John Tighe provides good insight into how Amazon works to do exactly what the subtitle says: "Maximize Your Royalties, Get Paid to Capture Leads and Rapidly Build a Successful 'Backend' Business."
For example, you might have heard the sweet spot for pricing your Kindle e-book is $2.99-$9.99, but did you know the size of the download can affect your "delivery cost" and therefore the amount you earn? I didn't. Not only does Tighe explain this fact, but demonstrates how compressing images in the file can help make the difference (he shows you the math, too).
He explains how serialization works, how permafree can benefit your sales, and how KDP Select factors into these decisions for you -- among other topics.
I skimmed much of the book, as I'm not completely sold on using Amazon exclusively -- but if you already do or are planning to, this book is worth at least what you'll pay for it.
Anyone who believes that books miraculously sell themselves once they have been published is going to be sorely disappointed. And, while it may sound mercenary to investigate ways to earn more money from books, it also makes good business sense.
This book was a great resource to explore different strategies to maximise the income an author can generate from their Kindle books. It was simply and clearly laid out and I felt the exploration of three main strategies was really helpful.
Definitely a book I will return to in the future, and one that I’d recommend to anyone who has published a Kindle book.
Writing a book is great, but making money is a completely different ballgame. This book reminds you of some easy strategies to monetize your book (non-fiction only) that most authors, including me, overlook. Short, practical and useful information.
However, If you dont have a published book or are yet to see sales, please start with a book on writing or book marketing first. The book clearly states this, but do see some negative reviews citing this, which feels awfully unfair.
Most books on how to market Kindle books are all about the metrics and finding a target audience or some generic topic like that. This book talks only about how to actually make money from your Book and having that business model in mind working backwards to making strategies that really work. I’m going to read it again so that it really sinks in. Great book!
This is a really useful book that contains a lot of hard won experience. It's a couple of years old and mainly about the American market but neither of those things really mattered most of the advice was still pertinent.
The book was a free gift for signing up on the email list. It had some good information but seemed a duplication of the other book. Worth the time to read but don't expect too much new material.
Interesting. Didn't know some of the technical things like price ranges for certain royalties and Amazon rules. Nice to have a starting point for my own research to confirm
Thanks John! Just published my first book. Now with the help you have given me, I shall go about earning some money from it. Great advice, thanks so much !
This wasn't quite what I expected. It literally is a guide on maximizing royalties. I guess I should have read beyond the colon before I downloaded it. There really were some great insights provided for negotiating the Kindle Direct Publishing process though. Entering into the process with the knowledge supplied in Tighe's book really should give you a leg up on several important things: feedback, print on demand, pricing set points, royalties, etc.
Make Money From Non-Fiction Kindle Books by John Tighe is a nice, friendly introduction into the world of non-fiction Kindle Publishing and marketing. I got it from a gi-mongous book promotion awhile ago that offered a bunch of books as a bundle, and this was one of them.
While I already knew some of the things that were discussed in this book, like the 70%-royalty option on Amazon for Kindle e-books and that pricing matters a lot, it was still very nice to hear them from an understanding and easy voice. Tighe's enthusiasm and clarity with how he talks about each as aspect of the process really shows his love for teaching, and it's that kind of voice that I miss these days in some books. He tells you exactly why it creating a series of books will help you get more traffic to your page rather than having a standalone book, the marketing advantages of having print version of your book for sale next to your e-book, and much more.
And although this book doesn't go into depth on how to necessarily write said non-fiction books that would help your business, it's still worth reading. It's a nice way to get your feet wet.
Great overview of how to monetize your Kindle book
I've read several of John Tighe's books, and I think I like this one best. It's short, simple, and easy to read. I don't think there's anything really new here, but the information is presented well. Some of it is possibly over-hyped, like saying a published author can make $10,000, $20,000, or even $50,000 speaking. I don't think that's possible for most writer's - unless you've got one hell of a platform.
That said, there is a lot of useful information packed in this 93 page volume. It's a great starting point for new and experienced authors who are trying to figure out what's next. How do I make a living in this crazy business?
I got the book for 99 cents but even if you have to pay four or five dollars, you're going to get enough good, usable ideas to make your money back several times over.
My thought is buy this book as a jumping off point. Use it to get ideas, then move on to other books that cover the topics you're interested in more detail. Just remember, writing is a process. Every day, and every book, brings you a little closer to your end point. You're end goal as an author is to hang in there, and complete the journey.
I received this book on a free day otherwise I would most likely not have purchased it. There was no new information in here for me but I've been using Amazon and Kindle publishing for a couple of years now. For beginners there is a lot of useful information here about why you should publish on Amazon and all the different things you should do to be successful. There are a lot of personal stories just as other reviewers have said but how else will a reader know whether they should trust the advice of an author. The stories are useful so we know why this person is qualified to write books giving advice on Kindle publishing. My copy came with a free audio book and other information in the back which is a fabulous add-on.
Worth a read if you're new to Kindle book publishing.
This book was a mixed bag. The first part of the book had some helpful information. I would say the first half of the book was 3.5 stars. The last part of the book was 2 stars at best - a lot of statements about it is possible to make a lot of money, without giving anything actionable.
This is written from the perspective of using a Kindle e-book as linkable content to sell other things such as; coaching services, audio programs and seminars and workshops. A well rounded book.
This short book is about using a kindle book to kickstart a non-book related business. It may be useful for budding authors, but not people who are already publishing.
