An ebook containing the first six volumes of award-winning and bestselling author Isobelle Carmody's beloved epic fantasy series The Obernewtyn Chronicles.
Isobelle Carmody began the first novel of her highly acclaimed Obernewtyn Chronicles while she was still in high school. The series has established her at the forefront of fantasy writing in Australia.
In addition to her young-adult novels, such as the Obernewtyn Chronicles and Alyzon Whitestarr, Isobelle's published works include several middle-grade fantasies. Her still-unfinished Gateway Trilogy has been favorably compared to The Wizard of Oz and the Chronicles of Narnia. The Little Fur quartet is an eco-fantasy starring a half-elf, half-troll heroine and is fully illustrated by the author herself.
Isobelle's most recent picture book, Magic Night, is a collaboration with illustrator Declan Lee. Originally published in Australia as The Wrong Thing, the book features an ordinary housecat who stumbles upon something otherworldly. Across all her writing, Isobelle shows a talent for balancing the mundane and the fantastic.
Isobelle was the guest of honor at the 2007 Australian National Science Fiction Convention. She has received numerous honors for her writing, including multiple Aurealis Awards and Children's Book Council of Australia Awards.
She currently divides her time between her home on the Great Ocean Road in Australia and her travels abroad with her partner and daughter.
Librarian's note: Penguin Australia is publishing the Obernewtyn Chronicles in six books, and The Stone Key is book five. In the United States and Canada this series is published by Random House in eight books; this Penguin Australia book is split into two parts and published as Wavesong (Book Five) and The Stone Key (Book Six).
It’s not always that you get a strong female protagonist in sci-fi fantasy novels. Isobelle Carmody wrote Obernewtyn Chronicles with just that and few other strong characters.
Elspeth Gordie, the main protagonist in the series, knew that she is a part of something bigger when she was startled by a cat that cussed in her head. Apparently she has the ability to communicate telepathically with animals and also to other humans (provided they, too, have the ability). Not only that, she has other powers as well, such as mind-control and...killing someone.
But she doesn’t want to uncover that. We are often told that women have more empathy than men, as well as being one that’s more nurturing than the other. Well, that's a stereotype and Elspeth is none of that. However, she does her best to be more understanding of her friends.
Along with the others that have super mind powers, she goes on a quest to destroy the machines that could make another devastating nuclear war. The current world she lives in is the aftermath of the Great White (they called it), and there’s barely enough for everyone to survive.
This series is as great as Jodi Lynn Anderson’s May Bird Trilogy, and recommended for girls who want to look up to strong girls in fiction.
This has to be one of the best fantasy series ever written. It is one I read as a teenager and then I waited....and waited......and waited.....until Carmody FINALLY released her long anticipated epic finale- the red queen in 2015/16. It is a classic timeless fantasy series unlike any other I've read. * For Elspeth freedom is, like so much else after the Great White, a memory. It was a time known as the Age of Chaos. In a final explosive flash everything was destroyed. The few who survived banded together and formed a Council for protection. But people like Elspeth-mysteriously born with powerful mental abilities-are feared by the Council and hunted down like animals...to be destroyed. * This series is INCREDIBLE, it begins in a dystopian post apocalyptic society. Survival and human prejudice are frequent themes throughout. It has elements of magic, sci-fi, adventure, romance, action and intrgiue. It is a heartwarming coming of age series and is mature but would also be suitable for young adults. Carmody's style of writing has always been a favourite mine (along with Tamora Pierce) and you are easily swept up by the story, characters and emotions. The themes in this novel are somewhat similar to the Harry potter series. I guarantee you the ending will not be what you expect, I still dont know how I feel about it personally. * Note: This is a very long series consisting of 7 books and several of the books are huge, so be prepared for a long read. 🤗
It took me a good two and half chapters to get into this series, the writing style felt stilted, but once the story grabbed me I was swept away and read 1-6 back to back and loved it. I am so glad I only read this after Book 7 the Red Queen was released so the story felt ended. The characters are well rounded, the world building was believable and I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that animals are included as in depth fleshed out characters int heir own right. It is an interesting story with many twists and turns and surprises.
