A foundling placed with the tutor of Illedrian royalty, she grew to be a talented fighter. After rising to the rank of lieutenant in the royal army, she proves her worth and thwarts the attempted assassination of the man she loves.
The selfless act will change her life forever and start a chain of events that will unlock her hidden past.
A lifelong California girl, Michelle Rabe tried the Hollywood thing but decided she preferred an author’s den to the actor’s trailer. She now lives in the Phoenix, AZ with her unhelpful author cat and a very understanding roommate. If you can’t find her in a cemetery with her camera you can find her online at: michellerabe.com
I'm going to start by saying this is not my normal genre. I do not normally listen to fantasy of any kind. After this book I know that I do enjoy Romantic Fantasy...which I never even knew existed.
This book had me very intrigued from the start. I love the idea of a female guard! Tough women are always my favorite. I loved how they were with each other. I rarely find a book that isn't about the chase but more about them trying to stay together against all odds. I liked that there was no real relationship drama like fighting for no real reason like every other book I've been reading. The world building was the best part for me because I do not like spending hours on the world before we even get to the story and this book has just the right amount. Very enjoyable for a non fantasy reader who loves a fairy tale :)
I really enjoyed that narration too! The accent was great!
I am not a huge fan of Fantasy, not because I don’t like it but because I tend to wander when the author is describing the world and building the story. But this book doesn’t have that! I was like yaya!
I loved the different characters. This world is different but so easy to navigate. I never once felt like I was confused.
Serena and Killian have to fight so much to be together. This is an incredible tail of fighting for what you want. And not accepting things just because, but fight for what you want. It’s kind of funny that both species think the same for their Royalty.
I also loved the narrator she brought all these character to life in such a way you want to hear more from her. Very enjoyable.
I am a fan of Ms. Rabe's. I really enjoyed the Morgan Blackstone Vampires series, but let me just say, she stepped up the game with Dragon's Heart. The writing is wonderful. The characters are brill. It's not about finding love, it's about keeping love. The odds against Serena and Killian would make the strongest person buckle. Those who stand between their HEA will make you want curse like you never have before. Get ready for the Dark Fey, secrets, lies, royalty, abuse of power, strong women, and hell yes... DRAGONS. This is a fantastic tale that will leave you wanting more of everything it offers. Congrats to Ms. Rabe!
I am new to reading the work of Michelle Rabe and this is the first book of hers that I have read. Serena and Killian are lifelong friends who fall in love with each other. The only problem is that he is in line to be king and she is a commoner who doesn’t know her back ground. Outside forces conspire against the couple to tear them apart. Ms. Rabe has written a beautifully classic love story in such a way that you feel all the emotions her characters are going through. There are three elements at work here: Humans, Dark Fey and the Dragon Fey. One is nearly extinct, the other is so very dark and twisted and the humans seem to be caught in the middle. There is love, friendship, loss and deception written throughout this book. So many parts had me standing and cheering for the couple and others, well, Fate truly plays a really big character and is a twisted witch that had me yelling at my kindle. Each character is rich in description and depth, the story leaps off the pages! This is a first book in a series that really setup the world and characters that I can’t wait to see in future books. I can’t wait for more Killian and Serena and their loyal friends – Ryan and Bronwynn (maybe they have their own story??) The story of Killian and Serena is so heartfelt and romantic, this is sure to be a binge worthy reading series, the only problem is that it is book one and two hasn’t been written yet! I received a copy for an honest review. 5 out of 5 stars.
I got to Beta read Dragon's Heart, and let me tell you... I EFFING LOVED THIS STORY!!! Serena and Killian can't seem to catch a break. Whether it's enemies behind scenes, duty and honor, their backgrounds, or their own stubborn selves getting in their own way, nothing ever goes right for them. There are characters that you're going to love to hate. Characters that you wished were real just to have the pleasure of spending time with them. But most and best of all... THERE ARE DRAGONS!!!! Big, beautiful, glorious dragons!!!! I'm not going to give away any plot or spoilers. Just believe me when I say you HAVE to read this book!
i knew i would love this book based on Michelle Rabe's vamp series, but i wasn't prepared for how much more i would love her dragons. Most dragon/love books i have read are the typical, sappy stars in the woman's eyes, head over heals, in love with the man. This book isnt not those books. They have to fight to KEEP their love alive. You will cuss out the author and want to ring the necks of the characters multiple times as you are reading this book, but whatever you do, dont give up on reading it! It is well worth the temper tantrums that you will have I promise!!! If i could give this book more then 5 stars i totally would do so!!!
This a great book for all ages! I loved it and my fifth-grade daughter enjoyed it with me. It is a great story with magically fantastic characters. I definitely recommend this book! Dragon’s Heart will not disappoint!
We looked forward to listening every day and it made the ride to school so much fun. At the end, my daughter was like, “Come ON! Mom, you have to get the second book now!” We can’t wait for the second book!
Absolutely loved loved this book. I have read her other works and this is my favorite so far. The authors use of imagery makes you think you are right there. There is such a depth to the characters that you find yourself loving some and despising others. I am anxiously awaiting the second book in this series. If dragons and magic and romance is what you are looking for in a book you will not be disappointed in this book or in this author!!!!!!
This was just great! I truly loved these characters, their sass and attitude really made me like them and feel more connected lol. The trials, the choices (which I TOTALLY screamed at Serena for!) made it more realistic. People don't make the perfect choice the first time around, ad I really enjoyed reading a fantasy story with imperfect characters. The plot is good, very interesting, and I thoroughly enjoyed spending my time in this world! Another to add to my Definitely Continuing Series list!
I wasn't entirely keen on the narrator, which is a personal thing. The strong emphasis every time there was, "he" or "she" bugged me. I'm not sure why. At first I thought the word may have been in italics in the writing, but it was pretty much Every. Single. Time. This is a thing that may not bother anyone else, though! Otherwise, her voice and accent are quite pleasing.
I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys fantasy, dragons, and romance.
This was my first ever Michelle Rabe book, and I am definitely going to listen to her other books.
I love the Fantasy Genre, and although the character types in this book has been mentioned in other books, I can't wait to see what other creatures the Author creates in this world.
I enjoyed all the characters in this book even the nefarious ones. My favourite is the strong female character of Serena, the fact that their military is full of females, all though this book is set in a different time I still feel that it has been moving with the times that men and woman are equal. My two favourite side characters will definitely be Ryan and Bronwynn.
I would definitely recommend this book to other Young Adults and Fantasy Readers.
The narration was a bit slow for me so I sped it up. The narrator told this story beautifully. You could clearly differentiate between characters, you could also feel the emotion through out this book.
The only negative for me was that I sometimes got confused with real time, dreams and thoughts.
I can't wait to listen to the next book in this series.
Dragon’s Heart is the first book in the Dragon Fey Saga by Michelle Rabe. Serena Harlowe always knew her place.
Dragon’s Heart is a multilayered start to a series that offer high fantasy, romance, and fierce female characters. Killian is the human prince, fierce and fair but tired of doing his family's bidding and dealing with the marriage mart when he already found the woman of his dreams. Serena is a foundling that has been raised around the palace and worked hard to become part of the guard that protects the kingdom. Neither know that the Dark Fey, which everyone assumes are gone, are pulling strings and trying to take over, while the Dragon Fey are not quite extinct either and both are much closer to things than anyone might expect. The characters each are multi dimensional, and have growth as the book progresses, this is true both the main characters and the secondary characters. Royal expectations, life, and love are all on the line as Serena's past comes to light and best friends turned lovers have bigger obstacles to over come than either could have expected. Secondary characters and the expanding world make this an extremely interesting and entertaining read. I am looking forward to seeing where all this goes next.
Dragon’s Heart is a solid opening to what promises to be an interesting series. I enjoyed the character and world building, and while many questions are answered there are some interesting options left open at the end of the book. The balance between satisfying readers and leaving them looking forward to the next book is done close to perfectly here.
*I was given a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I have to be honest. When one of my friends asked me if I would like to read and review this book, I really didn't think it was going to be a book that I would enjoy. Paranormal reads are not my thing and when I read that this one was about dark fey, dragons, magic, and romance? Well, I almost said no. However, I am so glad that I gave it a try because it turned out to be one of the best books that I have read all year!
Serena and Killian have been friends since childhood. Over the years, their friendship has grown into love. However, their love is not an easy one. Killian is in line to be the next king of Illedria, and Serena is a simple commoner, or so everyone thinks. When her true background and ancestry are revealed, it only serves to complicate things further. As if that is not enough to deal with, it seems that fate and outside forces are at work to keep them apart as well. Is their love strong enough to survive, or will duty and deception keep them apart forever?
There is really only one word to accurately describe this book and that is "phenomenal". The author's use of imagery is outstanding! It draws the reader into the character's world and makes you feel as if you are right along side them experiencing everything as they do. This is my first time reading the work of Michelle Rabe, but it certainly won't be the last. This is an amazing start to a new series! I can't wait to read more about theses characters and their friends in the books to come! Great job, Michelle Rabe!!
I guess I will start by saying I'm a very impatient person, that being said I need the next book now. I need to find out what comes next. This story is very detailed in the history of the time and setting. It pulls you into the setting and you get to see the area and experience the country. There is great detail in the hierarchy of how things worked in that time period, how society was run then. I think it is great that they revolve around a matriarchal society in a time when when women were mostly the "weaker sex". Serena is an extremely strong female, becoming a lieutenant in the royal guard and entrusted to teach the prince about sword play and protection. The fact that there is so much more to all the things that are going on just keep you reading to find it out. The prince is enamoured by the strong woman and they are hoping to be together forever. All good plans come to an end, this is where the otherworldly forces come into play. Now I get my dragons and the dark fae, cause you always need a bad guy or guys. I'm looking forward to more of the story and will be waiting impatiently for it.
As a new reader of Michelle Rabe's work, I really had no idea what to expect from this book. I am a huge dragon junkie, so thought why not? Well, let me tell you...I am SO glad I chose to read this book! The world she has created is enchanting and sucked me in from the very beginning. The way she describes everything in such glorious detail will make you question whether you're sitting, holding a book or actually there experiencing the trials and joys with her characters! Serena & Killian are both fantastically complex characters with great heart and spirit. There is no way to read this story without cheering them on and at the same time wanting to brutally punish those who stand in their way. I always "claim" not to be a fan of love stories. BUT Dragon's Heart has proved me a liar. I love this love story. The attention to detail, the feeling of slipping away into this other world, the relationships, the secrets, lies, manipulations, their devotion...OH & did I mention the DRAGONS?!? OMG...I'm obsessed with them & Michelle Rabe knows how to spin a dragon tale! Seriously, I cannot wait until the next book! I'll be first in line to get it!
I am a fan of Michelle Rabe's books. Morgan Blackstone was one of my first forays into vampires and Dragon's Heart is my first proper Dragon book.
I was not sure what to expect so was delighted to get caught up in Sabrina and Killian's story of everyday things (for them). Killian being tutored in the art of sword fighting by Sabrina is exciting and has the potential to be bloody. Killian standing for hours bored as his grandmother and father listen to their subjects.
Running in the background is the knowledge that no one lives forever and treachery could easily drop them into war. Also there is a long kept secret about Sabrina that threatens the kingdom.
Knowing nothing of this Sabrina and Killian carry on as normal, best friends since childhood.
Ms. Rabe provides blood, guts and many, many dragons. She has written the perfect book to set up for the second in this two book series.
When I finished reading it my overwhelming thought was "lovely". It was lovely and I so look forward to the next book.
This book is so amazing. I knew the story was going to be excellent when I had to read the last few chapters shortly after beginning to ease my anxiety. I knew the journey for the main characters were not going to be easy, so I had to know what was in store. That is a quirk in my reading style, but just confirmed my feelings about how great the book is. First and foremost, the romance between Serena and Killian was wonderful. When I read about relationships labeled “OTP” – Serena and Killian are near the top of that list. They’re both strong heroes in their own right - both intelligent, passionate, honorable people who put others before themselves. It’s no wonder that they’re so strongly linked to each other. But like very good fantasy books, there’s forces in their world that are trying to stop them, and the political intrigue at court keeps the reader on their toes. Plus – dragons!!! (My favorite) The end of the story is bittersweet, setting the reader up for the next book in the series. I am very much looking forward to reading more.
Thanks to Netgalley and Buoni Amici Press for giving me this book to review.
Dragon’s Heart started really interestingly with forbidden romances and different races, however, by the end I didn’t care about the characters as there was not enough world building and the story didn’t grab me. I was not a fan of Killian or Serena by the end of the book as I felt they made irritating decisions and behaved really inconsistently. I could not get on with this book as I could not connect with the characters.
I've never read any of Michelle's books before. I appreciated her candid intro and agree with her thoughts on world-building. Let me just say that this book sucked me in and I couldn't put it down! This is a classic love story and it was fantastic! The only disappointment for me was the way it ended, with no resolution to the story. There had so better be more books in this series and they need to come out now!
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Overall I loved the book. I had a bit of trouble getting into it but it was well worth the wait. I want other readers to know that the background is absolutely necessary to understanding what happens and that it would take a lot more to describe our own society. It can be confusing at times but is a fantastic story with diverse and complex characters.
Best Fantasy since Wind through the Keyhole by Stephen King. A spellbinding , tale of honor, lies, and dragon! Dragons people! I have not read anything like it before. She truly has a gift, this book was magic
This tale started off strong. Serena and Prince Killian have been friends for years and are in love with each other. They are comfortable with one another. While they don’t know how they will ever manage to be together in wedlock, they are ready to face the challenge together.
There’s plenty of scheming going on. Killian’s grandmother doesn’t want a lowly orphan (Serena) wed to her grandson (second in line to the throne). While Killian’s dad doesn’t put in much of an appearance, he isn’t willing to go against his own mother on this issue. However, there’s this past that has been kept hidden from both Serena and Killian. That secret could grant them the freedom to marry or rip them apart.
And once Serena learns that secret, things get a little silly. Serena no longer feels worthy of Killian’s love and spends way too much time worried what he will think of her new looks. Serena started off as a lieutenant in the royal army training Killian in sword play. This means she has callouses, a partial tan, grit under her nails, and possibly a few scars. Alas, she turns into a silly woman concerned with fashion and such as the story goes on. I really liked her in the beginning and I was sad to see all her good, practical traits get pushed aside for dramatic romance.
Killian also gets silly. He was basically a sidekick to begin with, having only a little personality and just his royal status to bring to the table. I was hoping he’d grow with the tale but he back slid a bit becoming a figure that gets pushed around by his grandmother and fiance.
Now there are worthy foes in this story. The Dark Fey have been working in the background for generations and are largely responsible for decimating the Dragon Fey a generation ago. Serena has to learn her true family’s history and culture but Otis (her adviser) withholds a key bit of info that strongly affected how she handled Killian. I felt that this was done just to add drama so I felt a little cheated when it was revealed to Serena near the end of the book.
I really liked the side character Ryan. He’s friends with both Serena and Killian and he works really hard to get the two back together while also respecting their wishes. There were times I just wanted to knock all their heads together but I also could see why Ryan played it like he did. I also liked Bronwyn, another Dragon Fey, as she provides a shoulder to cry on for Serena. I expect she will continue to be a good friend to Serena in the series.
The story leaves the two lovers in an unconventional relationship, which was fine since it isn’t the classic boring happy ending. However, by the end I was a bit fatigued by the romance. I’m more of a Fantasy Genre person and there was very little world building or magic systems in this tale. So once the main characters became boring, there wasn’t much to fall back on. All told, it was OK. 3/5 stars.
The Narration: Karen-Eileen Gordon did an amazing job on this narration. She had the perfect creepy voices for the Dark Fey. I also liked her old lady imperious voice for Killian’s grandmother. Her male voices were believable and she had distinct voices for all the characters. There plenty of emotions in this tale with the weepy romance and Gordon did a god job portraying those as well. 5/5 stars.
This is a lovely book for teens. It is slow-paced, and the focus is on love, trust, deceit, and duty to the people dependent on a leader.
There is very little violence, or action, most of the story is about two lovers who can't seem to find a common fortune because the duties of each lie elsewhere, and there seems no way to find common ground. And so, they are torn apart and have to ask themselves what they really want.
There's some chaste kissing, and at one point a little more, but it is vague enough that teens can read it.
Not being among the target group, but a die-hard fantasy fan, this book was too slow for my liking, and I missed the world building, which I find essential, but I think it's perfect for teens and everyone who isn't into world building but just wants the story.
Karen-Eileen Gordon did a good job at the narration, her pace matching the slow pace of the book perfectly. I usually like a slow pace in narrations, but for once, I sped it up, because I thought it was too slow even for my liking.
I asked for, and received a complimentary copy and I chose to willingly post an honest review.
Michelle Rabe is a brilliant author, I loved this story of persistence, love, heartbreak and a kickass heroine! There's action, danger, intrigue, true love and DRAGONS! Serena and Killian's relationship is not easy. Between nefarious people, honor and duty, and royal abuse of power the odds are stacked against them. The fight to be together is epic. Serena is a lieutenant in the King's guard, and thus made me love this book even more. I adore strong female characters and Serena is fierce, brave, loyal, honest and kind. The world building is fantastic, the characters are brilliant and did I mention dragons?! Happy reading!
Serena and Killian are friends and fell in love with each other with one problem . He is in line to be king and she is a commoner who doesn’t know her back ground. Outside forces conspire against the couple to tear them apart. It is a beautiful classic love story in such a way that you feel all the emotions her characters are going through. Narration is ver good.
I received a free audiobook copy in exchange for my review
Michelle Rabe tells a story of love, dark fairies, dragon fade, Princes and princesses. Plots and schemers. A lovely clean story with very little sex scenes in it. Only lightly describe. No corse language. There is some violence worst one being she ripped out his heart and destroyed it. I’m looking forward to the next story. Narration by Karen-Eileen Gordon , I had to speed up a little to 1.25. Otherwise her performance was good. Giving gaps between chapters showing clearly where new chapters began. She brings the story to life. Her accent adds a little something to the story and the characters are all have distinct voices. This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher free of charge for a honest, unbiased review.
I’m a little torn with this one. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters were good but I didn’t connect with them as much as I would of liked to. There’s nothing wrong with the book I just struggled to bond with them. I’m hoping the second book will hook me. Excellent narration.
Great start to a new series. I can’t wait to see how Serena and Killian’s “arrangement” works out. If they will be able to stay together despite the evil forces working against them. Talking about sleeping with the enemy!!! And how Serena embraces her new role.

Like the author, i don't care for the world-building which is the de-facto standard for epic fantasy. In the prologue (ch 2 in audible), the author gives us all the background needed in a few minutes. I've never seen that done in an epic fantasy before, and I LOVE IT. I really like how the romance revolves around friends who've known each other a long time. They like each other for who they are, their personalities, and what they do for each other. So many "romances" are focused on lust where each character constantly describes each other by their attractive appearance.
The narrator uses an English accent, and I like listening to her. She also does the unstable creature voice very well instead of just reading.
The book was provided by NetGallery in exhange for my honest review.
This is a very special book which is all about forbidden relationships between prince Killian and Serena. First we see Serena is just a normal girl who is in love with the prince. But soon she discovers that she is not who she thought she was and her world is doomed due to her lover is about to marry to another girl. Oh, I did feel for her and for the prince. Everything was against them. BUT Serena and Killian will fight for each other until the end. Irregardless of who they really are, what roles they have to play.
So what did I like about this book? Well, I like the idea that strong feelings will survive anything and it was nice to read about people who love each other unconditionally. Also, I really enjoyed the world of Fays! Although, I wish I could read more about Dragon and Dark Feys.
At the same time, I found that behaviour of Killian and Serena was illogical most of the time, sometimes even irritating, and they created most of their troubles by their own actions. At the beginning, I wanted them to rebel against all traditions so badly and just be together.
Still, the story isn't over and I hope that Killian and Serena will get themselves out of self-created mess and will be happy together.
P.S. I really didn't like Ryan! I felt that he is to blame for miscommunication between Killian and Serena! And he was the one who encourage Killian give up on Serena! I was almost sure that he is the bad guy LOL
