moments. I'm amazed at the talent Rayna has in jumping from Rowan's emotions to Delgado's emotions. They are both on a different feel, and it's portrayed in the quick scenes with grace from Rowan.
I was waiting for this audio book. I wanted to know how things would go after the ending of the first book.
Where Delgado kept his ability hidden and reserved in book one, we see him in action here. He's a killing machine when Sigma needs him to be. Or when he wants to be. We also get to see Rowan starting to understand her powers. She does more with them now, knowingly.
Rowan has grown stronger. In her ability and in character. She was weaker in the first book and still looks for her rock and love, Delgado, but she can function on her own. As a matter of fact, she can help run the team. She doesn't realize she's stepped into the position Delgado held, and she's doing an amazing job at it. Rowan is a complicated character. At times she seems like she should be weak and dependent, but she's not. There is so much more to her that makes her stronger and caring.
Delgado trained her to fight, in case this happened. In case he was taken and turned against her. He pushed Rowan past her limits when they were last together in the training room, but he knew he had to in order to keep her safe. Delgado's worst fears came true, and now Rowan is strong enough to survive against him. But she's more than that. She means the world to Delgado and he will find his way back to her.
What Delgado had to do to himself to protect Rowan from being found has lingering flickers for Delgado. Things are a tad rocky with him and Rowan as they find each other again. We see Rowan and Delgado as they are attracted to each other, but they are afraid of how things have changed. The story is more romance of how they find their way back to each other than what happens in bed, although that is present as well. This is more of the growing love they have.
The book feels to have a balance of romance and action. There is more story with Rowan and Sigma and Delgado and Sigma, as we get POV's from Rowan and Delgado. The story comes to an end, but there is an opening to possibly continue with these characters. I'd be up for it if it happens, but I'm happy with the way this ended as well.

An Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book was received free via Netgalley for an honest review.
Hunter, Healer is the second - and currently, last - book in the Society series. Reading book 1, The Society is a must for understanding the plot and characters though. The series is more of a paranormal thriller with a side of romance than a romance with a thriller plot.
But, it is emotionally gripping, I suspect at least partly because Del (Justin/Delgado) is exactly my kind of catnip. I read the books back to back, so my thoughts about Hunter, Healer are heavily influenced by my thoughts about The Society, and Del is about as broken as you can get. He's been tortured, forcibly addicted, forced into a slavery where he was also forced to kill to survive. He's not exactly in the best of headspaces, even now out of that slavery and living a life saving others from it.
And enter Rowan, who he is made to pair up with. Or rather, he's desperate to pair up with her and told to at the same time. But, at the end of The Society, Del is right back where he started: trapped in slavery. And Rowan is left behind, hating the government agency doing this and desperate to save Del.
If The Society was more Del's book, then Hunter, Healer is more Rowan's book. And Rowan is... something of a Mary Sue character. In the world of psions, she's pretty hefty weight. She's off the charts powerful (but was never found by the baddies). Unlike most psions, she is also capable of several things. She can heal bodies, and mostly heal minds. She has some small pre-cognition abilities. She's a strong and projective empath. She can negate or heal addiction. But best of all, she and Del can merge minds without pain; that's a big deal because he can enter minds but it always hurts him and the other person. She is also the glue that holds everything else together.
That's not to say that I didn't like Rowan. Despite the Mary Sue aspects, I liked her. She's gentle and vulnerable. She's mad and kick ass. She works hard and thinks of others. She loves Del and she is determined to save him.
The action is pretty much non-stop but seeing it through the eyes of both Del and Rowan and seeing how they feel makes it feel a little less break-neck. I really enjoyed the wild ride. I'm just sorry the story seems to be over. I'd love to see more books set in this universe.
This is the second book in this series and whilst it can be read as a standalone I recommend reading book one first as it sets the scene .
Sigma , the black-ops government agency has dealt a massive blow to the Resistance ....... they are scrambling to consolidate their resources and personnel ............one of their own is missing , presumed captured . Rowan's talents are now fully trained, and she is become something she never dreamed of a cool, clinical, lethal psionic operative.... BUT she feels that a part of herself is missing , she is losing her focus . Delgado , held captive by Sigma , is being constantly beaten and tortured - reintroduced to Yed , a drug that is highly addictive ...... they keep asking 'WHERE IS ROWAN PRICE' , he does not know what they are talking about . All he knows is that he must escape and try to find this Rowan Price and warn her about Sigma . To help re-finance the Resistances infrastructure she reluctantly agrees to go to Las Vegas and play the tables , but finds that Sigma is on her trail - Delgado is one of her trackers !!. On seeing her and hearing her voice he realises that he has built a wall in his mind to hide all information about Rowan and the Resistance = he breaks free of his constraints and helps Rowan escape the trap . Sigma are determined to capture them and wipe out the Resistance once and for all - so set a notorious tracker and his minder on their trail . The resistance must use all their skills and ingenuity to evade them and decide that NOW is the time to take the fight to Sigma , rather than fight a rear-guard defense .
A well written paranormal thriller , the fast paced plot twist and turns with unpredictable results .
I was given an arc of this book by the Publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review .
"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." Questions of attribution for that quotation aside, the fact remains that there are those who envy a free society and believe it to be easy to acquire its benefits through force and power. The fear of the secret society, the underground government, the spies remains real--is it paranoia if someone is actually chasing you? And of course all of this plays nicely into the hands of author Lilith Saintcrow who has created a black ops super-secret government agency which wishes to control all who exhibit psionic capabilities.
This is the second of two books in this series and obviously Book 1 is going to give you all sorts of depth of background you wouldn't have otherwise. But jumping into Book 2 I had no trouble picking up the narrative and understanding what was going on. I had the opportunity to enjoy the audiobook as capably narrated by Rayna Cole who adeptly handled a large number of voices of extreme distinction, especially some of the villains. One always wants satisfyingly nasty villains, doesn't one? This would probably make a great action movie.
This is the second book in a series, and it's pretty solid. There is a little more romance than I generally like in my books, but I knew that going in. There are a few moments that weren't realistic, but it is a fantasy book, so I can't judge too harshly. The narrator did a solid job with the voices and pacing. The story moved along pretty quickly, and there was some good character development. Overall, this is a solid and entertaining audiobook.
I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left my honest review. The free copy did not influence my review in any way.
Bought this because I was caught off guard by the ending of book one, and had to see how that was resolved. Should have saved my money. I found book two to be super repetitive, and did a lot of skimming. The end seemed a bit unbelievable, in a "That was all it took? After all that buildup?" sort of way. These books are like X-men-lite, which sounds like it would be fun and interesting, but book two is somehow neither. Everything about this story was a grind, both what the characters go through, and reading about them going through it. IF the series continues, I most likely won't go along for the ride.
This is the second book in this series and was as good as the first one. It is just as suspenseful and fast moving as the first book. Rowen is fully trained and looking for revenge, along the way to finds Delgado again. I'm hoping this isn't the last book in the series.
I read many a five book series of Ms. Saintcrow, but most of not all, started after these were done. Perhaps it was such a desire to find more that had me seeking The Society and it's sequel, Hunter, Healer. She certainly ends it with a bit wait there's more but like that black bird said, Nevermore.
I checked Hunter, Healer, book 2 of the Society series, out from my local library. Very good plot, and I grew to like the characters more than in the first book. I would love to see a full series, because of the potential in the ending. Love this author, and she didn't disappoint with this read.
My review is based on the Audiobook. Hunter, Healer continues where book 1 ended. Rowan and Delgado's journey to take down Sigma keeps the reader/listener captivated from start to finish. The narrator does a fabulous job at bringing the characters and story to life.
This book didn’t live up to its potential. It was entertaining the way Law & Order reruns are entertaining. Of course, it’s been more than a decade since this was written, so I would try this author again.
This was fast paced, furious, and addictive. I could not put this down and kept picking it up when I tried to take a break. Well written action scenes that played like a top notch movie in my imagination.
I really like this book! (looove it) I mean the love was hot and deep, the bad boys were a bit psycho and the friends were loyal :3
What I thought was a bit difficult was that you never got to breathe, and that was a constant pace. But it was one of the things that were good with it too. > _ <
What I like about the main characters, Rowan and Justin (Delgado), was how well they suit each other. the bad thing about them was how self-hating and depressed they could be sometimes.
I love how she writes another creative book where you can see both their side of the story, to know both their sorrow, joy and fear.
Love her Strange Angels novels and this was not a series that made me think less of her as a writer, but on the contrary, like her even more. Can not wait and see what else she has to give <3
The sequel to The Society picks up three months later. Sigma is still a major threat to those with psychic abilities and they are determined to get Rowan at all costs. It is impossible to say anything more about the plot and characters without risk of spoilers to the first book. In this installment we see a harder Rowan. She has been through a lot and isn't the mouse she once was. She's had to adjust to her new life, constantly on the run, constantly fighting to save the lives of others like her. Her team with the Society is her family. Justin is fighting his own demons as well as the enemy while trying to hold onto Rowan. Hunter, Healer is just as intense as The Society, and just as hard to put down. I am kind of sad there are no more books to come. I think it would be interesting to explore some of the other more minor characters like Yoshi and Cath.
The joy of reading an author's backlist is that if I hit a series which is one long story divided into parts (not a complaint, this is a perfectly legit type of series) I can go straight on to the next book, which is what I did here. Good pacing and action scenes and a romance I was invested in. Finished in one go.
I've really tried to like Saintcrow's books, but I don't. The premise of her books are great, she just doesn't execute them to my liking. The Society series is better than Dante Valentine, but that's not saying much. Will not be rereading.
