Journey with USA Today bestselling author Sue-Ellen Welfonder (also known as Allie Mackay) back in time to a magical world of Highland romance: medieval Scotland where honor was everything and no sacrifice too great for love.
Flames of winter burn the hottest…
Katla MacKenzie is fascinated by the legends and lore of the Vikings, her mother’s people. When she meets a dashing stranger in an enchanted place known to be a haunt of Norse deities, she gladly gives her heart – and her passion – to the lover she only knows as the Lord of Winter.
Secretly flattered when a bonnie lass believes him a god, Gunnar MacLeod can’t resist her and seduces Katla atop the mountain known as Odin’s Flame. In truth, he is the one seduced. But when he learns her name, he must let her go - and not just because their clans are warring.
When a clan tragedy forces Gunnar to leave Skye, he’ll sacrifice everything before he can return to Katla. When he does, a bitter enemy is waiting. But a heart that loves is powerful, and Gunnar will do whatever he must to claim Katla as his own.
“I was totally entranced from the first sentence until the last and never wanted it to end. Winter Fire made me laugh and cry which means I was totally involved emotionally. 5 stars.” ~ Jeanne Sheats, Romance Reader

Sue-Ellen MacDuffie was born and raided in Florida. She is a card-carrying Scotophile whose burning wish to make frequent (free) trips to the land of her dreams led her to a twenty year career with the airlines. Bi-lingual, she flew international all those years, working her flights as foreign language speaker. Her flying career allowed her to see the world, but it was always to Scotland that she returned.
Now a full-time writer, she’s quick to admit that she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. She spent fifteen years living in Europe and used that time to explore as many castle ruins, medieval abbeys, and stone circles as possible. Anything ancient, crumbling, or lichened caught her eye. She makes annual visits to Scotland, insisting they are a necessity as each trip gives her inspiration for new books.
Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. In addition to Scotland, her greatest passions are medieval history, the paranormal, and dogs. She never watches television, loves haggis, and writes at a four-hundred-and-fifty year old desk that once stood in a Bavarian castle.
Sue-Ellen is married and currently resides with her husband and Jack Russell Terrier in Florida. Readers can learn more about her and the world of her books at: www.welfonder.com.
In this second story of the Return To Kintail series we are brought back to the Western Highlands in the year 1352 to Eilean Creag Castle, Duncan Mackenzie's stronghold, where Katla Mackenzie has lost her heart to The Lord of Winter atop the high peaks of Odin's Flame under the beautiful Northern Lights. Everyone thinks her a touch mad but she knows to her soul that she will never belong to anyone else. Gunner MacLeod lost his heart that night also but led Katla to believe he was this Lord of Winter because their clans were feuding and to do otherwise would have brought nothing but anguish to her. A huge misunderstanding and anger sent Gunner fleeing from his clan but he's returned with the truth now and once Katla runs into him and sees he's just a mortal man, she's madder than a wet hen.
Will Gunner be able to win Katla's forgiveness and can he bring justice to the person who's behind the betrayals?
I love returning to Duncan Mackenzie and his lady wife, Linett, and the clan there. He has been one of my favorite's of Sue-Ellen's characters and I do believe they exist on another plane....just through the mist. Devorgilla IS a true soul, a cailleach, who appears throughout the many stories Sue-Ellen has brought us. For those she loves, she's faithful and woe to those who cross her. Sue-Ellen writes of brave men and women who hold their honor as sacred. The love for their clans, their lands, and their hearths run deep. The detail in her writing was beautifully done so that I could see clearly the Aurora Borealis as it danced around Gunner and Katla...could hear it's hum. I love a good battle and it was if I was standing to the side watching as the men clashed together in that gorge. She writes her characters so clearly you come to love them as your own. Even Katla's little dog, Glaum, I wanted to squeeze. I smiled, and found myself laughing at the banter between these two as they walked the path towards their HEA.

Sue-Ellen Welfonder weaves an enthralling story based on the enchanting aurora borealis. This is the story of Katla & Gunnar finding each other in the seductive "winter fire" in an alluring one night that effects them for two years before Gunnar returns to claim Katla from an enemy clan. Will he be able to convince her that he really cares even when she finds he's an ordinary man and not the God that she thought had seduced and then abandoned her? A dazzling story of Viking lore, Scots tradition and fabled folklore that will keep you reading long into the night!
This was such a sweet story - I loved Katla & Gunnar.
Katla is a bit of a free spirit, she met and fell in love with Gunnar two years ago when she climbed Odin's Flame to bask in the Winter Fire (northern lights). At the time she thought Gunnar was a Norse god, the Lord of Winter and gave herself to him, body and soul.
Gunnar never meant for things to go so far between them and as much as he wanted to claim Katla as his own, problems in his clan prevented him from doing so and caused him to leave Skye for two years.
Now he's back and wants to set things right with his clan and finally claim Katla.
This was a very long novella - it was well written, flowed nicely, had some steamy love scenes, a lot of emotion and cameos from Duncan & Linnet! It was pretty much a perfect read.
All the books she's written have become keepers. Now digital, the spouse can't complain about my collections.. Rarely do I find a author with stories i re-read, but this is one. You will feel the cold, the warmth from the fur, how dark the night is, the love shining through, the evil in the villain.. quit a talent with words.
It is full of suspense and action. I love the story and the cold of the land, the love the people have for each other and their clans. It is refreshing and fun. Enjoy!
The action and plot deserved 5 stars. Why I gave 4 stars was that some of the language was uncomprehending and few grammatical errors. Overall, really good book. Can't wait to read the next book.
