Most of these stories were pretty great. A couple of them - not so much.

Good for fans, not the best I've read.

Most of the stories were good, but I found a lot of them ended very abruptly. One step up from fanfiction.

Personally I was super excited and invested from the moment I learned there were collections of short stories for Stargate. So I had high expectations for this and overall it did not disappoint. I will be rating each story individually and giving my thoughts on each. Some minor spoilers will be mentioned throughout.

SG-1: Precognition - 5 Stars

I really enjoyed this one from beginning to end and it solidified the excitement I had for this book. It had a really great concept expanding on an interesting episode while giving more insight into General Hammond’s past and the chance to see the episode 1969 from his POV. Just a fun read overall and a great start to the collection of stories.

Stargate Atlantis: Cotermino(us) - 3.5 Stars

This one I had more trouble getting into and I found confusing until the end. But my understanding of it (SPOILERS) is that the POV of Sheppard in the beginning was not actually Sheppard but the surviving girl they brought back from the Stargate that has no memories of her own left and absorbed Sheppard’s. The reference to the man and woman watching and the wave made it all come full circle. That’s why Keller is so concerned by ‘his’ seemingly correct answer to his identity. It was just tricky to try and figure out the time line of events, especially when I still believed it had been Sheppard in the beginning. There was an unsettling feeling to the whole story that was well done but hard to enjoy when I was having trouble feeling grounded in the time frame. Maybe knowing it’s not Sheppard at the start will help for overall enjoyment? It’s one I feel like I might need to read again to fully wrap my head around.

SG-1: A Woman’s Army - 4.5 Stars

I enjoyed reading in Janet’s POV and getting some more insight on her backstory. It was nice to see Cassandra referenced even though she didn’t appear in the story, it felt like the show dropped the ball on that storyline and only occasionally remembered Fraiser had a daughter. It had a nice mix of excitement and introspection.

Stargate Atlantis: Iron Horse - 4 Stars

A neat look into Ronon’s life prior to Sateda’s culling, giving interesting world building on what it was like back then. Essentially (SPOILERS) Ronon and his friends Tyre and Ara (making their later fates in the show even sadder after getting to see them as they were beforehand) are on a train with other soldiers when they stop to help a village impacted by an earthquake. It turns out an Ancient device that prevents earthquakes was stolen and they need to get it back to save the day.

I also like the background it gives to his relationship to Melanie by showing how they met. The fact she doesn’t leave the villagers to leave on the train is nice foreshadowing to the Wraith culling and destruction of Sateda when she refuses to leave the hospital to save herself.

SG-1: Dude, Where’s My Spaceship? - 3.5 Stars

It’s been a while since I last watched Stargate SG-1 so it took me a bit to place when this was taking place. It would have been nice if there was a historian’s note or something like that telling what season and episodes it takes place in.

I have to dock something for it including Pete Shanahan in it. I’m kidding… sort of. I don’t feel like he really contributed much to the story - much like in the show but that’s just me, main characters’ romances with side or background characters usually fail to impress me - and his relationship to Sam just annoys me in general. Samantha Carter deserves so much better.

Lines like these two I’ll give do not do much to change my mind on the matter. So the first, which is for context right after Pete threw a stuffed giraffe at a Jaffa, tackling him and doing his first and only useful act in the story: “Pete, nice move,” Carter called. Jack almost did a double take. She did not bat her eyes at Shanahan, did she?” It wasn’t that great to warrant a compliment, there’s already been plenty of tackling going on lol. And why would Sam bat her eyes at Pete at a time like this? Feels pretty odd to me.

Onto the second line: “She shook her head carefully and managed to focus on the scene around her. “What on Earth? Pete, you okay?”
“Fine, honey.”
“Honey?” Jack mimicked softly to a shushing noise from Daniel. He’d never heard anyone refer to Carter like that before.”

I feel really picked up when Janet and Sarah Gardner showed up in about the last ten pages and we got to see events through their POVs. I enjoyed Sarah’s quick thinking in playing the part of Osiris as long as she could before the Jaffa realized something was amiss.

Stargate Atlantis: Kill Switch - 3.5 Stars

A bit too much telling to the writing style in the beginning for my liking but overall a neat story. It was a bit predictable though in that (SPOILERS) the weapon was disabled in the end since obviously they didn’t have that defense system in the show.

SG-1: Aftermath - 5 Stars

I really liked this one, it tackled multiple POVs while covering the aftermath of an episode I hadn’t considered getting this sort of tag to it. But I’m glad this exists and luckily the gist of the episode came back to me with how the story recapped things.

Stargate Atlantis: Hermiod’s Last Mission - 5 Stars

I had always wondered what happened with Hermiod once the Asgard all died out since that really wasn’t covered in Atlantis. It was nice to see a story acknowledging the impact it would have for the Daedalus, just before it happened. Which was a neat opportunity to do something with Hermiod as a character. I enjoyed seeing from Hermiod’s POV and seeing his thought process on his and his people’s impending death. The mission itself was fun with a nicely executed creepy element. It ended a bit faster than I would have l liked but perhaps that's a sign of how much I was enjoying it. I also had hoped Hermiod would mention the fact he was dying to someone because I was curious of what the reactions would be.

SG-1: Piper’s Song - 5 Stars

I really enjoyed this one too, it had a cool concept in revealing an old Earth legend actually had some truth to it. A nice last mission for SG-1 to take before Jack got made commander of Homeworld Command and replaced by Landry.

Stargate Atlantis: Dislocation - 5 Stars

I loved the premise of this one, seeing Sam’s POV of her early start to leading Atlantis is something I’ve almost wanted. And I felt this was very well done, it was also nice to see other characters POV’s to adjusting to Sam while still mourning Elizabeth. I liked the world that was created for the mission to take place on, everything fit together nicely in the end. One of my favorites of the bunch.

In Conclusion

Out of all of the stories, my personal favorites were Precognition, Hermiod’s Last Mission, Piper’s Song, and Dislocation. I wanted to limit it to a top three but in the end I had to pick four instead haha. A solid read overall and I definitely recommend giving them a try, you’ll most likely find at least one favorite out of the ten. I certainly planning on reading the other collections of short stories.

Mixed bag

There are some excellent stories here. My favorites: General Hammond's story, Ronon's story, Sam's early days on Atlantis and the one with SG-1 shortly after Moebius. There weren't any bad stories although I would prefer in a collection of short stories by various authors that they do not reference other of their novels/works. They really should stand alone. The story Aftermath makes fairly heavy reference to the SG-1 novel Do No Harm.

Favorite story: “Precognition” by Jo Graham touches on the after-effects of one of my favorite episodes of Stargate SG-1, when our heroes travel back in time and are aided by a younger George Hammond. It was lovely to see his progression through the years, taking us to the man we know and love who guided the Stargate Program with such a steady hand. I especially enjoyed the historical twist about some other characters thrown in, which I decline to spoil here.

Story I’d love to see expanded into a novel: “Cotermino(us)” by Peter J. Evans started off really weird. Like the author was trying too hard to evoke the narrative of what we might see on screen rather than reading. But as things progressed, I got sucked in by the possibilities of what might be happening. The final scene packed an emotional punch, and I’d read an entire novel about this story, or what takes place next.

There were some hits and some excruciating misses in this one. In some stories everyone was in character and there was a quick and enjoyable adventure but there were also some seriously bad stories that were cringeworthy. I always find I like the Atlantis novels more so than the SG-1 and that is oddly still disappointing after all this time.

I sometimes need some easy reading and often turn to Stargate as most of the books read as easily as the TV series are watched! This anthology of short stories was no exception; an enjoyable and easily read collection.

Not quite as good as the first one, not nearly as on point, much larger fraction of short stories that are complete misses, but quite an enjoyable read nonetheless.

More stargate sg-1 and atlantis stories are always fun, perfectly captured characters, it's like watching more tv episodes. I rated this 3 stars as one of the stories were confusing and just didn't mesh well with stories that are supposed to be beginings or points of origins. This one bad short story of many leaves a bad taste in your mouth. And it's the second story so you start to worry about the quality of the book early on. The other stories are all great but sadly I kept thinking about that one bad one. Worth reading if you skip the 2nd story.

Much like the first such anthology, this collection of SG-1 and SGA short stories contained an entertaining mixture of snippets from character backgrounds to storylines that could have been part of any regular episode. While it didn't have as much in the way of standout stories I truly loved as the first collection, I did enjoy the majority of these quite a bit. My favourites were the very first and the very last story, dealing with the influence his encounter with SG-1 in 1969 had on George Hammond's life and Sam's first days in command of Atlantis respectively.

More like fan fiction than professional short stories. Enjoyable anyway, just not in the league of recent publications.
