In a desperate attempt to escape destruction decades earlier, humankind was forced underground, into the depths of the earth, creating a new society called the Tri-Realms.
After her parents and sister are abducted by the Enforcers, seventeen-year-old Adele, a member of the middle-class moon dwellers, is unjustly sentenced to life in prison for her parents' crimes of treason. Against all odds, Adele must escape from the Pen and find her family, while being hunted by a deranged, killing machine named Rivet, who works for the President. She is helped by two other inmates, Tawni and Cole, each of whom have dark secrets that are better left undiscovered. Other than her friends, the only thing she has going for her is a wicked roundhouse kick and two fists that have been well-trained for combat by her father.
At the other end of the social spectrum is Tristan, the son of the President and a sun dweller. His mother is gone. He hates his father. Backed by only his servant and best friend, Roc, he leaves his lavish lifestyle in the Sun Realm, seeking to make something good out of his troubled life. When a war breaks out within the Tri-Realms, Tristan is thrust into the middle of a conflict that seems to mysteriously follow Adele as she seeks to find her family and uncover her parents true past.

THIS is the series to read if you are a fan of The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Testing, Legend, Blood Red Road, and just about any other good YA dystopian out there. This series is one of the best dystopians I've ever read. It has great characters, amazing world building, and thrilling action sequences. Any lover of dystopia will love this!
Its also been featured on Buzzfeed and Bookbub as a series to read if you loved The Hunger Games. If you haven't read it, you are missing out!
Breaking it down by book: The Moon Dwellers YA Dystopians have become my favorite genre over the past year. There really aren't too many I haven't read yet, although there are a few. I'm not sure why I didn't read this one sooner, I am kind of kicking myself right now! This was a thrilling, couldn't-put-it-down kind of read!
The story is a dual POV between Adele and Tristan. Adele is in prison through no crimes of her own. The society is set up like a caste system, and Adele's class, The Moon Dwellers, is considered middle class. Although now she has no rights at all, and is in prison for life. Tristan is royalty, and at the other end of the spectrum. He belongs to the Sun Dwellers, the richest souls in their society. The Sun Dwellers control everything, and take away more and more from the Moon Dwellers and the Star Dwellers (lowest class) every year. The castes are even separated geographically. Everything is underground, after a global destructive event up above the earth.
The story starts off where Tristan is in a parade of some sorts in the Moon Dwellers districts. Adele sees him from the prison yard, and he, her. The both experience an extreme sort of head pain when they lock eyes. Tristan decides he must go back and find out about this girl. He basically runs away to go find her, against his father's wishes. So he sets off with his best friend and servant, Roc.
Adele, meanwhile, has befriended 2 prisoners by the names of Cole and Tawni, and they make a prison break. At the same time they are escaping, the Star Dwellers, who are upset with their lot in life, has declared war on the Moon Dwellers, and is bombing the heck out of their districts. Its utter chaos as Adele runs to try to rescue the rest of her family, and Tristan is chasing after her.
Adele is an awesome, kick butt kind of girl, and I absolutely adored her! Tristan was no weakling, either, as he was trained in sword fighting since he was little. He and Roc have an interesting time of things, though, as they don't have much common sense in the Moon Dwellers districts! They get themselves in more trouble than Adele does! I loved the friendship and brotherhood of Roc and Tristan, and I thought their moments were some of the brightest and funniest!
The bulk of the story was really about these specific groups of people, but towards the end we start to see the bigger picture of this dystopian society, and its impending doom. The ending set things up nicely for the next book, The Star Dwellers!
The Star Dwellers I'm a huge David Estes fan, so this may be biased...but I LOVED this book! This is the second book in the Dwellers series, a dystopian series where humanity has retreated underground for survival. We left off in Moon Dwellers with the Star Dwellers invading and bombing the Moon Dwellers, Adele heading off to try and rescue her mom, and Tristan teaming up with Adele's dad, Ben, to try and unite the Moon and Star Dwellers against their common enemy, Tristan's dad.
Things pick up right where we left off, with everyone still running and trying to survive. Now everyone has a purpose, which makes things all the more fun! The world building continues to amaze me. Everything is so descriptive. Its almost like watching a movie in my head!
I never knew what was going to happen next. Between things like "Bat Flu" (Yuck!)and trains running behind hidden caves, there was always something new coming at us. There were also a couple of surprising twists that I didn't see coming, and it makes me wonder what else the author has in store for us later!
The highlight of the book for me was Tristan and Roc's "Bromance." I just love the banter between these two, and it really helps lighten things up sometimes. I got to know Roc a lot better in this story, and I can't wait to see him become more of a hero. Adele and Tristan also had some more time together towards the end, which was great. I love the two of them together!
Adele also learns a lot about her own family, and their part in the Resistance. Her dad, Ben, is just an amazing man. He and Tristan spend a lot of time together in the beginning of the story, and Tristan sees in him the father he never had. Its amazing how much the theme of family is carried throughout the book, and I loved it!
You might be tired of hearing me say that, but I honestly can't think of anything in this story I didn't like. This is an amazing thing, because usually the second books in a series are my least favorite of the series. This girl can't wait to see what happens next in Sun Dwellers!
The Sun Dwellers The Sun Dwellers is a major roller coaster ride of shivers, tears, and emotions! I was so ready for this ride, even though I had no idea where it would take me! It took me up, down, and even upside down sometimes, making my stomach drop. And after it was all over, I wanted to ride it all over again! Good news for me, there are more books!
This book is the final efforts of Adele, Tristan, and their friends to assassinate the President. They know this won't be easy, and they may die in the attempt. But they also know it must be done for any chance of peace to exist in the Realms.
Helping them on this final journey is Roc, Tristan's best friend; Tawni, Adele's best friend; and Trevor, who is part of the rebel army, and a good friend of Adele's mom. They all have something to lose. For Adele, its her only chance for freedom, for herself, her mother and her sister. The theme of family lives on in this book! Tristan also wants to be free from his father's sadistic ways and help his fellow citizens. Roc is mainly there for Tristan, but he also has something to prove--exacting revenge for his mother. Tawni has lost just about everything dear to her, and also wants her freedom. Trevor is all about equality, and maybe seeing the President's head on a stick.
So we go on another journey, this time into the lion's den. Even though there is almost constant action going on, we still get lots of little moments between characters, which is what really makes the story for me. Adele is very conflicted through the first half of the book, which brings us back to the beginning--why are Adele and Tristan so drawn to each other?
In the previous books, we got a little comic relief from Roc and Tristan's friendship. In this story, though, Roc and Adele bond a little bit, and Trevor kind of takes over on the comic front. This one doesn't have as many laughs--these kids are in a dire situation, after all!
The ending was the most gripping and nail-biting part of this ride. There were some very scary moments, and of course, lots of dark moments. But in the end, I was more than satisfied with the conclusion to this trilogy.
To wrap it all up, this book is crazy good! The characters, the setting, the plot, and all the details were excellent! Everything made complete sense to me, and left me wanting more!
The author wrote: “If you enjoyed this book, please, please (don’t make me get down on my knees and beg) considering leaving a positive review on Amazon.com.” Well David as I did LOVE your books and do hope you’ll be able to continue writing for a living, it’s my turn to write something about The Dwellers Saga. I only hope I’ll give it justice because writing a review is always a little bit tricky for me.
So, who should read these books? Every fan of epic dystopian stories! Why? Because it has all the ingredients to give you a great time: -an apocalyptic future world. A meteor hit the earth centuries ago, causing mass destruction and people are now forced to live underground;
-a fight to survive. A ruling class (Sun Dwellers) is oppressing others (Moon and Star Dwellers) and a rebellion is brewing. The democracy is a real tyranny and people are imprisoned every day under false pretense;
-great characters and I’m not only speaking about the main characters Adele and Tristan but all their sidekicks are lovable. Tawny, disgusted by her parent’s treason; Cole (I bawled like a baby reading about his true story) strong, hot tempered but so loyal; Roc Tristan’s servant/friend scared to death but fighting nonetheless; Elsey Adele’s young sister so brave and optimistic; etc. Adele is beautiful, smart and a badass and Tristan is swoon worthy but he is so much more than good looks being loyal, dedicated, strong and all;
-mystery: why do Tristan and Adele feel such agony when close together? Who is helping them in their quest? What secret does Tristan know that could change their world?
-action, action and more action. The whole story felt like a quest or a huge chase. Tristan is chasing Adele; Adele is looking for her family; the government is tracking Adele and Tristan. Everyone is running after someone. So you’re taken into the game and just have to read and read and read some more to know who will catch who. Don’t forget to breathe though, this simple task is not quite so easy sometimes with all the suspense and thrill and… When you see stars and turn blue, it’s time to inhale;
-a love story. It’s an unusual one because being attracted to someone is supposed to make you feel good but… this change is definitely a perk to the book;
-strong friendships born in dire circumstances;
- and I’m forgetting many other things I’m sure!
So you’ve guessed, I loved these books, it was a really good surprise and I can’t recommend this series enough. I’ve read all books in a row and barely finished one when I already put on the “buy it now” button. Truly, go for it and give David’s books a chance, you won’t regret it! Thanks for the story David and I hope it will be made in a movie someday because I’m convinced it has as much potential as “The Hunger Games”; “Divergent” or ”The Maze Runner”!

500 years after the destruction of earth, the remainder of humankind lives within its core. Over time democracy changes to totalitarianism. The Sun Dwellers are at the top of the hierarchy, receiving 85% of all resources, living lavishly, while contributing very little. In the middle are the Moon Dwellers, working long back breaking hours, while living in poverty, receiving only 10% of the resources. And then lastly, the Star Dwellers, while forced to work the hardest, are the ones receiving the least, at a mere 5%.
Seventeen year old Adele is a Moon Dweller, who has been sentenced to life in prison for nothing more than her parents being traitors to the President. Seventeen year old Tristan is the first born son of the current President, and in line to be the next successor. His family has held the presidency for over 400 years. There's only one problem: he abhors his father, the government, and just about everything they stand for. During a trip to the Moon realm for his father, Tristan locks eyes with Adele. It's not so much love at first sight as it is pain at first sight, when a shockwave of pain slices through His head and spine. Whatever it is, Tristan is determined to follow through and find the answer.
Prior to starting this book I'd previously read two of David Estes' series (The Slip Trilogy box set and Salem's Revenge box set). Both of these series were amazing and has quickly made this author one of my Top 10 contenders for favorite author. And while I eagerly plowed into this book with a non-restrained gusto, unfortunately, this book didn't capture me quite the same as the others did.
The characters in this book just felt a little flat. In the author's other books, I was so completely invested in those characters that in the life and death moments I would either breathe the sigh of relief, or wipe the lone tear off my face (ok, maybe it was more than one). I found myself detached throughout, even in what should've been emotional parts.
I also am having trouble with the plot and pacing. This book, while starting out nicely, was harder to get into as the pace quickly died down. There were also parts of it that seemed wholly unbelievable in which I did the eye roll. Lastly, at the end, we are no where closer to any answers than we were at the very beginning of the book.
On a good note, the world building was awesome, it always is. Too many times, especially is a dystopian/post apoc novel, you're forced fed several pages of scenery so you can "see" it. One of the many things this author excels at is imagery. In his case, less really is more, you can close your eyes, and you're surrounded by the pictures painted.
Overall, I think this book is about a 3.5 rating. I'm definitely going to be reading the next in the series, mostly because I do know what a wonderful author David Estes is. By his writing style on his other books, I have no doubt that I'll get the answers I'm looking for, and some lovely twists and turns along the way.
(Ammendment to my review: This was David Estes' debut book into YA dystopian writing. Had I known that at the time, I would've given more leniency, and graded on a curve as I do all new authors. I've said in many reviews that most new authors get better with time, and that if you go back and read one of your favorite authors debut books, you probably wouldn't recognize the writing.)
** REVIEW OF THE STAR DWELLERS **
The second book starts where the first let off. Adele and Tawni are traveling to the Star realm to rescue Adele's mom. Meanwhile, Tristan, Ben and Roc stay together in the Moon realm to try to convince the leaders of both the Moon and Star realms to work together to defeat the President.
Admittedly, I was not overly impressed with the first book of this series. Thankfully, that changed within the few chapters of this book. The action picks up quickly and holds you hostage throughout the pages. It keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering how they're going to get out of the situation, whole and in tact. Which is something else I love about David Estes'writing: it's realistic. It's not all happily ever afters, sometimes major characters don't make it. And the MC's have to pick themselves up and figure out how to carry on.
Speaking of characters, the last book I mentioned that they fell kinda flat. This book, I felt that we really got a better understanding of the characters and their backgrounds. Utilizing snippets of the past, the author gives us great insight into what incidences shaped them into who they become and why they've made some of the choices they've made.
I absolutely loved the plot in this book. If you're a fan of 'The Hunger Games' series or 'The Internal Defence' series (both dystopian/totalitarian government genre with resistance uprisings), then this series in right up your alley. The twists and turns in this book is what makes this author one of the very best.
Overall this book was just a really great read from start to finish. I'm still not a fan of the whole Insta love (or is it Insta pain in this case?), but I am curious to know the mystery behind Tristan and Adele's strange connection. I'm definitely looking forward to jumping into book three in just a few minutes.
** THE SUN DWELLERS **
As I read the final word on the last page of this book, all I could say was: "Wow, David Estes hit another one completely out of the park!". This book had all of the things that I love in a great story. First of all, the world building. This is something that the author excels at in every book I've read of his, which is no easy feat when writing dystopian novels. The details are rich without being repetitive. They were many times I almost had a sense of claustrophobia while visualizing being underground. That's how good the images are.
Now to show how much of a book geek I am, I actually became very attached to the characters. They are written in such a way, that you can't help but laugh with them, feel their pain, or cheer them on. Although generally I dislike the use of multiple POV's, David Estes does this flawlessly. If more author's could write multiple POV's like this, then it would be my preferred reading method. It's through this use of multiple POV's that you get to know multiple characters. Also using a small amount of brilliant flashbacks, you're able to see how characters act the way they did. The character development in every book deepened dramatically. Each character finds strength and learns to believe in themselves, as well as in each other.
Lastly, the plot was just on point and well paced. Going from the very first page of the very first book to the very last page of the very last book, everything just fit together seamlessly. From its concept, it's obvious that the author knew where he wanted his story to go. The story was nether rushed nor was it filled with pages of endless filler. It has a beginning, middle, and end. Another thing I enjoyed was all the twists and turns in this book. Never knowing what was going to happen next.
Overall this book was just absolutely amazing. Much better than the first two, and quite possible (imho) better than both combined! Can't wait to start reading the country dwellers saga and then the 4th book that ties both series: The Earth Dwellers. If you haven't read The Moon Dwellers saga do so. And if your haven't read any of David Estes books, pick up any one of them.... you won't be disappointed.
The Moon Dwellers and the rest of the Dwellers saga was my very first experience with a David Estes novel and I was delighted to find a new favorite author. I read the series as fast as he could publish them, putting a full day aside so I could devour each book on release day if possible.
I'm excited that the set is now available as a boxed set and I encourage everyone to grab this format so you can binge read one right after the other. I did that on audio a few months ago and it was an amazing experience not having to wait in between.
Below are my original reviews:
THE MOON DWELLERS What a great creative concept for a book series! This dystopian world blew me away when it was revealed where and how it came about. I really enjoy David's writing along with his heroines and heroes and can't wait to continue with the world of The Dwellers!
THE STAR DWELLERS Another great book in The Dwellers series! The Star Dwellers left me wanting more of this world and the characters I've come to know and love! From the beginning I was gripped by scene after scene of drama and uncertainty of whether the heroes would make it. And the twists and turns blew my mind as they unraveled bit by bit! I love the relationships between Tristan and Roc, Adele and Tawni, Tristan and Adele, Roc and Esley, and on and on... Thank you, David, for giving me a glimpse of the next book which starts off by revealing one of the biggest secrets yet. Now I'm chomping at the bit to read The Sun Dwellers! I'm really enjoying this series!!
THE SUN DWELLERS Nicely done, David! I sure did not see that one coming!! The Sun Dwellers is best of the series without doubt! I was giggling out loud at some of the banter and antics of the main characters! And obviously very saddened at other parts. And yay for Tawni, my favorite! I can't wait to dig into your next book!
I liked this boxed set as it gives the reader a true reading adventure. Personally, I liked the original style of writing by this young author, very natural flow of words and ideas, fully blown setting, action-packed story, adventures without end, to mention but a few strong points. Moreover, this author provokes critical thinking about the future of humankind. Despite the dystopian literary form, the saga appears so distinct and different from some previously well-known filmed ones. Something I was a bit worried about at the beginning; however, eventually I admired the fact David had not fallen into the trap of emulation, he simply deserves his own reputable place here. To be honest, let me summarize in this way: well written with definite signs of mature prose, undeniable talent and a great potential with a promising future. The only downside I could think of is maybe the number of pages, which you definitely forget about while immersing yourself in the plot.
So one of my favorite series recently ventured to become an audiobook.
If that was not cool enough, this unique series (as I have never before seen two sister series end into the ulimate final book) has the first 3 books of the Dweller Series in ONE download. No scrambling around to download the second or third book, it just automatically goes to the next book.
HOW COOL IS THAT!!!
Enough of the format...so listening again to the series, but with some fantastic narrators, you just fall heads over heels...spine buzzing sensations...with Adele and that hottie Tristan again and again.
I understand that they are releasing the two series into audiobook one book per month. I just can't wait to hear the characters from the Country Saga.
I just loved that final line in the Sun Dwellers...I just can't wait to meet the speaker.
The Dwellers Saga is a young adult science fiction story in which the entire US population has been forced to move underground.
This underground realm is divided into three casts of people. The wealthy sun dwellers that don't need to work and enjoy life as if they were living on the surface of the earth. And the moon and star dwellers that basically do the work to sustain the lifestyle of the sun dwellers. The star dwellers being the worse of of the two.
It is an interesting setting and the story itself is fine. Some of the twists in the story are predictable or just plain silly. "We've been talking about this plan for the past few days and now I suddenly remember one thing that changes everything", ugh.
The story is told from the viewpoints of the two main characters. This is a nice idea that worked for me, but does get a tad worn by the end of the third book. The reading level of the book is fairly basic, which does make it a quick read, but you may not like it.
This is also very much a young adult story, so if you don't like half of your book filled with puppy love, it's probably best to skip this one. There were a few points where I had a hard time to finish the book, which explains the fairly low score (it's a personal thing).
This is a great series of books. The story was engaging and the character and story development was very well done. David Estes is a great storyteller. This is the second series I have read by him and I will read all that he writes. The first ones I read were the 'Fatemarked' series. I highly recommend reading this series.and any other book written by David Estes. You will not be disappointed!
I enjoy reading these types of books. They show young adults that they can be more then slugs playing video games. Now i know this is not reality but maybe it gets kids to think outside the box when situations come up. I love being able to make the movie in my head rather then on the big screen.
It’s just as good as the Hunger Games books. It’s a dystopian type of books that easy to read and have well developed characters you will love. With all the twists and turns and the emotions that you can feel for the characters, this makes it a page turner you can’t stop reading. I recommend this book for people who love these dystopian type of books
I read the first as a stand-alone, but was disgusted with the cliffhanger ending. I've read the other earth dweller series and love this author's writing style. It's super descriptive and takes you into each mind of the characters you will soon love!
This set contains the first three books in the Dwellers Saga. These books should not be read as standalone and this set makes it easy. There is violence. This storyline shows us that some people will do anything to remain in power. Well Worth Reading. Now I need to find out what happens next.
I so enjoyed this series, it was fast paced and very entertaining. There were times I holding my breath. This is a good read for anyone that enjoys a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I couldn't get through the last book. The first book was ok because of the character development and setting the scene of a new world. By book 3, it was repetitive and predictable. I tried to persist with it but in the end decided life is too short and there are better books to read.
Outstanding anthology . I have read the books individually , but having them combined into one anthology it's so much easier to keep up with the story .
I really enjoy the writings of David Estes. Fast paced, a little different, characters that you can love, root for,. There's strength, hope, fear and sadness, but always strength and hope. Well written. Thank you for another awesome read
Moon Dwellers February 17- 20 Star Dwellers 20 - 25 Sun Dwellers 25 - 28
Also included are three short stories and a sequence (sensibly) removed from the main narrative.
A decent post-apocalyptic coming-of-age YA story - 500 years after a disastrous meteor strike the decendents of the survivors (3 million picked by lottery) inhabit underground caverns presumably below the continental US. Divided into three levels - the richer, upper, privileged Sun Realm, a less rich Moon Realm and a frankly poor Star Realm well underground - the now 5 million population is ruled by a hereditary President. The elder son/crown prince Tristan is dissatisfied with the status quo and goes on the run - prompted in part by an odd reaction to the sight of a girl while he visits the Moon Realm. Accompanied by his friend/servant Roc Tristan embarks upon a journey through the realms that will bring him love and heartache.
The narrrative alternates between Tristan and Adele's PoV.
An intriguing premise that works more or less well - my main beef is the rather too many instances where the group of youngsters seem to have more than their fair share of luck. That is leavened by some elements of tragedy but probably not enough. The ending is satisfactory - some closure to the main plot but leaving open the possiblity of further threads (and in fact there seems to be a 'sister' set of books, and both sets have an identically-titled fourth volume which may tie the two together).
The formatting of the Kobo version is odd - the Contents list only gives access to the 'after' material, making navigation within the three 'volumes' of the main story time-consuming, to put it mildly.
Just finished the first 3 books of the Dwellers saga. Now I'm off to start the Country saga so that I can read the the 4th book, The Earth Dwellers that connects both series. I hope the Country saga is just as engaging as the Dwellers because I really want to see how the story ends for Adelle & Tristan and the rest of the survivors. How do the Tri-Realms come together and just what is going on up on the surface.
This was a great action packed dystopian adventure with a little bit of romance thrown in.
A great yarn about a post apocalyptic world in which the survivors live in three Realms. It is seemingly a reflection of the class system. In which, The Sun Realm ( those living closest to the surface) have all the wealth, all the privilege and rule the other two Realms; The Moon Realm and the even more destitute Star Realm. It is time for a rebellion, a revolution against the corrupt Sun Realm, lead by President Nailin. Who better to lead the rebellion than escaped prisoner Adele and Tristan Nailin. Who is fed up with his father's despotism.
As earths surface is destroyed, a lottery is used to pick who will live or die. It's an interesting sociological study in human nature and how far humans and greed will go to take advantage of the less fortunate in the most harrowing of times. An interesting idea in living underground. I really enjoyed the read while simultaneously happy it wasn't happening to me.
I really enjoyed this series and am starting on the Country Saga next. This boxed set contained a novella which was helpful ion filling in some gaps that would have been overlooked.
I would recommend this book as a great read for teens to "oldsrers" like me. Age 74) . I found the entire set of books well written with a believable story line. Is there more to follow??
Strange to think that this COULD happen. All it takes is a little rock falling from the sky. Liked the characters. First book in a long time where good characters perish.
