Boys Who Go Bump in the Night

Rate this book
When boy meets (supernatural) boy.

Buckle up as two queens of British gay romance take you on a whistlestop tour of all things paranormal. Vampires, genies, ghosts, magicians and shifters all get their chance for a bit of boy on boy action, in five erotic stories that span the range from the humorous to the sublime.

Will you seek to make your fortune with magic and ritual, or pin your hopes on a genie’s power to grant wishes? Discover a shifty young man on a Scottish shoreline, meet a hapless garlic farmer who’s been turned into one of the undead--and if you dare to venture into the cellar, gird your loins for a horny ghost!

These stories have all been previously published, but are now available exclusively in this anthology.

JL Merrow is that rare beast, an English person who refuses to drink tea. She read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, where she learned many things, chief amongst which was that she never wanted to see the inside of a lab ever again. Her one regret is that she never mastered the ability of punting one-handed whilst holding a glass of champagne.

She writes across genres, with a preference for contemporary gay romance and the paranormal, and is frequently accused of humour. Her novella Muscling Through was a 2013 EPIC Award finalist, and her novel Slam! won the 2013 Rainbow Award for Best LGBT Romantic Comedy. Her novel Relief Valve is a finalist in the 2015 EPIC Awards.

JL Merrow and I have a new anthology out tomorrow! It will be available on Amazon only, and features five short stories. They've all been previously published, but we wanted to make them available for any readers who missed out the first time around.

Here are the individual story blurbs to whet your appetite:

Leeches and Layabouts by JL Merrow
Would you trust a vampire to grow garlic?
Newly undead Crispin’s desperate to stay in the closet about his condition to protect his garlic farming business. Lifelong layabout Art is just as desperate to stay unemployed.
But Crispin is about to make Art a job offer he can’t refuse!

Something Queer by Josephine Myles
Pete, the trainee barman, is warned about “something queer” down in the cellar, and finds out just how accurate that description is!

Sacrifice by JL Merrow
Rafe’s happy enough to go up to Castlerigg’s ancient stone circle with the good-looking guy he meets in the pub one summer evening. But what he doesn’t know is that Damien’s got more than just sex in mind.

Et in Orcadia by JL Merrow
David, an Englishman living in the Orkney Islands, mourns the loss of his lover Kyle to the sea—and finds a strange young man on the beach who seems to share his grief. Wracked by the suspicion Kyle may have been unfaithful to him, David is drawn despite himself to the mysterious Runi.

One Last Wish by Josephine Myles
Xavier is bored of being a genie, banished to a lamp and forced to fulfill the same old wishes time after time. That is until he meets Scott, an attractive young man who seems determined to spend his wishes in a way Xavier very much enjoys.

Enjoy! xx

Preparing this collection of short paranormal stories - 3 by me, and 2 by the very talented Josephine Myles - has brought back some fond memories of the early days of our respective writing careers (and we've included a short introduction to each story which touches on this).

The stories have all been previously published, but some of them have only been available in magazines so I'm delighted they're getting another chance to be read and enjoyed. They range from humorous to heartrending - but because it's us, they're all about men loving men. :)

Review @ STRW

I go into fan mode each time I see something new by J.L. Merrow, it’s not a news I’m her biggest supporter. So I couldn’t pass this anthology by JL Merrow and Josephine Myles. Plus, I haven’t read anything by Josephine so I was curious.

If you want to give a chance to Boys Who Go Bump in the Night you got a nice anthology made of really short stories, all of them interesting and well done. And well written too. I can’t say a lot about them because they are all so short I don’t want to spoil them for you.

One of the shorter ones is Something Queer by Josephine Myles (3 stars), where Pete, the new barman, meets “something queer” down in the wine cellar. The sexual encounter with a ghost hungry for seed is surreal but so hot. I’m pretty sure Pete wasn’t scared at all.

The funniest one is Leeches and Layabouts by JL Merrow (4 stars), in perfect JL style, the hilarious story of the new vampire Crispin, a garlic grower, one of the best in the South of England. But garlic isn’t a friend of the undead so he absolutely need an assistant. He just need to convince Art and his unbelievable stubbornness in not wanting a job.

Sacrifice by JL Merrow (3 stars) left me a little staggering, the plot was unusual and smart but I think I missed something and I wasn’t able to fully appreciate the mystery aspect and the unexpected ending.

The last two stories are my favorites, for different reasons.

Et in Orcadia by JL Merrow (4 stars) is the story of David who has just lost his lover Kyle and the young Runi. It’s about magic and myth, about loss. I shed some tears cause it was a sad reading but it left me craving for so much more of the main characters together. And the writing was superb and evocative.

One Last Wish by Josephine Myles (4 stars) is the lighter and easier short. A genie and a generous young man meet in a cute and sweet story. It was fresh and it left me with a smile on my face. I need a sequel now!

The COVER ART by Lou Harper is good but not my preferred one. And I’m confused about the wings I’m seeing behind the man on the lower part of the cover. An angel maybe? But there are no angels as characters

This book is a collection of 5 stories, written by JL Merrow (3) and Josephine Myles (2). All of these were previously published in various forms.

I'll review each one separately:

1. Leeches And Layabouts - JL Merrow:
Super cute and super fun story about a garlic farmer who is suddenly a vampire and therefore allergic to garlic, seeking an employee to help with the garlic farming who's not a vampire. In this alternate universe story, humans are aware of vampires and other supernatural creatures, so no drama here about that. The layabout in the title refers to the human, who's a bit of a bum, lazy, and doesn't want to have a job, but then sees the advantage of working for and sexing up a hot vamp. Amusing and clever.

2. Something Queer - Josephine Myles:
A young man enters the cellar at the pub where he works and is molested sexed up by a ghost. All while fully dressed. Disappearing spunk included. Not my favorite of the bunch.

3. Sacrifice - JL Merrow:
I didn't get this story at all. I liked the beginning and what I thought was the middle, which turned out to be the end. Hot virginal sexing in a field surrounded by stones and supernatural powers notwithstanding, I just didn't get it.

4. Et In Orcadia - JL Merrow:
Man who lost his lover to the sea meets another man in a wetsuit, who also knew his dead lover. They seek comfort in each other, and that part was really well done. I had an inkling that the wetsuit wasn't a wetsuit, but that the man was a Selkie, when he wouldn't allow it to be touched. A nice hurt/comfort story that I would have liked to be longer and a bit more exploratory of their relationship.

5. One Last Wish - Josephine Myles:
This was probably my favorite of them, with the 1st one a close second. Stoner rubs a brass lamp, and out pops a genie. A Djinn. Who has to grant him three wishes. As this story is told entirely in the Djinn's POV, it's not only hilarious fun, but also super sweet. Djinn realizes that his new master is nothing like the others, and that by granting the wishes, he gets what he's wanted as well.

Overall, I'd give this collection 3 stars, with some rating higher than others. It was a fun way to spend a few hours.

From the pens of British authors JL Merrow and Josephine Myles, this collection of five short stories, each with a paranormal twist, was an enjoyable way to pass the time. As with all anthologies I preferred some stories to others - but they all bring something to the collection. I have to admit that I love these two authors - but for both of them, I am more of a fan of their longer stories. Short stories bring something different to the table which many prefer. I am though, in general, a longer story gal and so, through no fault of the authors, this did affect my rating.

Leeches and Layabouts by JL Merrow is a humorous take on vampire mythology. It made me chuckle and was perfect to read with a cuppa and some biscuits. Short but different, it worked!

Something Queer by Josephine Myles I really liked - but I wanted it to be a long story. I wanted all these elements in a novel. I don't think thios is a reflection on he writing though, I think it's a reflection on my greedy reader preferences.

Sacrifice by JL Merrow suffered the same fate in my reading hands. I truly enjoyed the elements of this story, but it made me greedy. It made me want this as a full length novel, with all the depth that comes with that. I loved the characters and the story arc, but I wanted more. I don't think it's the author's fault that I am greedy...

Et in Orcadia by JL Merrow had a very melancholy tone to it. It was sad and somewhat haunting, in a way that only takes of the sea can be.

One Last Wish by Josephine Myles was pretty laugh out loud funny from the start. A good way to round up the anthology, it was humorous and romantic.

For fans of anthologies, short stories and tales woith a paranormal twist, I recommend this collection.

3.5 Heart Review by Marieke

This is the first time I’ve ever read anything by Josephine Myles, and the second time for JL Merrow. I’ve heard a lot about how funny Miss Myles stories were, so I was really looking forward to this anthology.

When I started the first story about a vampire (one of my favorite subjects) I was ready for some fun and hotness. Funny it was indeed. Hotness…kinda. But just when I was getting into the story, it was done. I kept turning pages to see where the rest was, but the next story already started. It wasn’t that the ‘chapter’ I got was bad, not at all, but it was…extremely short. Even for an anthology.

The next story was the same, very nicely done, but no more than a chapter. It was so short, I can’t even do a little synopsis of them because that would ruin them.
They were all very funny, though. Except the last one, that one was kind of sad. And why did they have to end with that one, eh? Why I ask you??

To be fair, I did like the writing a lot, and I will definitely be looking up more of both these author’s books.
Maybe to be just a bit of a tease…the story about sex with a ghost was freaking weird, and awesome at the same time. Very hot, (or cold) but strange.

This is a collection of short stories from two of my favourite authors. Despite that I had only read one of these stories previously. All the stories have been released before, mainly in now defunct anthologies with a couple that were only featured in magazines.

This particular collection features mostly supernatural beings and the humans that love them: a garlic loving vampire, a genie, selkies, a ghostly presence.

They are all short but sprinkled with the familiar brand of humour that both these authors have in spades, except for one story that had such a melancholy feel that I had to double check that it was written by the normally irrepressible JL Merrow. That story, Et in Orcadia, actually made me cry.
Of the other four, three are much lighter in tone and one has a dark, slightly threatening vibe.
The stories are so short that I can’t really break things down any further without giving the storylines away.

Needless to say, if you love these authors then you’ll want to buy this anthology. Just have the tissues on standby.

Et In Orcadia by JL Merrow
After losing his lover Kyle at the sea, David keeps meeting a boy at the seashore who seems to be mourning for Kyle as well. Decided to discover is Kyle had a lover, David approaches the boy, Runi, only to find an even darker secret…

4 stars
One last Wish by Josephine Myles
Xavier is a lamp genius used to provide for selfish wishes of his temporary masters… But his new master, Scott, seems to have a very different kind of wishes in his mind
Another cute and sexy short story.
In short, the stories in this collection are as different as enjoyable. Undoubtedly worth your time.

My favourite of these collections so far. There was a mix of light-hearted stories and those more serious in tone, and I wish that the authors had stuck with one or the other, particularly since we go from two funny stories to one that's dark in tone, then one that's angsty, and then end with a humorous one again. With low number of stories, I felt that it made the collection seem inconsistent. Humour really worked for me for the most part, and it didn't feel like one of those badly-crafted erotic "parodies" so popular nowadays. (There was only this one line where a garlic-obsessed character mentions "pecs you could bounce a bulb of garlic off", that I felt went too far, but that's the only one that stuck out in a bad way.) There are some quotes in the status updates, so check out if it will work for you.

4.5*

A delightful collection of five short stories with a fantasy/supernatural theme previously published by JL Merrow and Josephine Myles. The tales are very British in their setting, humour and terminology.

Leeches and Layabouts by JL Merrow had me chuckling away as I read and laughing out loud several times. I'd read Something Queer by Josephine Myles before and enjoyed the hot ghostly action the second time around. Sacrifice by JL Merrow was mysterious and erotic, with an ending I wasn't expecting. Et In Orcadia by JL Merrow was beautifully written and heartbreaking. One Last Wish by Josephine Myles was uplifting and light-hearted fun.

I'm already a fan of Jo's work and will definitely be checking out more of JL Merrow's stories.

This collection of short shorts has some original concepts and some touches of humor along with some naughty scenes. All but one sad story has a happy-for-now rather than a true happily-ever-after ending . A note prefaces each story to tell where it was originally published and a bit about what inspired it or other insider info. The book closes with bios of the authors, synopses of their better known works, and lists of their published works. The collection, while enjoyable is not representative of the authors' other writing especially Myles (and she makes that point in her notes). I hope though that those reading the collection will follow up with both authors' wonderful works which I have read thoroughly and loved.

A Great Group of Stories, Plots and Men!

The variety in these stories is refreshing. A new take on old fables, folk tales, fairy tales, etc.

Each one has a twist that leaves you with a smile and a wish to know what was going to happen in the future.

Keep writing, ladies!
