Creds: An IRS Adventure creates an engaging story of conspiracy and a race to the top over the backdrop of one of the most despised occupations in the country. Ben Parris takes on the unbelievable challenge of writing a novel about an IRS agent and creates a protagonist that readers care about and even root for. Better yet, Parris is able to make the story of Danny Shapiro’s rise in the IRS an engaging page-turner.

Danny Shapiro is a workaholic and an unstoppable up-and-comer. He joins the IRS at the very bottom in hopes of becoming an auditor, and despite numerous attempts by others to get rid of him, he makes a name for himself. As Danny navigates the dark world of the IRS, the Big Brother feel of the novel keeps the reader constantly guessing and trying to decide which conspiracy theory to believe next. Driven by his love for his girlfriend Linda, Danny wrestles the IRS into his dream job and makes Big Brother work for him.

The most enjoyable part of Creds is the characters Parris creates. Ever character is vivid, real, and pulls you in. From Verna, the conspiracy-crazy, red-lip-stick-wearing, seductive coworker to Purisi, the kneecapping thug-for-hire, every character is inventive and engaging. None of Parris’s characters feel cliché or trite. They are real people that you will love to love or love to hate.

As a whole, Parris takes a novel that should have never worked and makes it a real page-turner.
