Donna’s dream of running a Victorian Bed and Breakfast is almost a reality. Her lack of inn keeping expertise, a shabby house in need of dire renovation and lack of money has slowed her down a bit.

The murdered man in the upstairs parlor is her biggest obstacle. Less determined people might give up, but not Donna. No killer is going to stop her from serving apple crumb cake to high paying guests.

Her natural skill at the Clue board game, along with the grudging assistance of veteran detective, Mark Taber, an overweight Puggle, and a chatty octogenarian neighbor should help her sniff out the killer unless she’s snuffed out first.

A 3.5 and a Good Book

Donna Tollhouse is a no nonsense nurse who has decided to open an upscale B&B. Only two things stand in her way. Months of renovations and a dead body in her parlor.
While Donna can be on the abrasive side, her brother Daniel has the looks, charm and charisma of the family.
How this woman who is addicted to mysteries will get along with homicide detective in charge of the case proves to be a work in progress.

I almost stopped reading but I'm so happy I didn't. The character of Donna turned out to be a good MC and the story line kept me guessing till the end.
No silly MC who does crazy things and no falling down gorgeous detective. Just real people in a real life game of clue.
Now to see if Donna can play nice with guests and not ruffle feathers by giving her opinion. And by the way, a great cookie recipe.
Thanks M. K. Scott

A story about a nurse trying to create a new life by buying and renovating a house to be a Bed and Breakfast. I really liked Donna. She is strong, straight-forward and realistic. Unfortunately, right after taking possession of her house, there is a murder man discovered in it. In traditional cozy ways, the detective is an appropriate love interest for Donna. I liked Mark too. He is unique with an engaging sense of humour. I enjoyed the book but felt like there wasn't enough of it. Not enough drama or suspense. Everything gets wrapped up quickly and very intriguingly. But the most intriguing bits are only mentioned in the conclusion. I might try the next book to find out what happens to this couple.

Why do authors give birth (fictionally speaking) to annoying female leads? The protaganist's unfriendly, pushy, stubborn and overly independent personality ruined what could have been a hard to put down book.

The story was promising but the unlikeable protaganist and the book's slower than a snail's pace were distracting. Also, the crime, motive and investigating aspects of the story were both underdeveloped and disappointing.

It was obvious that the author was trying to present the reader with well developed characters but in doing so it seemed as though the "mystery" was forgotten.

Not a horrible book but not a great one either.

New Cozy mystery

Great plot, fun characters and fast flowing read. I enjoyed the interaction between Detective Tabor and Donna the Inn owner. Donna is a strong, no nonsense nurse and property owner and Detective Tabor sees and appreciates her crime solving skills. I like the fact that they feel on equal footing. I look forward to more of the series.
There is good action and suspense. The plot development is strong and smooth.

Donna, a surgical nurse contemplating retirement, buys a fixer-upper Victorian mansion with the goal of running a B&B. Discovering a dead body while starting renovations leads to complications. Fun read and series. I will read more of this series.

When 50-year-old Donna buys a new house, planning to turn it into an inn, she never expected to find a man dead in one of her rooms.
A man not just dead, but murdered, too!

With the investigation going through her house, will she be able to finish her preparations and have her inn ready soon enough? Having those thoughts and being anxious about her plans, she starts investigating the murder with Mark, the detective who has been assigned to the case, and the help of her octogenarian neighbor and Donna's overweight dog!

This was an unusual story, I fully enjoyed reading about.
I particularly loved Donna, the protagonist.

She is a determined woman, who has seen her share of life and knows what she wants! When left at the altar at the young age of 22 she decided to never get married. Now, at the age of 50, I would expect her to seem a little older, but surprisingly she did not! Her way of thinking was quite refreshing, and I loved so much the way she stands by her beliefs and decisions. She has set her mind on making her new house into an inn, and won't settle for anything else!

I also loved Mark! He is clever and witty, even if Donna disapproves of a few of his unhealthy habits!

The way the author wrote this story was lovely, emphasizing what a witty heroine Donna was, as well as giving as crystal clear impressions of the rest of the people involved!

A murder mystery so well planned and narrated! I completely loved the fact that in the solving of the mystery not only detectives were involved, but also everyday people - and animals! Also, the unexpected twists and turns would just get me on the edge of my seat, another way in which this story amazed me!

All in all, 4 stars to a murder mystery, which involved a detective and a very stubborn, very determined and awesome nurse!

Murder Mansion is the first book from The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries by M.K. Scott. Readers will enjoy the story. Guests without reservations end up dead in M.K. Scott’s Murder Mansion. Donna Tollhouse can’t wait to renovate and open The Painted Lady Bed and Breakfast Inn, but gets a setback when she finds a body in one of the rooms. The new neighbours aren’t pleased about the scandal or having petulant Donna around, and Donna thinks a few of them are supercilious.

She impresses Detective Mark Taber with her keen observations about the crime, but ignores his warning about getting involved in the investigation. Her neighbour, Herman, relates an old mystery about the house that had remained unoccupied for some time. Nothing, however, is going to stop Donna from opening The Painted Lady Inn, not even a murderer.

Murder Mansion is an amusing sleuth mystery with a protagonist who is headstrong, doesn’t mince words, and often hurts people with her snappish remarks, although she believes she is being nice. The character development is good and their reactions to the crime and having an unfamiliar person move into their community are natural.

M.K. Scott writes with a sense of humour as some characters’ personal lives are very interesting. The cover illustration is appealing and I understand why Donna selected the house for her Inn. This book is suspenseful with twists that come with a nice conclusion. Murder Mansion, Volume 1 in The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries by M.K. Scott makes for an enjoyable story.

This very slow paced story read more like a romance than a mystery. Sure, someone was murdered and the murderer is revealed at the end, but the "investigation" seemed to be mainly in the protagonists head.

Pages and pages of internal dialogue that added little to nothing to the story, made finishing the book a real slog. It had such potential. :(

A great start to a cozy mystery series!
The cute book cover caught my interest. I downloaded the book and really enjoyed the story.
I love the characters in this story! For example: 1) The 50 something career nurse who buys an eight bedroom house on a whim to open a B&B because she thinks she can offer a better experience than some B&B establishments she has frequented. Did I forget to mention she is just the least bit of a micro-manager of all things? 2) The detective sent to her home to investigate a murder she discovers. She really does try to not find him attractive. 3) Her recently married younger brother who all women still find handsome, charming, and irresistible. He doesn’t even seem to notice the effect he has on women. 4) Her mother who is just the least bit quirky, yet lovable. 5) The assortment of neighbors she inherits with the property. How to best describe them? A little of everything from friendly to snobbish, nosy, eccentric, crusty to the point of being hateful, just plain weird, and suspiciously dangerous. M K Scott has woven these characters into a wonderful whodunit mystery.
This book is a clean, fun, and easy read. A very enjoyable and entertaining cozy mystery that I would recommend to anyone who loves to solve a great whodunit while relaxing in an easy chair.
There is a bonus feature, a recipe for macadamia coconut chocolate chip cookies. Yum!

This is the first book in The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries by M.K. Scott. It starts out a little slow with a whole lot of details plus I felt like there was too much romance between the detective and Donna, the main character. But as you keep reading you realize all this is necessary plus the story just pulls you in. Donna is a nurse who just bought the Painted Lady Inn to turn into a B&B. The day after she buys the place she finds a dead body in her soon to be B&B. Detective Mark Taber (his description makes him sound like Colombo) is the detective handling the case and Donna decides he needs her help solving the crime because she can't start her renovations until the killer is found. In this book you get to meet a few of her essentric neighbors which hopefully will be included in future books. This had a great story and unusual characters and a surprise ending. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Perhaps because Donna (the heroine) and I are close in age, we're simpatico. A grumpy person isn't usually someone you want to shower kindness upon, but Donna is trying to become more likeable even though it's absolute work. And so the story begins: Donna has decided to become an innkeeper even though the general public is a trial. She's found the perfect house (needs a little work) and is set to gradually move from her career as a nurse into the position of an owner of a B&B where she will serve mouth-watering feasts to her well-heeled guests. That's the plan, anyway. All this is changed when, on her first morning of ownership, a body appears in one of her rooms - dead, no less.

I wish I could tell you that it was smooth sailing throughout the book to the conclusion, but there were a few hiccups along the way. The denouement was rushed and a little far-fetched. But the promise for the future, oh yes, there will be good things to come!

You have a nurse Donna Tollhouse who is a nurse who decides to open a bed and breakfast (BB). She runs into problems as the building needs a lot of restoration and secondly she finds a dead body in the BB. Donna isn't a likeable person, she is a matter of fact type. I find it funny she wants to open a successful BB. That in itself makes for an interesting story itself. You have a well defined storyline with believable and interesting characters. You have the interaction between Detective Tabor and Donna. He likes and respects her. MK has a way to describe characters which adds to this story. This humorous storyline will keep your interest. She is good at not giving clues as you can't figure out whodunnit till the end of the book. I enjoyed this book.

I enjoyed getting to know Donna and her sweet puggle Jasper as well as her brother Daniel and Mark Taber, a detective who took quite a shine to Donna. He even stopped some of his smoking, because he knew it bothered her. They made a great sleuthing team after Donna found a dead guy in the house she was renovating into a B&B. I had no idea who was trying to kill Donna or Mark, but it was interesting to follow them around and see how they solved this.

Once again a skillet proved useful in the showdown. I loved how it ended and got things completely wrapped up with explanations. Donna cracked me up how she tried to be so independent and tough, but underneath it all, I could tell she had a special soft place in her heart for a handsome detective.

I like Donna. A no-nonsense skilled nurse, she's decided to fix up an old house and open a B&B. Her project gets side-tracked when she discovers a recently dead body in the house. Impatient to finish her house renovations, she insists on trying to solve the crime herself, whether the detective in charge approves or not. In the process she's revealed as an intelligent, observant, and rather determined (stubborn) lady with a wide store of eclectic knowledge and perhaps more courage than is in her best interests. The detective is also good at what he does, and can't help feeling protective toward Donna. A hint of a developing romance here?

Matters escalate, with both Donna and the detective in danger of becoming the next crime statistics. The story moves along at a good clip and is hard to put down. An auspicious start to a new series.

Murder Mansion is the first book in the Painted Lady Inn mystery series. I liked that the main character-- Donna Tollhouse is a single, self-sufficient, employed older woman who is determined to open a Victorian Bed & Breakfast. When she finds a dead man in one of her upstairs rooms, her renovations come to a stand still. With the help of Detective Mark Taber, she is eventually able to solve the mystery. This book is heavy on the beginning relationship/potential romance between Donna and the detective. It does involve Donna dealing with some dangerous situations as she avoids being the killer's next victim. The author does a really good job describing the characters so that they are easy to imagine. I look forward to seeing Donna opening the Painted Lady.

Overall it was pretty good. I like that the protagonist was older. I also enjoy the idea of her starting an inn as a change of pace from nursing. But Donna was a bit annoying with her bitter attitude toward men. I'm guessing it had something to do with the marriage that never happened.
I don't know of any restaurants or cafes where the workers are so nosy that they listen in on conversations and kick out paying customers. Why even risk the potentially bad review?
Donna does not seem to be very bright. She decides to stay alone in a house where a murder just took place. She didn't even tell Taber.
One thing I liked was that Taber wasn't some handsome hunk for her to fall immediately in love with. I also preferred him as a character over Donna.

Donna, a no nonsense head nurse, decided that she would like to open a B & B. Having stayed at several other B&Bs, she knew just how she would NOT like to be treated and just how a B&B ought NOT to be run. The only fly in the ointment was the dead body that was left in the upstairs room when she turned up to refurbish her new premises. I really enjoyed this book, it is the first cozy mystery of MK Scott's that I have read. I cannot help but smile at Donna's thoughts to herself and how she stops herself from being her naturally no nonsense self and tried to be the congenial host! Looking forward to reading more of the Painted Lady Inn.

Donna is the new owner of the Painted Lady Inn, and she’s determined to get it rehabilitated and make it a success. She hits a snag, though, when a corpse is found in one of the upstairs rooms. What would have stopped others in their tracks only makes her more determined to succeed, so she sets out to solve the murder.

Murder Mansion by M. K. Scott is the first book in what promises to be an interesting and entertaining series. Well-developed characters and humor inserted as deftly as strawberries atop a chocolate cake will keep you reading.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I give it four stars.

This was an ejoyable, cozy read. I feel the author wrote the story very well, with very few grammatical errors. That's a plus in a big way! It was compelling and intriguing and kept my attention for hours.

The only negative I can submit is that there were a few too many descriptions for my taste. I realize in the past, that was acceptable. Current authors tend to skip them and allow the dialogue to dominate. However, Donna Tollhouse had a large volume of thoughts. If not for this, I would have rated it a '5'.

The content brought many chuckles for the mature adult.

I'm torn about this one. One the one hand, it was very slow going, on the other hand it was intriguing enough that I really wanted to know what happened. Donna Tollhouse is unlike any character I've read in a cozy, which I really liked, however, the development of the story was a little long for my taste and the mystery sort of took a back seat to Donna's personality and her desire to open an Inn. Still, it was interesting and well written...all in all not a bad read.

This is the first in the series and the first time reading this author. The main characters are Donna, her brother Daniel and the Detective Taber. Donna has bought an old mansion that she plans to turn into a B & B. The first day she finds a dead body inside and that starts her problems. Between the cops telling her she has to stay out, to the killer who seems to have it out for her, Donna is determined to keep moving forward. Can she figure out who is behind this before it's too late ?

I received this book free of charge from Smashwords. I am not sure whether it was an ARC or not. If it was an ARC then the few punctuation mistakes could be overlooked. I think the book was well-written for a cozy. Some authors write cozies, and they churn out so many I personally feel the quality suffers. I won't name names, unless I have already reviews some of their work. Anyway, the book is likable. There was a recipe in the back of the book. I would recommend this series.

That is the first book of the "Painted Lady Inn" in which Donna bought a neglected Victorian to tranform it into a periodically B&B.

But she didn't expect to find an unknown murder victim on the premises on her first day of renovation.

The detective on call is Mark Taber and we will hear much more about him in further books.

It is refreshing to read about Donna's struggle to be a polite inn keeper and speaking her mind.

New author to me (woohoo, new backlist)!

I think this is one of those rare books where I really didn't like the main character and I liked the detective. Usually with cozy mysteries, it's the other way around. LOL

The main character was not likeable at all. It was like her against the world, not fun reading her monologues. I hope that changes since there are a lot of books in this series. I would like to continue the series but we shall see.

Trouble inside and plenty of suspects

Donna’s dreams of opening a B&B are becoming a realty. Finding a dead body in the house puts things on hold. The handsome detective investigating the case seems to take her theories seriously. Can the two of them work together to solve the mystery? Read this cozy and find out.
