"Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed." - Matthew 8:8
When we, or a family member or friend, are faced with an injury or illness, physical or emotional, our thoughts turn to God in prayer for healing. We want to believe, as the Centurion did, that God will grant healing, but we wonder. And if we as Catholics have doubts, what does this mean to a hurting world, also in need of healing?
In her new book Bringing God's Gift of Mercy to the World, Mary Healy answers to these questions and more --
Is Jesus still healing people today? Are these healings real and do they last? How do we know if God wants us to pray for healing?Isn't God asking us to endure suffering and hardships instead of asking for healing? How can we pray for healing? Can my broken heart be healed as well as my body?
Through the study of Catholic tradition, the lives of the saints, and ordinary people, you'll begin to understand how the message of inward healing is also a message that we as Catholics are empowered to take outward to the world.
Mary Healy is associate professor of Sacred Scripture at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. She is the author of Men and Women Are from Eden: A Study Guide to John Paul II's Theology of the Body and co-editor of three books on biblical interpretation: 'Behind' the Text: History and Biblical Interpretation; Out of Egypt: Biblical Theology and Biblical Interpretation; and The Bible and Epistemology. She is general editor, with Dr. Peter Williamson, of the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture, a new series of commentaries that interpret Scripture from the heart of the Church, and is author of the first volume, The Gospel of Mark.
Dr. Healy has previously taught at the Institute for Pastoral Theology at Ave Maria University and the Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College, and served for several years as Coordinator of Mother of God Community, a lay Catholic community in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She currently serves as chair of the Doctrinal Commission of International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services in Rome. She speaks at retreats and conferences nationally and internationally on topics related to Scripture, the theology of the body, and the spiritual life.
Excellent! I agree 100%! Dr. Healy does an excellent job explaining healing from the theological, historical and scriptural perspective. She truly believes that this is the way of new evangelization. Healing is a gift from Jesus, and He continues to use people today as He did in the age of the Apostles to have a true encounter with Him; this builds faith and builds up the Church.
Mary Healy brings the charisms , especially healing, into our real world. Commonsense guidance, together with examples and stories, inspire us to dive in and begin the journey to become our true nature in Jesus Christ
This book is totally worth it. It gives an introduction to what healing ministry is and it’s foundation in the Scriptures. There are also many stories of healing. Definitely recommend!
“To forgive is not to minimize or deny an offense. Sometimes it’s not okay, and sometimes the person did not mean well. But to forgive means I let go of my right to hold the offense against him or her. It is between that person and God.”
Fantastic. Dr. Healy is very readable and clear, and her work as an exegete is superb. More than that, this book is the fruit of real-life experience, rooted firmly in the Catholic tradition. It is a wake-up call to a greater expectation of what God wishes to do and can do if we allow Him. Great exploration of what redemptive suffering is and is not. If you've ever wondered "why don't miracles happen today?" or "why do we suffer, and what can I do about it?", this is your book. Pairs nicely with "Unbound" by Neal Lozano for a follow up on how to do what she suggests.
It's hard to put my reaction to this treasure of a book into words. Never have I encountered such an informative, yet inspiring work on the gift of healing from a Catholic perspective. As someone who did not grow up in the Charismatic Renewal and who has always been a bit skeptical of miraculous healings, I didn't know what to expect as I began reading. I'm thankful for all that I learned from it and I'd encourage you to give it a read as well.
I read this as part of the Encounter School of Ministry program for first year students. It is a very solid explanation of healing ministry. Dr Mary Healy provides scriptural, theological and historical basis for healing and goes on to give very practical steps. I appreciated the examples she uses through out the text to illustrate her points. Definitely a must read for anyone wanting a solid foundational understanding of healing ministry.
This was such a good read! It gave me so much more detailed knowledge of inner and physical healing than I've previously known. Dr. Mary writes in a way that is easy to comprehend difficult topics. I've learned so much from this book and cleared so many uncertainties and from things that I myself understand(growing up Catholic) but unsure how to give a good explanation to teach someone else.
Found this book inspiring. Raised Catholic, this provided an insight to my faith that is not always emphasized or at least wasn't when I was growing up.
