I think we all breathed a sigh of relief when the detective agreed with Vader to go after the resistance instead. First the detective isn't a bad guy. Second since this is a title about Vader you don't want to see his betrayal exposed. And third poor Aphra got pulled into all of this by Vader, her life is on the line, she lives as long as she is useful to him. Free will isn't there, so you don't want to see her take the fall for Vader either. So end result we didn't have to see any of the people that matter get hurt. This was the end of the first volume. I probably move to the second immediately or after reading a graphic novel. Because I am honestly sick of super hero comics and need a break. Not that Darth Vader is super hero comic, but to read the graphic novel he will have to get shelved as well.
2017 update: I am enjoying Darth Vader series more than the first time I have read it. The story is smart, fast-paced and comsistent with the movies.
Original review (unedited):
Okay, the good thing with issue number 12 is that the arc has concluded, although in a very underwhelming fashion. Everything were too convenient to happen. The story plays out on its own.
The bad thing is, Thanoth emerged as a disappointing red herring after all. I'm quite disappointed how he was built up as someone who is cunningly intelligent and someone who puts his nose to somewhere it is not supposed to.
Vader Down commences after this issue. And Marvel is too evil to publish a standalone issue number one instead of just starting the arc with either the Star Wars series or the Darth Vader comics.

This signals the end of the story arc with Inspector Thanatos. Dr. Arpha is nearly captured by the Empire, but Vader convinces the inspector to go after the Plasma Devils a Rebel group. There is a great scene where as a Y-Wing is attempting to fly away Vader shears its lateral strut off by flinging his lightsaber at it. Great move. The series ends with Dr. Arpha telling Vader some planet where he might be able to find Luke. But, it's a trap and I have to read Darth Vader Down to figure out what happened. Grrr.
Beautiful art, great Vader moments and fun story arc. The first dozen of this comic have been excellent. Hats off to Gillen on crafting a truly wonderful Star Wars tale with the hero of the series- Darth Vader.
This issue was surprisingly underwhelming. I had been looking forward to seeing the Plasma Devil, hoping that they were more aggressive rebels not part of the Rebel Alliance. But then they just turn out to be a generic group of rebels with X-Wings and Y-Wings who are disposed of easily. Now it looks like General Karbin has big plans trying to take down Vader as he is misled to Vrogas Vas, but we know that Vader will survive.

#12 - “You know, one of these days, I hope we're going to get past this Is-he-going-to-murder-me-this-time stage of our relationship.” - Dr Alpha - - -
Finished another series with Olivia-Grace. She is loving these. Doesn't tie-in with The Last Jedi, but her getting to watch that last night really has her Star Wars excited right now.
This was a good series, but I liked the first six-arc better than this one. Not a huge fan of Vader delving into his own pre-Vader past.
Didn't care for Thanoth in the end though either. His sudden "oh dear stupid me" moment was so.... on the nose sit-com'ish and utterly ridiculous that it really hurt the end. I rather had Vader convince him somehow of not chasing after Aphra (perhaps through the Force like Obi-Wan tricking the Stormtroopers.)
I really liked this one. I'm going to say a 4.5, with a round up.
Lord Vader and Doctor Aphra with her droids continue to be so much fun. The General Grievous-inspired Mon Calamari Karbin is really starting to grow on me and get very interesting. Even Inspector Thanoth is pretty damn awesome.
No se si esto termina acá. Existe un claro avance y enriquecimiento de los personajes que vale la pena conocer en mayor profundidad. Me ha gustado bastante.
As Vader and Thanoth close in on Doctor Aphra, the opportunity to destroy a rebel squadron presents itself.
Being the final chapter of this arc, it seemed a little too convenient for me. Thanoth had maneuvered everything to capture Aphra but was conveniently provided with another target - the rebel Plasma Devils. I would love to think Vader has actually orchestrated this location and planned for that distraction, but I just don’t really see it in the story. Perhaps I missed something earlier.
Regardless, this was a pretty fun arc and the constant battle of wills between Vader and Thanoth was fun to watch. Aphra and the droids have also become favorites, so this book is absolutely on the “must read” list.
- I can't believe Vader just sweet talked himself out of his predicament. Lame!
- Thanoth isn't as bright as I thought he was. I'm really disappointed.
- This issue left me with a lot to think about.
- I still think Aphra is going to die.
- I'm SO excited for the Vader Down crossover!! Woo! I kinda wish they had released the Vader Down separately, but I'm still excited for Star Wars and Darth Vader to mingle.
So it looks like Aphra may be off the hook for now. I'm excited to see how this comic and the Star Wars series are going to mash up with the collaborated issues next in line.
Going from strength to strength, and just keeps getting better. Vader gets the outcome he wanted. Sort of anyway!! oops. Better watch out for that Calamari fella!
