Toxic

Rate this book

Don’t play with your food, the first rule of etiquette vampires are taught, and yet I am so tempted to nibble on the mortal doctor I’m forced to work with. My weakness for Raphael is a problem - for him. My touch is deadly to humans, although they do tend to die with a smile on their face.

Vampires are real. The world now knows, and in a gesture of good will, we’ve allowed them to send a human to study us that the populace might understand they’ve nothing to fear. We’re not savage, mindless killers. We’re cold, calculating survivors, and we know how to keep a secret.

It’s up to me to make sure this human doctor doesn’t see too much. So no eating him, as I’m sure his demise will end the precarious truce vampire kind has with the world. It saddens me to admit we will need their armies and weapons in the coming war. A war they refuse to believe is coming.

Fools. I haven’t lived this long to suffer them, and I didn’t become the general of the vampire queen’s army by being diplomatic. Everyone will fight in the upcoming battle, or they’ll feed my troops. All things living will do their part, or die.

Just like Raphael will die if he keeps tempting me with those lips. Because everyone knows a vampire’s kiss is toxic.

Toxic is a true urban fantasy story with a touch of romance. As a romance reader I love to be able to have the two sub-genres mixed together. This book is written in Ellie POV. Ellie is tough and is out to save the humans from demons, but she comes into a surprise when she meets the mortal doctor. At first he seems human until he saves her and well, you’ll have to read to find out what this hot doctor is. Sorry, no spoilers, not LOL.

With this being more urban fantasy you’ll find an excellent cliffhanging ending and an ending that leaves romance readers pretty ticked off, (hint your killing me here yet again Eve, I want the next book now lol) so don’t look for a HEA. This is a very nice story with plenty of action and suspense. You get one hot sex scene between Ellie and Raphael.

Teaser
Annabelle sat up and leaned forward. She read aloud, As expected, our coming out has caused quite the furor, but so far no signs of mobbing humans or an increase in stake production. However, the call to understand us is great, thus in the spirit of openness and goodwill, the regency has decided to allow one of its loyal subjects to answer the questions of one highly regarded scientist and doctor. As general, I expect you to put yourself at the discretion of Doctor Raphael Angelus. Be candid and allow him to conduct his tests. We already know what he will find. Oh, and Elizabeth, don‘t eat him,
please. By order of your queen.
Annabelle laughed.
I glared at her. It‘s not funny.

Ellie is a vampire and general of the vampire queens army. Because of a prophecy regarding the Demons from Hell breaking free and reeking havoc on mankind, the Vampire Queen gives Ellie the task of bringing Vampires out in the open. That way ensuring their cooperation in the up coming battle. Vampires gotta eat something right??:)

Because of all the vampire myths and technology in the modern world...not a lot of humans are buying the fact that vampires are real. So the government appoints a scientist to run test on Ellie to make sure her claims are true. The scientist,Raphael, is sent to Ellie's home to study her and he's incredibly hot but for some reason is trying to suppress his true feelings for Ellie. Of course she see's this as a challenge and tries her damdest to seduce the stick-up-his-ass Dr.

I loved everything about this story. Ellie was awesome...the daemons were evil and disgusting and Raphael was delicious!! I can't wait til the next one....I swear I was screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" at the end..LOVED IT!! I can definitely see this series as being one of my favs right up there with "Princess of Hell"!!

I thoroughly love a great story line with a strong female front and center. Ellie is a vampire and the head general for the vampire Queen. She's all business and emanates strength tenfold until she meets a man of science.

The inevitable attack among human kind is coming from the depths of the daemon hell. Ellie and the Queen are gearing up for battle. Revealing their identity, appeasing wide spread panic, enlisting help from the Other races, training armies, tracking daemons, collecting intel and the list goes on- Ellie surely does not have time to do something as human as learn she has a heart and emotions other then the pang of blood hunger.

Toxic is equal parts urban fantasy and para romance and with a character like Ellie who throws curve ball after curve ball any reader will be entertained. I will note that the ending certainly leaves an urge to throw a tantrum (like a baby who has lost their binkie) until the next installment is released.

Wow! What a great story! Great chemistry between Ellie and Rafe and a creative and imaginative story. I definitely want to learn more about who Lily is- perhaps Lilith? Love the idea of a demon invasion of earth with vamps teaming up with humans to protect the world. Can't wait to read the next one in the series.

Dark?

It hurts that I have to rate this as a two star. Dark? Not in the slightest. In fact this book is so vanilla its a bean. The only thing Dark about this book is the fact it takes place at night because the leading character is a vampire. Labeling this as Dark or Horror is misleading and false advertising. I was really interested in see just how Dark Langlais could get because most of her books are PR with clever humor that wasn’t over the top. This book was just like her others, minus the clever humor. At 87% I’ve cast this book aside. I just don’t care any more. I can’t really see any real connection between the two main characters. There’s barely any sizzle.

There’s also no sex at all except at the beginning and it was the lead heroine character explaining that she was taken by her creator. So no sex, just a paragraph of short foreplay in a couple of places. As far as stories go, this was is a bust. While I like Eve Langlais’ stories, they’re either hits or misses with me. This one is a miss.

Also to note, as of 3-22-20 this book is not on Goodreads so I couldn’t post it there... But I will as soon as it does.

Updated... I went back and finished it. It was only a small jaunt away from it. Apparently , I just stopped short of the over anticipated sex. It lasted from 88% to 90%, of which I just skipped over. I really didn’t care at this point. So the last couple of chapters were about three pages each. The first of Rafe’s point of view and the last of our heroine’s that consisted of merely glossing over the climatic part of the book and ending it with a synopsis ending instead of an actual one. As for being one of the most rushed over, copout ending, this ranks as in the top ten. As for being Dark? This book was a fluff piece that would have been laughed off by the mere suggestion it was Dark.

Sorry, Langlais for leaving such a negative review. I love some of your other works. They usually are a hit or miss as stated above. This was a big miss for me. I truly wanted to see your talents at writing something Dark. To see if you could write in the ways of another genre like your cyborg sci-fi series. I guess this answers it. I will be trying your Toxic Dust. I have a need for Dystopia and want to see how you do in that genre.

Well, this was mainly written in Ellie's POV but at the last of it we get Rafe's POV briefly. I kinda wish that we got a little more with Rafe cause lets be honest we wanna know what he's thinking too! However, I think she might have done it this way to keep Rafe a mystery. I think I figured out what he was maybe about Chapter 5 or 6 I mean at that point what I read so far his name kinda gave me an inkling. I knew there was something about him and he was more than human. He had a geek persona but the real him there is NOTHING geeky about him. Wow...he was hot. All dominant yumminess!

Ellie was different. I'm not used to reading about strong females cause sometimes they sorta turn me off...depending how they are written. So, I was nervous before starting this book even though its by one of my favorite authors. I ended up loving Ellie. She's strong and powerful and she knows it. Very confident and deadly. She was awesome though because although she was deadly she had a pretty big heart she hid. She laughed and cried and got her feelings hurt. Definitely all woman with the moodiness lol.

I dont recall Eve writing about vampires before. I mean characters yes but having a book based on a vampire characters throughout is different. I loved the book. One thing though is that Queen of the vampires Lily she seemed sorta unqueen like when we actually meet her. She waited too long to get this stuff going. There was a good build up to her character but once Ellie goes to see her to request she make the announcement about daemons to the public she seemed kinda weak to me. Ellie acted more like a Queen than she did cause she is very take charge and get it done. This book surrounds Ellie and Rafe though so maybe Lily is just misunderstood...dunno. Thats just my take. I kinda hope she does more and makes this into a series cause those Angels joined them in their fight and that'd be awesome to do stories about them and perhaps Lily. A recommended read.

"The End" ... What?? Eve Langlais's books don't end with cliff hangers!?! Yikes!

Great story though! I liked this one. It was different then the last few books I read from her. I was hoping for a POV from Rafe - but that didn't come until the very end - and that was mean :)

Of course we can figure out how the ending goes, though. So It was a good thing :)

The book starts off as we met with Ellie - Under orders from her Queen, she is publicly announcing herself as a Vampire - something the Humans need to know - but are they ready to except it??

Not really - So Her Queen brought in a Geeky scientist to ask questions, take samples and get all the answers a human needs to believe Vampires are not out to kill them...

Ellie has a problem with excepting athroity from others - especially a really good looking in a Geeky type way Scientist. But under orders from her queen she allows this guy to poke and prude - all while trying to convince herself that she is NOT attracted to him and why isn't he responding to her like every other human would be doing?

With trouble on the horizon with the Demons approaching, she tries her best to put her thoughts of this Scientist away and concentrate on the upcoming battle for her life - But when he keeps popping up to talk to her, she has a hard time listening to anything but what her body is telling her.

With suspense and a lot of action - both inside and outside of the bedroom :) This book was a great read :)

If I'm screaming, "NOOOOOOOOOOOO", mentally when a book ends then it deserves 5 freaking stars. I swear if there's not a sequel coming, my life is over.

Daemons are coming to take over the world so the vamps have to come out of the closet. I'm not going to lie, when I first started reading it I thought it was going to be like the Southern Vampire series. I love being proven wrong. Nothing like that series at all.

Ellie is such a bad ass vampire. She is hardcore kicking some ass in this book. I can honestly say that I did not expect for her to fall for Rafe at all. I mean you can't blame her though. He's a totally hottie.

Rafe is not who he seems to be at all. Again, I was shocked. There were so many twists with the plot that I didn't see coming. The ending was so heartbreaking and unexpected. I'm just hoping and praying and wishing that there is another that follows up. I can't be left hanging like that, Eve! LOL.

Another awesome book. Eve really knows how to dish them out. I can't wait to read more.

Who would of thought, a bad ass vampire who bathed in the blood of virgins at one time would find her humanity and fall in love with a very unlikely source. Then there's the geeky scientist who turns out to be pretty bad ass and not at all who he seems.

This is an awesome book. You get just the right amount of romance and are on the edge of your seat the whole time wondering when they will get it on. I loved the connection with the two characters. We get one amazing sex scene that will leaving you wanting more. Plus there is a battle coming, one where Hell is coming to Earth and the vamps and humans will have to fight for survival.

I can not wait to read the next one. We are left on a bit of a cliffhanger and I really want to know how this all going to play out! This is a great book for paranormal romance lovers or urban fantasy readers!!!

Highly highly recommended paranormal romantic adventure. This book has more action and build up than sex so story does not disappoint.

The daemons are coming to invade earth - the vampires know and are trying to help our world to prepare to fight. Our heroine's battleplan is that those that don't fight can become food. I WANT MORE!! bring book two.

I won't rate this book as I read just a few pages of it. Really, I didn't even finish the first chapter. Nevertheless, those few pages were enough for me to get annoyed as hell and make me go on a rant. So here's my rant and the paragraph that caused it:

"I was known during my humans life as Countess Elizabeth Báthory." There were many stories of me. All of them portraying me as horribly bloodthirsty. All of them true.

The FUCK were all of them true. NONE of them were true. Even though still to this day, z-list horror movies (and apparently badly researched PNR books) like to make Countess Báthory into the female version of Vlad Tepes aka Count Drakula, she NEVER was a bloodthirsty killer. Elizabeth Báhtory's only sin was being a wealthy widow, and power and money hungry men coveted her lands and wealth.

After she was accused of horrible crimes such as torturing her maids, sacrificing virgins to Satan and bathing in said virgins' blood, she was held captive in her own home until her death.

So she was not horribly bloodthirsty, she was a victim of power hungry men of her time.

I don't have a problem with real-life people being the protagonist of fiction novels, but I do have a problem when authors don't do their homework and do no research regarding real-life people. Or they use z-list horror movies as research material.

Okay, I'm done ranting.

This started off really good, I actually loved Ellie as a character and Rafe, it certainly had that enemies-to-lovers trope going on ( which I love ) but as the story went on I found it boring, the sex scene between them wasn't especially steamym in fact for such a build up between the two it was incredibly tame and it got quite sappy, I'm not sure if it was the storyline for what but this one just didn't hit the mark for me

loved this book, this world was wonderfully written and so alive, like most of Ms. Langlais' worlds. I wish more people had fallen in love with this world, I would have loved to read more about The Blood Countess and her fallen Angel. and see what matches could have been made for the other angels that came down with him.

Five stars for this book.

Interestingly good

I liked the premise of the bloodthirsty countess and the so called human geek that resisted her even though he was drawn to her. I felt like more could have been added to the final reveal and the battle that followed. I truly wanted more of this story.

Okay read

Different kind of read from this author and I enjoyed it, but.
Not sure why it want as engaging but felt that the good versus evil didn’t balance out and the end was rushed and incomplete,

Humans are for eating and I am not one to play with my food, so I’m baffled as to why one geeky mortal doctor makes me wish our kind could be together without my brand of love being toxic. As if suffering from human emotions isn’t problem enough, our world is about to engage in a war where our chances of survival are slim at best. And no one wants to listen.
But, I didn’t become the general of the vampire Queen’s army by being diplomatic. Everyone will fight in the upcoming battle, or they’ll feed my troops and me. Either way, all things living will do their part.
I am, after all, the Blood Countess: toxic lover to humans, vicious bitch to my enemies, and my word is law.

Toxic was not quite what I was expecting and I’m not sure if I should love Eve Langlais because of that or rant at her. The story was another stellar offering from the author and I am a huge fan of her humor and tone. The woman has a wonderful talent when she creates characters and this book was not a disappointment. What did bring me to near tears was the abrupt ending, I wanted to throw a fit an all-out tantrum because I want more and I want it now. Ellie has to be one of my all-time favorite heroines; she is blunt and uncompromising and yet still manages to be very likable in an “I wish I was as confident as her” kind of way. Rafe is fantastic. I love me a sexy nerd and this leading man not only has the brain and brawn he knows how to work both attributes. The setting is engaging and the supporting cast including the villains add to the entertainment. I cannot wait to read the next adventure that this couple experiences.

Eve Langlais' Toxic was a quick read, yet still a good one! I suppose you would call it a novella because of its length. But still it was quite fascinating.

First I loved that our main character, Ellie, was once the Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory! She is a very vicious character, yet there is some heart to her. She's a true vixen, yet she has a deadly curse, if she were to make love to a man, he would die, because she's fluid in her state of arousal.

The vampires are outing themselves to the public, but they have ulterior motives. The vampires know of a daemon apocalypse coming, daemons are slowly entering our world and killing humans. Vampires need humans for their blood source, so they need them alive. Thus why they want humans to know about them and that they aren't monsters--in a sense.

In part of that plan, Ellie must agree to an interview of sorts with Rafe, who is a doctor. He wants to study her and relate his findings to the public and help ease the tension humans may feel. Ellie has a strong attraction the doctor but she does everything in her power to fight it since it could mean his death. It doesn't help that the doctor likes her too.

It's hard to say much about this one since it was a quick read. Overall it was a good read. I will admit that I wasn't too big on the romance scenes that occurred, but that's just me not being a big romance fan. And the scenes were pretty intense to my delicate mind! :)

Ellie was a great character, snarky and dangerous. She's not a woman you want to be on her bad side with. Rafe is a very handsome fella with his own secrets. I sort of had an inkling as to what his secrets were, but I was still taken by surprise by their depths.

Overall rating 3/5 stars

Elizabeth (Ellie) is known to many as the Blood Countess, which was a title given to her as a fledgling vampire because of her ravenous appetite. However, she is also known for being the general of the vampire Queen’s army and the spokesperson for their ‘coming out’ to humans.

With a daemon war on the horizon, it is among Ellie's duties to inform their food source (humans) and negotiate alliances with other hidden species. Unfortunately, the vampire Queen has volunteered Ellie to be a test subject to try and allay the humans' fears. Now with the good doctor in Ellie's residence, it is all she can do to keep her mind on the impending doom and not on Dr. Angelus' body.

I really enjoy how clever and witty Ms. Langlais's writing is. Her heroine's are tough and never afraid to speak their mind whether to someone else or to themselves, which Ellie is no exception.

'Suck it up buttercup and stop being a pussy.'

There wasn't much heat throughout the story other than some serious sexual tension, but the one scene that was given more than lived up to its potential. The Toxic title to this story definitely plays a part and I could never have guessed before reading the story just how it would, so readers expect to be shocked when you read about it.

Ms. Langlais's cliffhangerish endings are almost legendary to me, but do the trick in ensnaring the reader to come back for more. With so many loose ends to tie up in this story, I will absolutely read the next in the Blood Countess series.

I usually don't like to read trilogy. The reason was that no matter how enthralled i'd get on the first book, chances are i'll go through the second and third book sighing all the way. It's prolly related to how i don't possess a lot of patience and how i'm easily bored.

I was actually on a reading spree of Eve Langlais's books and i didn't realise that this is a trilogy or at least i hoped so seeing as if it's longer i'll prolly DNF the entire series. This book has done what Princess of Hell series also by Eve Langlais couldn't do, which is making me pining for the second book.

I like how the h manages to do what other h tried to do, control her lust - if barely, but hey we all have our desires - and she did not make me cringe in shame by throwing herself at him like a cat in heat. I hate it when they did that. Ellie had earned my respect and admiration for that. The H on the other hand, i like him but he does not give me any strong impression in this book at all. Maybe in the next book Rafe would finally be in the spotlight more? I seriously hoped so.

Basically after reading the first book i found myself very in love with Ellie and Rafe, but Ellie especially, and i just had to read the next one. Which sucks greatly since that means i have to wait for how long i dunno but i'll bet not soon enough for my liking. Alas, great masterpiece needs time and i'll be as patient as i can possibly be and distract myself with other series. TTFN

I had high hopes for this book after reading the blurb. I love urban paranormal and this one had everything - vampires, shifters, angels. I love history and it has Elizabeth Bathory, the Bloody Countess, for crying out loud. Should have been perfect, except it was not. The whole Bathory angle was briefly sketched, no history, no color, nothing. The main protagonists left me with the impression that they were only sketched, two-dimensional, unfinished. I could not feel for them, root for them and this is my test for enjoying a book. I did not buy Elizabeth's change of heart, I was not convinced that after centuries of bloodshed she is suddenly in love, and with an angel, of all things. The plot felt unfinished, as a sort of background to the love story, except the love story didn't work either. Sorry, expected a lot more. I won't be buying the sequels

What would you do if you suddenly found out vampires were real? Most of the world freaks out, not that this reaction surprises Ellie, the vampire queen's general. But the queen has a reason for announcing their existence. Daemons are beginning to seep into the world at an alarming rate and everyone is going to need to be at the ready. Ellie, aka Countess Elizabeth Bathory, has little patience for all this co-operation with humans (aka food), but she's a good soldier and does what she's told. Little does she know that this announcement will bring her into contact with the one being she thinks she cannot have but wants desperately.

As with every Eve Langlais story, there is a good deal of humor and sexy time woven throughout the story. Ellie and Rafe are awesome. I totally recommend this book!

Awesome, fantastic, funny, and all around great story to read.

Vampire, shapeshifters, demons, angels, humans, thralls and a few more, mix that all together and you have one very entertaining story that has humor along with blood and Gore. As the plants align and the Vail to the dimensions thin and the demons plan on coming to take over the world. The Vampire Queen has a plan to get the humans to help by revealing themselves then letting then know of the coming apocalypse. But plans don't always work as one wants. And then there is a great love story mixed in it all.

This was an interesting book in the sense that the Paranormals decided to bring the existence to light in order to save the world from Demons. Ellie was picked the vampire queen to be the one who makes the announcement to the humans. Things go crazy for a bit because the queen does not want the humans to know the real reason why they made the announcement. Ellie has to let a human doctor to her home in order to run some experiments but there is something different about him.

A couple of plot twists made this an enjoyable reading. I really like this author and her books.

First thing I will say is:

After my qualms the first time, I discovered that I love the story, being the heroine a kick ass b*tch and so hot Hero. There are no sex scenes until the end, but puweeh! It is so hot and makes up for their teasing. I'm quite disappointed on how the story end? that keeps me hanging, but in the end it is still enjoyable.
