Billionaire dragon shifter and Bloodkin Triad member Warrick Voclain is no stranger to power. But when his trusted steward’s beautiful granddaughter—all grown up and successful in her own right—seems to be using illegal magic in his presence, he is thrown for a loop. And the fact that she’s doing so to protect him? Alarming.
Samantha Vine needs to stay under the radar, or her secret gift will get her and her granddad killed. She didn’t intend for her quick visit home to stretch into weeks in Warrick’s company, but anyone striking at Warrick would also hurt her granddad. Only she has the ability to see what’s coming…though she’ll need Warrick’s help to stop it.
The use of such magic is punishable by death, and Warrick’s position on the Triad requires that he adhere to the rule of law. But the attraction between them is electric, stirring his blood and straining his control.
Adversaries wait in every shadow, and the easiest way to strike down a powerful dragon is to go for the heart…in Warrick’s case, Samantha. With fire and blood, he’ll reshape the world into one that’s safe for her. And those that don’t bend to his will? They will burn.

Get lost in a world of danger, secrets, and desire in the newest installment of bestselling author Erin Kellison’s action-packed Dragons of Bloodfire series.
Erin Kellison is the bestselling author of the Indulgence series, the Dragons of Bloodfire series, the Reveler series, and the Shadow series. She writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and fantasy. She loves other worlds and visits them as often as possible via movies and books and her kids' imaginations. When not daydreaming or writing, she's goofing off with her family in sunny Arizona.
I've been a fan of this author since I first discovered her Reveler series, so was very keen when I heard she was bringing out a dragon series. The first book Tempted by Fire was interesting but you know how sometimes you like but don't love a book? Well that's exactly how I felt and yet I had faith in this author and what do you know? Yes with this book she has not only found her stride in the world she has created but crafted a really good story with all sorts of glorious possibilities for future books! See my faith has been rewarded. So briefly we are back in the lives of the Bloodkin ( dragons) and due to recent events there are huge upsets on the horizon . A death means a place has opened up on the all powerful Triad but just who will get that seat is hotly contended . Warrick Voclain may not be the oldest surviving Triad member but as the public face of Bloodkin he's not about to be pushed around, although to be frank he does have to suffer from an interfering mother! Samantha Vine is part of a human family who have served the Voclains faithfully for more years than she can remember . Her grandfather is Warricks steward but he once did something that would mean both he and Samantha, if their secret was discovered would be killed. Samantha treads warily around the Bloodkin but her teenage crush on Warrick has fuelled many a fantasy . When pushed into a corner by Warricks mother she has no choice but to use her magic but it's a slippery slope she now careers down. These are crafty, voracious, bloodthirsty Dragons and I love them! The author has made this reader understand that dragons are older than dirt , probably crawled out of the proverbial mire and truly are the ultimate predator . Yet some have evolved not just to use humans but to treasure and protect them. Warrick would destroy anyone who harmed those who belong to him ( yep possessive dragon!) but he also knows that the Vine family have free will. Samantha has always intruiged him with her sassy attitude but her goal was a life away from Bloodkin and Warrick respects that. Yet here she is , part of his life again and there's something very odd going on. The more time they spend together the more Warrick fears his covetous nature might not let him be able to part with Samantha and the tension between them just keeps rising . Yet it's not rushed, the couple explore each other's depths and when it's time to make a stand boy do they come out fighting! Yes this is a romance but hot diggity, it's such a fabulous journey for Samantha and Warrick . There's a lot of underhand activities going on and the Bloodkin fight dirty but for this reader it's the treachery and betrayal closer to home that resonated the most. This worked as a standalone , had a gripping storyline and fulfilled all my hopes for a dragon romance. Lots going on , so never a dull moment and I'm enjoying the supporting characters and their quirks too so definitely a recommendation from me. I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review
This is actually a superb dragon story! It is the first I have read from this author and I’m suitably impressed and will assuredly continue.
The things that make it stand out are the subtleties the author employs that hold true to Dragon legend. Ms. Kellison allows the dragons to be true to their legendary natures. They hoard not only treasures, but “treasures” of people, experiences, moments and memories. They don’t release those treasures ever (a fact that causes a lot of the tension between Warwick and Samantha). They are also very dangerous and cannot always be trusted with humans. All this makes for some awesome reading because the conflicts read as believable and make sense, rather than just a wildly fantastical story (within a fantastical story).
I also really appreciate the fact that the author develops the relationships as the story progresses. There isn’t an insta-love in sight and ALL the relationships seem real, Warwick and Samantha especially. Their relationship is absolutely pitch-perfect in the way it develops honestly and realistically. The sexy times don’t even consummate ;) until 3/4 of the way through. But, that is exactly what makes their love believable. I love it!
I do kinda wish we could continue with this couple’s story rather than jump to a completely new and different storyline. There is just so much more to explore!
I’m enjoying Kellison’s Bloodkin world. Her dragons are intense, greedy, and damn sexy. Warrick Voclain is young by dragon standards. He is commanding and has gained power and wealth through the usual Bloodkin channels. He is one of the Triad. He is also about to be put into an awkward position where one of his family’s Vine’s is concerned. Something was created behind his back with his unknowing assistance. Bloodkin Law requires him to destroy it. His dragon heart makes him want to hoard it away. His adversaries want it for the advantages that it can be used to gain.
When Samantha Vine returned the dragon castle that she grew up in she had plans of leaving immediately after her cousins wedding. Sammy’s grandfather made it very clear from the time she was born that dragon life was not for her, that it was not safe. Samantha’s secret gift is not so secret to one dragon and that dragon needs her to use her gift to discover who exactly the Voclain enemies are. The one person that Samantha loves most in this world, her grandfather is in constant danger just due to his proximity to Warrick Voclain. She is forced to stay near her grandfather and consequently her teen crush and use the gift she was required to keep secret to protect her family.
It was easy to fall back into the Dragons of Bloodfire world. The couple from the previous book (Tempted by Fire) has a miniscule role in this second installment of the series. The events that took place then are mentioned here in Awakened by Fire but have no consequences to what is going on in here. Things are changing in huge ways to the Triad and Bloodkin Law. The events of both books have seen to that. There’s a teaser at the end of the book about Seduced by Fire, the third book in the series.
Good human / dragon story! Samantha's family has always served dragons! She has the ability to travel back through time! Warrick, the dragon, thinks she belongs to him! Good series so far!
4.5 Stars! Exciting, humorous, action packed dragon story! I enjoyed the first book but I loved the second one. This could be read as a stand alone book. Although it started out a bit slow for me once I hit about 20% the story took off and I couldn't put it down!
This book had everything I look for in a good PNR - characters I love, action, entertaining world building and of course a believable romance. The romance was a slow build but that kept it believable and I so hope to see more Warrick and Samantha in future books.
Warrick is a dragon and not just any dragon but a powerful dragon who is part of the triad (3 dragons who decide on the laws for dragon kind and rule over all other dragons). He isn't warm and fuzzy he is a true dragon and the nature of his dragon is often seen.
"She had to know that it was at the very core of his nature to keep."
"If he had his choice, he'd find a cave, deep and dark, and curl up with her there. But that was irrational by human standards."
"No one" his voice didn't sound remotely human, but still she stood looking down at him,her muscles locked--"touches what is mine. No one. Or I will kill them. I'm afraid of how much I'll like it. I know I won't care enough to stop. I'm terrified of what I'll lose."
Although Warrick was a dominant dragon, Samantha was a force on her own and I enjoyed the idea and plot of a tempest. She had always had a crush on Warrick but she also understood exactly what he was and there were some sweet moments between the two of them and some touching moments as well.
"She looked at Warrick, who'd managed to put his arm on the sofa behind her -- what a dorky and sweet move for such a powerful man"
"I thought for a while that you didn't want something to happen between us." He'd intended to change her mind. "I didn't know you were lonely." "I didn't know I was either."
But the biggest surprise was the humor throughout the book that made me smile and chuckle.
"I'm going to marry her." Eventually. In ayear, ten, twenty...it didn't matter when. The details would come with time. "M-M-Marry?" It was strange how his mother could pitch a dragon's low growl so very high. "She doesn't know. And you won't tell her." He smiled to himself. "I'm going to be her boyfriend for a while." "Do you hear yourself?" You're a hundred and forty. A member of the Bloodkin Triad. Not a...a..boy."
"Are you going to eat him?" Samantha asked. "I recall you said there's no Bloodkin law against it." Warrick struggled for a moment, but had to tell her the truth. "Yes." "Can I watch?" Samantha added. Warrick laughed, and it echoed through the cavern. She kept surprising him. "You're not eating him," his mother said, still irritated. "He's my steward," she continued. "I get to eat him." "Oh Peggy," Lady Voclain called. "I think I'm going to ruin this dress. Please have a robe waiting for me in the sitting room."
I loved Warrick and Samantha together. She was a perfect fit for him and she stood next to him her ability allowing her to be on equal footing with dragons. When the book was finished I just wanted more of Warrick and Samantha.
"I'm Warrick Voclain. And you will stay by my side until the stars fall from the sky." There was no reasoning with him.
It was a wonderful story and while it had a solid ending the overall plot will continue on in the next book and I can't wait to see how things shake out. I'm looking forward to Erin's next dragon book! If you're a fan of PNR, dragons or an entertaining, humorous romance with an Alpha male than I recommend reading Awakened by Fire!
Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Don't expect a single dull moment - as there are none!
OMG I just saw Warrick Voclain on 5th Ave! #DragonSighting #DragonInMyPants #Dragons #RuinedForAllOtherMen.
AWAKENED BY FIRE by Erin Kellison is the second fantastic installment in the author's Dragons of Bloodfire series and my favorite of the series so far! I laughed, swooned and even trembled as I turned the pages at stressful points. There were intense, action-packed fights, cute dialogue and yummy adult lovefests! In addition, I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with Thane and Emerson from the first book!
This was the story of Warrick Voclain, a sexy billionaire dragon shifter and Bloodkin Triad member, and Samantha Vince, the granddaughter of Warrick's long-time trusted steward. Warrick is hot, hot, hot and his public appearances set off tweet storms as evidenced by the opening quote to this review.
As this tale begins, Samantha has returned home for a family wedding but, what was meant as a short trip, quickly becomes much longer as Warrick's mother demands that Samantha use her secret special gifts to protect her son. However, if Samantha's forbidden magic is exposed while finding the bad guys targeting Warrick, the rules require that she be killed. Warrick is actually one of those tasked with enforcing that rule. Now, Samantha must walk a fine line. She worries about her beloved grandfather suffering consequences if she's caught and about losing independence she's fought so hard for. She must stay under everyone's radar and somehow keep from succumbing to the hot chemistry between her and the powerful dragon that comes to the fore as they chase down leads and threats. Meanwhile, Warrick has never felt this way about a human before and dragons are possessive to the extreme.
Erin is one of my favorite authors. I loved this story - and, great news (!!!!), there's no cliffhanger! This book works well as a standalone, if that is your preference. I bet once you read this story, you'll fall under the author's spell and want to read the first book, too. I can't wait for the next book - SEDUCED BY FIRE! There's a short preview of SEDUCED BY FIRE at the end of this read and, believe me, it will stoke your craving for the next book now! I highly recommend AWAKENED BY FIRE to anyone who enjoys steamy paranormal reads packed with loads of magic and thrills! Just don't expect a single dull moment - as there are none!
Her secret gift will get her and her grandfather killed, so Samantha Vine needs to stay under the radar but with someone striking at Warrick, her quick trip home, stretches into weeks because only she has the ability to stop it in this splendid paranormal romance.
As a dragon shifter and Bloodkin Triad member, Warrick Voclain is no stranger to power but he’s thrown for a loop when his steward’s granddaughter whose all grown up seems to be using illegal magic and the readers can’t help but become ensnared by the intrigue and the thrills as Warrick discovers that he’ll reshape the world for her with fire and blood. These strong characters demand your attention while they fight their enemies and struggle with their strong desires for each other, with sizzling chemistry and explosive fireworks spicing up this thrilling story as Samantha and Warrick fight their attraction for various personal reasons, the kind that could get someone killed in this fast paced, smooth flowing plot that thrills readers with lots of suspense, excitement and romance.
Expectation and tension catch readers in their web from the very beginning as Samantha travels home and the readers realize she has a secret that could get her and her grandfather killed and the story continues to draw the readers in as the excitement escalates when someone starts attacking Warrick and by extension sets their sights on Samantha. There is never a dull moment in this well written story what with quite a few unexpected twists, lots of heart pounding excitement and such a thrilling romance to keep readers glued to the pages and the author uses vivid details to make sure you can picture each and every second of it.
What an exhilarating ride, Warrick and Samantha’s story had me locked in from beginning to end and I wasn’t ready for it to end and the battle with Warrick’s enemies was one spectacular show that rocked my world. This fascinating series as a whole has many interesting elements that add flair to the story and ensures that I want more so I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
I liked the characters and loved the way the romance played out. It's VERY easy for a romance involving an immortal being falling for a mortal he saw grow up from an infant to turn creepy and skevy but (likely due to the confident and independent heroine and her ability to match the hero), it was sweet and cute.
OMG, I loved this story! It sucked me right in, and I loved disappearing into it.
Samantha Vine has a secret. A secret that if found out could get her killed. She is a Tempus and can time travel. This isn’t something that just anyone can do, not even dragons even though time is always on their sides. Being a Tempus is dangerous to dragons and so if her ability is discovered, her grandfather’s dragon and Bloodkin Triad member, Warrick Voclain must by law kill her, and her grandfather for hiding her ability.
Warrick Voclain has the greatest trust in his Vine family of humans. They are his family and his greatest assets. He would destroy anyone who even tried to harm one of them so when he discovers betrayal among them, he is torn as to what to do. When he discovers who has also been hiding the secret of a Tempus, he must figure out a solution and before others discover it and those against him try once more to destroy him.
Samantha becomes his protector and much more, as the unrequited feelings she has had for Warrick since her teen years become problematic. Dragons don’t fall in love with humans…or do they?
AWAKENED BY FIRE, book two in the Dragons of Bloodfire series by Erin Kellison hits a home run when it comes to depth of story, action, intrigue, and romance. I love the idea of time travel and Erin uses it fabulously in this story about the bloodthirsty world of the Bloodkin Triad of which Warrick is a member and Samantha is trying to distance herself so that none will discover that dragon blood created a Tempus in her. Being a Tempus, means she can move through time, which could potentially make her a dangerous threat to dragons. However, she becomes Warrick’s greatest asset and the woman he’s willing to risk everything for to protect, save, and call his own.
I’m totally in love with this series and can’t wait to see what happens next. Each one so far is a standalone read with no cliffhangers but I highly advise reading TEMPTED BY FIRE first, because it gives us a great look at the world of the Bloodkin dragons.
I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys the fantasy of dragons and dragon worlds to read AWAKENED BY FIRE by Erin Kellison. It’s extraordinary, character-driven, action-packed, exciting, intriguing, and I guarantee it will have you cheering for Samantha and Warrick. You might even get a bit of a kick out of Warrick’s mother who is a tad overbearing but has a good heart. Dragons are the ultimate in fantasy and Erin rocks their world like an expert. You'll almost believe they are real.
***purchased for my own personal reading but sharing my honest and unscripted review.
This is the second book to the Dragons of Bloodfire series and author Erin Kellison continues to hold the reader enthralled as she weaves a story of hidden secrets that if found out would lead to death for Samantha and her grandfather. I love how fearless Samantha is with protecting her grandfather and Warrick even when she just wants to run and hide from Warrick and his mother by going back to her business and home.
This story tells of a long friendship between Samantha and Brandon which turns awkward over time. It deals with secrets that have been hidden for Samantha's whole life that come out. It speaks about compassion and anger at the same time and consequences of poor decisions. But more important it speaks about how loving someone and protecting them can also cause a loss of respect and trust in others that you love as well.
The authors words so eloquently speak of all the feelings involved in these secrets. Samantha's gift adds to a large part of this story and it is so believable that I felt that I was her walking through all her experiences as she fought to keep Warrick alive.
Warrick seemed so standoffish that it took me a while to warm up to him. I found his dedication to protecting those under his care admirable and as he got to spend more time with Samantha I quickly warmed up to him. His strategic personality is balanced by his need to protect and it shows throughout the book enhancing his character.
No book is without malice or contention and this book is full of it with really, really dynamic fighting between dragons.
I loved this book and give it 4 STARS for keeping me up all night to finish reading it. I bet you want to read it and see what all the fighting is about.
Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle:
Erin captivates once again with her latest installment of the Dragons of Bloodfire series!
Samantha Vine left the world of dragons to pursue her independence and stay off the radar, but one step back on Voclain property and her world is changed forever. Her secret is out, she's basically being blackmailed, and to top it all off, she has to spend every day with the dragon who sets her heart ablaze.
Warrick has his hands full being lord of the Reds and trying to find a replacement for Godric Tredan on the Council. Even though he's probably the most modern of dragons alive--despite being older than dirt--he finds himself embroiled in the fallout of plots from eons ago. And it's all compounded by the interference of his steward and his steward's granddaughter, the one woman Warrick knows he should only protect, but can't help but desire above all others.
Awakened by Fire delivers a twist-filled miasma of wonderfulness full of danger, deceit, revenge, and passion, perfectly balanced with light-hearted dialogue and captivating characters that you won't want to leave when the last page is turned.
If you're a dragon shifter fan, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is book #2 of the series (book #1 is Tempted by Fire), but stands perfectly well on its own.
I've followed Erin's journey since her very first book, Shadow Bound. And her Reveler series has grabbed (and kept) a place in my top 5 favorite series of all time list. But this...this book just might be my favorite of Erin's to-date!

Samantha the Tempest and Warrick the big bad dragon. Warrick is the youngest of the triad that makes dragon law. Only 152 years ; ) Samantha is the granddaughter of his Valet, and had a serious crush on him when she was a teen. But now she is a grown woman with her own successful programming business. She is also a woman with a deadly secret that she's had to live with for her whole life. When she comes home to visit, things spin out of control. There are quite a few people stirring the pot and one of them (or maybe even someone else) is out to kill Warrick. Samantha finds herself sucked into helping guard his back with her secret power. Sure she's over her crush on him... maybe. The intrigue is great and the author is very talented at keeping the cultural differences (dragon vs human) a part of the story. Like the first story the action is limited but tight and very suspenseful. More world building is revealed and there's a nice cameo with the MCs from the first book. Warrick, being a dragon, knows what he wants and pursues it, but with infinite patience. And what he finds he wants, is Sammy.
Safe read, and the audio reader, Fleet Cooper, was fantastic.
Dragons, man. Dragons. They're bloodthirsty and when they decide to go for something, they go after it. Like, hardcore. HARDCORE.
And when they realize they might have feelings for the special someone who's been hanging around? ALL BETS ARE OFF. Even for members of the Triad.
So. Still loving this world. Dragon shifters make me happy. They're just so...I don't know. Intense. Focused. Dark and broody. Warrick certainly comes across as all those. The power he has makes him formidable. The fact Samantha's very existence puts his family line at risk should have been a deal breaker for them. It really should have. BUT...it isn't.
Which is when the fun really starts happening. *finger guns*
Loving the world, digging the characters, wouldn't mind a whole lot more of these guys. Because dragons.
Story and narration not nearly as good as the first book. (audible review)
Hmm. Kind of a bummer. This book was not nearly as good as the first book, Tempted by Fire. And the narrator switch did not help either. I was so bummed when I saw the narrator was different.
The story line and plot were okay. I thought the gift that Samantha had was interesting enough. But her character was a bit too wimpy for me. Warrick was pretty decent, I liked him well enough. There was a lot more inner dialogue than there was actual dialogue between the two. The story line and plot was just meh and it could have been better. It seemed to be a bit scattered.
As for the narration, not the best. The voices he used for the main characters was fine. but the other characters in the book voices were too high pitched scratchy and all of them sounded old. Just not good at all. The narration did not help this book and actually made it a bit worse.
Samantha Vine has been keeping a secret, one no dragon shifters can find out. It has made life difficult as her grandfather is the steward to Bloodkin Triad member Warrick Volcain, when she was younger she could chalk up her behavior by secretly crushing on Warrick, now though she wants to protect him.
Warrick is trying to figure out why Samantha is using magic on him and what he discovers changes everything. Dragons covet, but Samantha is an independent woman who doesn't follow the rules. Unmasking a betrayal though is the priority before Warrick can unravel his feelings for Samantha.
Highly entertaining. This is such a fantastic series, it gets better and better. Warrick is intense and he finds some humor entertaining Samantha. Samantha is torn though with her wants and what should be, causing her to try and push Warrick in another direction. Excellent read.
Quite an interesting twist on the Tempus concept. For me, Warrick and Samantha's romance was a little slow to bloom but so much was happening in their lives I guess Warrick's attention was a little divided. Could also be that being a dragon he came to conclusions much slower than us humans. :oD Very happy to see Thane and Emerson too. I hope we get to see more of all these characters in future books as well. Overall a very exciting and thrill-filled read.
3.5 Goodreads; 4 Amazon. My 1st by author. Original elements, appealing leads, well-written.
First of all, you don't need to have read book 1 to enjoy this book. Thane Ealdian and his human-raised bride appear only in the end, but we're told all we need to know about the changes in the Triad Warrick is dealing with. The world is interesting, with Bloodkin being wealthy, dangerous rulers/celebrities, not unlike Nalini Singh's angels, but the vampires, while Bloodkin-created, are quite different: as pitiable as they are creepy.
It's not common in modern romances for the heroine to be of the servant class, but the Vine family has proudly been sworn for generations to the Voclain red dragons. Samantha has of necessity (since her existence is a crime punishable by death) struck out on her own, and succeeded as an app designer. However, she still has loyalty and respect (if not always proper humility on her tongue) for a Bloodkin family that treats their servitors fairly and well, unlike some others. Her misty time-walking ability is well-depicted, with risks and limitations.
Warrick is an intriguing mix. He's got draconic power and authority, and all of that nature's possessive instincts and fury, but he cares about his humans, and comes to unexpectedly feel even more for Samantha. He tries to figure out a compromise between protective possession and letting her fulfill her full dreams and potential. He also has a complex relationship with his mother, who's no pushover herself. In another unusual touch, this "good guy" is part of the danger in the plot: an ascendant dragon is deadly, losing much of their human-form reason and control. The secret in his past which haunts him is shocking, but apparently not unheard-of among Bloodkin.
The climax is exciting, and the book ends with satisfying resolution on the personal and immediate-action front. There are still questions not fully answered, re. the identity of the attacker due for half-mad ancient Xanthippe's vengeance. Given the teaser for book 3 (starting at 95%) , I gather the obvious answer is not the right one. I will definitely be reading more of this series, and finding out.
P.S. If you're someone looking at my Goodreads reviews and wondering why this should-be-quick read took me several days more than usual, I picked up something else (a physical library book that had to go back) when I'd barely started this. Don't read anything negative into it.
Samatha Vine is from a Bloodkin-sworn family of dragon retainers and servants that goes back generations. She's been hidden from them by her grandfather, the Voclain Dragon steward, due to one small problem - She's a Tempus, a time traveling human created by in utero exposure to dragon blood. Dragons exterminate her kind as abominations, and execute the dragon whose blood creates one. Warrick Voclain, has of his clan, discovers her, and belt4edly, her talent, at the same time he finds himself fallings in love with her. Samantha knows her days are numbered - she'll lose his love, and her life, when her nature is revealed. Except... There's nothing dragons love better than rare treasures, and Warrick sees Sam as the treasure she is. Nobody and nothing comes between a dragon and his treasure! The conflict is on. Will Sam win the fight for her life? And will she keep her dragon lover? Great world-building, complex and suspenseful plotting, memorable characters, and a fire-hot romance are the highlights of this fine addition to the Dragons of Bloodfire series
So, as mentioned in my review of the first book in this series, I grabbed all three on sale--in both Kindle and Audible versions. This book went deeper into the Bloodkin world building and introduced more dragons, including Warrick Voclain, a member of the ruling Triad. The story focuses more on Warrick's personal situation--his mother and their "people," the loyal retainers who have sworn blood oath and served the Voclains for generations. Samantha Vine is the exception. She was always made to feel...separate and her grandfather sent her away--granted to college and then to create her own app company (she's a "code monkey"). She returns for her cousin's wedding and things escalate. There's a lot of action but if I reveal to much, I get into spoiler territory. I like Warrick and I link Samantha and the two of them together are inflammatory. (Pun only slightly intended. Fleet Cooper does a good job with Warrick and the male characters, a little less so with the females. That's okay. I like his voice. I enjoyed this book.
I received this eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was in no way compensated for this review.
Awakened by Fire is Erin Kellison’s second book in the Dragons of Bloodfire series and I was ecstatic to read yet another book after the awesomeness of the first one. Though it has been a long while since I read that one, I think I might have forgotten some details. What made it even harder to get into this one at first was that we are brought a new cast of characters. I can’t remember if they were mentioned in the first one, so it felt like a whole new start and that was a little disorienting for awhile, but it didn’t last that long because I was soon absorbed into the new story!
Samantha returns to her home to visit her grandfather who just so happens to be a steward to a very powerful dragon family. His “master” is Warrick Voclain, the dragon that Samantha crushed on during her early years. Her grandfather raised her after her mother died. There’s some more backstory to that, but because it leads to spoiler territory, I’m avoiding going into details. Samantha has worked hard in life and she now has her own budding company that she runs with two friends designing apps. Their photo app is really starting to take off too. But when family obligation beckons, Samantha returns home to be in her cousin’s wedding, a dragon wedding on top of it all. Her cousin is human but is marrying a dragon and is a part of a dragon family. Just a few details to give you an idea of the chaos about to ensue!
Soon enough Samantha finds herself staying longer than necessary when someone is clearly gunning for the people she cares about. She will have to use her special gift in order to figure out who’s the bad guy. Samantha’s talents lie in Time. She’s able to go back in time, but she’s not able to really interact or interfere, she’s more so just there and able to witness things; which becomes incredibly helpful on the road ahead.
Then there’s Warrick, the dragon whose life just might in danger. And Samantha is obligated to help, since her grandfather could be effected too by being his steward.
There was plenty of action in this one, what with all the multiple threats against Warrick, her grandfather, and ever herself since she’s with them most of the time. It made for a thrilling read! There’s also a good deal of dragon politics to get into, which for the most part were pretty easy to get through. Politics has never been something I could understand, still don’t really! LOL! But at least in fiction, it makes sense!
All the while of chasing down leads and possible threats, Samantha and Warrick start to grow closer to one another. I’m really digging these “adult” dragon books I’ve been reading! The YA ones are still awesome too, but with the adult ones, you get the sense of who the dragons really are and most of them are very protective of their hoards. Then comes the heroine and soon enough we start to see the dragon falling for her and needing her in his life. It might seem a little possessive in some ways, but the way Erin executes it, it seems rather romantic in a way. For one, it’s not a one-sided attraction, and secondly, the heroine is usually pretty independent and strong on her own and the dragon dude (since they’ve all been dudes so far) has to really work at winning her heart! And I always enjoy that!
There’s an ever present of danger in this book, which really antes up the momentum of pacing. People are always in danger it seems and then soon the danger is directed at Samantha. So there’s hardly ever a dull moment. I really liked this one, but then at the same time, I was struggling to see how it was supposed to connect to the first book, other than dragons still being among us and having their own set of politics. And then finally…in the last chapter, epilogue really, we get that connection! And I loved it! I finally felt like we had some solid ground beneath us. There might have been earlier name drops, but again, poor memory from reading too much (ha!) makes it hard to remember all the little details like names and such. So maybe name drops happened and I was left unaware. But no matter. We have that connection in this last little piece of the book and it definitely made up for my missing Thane and Emerson.
And I did something I never do before, I read the sampler of what’s to come next time, just to see what direction we’re headed in for I got the feeling it would be with yet another new cast of characters. And it is! But isn’t! Yes, we haven’t formally met them but we have gotten a name drop of sorts from this book regarding them. It does make it a little hard to dive back in, I totally enjoyed Erin’s Reveler series where we kind of focused on the same group of people. There would always be connections, like book one had couple A and introduced you to the who would turn into couple B, then in book two you see couple B and foundation is laid for couple C. See where I’m going with this? We don’t really have that clear-cut introduction thing going down just yet here. We do in a small sense, but not as well as Erin’s last series. But hopefully things will pick up and with my meticulous notes I’ve taken, I will remember things better. We shall see.
If you’re a dragon loving reader and have been itching for an “adult” dragon read, then I highly recommend checking out this new series by Erin Kellison! Best yet, we’re just getting started, as this is book 2, so it’s the perfect time to dive into a new series!
Overall Rating 3.75/5 stars—just nearly a 4 but a little off the top since my memory struggled to grasp onto these new characters. I was legit trying to remember if Warrick or Samantha made an appearance in the first book and couldn’t get myself focused on the story in the now as much as I tried. Since I now have an idea of how this series will roll, hopefully my transition to the next book will be a bit more smooth!
This was even better than book one in this series. While book one was good and I enjoyed the world building, the general plot wasn’t entirely original for me (I.e. person in foster care finds out they have secret powers). This was awesome. I really enjoyed learning about the culture and social nuances of the families that serve the Bloodkin. It really is a whole new world in there. And the author developed it WELL.
I always enjoy a book that makes me actually laugh and smile and there were some good points in here that I did that.
I’ll leave you with my favorite quote:
“I’m mortal. I could die any day.” Brandon had almost killed her. Her parents had died young. Her grandfather would have died yesterday. “I’m Warrick Voclain. And you will stay by my side until the stars fall from the sky.”
