Loved this book, read it in one day. It was a fun and easy read, with lots of humor, sarcasm, and totally loveable characters. It was fast paced throughout the entire book, with a tiny bit of romance and lots of action at the end. Mixed with one of my favorite subjects, mythic beings, it was the perfect recipe for a brain candy book. I know I'll be wanting to read this again some day.

Fast Paced. Enticing. Action Packed and Suspenseful

Oh.My.Poor.Heart.
Okay. How am I supposed to start this review ? I mean, I’m still a bit bedazzled by what I’ve read. It has been a while since I last read a book this great – okay, not that much, but still.

This is my first encounter with BJ’s writings and I must say that she is something. I can now declare myself her fan.
The book is very well written and the characters are strongly developed. It is full of surprises and every page promises to keep you on edge and sometimes even drive your heart over the cliff without mercy.
At first I didn’t know what to make of it, but on the course of it, I fell into the story. I could hardly get myself to turn off my e-reader. That’s how good this book is and how bad it got a hold of me.

It all begins after an archeology professor and his students dig up the old remains of The Fallen Angels, that are being buried somewhere in the Badlands. From there, to the point where they are being executed with cold blood by Azazel’s Hybrids isn’t long. They are not the typical Hybrids, they are some kind of modern ones since they all dress up only in black leather.

Then, we have Skyy a “girl with wings” as she refers to herself who carried on living for centuries wondering what her sole purpose on this Earth is. Never being able to go out in the world in daylight cause of her wings - she finds herself painting most of the time in the comfort of her trailer in the middle of nowhere - and after many failed suicide attempts she decides to leave it the way it is. She also made friends with a human, a great guy named Sean, in fact they saved each other – but she does not know that, yet.
As days go by, something extremely unexpected happens at her trailer. Two of Azazel’s associates ambush Skyy and she struggles to beat them both in an unfair battle, until Lilith and her handsome brother, Dorian appear out of nowhere and help her. Standing there dumbfounded by the appearance of the two and Azazel’s accomplices she begins to ask herself various questions. She is not to give up that easily until she doesn’t get her questions answered.

Lilith doesn’t like her in the least, which leads them to fight every time they come across each other’s path. Looks like Skyy is more than just a girl with wings or a freak, she is the main key that can awaken The Fallen. But in order for that to happen, Azazel needs to get his hands on the spear that Skyy’s mom had so well hidden.

Sean wants to tag along with them at the burial site, and after a few close arguments between the four of them, they take off to the Badlands, where they run into Sam. The apparently teenage boy tells them what happened and afterwards they settle for a camp a few feet away from the burial site.
It’s not long before Raja, Azazel’s right hand shows himself, and puts out an ultimatum for the spear. An ultimatum that sets Skyy on edge, fearing for the ones she cares about – mostly Sean and Sam. The battle between good and bad is not far itself either and it has everyone sitting on pins and needles.

Fighting off for a human cause without knowing what you really are, what you were brought into this world for and how strong you can be until the very last moment, can drive you mad and it can distract you from the present.
If Skyy will stop Azazel from raising The Fallen and bring on the extinction of the human race, remains to be seen.

THIS BOOK IS EPIC AND I NEED THE SEQUEL !!

Wow. Just. Wow. B.J. Sheldon sucked me right in and pulled me along a rapid-fire fantasy world that settles well into the paranormal/angel niche and yet transcends the genre. This spellbinding Y.A. novel touches on the human condition of finding your purpose, facing loss and grief, and overcoming monumentally overwhelming challenges.

Every novel has minor issues which get missed or subjective linguistic and grammatical preferences not accounted for in the grueling writing and editing processes. Hear the Crickets is engrossing enough that you don't see them unless you're looking really, really hard for flaws in this one, or are an editor by trade.

Sheldon's strong, unique, exciting story and well crafted characters shine. Her fight scenes are done well and her in-between moments are emotionally rich and contemplative. The first person narrative is natural and insightful.

Bravo, can't wait for #2!

My Thoughts:

After meeting BJ Sheldon in person and experiencing her warm, inspiring personality, I could not wait to finally devour one of her novels. When I was contacted by her publisher seeking review for her upcoming release, Hear the Crickets, I jumped a the opportunity. After reading the synopsis I was confident this would definitely be right up my alley. As anyone who follows my posts regularly will know, I'm a huge fan of this trope and can never get enough. Could Sheldon hold her own against some of the greatest writers of our generation?

Yes. Beautifully.

In true One Guy's Guide to Good Reads fashion, I'll get my few negative critiques out of the way first.

I sat on this review for some time, because I really didn't know how best to put my thoughts on my two biggest criticism into words. So I'll just throw them out here on the table and then rave later. First off, there were a few lulls in the book. Nothing bad, just quite a bit of down time in between action scenes. Sheldon definitely feels the dead zones with lots of thoughts and reflection, but it was odd pacing for me as a reader to see so many high octane scenes followed by chapters of no action. Not bad, just unexpected for a novel of this particular genre.

Second, I really did not care for the main character. Skyy was not likable, nor relatable for me in almost any way. I personally found her to be pushy, rude, and extremely selfish, with very little regard for those who love and care for her. In one aspect I almost believe that Sheldon wrote Skyy in this fashion deliberately. As so the reader can see the redemption of the character. And in a way, I definitely saw the redemption, but it still wasn't enough for me to ultimately care about her eternal well-being. I loved the supporting cast (we'll discuss that later), but I have to say that it was difficult at times to read a story in which you don't care for the main character. This could just be an 'Ethan-thing' but it did hinder my reading experience slightly.

Okay we're done with the negatives, let's rave!

So when it comes to the plot of Hear the Crickets, I was really intrigued. I have read quite a few angel/demon/watcher-esque novels as they are one of my favorite tropes, but this one definitely stood on its' own and stood out. Sheldon does an incredible job taking the legends and twisting them to fit her own version of the story. It's both memorable and intriguing. Research clearly went into this read and this blogger definitely appreciated the attention to detail that Sheldon put into this novel. Especially regarding the archaeology and geology aspect of the story, Sheldon did an incredible job with the science and the historical aspect of Hear the Crickets. As a detail-oriented reader, that was really noteworthy for me. (That being said, I would have LOVED to see more of the historical settings that Sheldon briefly mentioned in the novel. Maybe more of that in coming sequels?) The plot was full of twists and some gripping backstories for our characters that I didn't see coming.

And the ending?! You best believe that this guy is ready for the sequel, I NEED to know what happens next.

I've already expressed my thoughts on Skyy, the main character in the novel, but haven't touched on the others. While I may not have cared for Skyy, I absolutely loved the rest of the cast. Each character was written to their full potentials, each had an emotional past and an important role to play in the plot. It was really interesting to see where some of the most... obscure... characters fit into the story. My favorite character, by far, was that of Skyy's human-best friend, Sean. Sean is nerdy, compassionate, and loyal to a fault. He loves and cares for Skyy unconditionally, even though she is a pretty rough friend to have at times. I think Sean is a character than many readers will be able to relate to. His role in the story for me was one of the most heart-wrenching and I really loved the was Sheldon utilized his character. Love Dorian and frienemy Lillith proved to be two more extremely well-rounded characters that I loved reading from.

This novel really features some absolutely incredible themes as well. Sheldon had me catching the feels on more than one occasion. Covering powerful subjects such as depression, acceptance, love, destiny, life, death, and family, Sheldon proves that life is so much more than just an adventure from point A to B. I'm not kidding, I caught some major feels when reading this one.

Sheldon has crafted an elegant tale full of spirit, reflection, and redemption; Hear the Crickets is not to be missed. A powerful beginning to a series with massive potential, add this one to your TBR today!

As you can see, I had a couple of big critiques for Hear the Crickets, but in the end, it was a read that I did thoroughly enjoy. I can't wait for more from Sheldon and this series. I am granting Hear the Crickets a well-deserved 4-star review. A highly recommended read for all readers YA and up. Don't miss out on this new series from Sheldon and Whiskey Creek Press!

Skyy has tried many times to end it all... to finally be free of a life spent in hiding. Unfortunately, in addition to wings, she's immortal. So, with the exception of one friend, she secludes herself from the world.

Until one day, strangers show up and everything changes.

Now, she'll need to embrace her strength and face the most intense battle of her life. All to save the world... a world's she's been avoiding.

I love a unique paranormal, and I hadn't read anything like this one. But at the end of the day, what makes a book truly memorable for me is the emotional connection. Skyy dug her way into my heart. I understood intimately, thanks to awesome character development, why she wanted to end it. But I desperately wanted for her to find her place and someone to love her.

It's not often I need kleenex for a paranormal read, but I did. Take my advice: have tissues nearby. Even with all the action, there are some rich emotional scenes between various characters who are facing possible death while yearning for human connection... for something to make it all worthwhile.

I can't say enough about the beauty of this book... in its uniqueness, its emotional intensity, and its fearlessness. A real winner.

Note: I worked on early edits on this book through Indie Books Gone Wild. A positive review was not requested or guaranteed; the opinions expressed are my own.

I really enjoyed this book! It was unusual and original. Not only did I enjoy it, I was able to achieve a miracle and get my husband to listen to it. He said it was one of the best books he's ever enjoyed, and he is picky. We are both looking forward to the sequel. Five glittery stars.

This is one of my favorite books… When I originally started reading it I was very skeptical and didn't think I would like it, even after I read the little summary on the back of the book but I still gave it a chance and I was so drawn into the main character "Sky". I wanted to know just as much about her as she wanted to know. I finish this book very quickly and was so irritated by the fact that book 2 hadn't been published yet.

There's beauty in the title and a beautiful simplicity in the cover. Written upon the pages is a wonderful and strong mythology told through the story of Skyy, a beautiful freak with wings. Skyy has always felt apart from the rest of the world, when you're the only one you know with wings, I think that's bound to happen. But even if the rest of us don't have wings that others can see, I think we have something that has made us at one time or another feel like a freak. These things are our invisible wings. Because of this, I think anyone could relate to Skyy. Her wit and caring (sometimes while pretending not to care) don't hurt, making her an untraditional hero. I thought she was awesome.

With a mostly lonely existence, I was grateful that she had a best friend in Sean, even though she's not always that good of a friend to him. When you've only had one friend, I can understand this. Too often I've seen the comic book loving best friend be too much of a side character, but BJ Sheldon fully fleshes him out so he can stand on his own. He definitely surprised me in a number of places, but I'm not going to tell you because *spoilers*. Without him, Skyy would have been a completely different character, and I'm not sure I would have liked her. Dorian and his twin Lillith are great characters too. Complete opposites of one another, they were fun to watch. They really turned things on their heads for Skyy, and upon their introduction, life for Skyy got way interesting in a number of facets. I totally shipped Dorian and Skyy. So adorable together.

I also loved the Badlands setting, it's not a place I see often enough in books, and the smattering of archaeology really helped to draw me in at the beginning. What a clever plot point.

Hear the Crickets moves at a great pace with a breadcrumb trail that Sheldon makes sure to come back to, leaving me feeling fulfilled by the end. Sometimes those crumbs are more like giant pieces of cake, and those kept me turning the pages, needing to find out more. This book is one sitting read. You aren't going to want to put it down.

BJ Sheldon writes books that bring me to tears. They are that good. She writes characters that you invest in to the point that you cry if/when things happen to them. But her strength lies in gutting me then coming back to pick up the pieces. I don't know if I've fully recovered. I eagerly await the next book in the series.

For over three hundred years, Skyy has tried to kill herself countless times, but when you are immortal, it doesn’t seem to work out so well. Having to hide herself away all of these years due to the wings sprouting out of her back, Skyy has only one friend, Sean, a human she trusts with her secret and her life. After seeing a vision of a giant skeleton with wings, Skyy rushes to paint what she had seen inside her mind before Sean arrives at her studio. Moments later, five strangers have arrive to kill her. While fighting for her life, determined to keep Sean safe, twins (Dorian and Lillith) arrive and are clearly there to save her. Skyy learns that she is the Chosen One, as the Hybrids who had just saved her give her a crash course in heavenly history. Skyy’s wings, however, are a mystery and without knowing who her father is, it is one that may never be solved. When Skyy learns of the secret weapon which had been entrusted to her mother before she had perished, Skyy knows that she must find it and keep it from falling into the hands of those who could ultimately bring about the destruction of Earth itself.

I found the initial installment to the Gibborim series to be outstanding. The storyline is so intricately told, as Skyy pieces together all of the unknowns from her past in order to fight off an evil bigger than she had ever thought possible. I love the humor which has been injected in small doses at exactly the right moments, as well as the romantic element which is introduced during the first battle. B.J. Sheldon’s imagination is creative, bringing about a story that is as old as time itself. The action begins from the very first page and is non-stop through to the end. I very much enjoyed Hear the Crickets and recommend it to all readers over the age of 15 years who enjoy action, adventure, drama, mystery and a touch of romance in an all-out war between good and evil.

I enjoyed BJ Sheldon’s “Hear the Crickets”. It was the first book I’d read by the author and it will not be my last.

“Hear the Crickets” was not the atypical story about angels. It was an imaginative, fresh take which had me thinking about the whole genre of angel mythology. I loved how Sheldon interweaved references like the Book of Enoch into her story. I have read other books which mentioned this fabled doctrine, but this was the first time I read about Azazel’s role. Very interesting to say the least.

Sheldon’s characters were well developed and very enjoyable. My favorites were Skyye and Dorian. I immediately felt sorry for Skyye. Imagine being around for three hundred years and not being close to anyone—what a lonely existence. But Skyye was not a character to pity. She was strong and willing to stand up to a challenge. Her biggest challenge was not the role she needed to play in fulfilling a prophecy. Skyye had to learn to allow others close to her, really close to her. Thankfully, Dorian was the type of being which did not give up. He believed in her abilities from the very beginning and helped her grow as a “person”.

Sheldon’s handling of the fight scenes was fantastic. She used just the right amount of detailing to help a reader imagine the scene without it being overly graphic. There was only one weapon I needed to Google in order to get a vivid picture in my mind.

I loved how “Hear the Crickets” ended. Yes, it had me wondering what would happen next. But I was so glad Skyye experienced the outcome the way it was written. Although I’m thinking she has a lot more to endure before it is all over, at least she will know a little happiness.

I highly recommend BJ Sheldon’s “Hear the Crickets” for anyone. It is a creative read, full of hope and promise.

* I got ARC this for my honest review*

For some reason I thought I was going to read a book about a girl who was part cricket. Well I didn’t get that book. BUT! I got this book which is a a wonderful book that has to do more with angels and Nephilim.

I liked Skyy the self proclaimed freak who is kind of a shut in and not exactly nice to her best friend at times. I can understand why she would what to keep him at arms length though. During the course of the book you do see that she really cares for him. So, Skyy hears voices and paints visions she sees in her head. One day after a few day painting stint she got some unexpected not so nice visitors only to be saved/helped by a pair of nephilim twins. After that day Skyy’s life gets a turn and she finds out what her destiny could be, discovers more information that clouds her past and future and also has to fight and protect those she comes to love.

This book was filled with some great characters some wonderful mysterious aspect( because I was guessing and trying to figure out everything as Skyy was) lots of humor, a little romance and some great action! The ending has a great battle scene, heartbreak, revelation and a twist. I thought it was well written and very engrossing.

I enjoyed this book a lot and would gladly recommend it to those who like books with fallen angels, arch angels, nephilim and everything else that comes with the Angelic Lore. I’m looking forward to the next one in what I hope turns into a great series of books.

Digging the cover too! Simple but represents the book wonderfully.

Hear the Crickets is the first book I've ready by author BJ Sheldon, but it certainly won't be the last. With an exciting take on the world of angels, BJ pulled me into this world quickly and didn't let me go until the final word was written. The story surrounds Skyy, a woman who can't die. After centuries of living a humdrum, quiet life of seclusion, a quick turn of events leads her on a quest that becomes more than she would ever know. Secrets to her past are unlocked as she fights an enemy she never knew she had. With a band of friends and a world she never knew existed, can Skyy and her friends overcome... Or will the one thing she has that can save the world turn out to be the item that ends her forever.

I loved this book from the start and wasn't ready for it to end... And the last words of this book made me ready for book two!

Finally got a chunk of time and a beach by the lake to read the rest of this book I started so long ago. It's a fantastic story diving into some fun topics I personally love with angels and their fall. I loved the story itself and the journey of Skyy coming into more of what she doesn't understand about herself, the Watcher aspect and all the taunts toward defeating evil.

For me, romance is either hit or miss and since I was more involved with the story and characters, I tended to rush through the relationship aspects. In all, a truly fun read and will look out for the next installment.
