The Farm #1

The Farm

Rate this book
It was supposed to be a pleasant evening out; a break from the stress of the hard-working week they had both endured. A bite to eat in one of their favourite restaurants and then, if there was time, a movie at the cinema opposite. It had been - her husband - Sam's choice; an impromptu date. Yet his day had been one cock-up after another. Meetings had gone on longer than they should have, his phone had run out of battery and every single traffic light seemed to be working against him. By the time he got to the restaurant Sophie wasn't there but - as he would soon discover - she wasn't at home either and neither was she with friends.

She was down at The Farm, bound to the wall with thick chains, and she wasn't about to be leaving anytime soon...

From Matt Shaw (Sick B*stards Trilogy, PORN and Rotting Dead F*cks) comes to new, disturbing psychological horror! Will you visit The Farm and - more to the point - will you live to tell the tale?

Biography

MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life as a writer and hobbit – beginning with writing screenplays and short stories for his own amusement before finally getting published when he was twenty-seven years and forty-five seconds old.

Once Published weekly in a lad's magazine with his photography work, Matt Shaw is also a published author and cartoonist. Has to be said, can be a bit of a flirt and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhat of a klutz.

Sam and Sophie are on date night, she's waiting for him to turn up, he's running late. When he finally arrives she's not there, he searches everywhere, restaurant, cinema, no sign. He figures she's gone home, a mite pissed off.

We then go back two years to America, West Virginia and a woman tied up in a barn, kidnapped by a psychopath. A deadly game commences, she has on the surface two chances to escape and one chance to save her brother before this mad man leaves. This game also involves a wood chipping machine, not pretty.

These two stories eventually come together on a farm in the English countryside. The Farm by Matt Shaw is a well written horror novella, the story uses differing timelines to keep things mildly interesting but it was lacking the Shaw twist and nothing really stood out for me.

This is my third Matt Shaw novella purchased. One of the things that has drawn me to his books are cover blurbs like "some scenes may disturb" and warnings about extreme content. Why? Because I love horror and can handle pretty dark, gory and graphic stuff. I can only think of maybe 3 horror books ever where I've not stomached certain scenes.

But sadly yet again I'm left feeling it's a build-up that didn't deliver. (I personally think it's best coming from another author or reviewer also if on the cover, but that's just my personal thing). This was an okay plot but the few dark scenes in this are not that graphic or disturbing. I do of course compare to many other horror books read over the years since my teens and loving the genre. Am I missing something?

The plot is okay but somewhat predictable. Quite a few scenes I knew were coming but won't mention which for fear of spoilers for you. So that shock factor again didn't tingle my senses. It jumps around a little too. I didn't feel the book flowed easily.

Matt has written a huge number of books and has a popular following. Hence me persisting in trying more books. I even bought another after this one left me flat (nearly finished and review on way soon). I want to be afraid, terrified, shocked, disturbed - but to date this has not even come close. I hate to say it but I tend to get just bored.

I think of authors such as Stuart Keane, Brian Moreland, Graham Masterton who have all taken my scare levels to the extreme, pushing the boundaries of horror. Then we have the type of horror that Adam Nevill and Josh Malerman write where I am spooked, creeped out and leaving the light on. In a nutshell I like horror to impact me.

I found some moments in this when I was like "yes!" (Happy to discuss those in a PM if anyone is curious) and thought it was really going to expand and take off to find the moment was too brief and momentum dropped to switch to another scene. Noooooo I cried! I wanted that fleshed out (excuse the bad pun). Those all-too-brief scenes were brilliant and had oodles of potential.

As I'm now on my third purchased book - I'd love anyone to recommend to me any of Matt's many books that may meet my taste for the extreme and give me the chills. I'm still open-minded.

Sometimes promising honest reviews to my followers sucks. However it's something I promised myself and others years ago when I started reviewing. I'm sorry Matt this didn't float my boat.

I will say this. Those with less thick-skin would no doubt enjoy Matt's books and he has his loyal fan base so me not joining the club won't make one iota of difference. But the challenge is on! Recommend to me a book that you felt did hit the extreme horror mark and I will give it a whirl.

Sophie is waiting for her husband to arrive for their date night--dinner and a movie. He has already informed her that he's running late but as the minutes go by, she grows increasingly annoyed. Suddenly, a man bumps into her, causing her cell phone to fall and break. He asks her to wait while he retrieves the money from a nearby automatic teller to pay for its repair.

Sam shows up, nearly an hour late, and can't find Sophie anywhere. The next morning he knows that something is terribly wrong. Sophie knows, too, when she wakes to the sound of a woman screaming and discovers that she is being held captive in what appears to be a barn. She tries not to panic. She knows that Sam will find her. But as the hours pass by with little police help and few leads, Sam fears the worst.

This was a good, engrossing story. There are many shifts between time, place and character point of view, but the transitions are smooth and effectively further the story by providing answers/significant information. It's a quick read and very entertaining, though in my opinion, it is not very extreme, gory or disturbing. It's quite mild, really.

☆☆☆☆☆ 5 Love Thy Brother Stars☆☆☆☆☆

I have to say this is by far the best Matt Shaw book I have read. After reading his work, you know a HEA is not coming but your mind gets wrapped up in this and you have an ounce of hope that a knight in shining armour will arrive. WRONG!!!

Don't say I didn't warn you.

A couple set out for a date night together, gets a change of plans when their paths cross the path of Shane.

 photo PicsArt_12-27-10.24.20_zpss5vbah6b.jpg

You see Shane has been horribly wronged by an ex girlfriend and his best friend. Finding out that you have been cheated on is one thing but to find out you were just a cover up love for a brother/sister forbidden love tends to throw a once normal guy over the edge of reasoning.

 photo tumblr_n37hx7r7LC1tuiuyqo1_500_zps71tpfxpt.gif

One little phrase....

"Meeting your brother?"

Creates a devastating story of a woman's fight for survival a husband's desperation to find his wife and a back story of a man shattered by a taboo secret!!!

FABULOUSLY WRONG GOODNESS!!! High Five Mr Shaw!!

A more than decent short story that has good structure and is well delivered, especially as it's not at all obvious for half the book who the psychopath is and what his motive could possibly be - liked this feature. Lots of very enjoyable touches and creativity in the story with the usual blood and gore, but perhaps more devilment and downright wickedness wouldn't have gone amiss in order to spice it up to another level. However, 'good to see' that there can be no doubt about our villain being an out-and-out 'nutter' so best not miss what evil acts he gets to in 'Farm 2'. An entertaining short read (but not that extreme) - Rating: 3.6 horror-filled stars.

This was quite a good short horror story, only 90 pages.

It was an intriguing premise. A kidnapping - a husband trying to find his missing wife, and then we jump back to the kidnappers past to discover just how deranged the man is.

He might be crazy, he really has lost the plot, but he’s clearly pretty competent at what he does having never been caught. He is a psycho who likes to torment his victims and some of his games reminded me of The Saw films. Much like those films there was a fair amount of gore here, our evil protagonist was nothing if not inventive and varied with his various crimes.

The imagery of the murders was good but I have to say that apart from one big plot twist/reveal I guessed most of the incidents before they happened, so a little predictable at times, not to say I did not enjoy reading about them anyway.

This could have been better if it was slightly longer but the author manages to cram quite a lot of action into quite a short book and there wasn’t really a dull moment.

I was slightly disappointed, as I always am, by typos, there were a few, not loads but enough to make me comment on them and to annoy me.

I think overall this is good little horror, it has some gore, a great little protagonist (the kidnapper) and even a little surprise but fell short of being a great book.

3.5*/5, rounding up to 4*/5

Yup

Once again matt Shaw has shown us what a sick twisted individual he really is. Where he gets all this perversion and gore I couldn't tell you but I hope he never loses this place. He is one of the most disgusting, vile , and most brilliant horror writers that I've ever read. The farm was a great story with a unexpected ending. Keep writing and I will always keep reading !!

This was a short story that had my full attention from pretty much the beginning and held me right through to the end. The characters were real enough for me to really care about what happened to them both mentally and physically. The killer is kind of interesting in that his motivation is something a lot of people could probably understand and in some cases even back. More psychological horror than straight-up or even extreme horror for me.

What started as a night out during a stressful time turns into an even more horrible and stressful situation. Sam made plans with Sophie, his wife, to have dinner at their favorite restaurant then see a movie across the street. Sam's day runs long following one disaster after the other and he ends up running behind to meet Sophie. Sophie, not wanting to wait at the bar alone she steps outside to wait on her husband. While doing so runs into two men and one is a disturbed individual who grabs her and takes her to the Farm where her worse nightmares are about to come true.

The story ends on a cliffhanger, which I hate, but means I will be reading the next book because I need to know how things come out. Such a great way to keep folks reading.

This one was was so good! I loved the jumping around. You were able to get info from so many different perspectives. This guy was sick and demented. Just because he went through something doesn’t mean it was the same thing every time. This one kept me guessing. Matt does it again.

The Farm: A Novella of Extreme Horror is billed as, right there in the subtitle, extreme horror. After reading the book, it's not extreme in the slightest.

The basic plot of the story is a woman is waiting for her husband for date night, who is running late. Things happen, she winds up being kidnapped by a killer.

The Farm is presented in a series of chapters that alternate between present day, and in the past, with events leading up to why the killer is here, what he's done, and you get a bit of history behind him.

All told, the story itself is fairly decent. It has some good points, nothing too predictable, but nothing unexpected, either. Character development is quick and Shaw provides decent backstory on the main characters, but every other passing character is largely irrelevant, even those that play a semi-important role. For example, I really couldn't care less about the husband.

There are some scenes that go into detail about what the killer's done, how he likes to kill, and they're fairly gory, but I would not call it "extreme horror" in the slightest. Even regular 'horror' is kind of a stretch. I'm partway through the sequel, The Farm 2, and it's already far more graphic and more deserving of an extreme horror subtitle.

At 89 pages, and for the price, it's both a quick and worthwhile read, but it will not leave a lasting impression on you. Go in not expecting too much, and you'll be happy. Go in expecting extreme horror, as I did, and you'll be very disappointed.

Matt Shaw has an incredible talent for extreme horror. He takes his readers into the darkest realms of what humans can and will do to one another. His characters, though sick and demented, are brought to life on the page for one purpose and one purpose only—to scare the living shit out of the reader. If you are an extreme horror fan, you’re going to love this story!

What happens to a man when he’s betrayed by the one he loves? Well, the one thing I am sure of, he’s never quite the same. Most will find a new love, though it will never be like his first, never have the same passion, the same depth, but more than that never will there be the same trust—that is gone forever.
However, there are a few who are hurt so deeply they never recover and when the woman of his dreams is found with her brother! Well you can image the mind snaps to a place he can never return from. This is what happened to Shane Heath. Shane has taken his pain a little farther than his mind no longer being his own. His mind has been taken to a dark place, a place that most people never dare to venture. In the midst of this darkness, Shane has killed repeatedly. Don’t be too hard on him for her see these murders at a cleansing of sort—the cleansing of the immoral, illegal, forbidden act. Although, the people he is killing very well may not entertain the behavior.

I enjoyed my trip to THE FARM. I am a fan of Shaw; although I'm always glad to not be a character in one of his books. The story is extreme. Yes. Matt Shaw is a writer of the extreme. Please do not be overly sensitive when reading this author's books. He does not write with mercy for characters or readers. Do not fall in love with characters that may not be around for very long (That means all of them.). And if a story leaves you hanging with an abrupt ending ... hang on ... by your bloodied fingernails. Shaw's deeply twisted mind is probably already conceiving the next installment and will soon be forcing him to write it for you.

Not a funny farm but a must read

Shaw never disappoints, I am always very excited to grab his new releases and usually put everything else on hold for them. I flew through The Farm and loved every second! Don't be a pig, just go read The Farm. Highly recommend to all fans of modern horror.

Read in one setting!

Great story that parallels two scences happening almost simultaneously. I crazed betrayed lover out to seek his vengeance, but not on his ex lover at first. His first victims are innocent. Or are they?? I little V.C. Andrews going on in this story.

What a fun, extreme read.

There are two scenes in this short book that were pretty extreme, and one scene that seemingly came out of nowhere. I liked this book a lot, and this was my first book of Shaw’s i’ve read.

The ending caught me off guard. I was listening to the audiobook and when the abrupt ending came, I wasn’t prepared for it. I wanted to learn more, like the aftermath. A good writer will leave you wanting more, and luckily Matt Shaw has a sequel for this book published, and I cannot wait to read it!

Overall, this extreme, Saw esque story gets five stars from me.

A while ago, when I got my first kindle, I went looking for new authors to read, and books I can afford. Matt Shaw was the first new writer I discovered during my search. Years later, and I’m reading his fiction once again.

I’m not really bothered by extreme violence and gore, and this offers both. There’s pigs, a wood chipper, and old fashioned firearms doing there thing. I liked the story, even if the psycho killer felt incredibly familiar to all the others from past Shaw stories. The twist ending is somewhat predictable, but doesn’t ruin the story.

At least Shaw is capable of writing. Just enough backstory and stressor to keep going. It set me up to read The Farm 2 (and have my itty bitty black heart dashed to ruin). I resented one small feature (won't go into it), but it was overall good stuff.
