If i could write as eloquently as JL Brooks, this review might convey more of the beauty that is Distractions.
Violet Phillips is a woman like so many of us - steel poured over porcelain, her outer self belying the gossamer-thin ceramic shell around her heart, pocked and veined with crackled fissures. In truth, some were caused by demons of her own creation; her mistakes, the pains she caused and wounds she inflicted whether intentional or not.
As for the other chips, some were the result of the usual bumps and bruises of life but some came with proper names: Connor and Shepard. The two men are woven in and out of Violet's life bringing colorful banter, erotic charms, baggage and betrayals.
And then there is Dr David Robertson, a.k.a. "Doc". Violet's professional life holds no small amount of anxiety as she struggles to make sense of her mentor's strange behavior just before his unbelievable disappearance.
Violet is very real in her her fragility and her strength; the men in her life are no less realistically drawn and this story resonates with the emotional highs and lows of love, betrayal, forgiveness, traumas both physical and psychological, intrigue, second chances and just plain taking chances.
I loved every page.

Distractions…where to start? I was honored to have the opportunity to have beta read for this amazing author. There are books that are good and then there are books that are great. Ladies and gentlemen, this book is one of the great ones.

I was captivated from the beginning, and the authors unbelievable way of connecting you to the story through her literacy, keeps you intrigued until the very end.

Distractions, is a story of, well to be honest Distractions. Namely in the form of a sexy, intellectual man named Shepard. Now this isn’t your typical romance novel, it is much more. There is suspense, anguish and the in the end, when you finally step off of the rollercoaster ride that J.L Brooks led you on, you feel a feeling of satisfaction from reading.

This is going to be epic, and I am so pleased to have read it. Add it today if you haven’t already and trust me once this is released on May 23rd you are not going to want to miss out!

What a roller coaster read, before I write a review I often read other people's to see what they thought, and all of them hit the nail on the head. I do admit at times I got a little confused and even now I've finished it the plan that everyone was in on the demise of Violet still has me a little confused, but overall this is a fabulous story with lots of angst, first you hate Conner then you love Conner then you hate him again!! And the writing of Violets emotions was outstanding thank goodness Shepard didn't let us down, was he really angry that his father actions, as Violet thought, were because of her? Didn't really get to the bottom of that one, great read looking forward to more from JL Brooks.

for great book reviews, new release updates, giveaways and more!!

Stay alert, Violet. Distractions will be your undoing.

Distractions was not what I expected. It was so much more, far exceeding my expectations to the point that I have found myself mulling over parts of the book, re-reading chapters as I write this review and thinking about the characters and events since finishing it. My challenge now is writing this review without spoilers (which hopefully I have achieved) because for me, a significant chunk of the enjoyment was unravelling the story and I don't want to take that away from anyone else.

In the Prologue we meet 14 year old Violet Phillips: a complex mix of intelligence and emotion. Drawn to the gypsy culture that would descend upon her home every summer, and under the guidance of her older sister Vivienne, Violet learnt to belly dance and would lose herself in the fantasy world she could create as she danced. After her sister left, Violet struggled to balance her reality and turned to drug use as a means of escape. In amongst the drug stupors, she manages to find some solace in studying literature, amongst other things, and somehow escapes the complete destruction and desolation experienced by most hard drug users.

Distractions then moves forward eight years to a time when Violet is 26 years old and has established herself as lead Research Assistant in the lab of Dr David Robertson, a renowned geneticist working on developing what is hopoed to be a revolution in genetic therapy. Violet holds "Doc" in very high regard. He is her "mentor, father figure and knight in shining armor" so what happens one night between the two, followed by the inexplicable (and apparently sinister) disappearance of Dr Robertson impacts Violet significantly.

From here we travel a series of journeys with Violet as she seeks to understand herself, her past and the impact this has for her future. Violet must balance many 'distractions' on her journey, which is filled with mystery, intrigue, deception, romance and ultimately a discovery of just how strong one woman can be.

It would be remiss of me not to mention Shephard in this review. Shephard is Violet's neighbour and source of support following the events with Dr Robertson. The two have a chemistry that is heart warming, not to mention the intimacy of their connection and I'm not just referring to the sex scenes! Despite Violet's reservations, primarily due to their age difference but also due to the timing of them coming together, she cannot deny her feelings for Shephard or just how right their relationship feels:
"If someone has the ability to make you glow in the darkness, they must be remarkable. That does not mean there is something wrong with you. It means there is something right. Only you would believe the worst."

Violet is a wonderful character. She is an ecclectic mix of her life: teenage gypsy, drug user, erotic dancer, academic, researcher, sister, friend. She is complex and carries a hurt from her past (and Connor Lewis) that is in part responsible for both her achievements and her introversion. Violet's life is not what it seems and Distractions follows her path to discovering just what it should be. It is more than a love story, so much more. Violet must manoeuvre herself, as if in a giant chess game, in order to remain whole. Each move is made in the absence of the full picture and she must determine who she can trust along the way as she evaluates and makes each move:
"... no one would listen, they can't see the truth. They are so wrapped up in trying to figure out what their opponent's next move is, they can't conceive that maybe there is someone who can see the big picture. He can see every piece on the board and every game that is played. It's not just about him shouting down; they have to let him know they can hear him, and trust him. But submission is a very hard thing for most people. They need to feel like they are in control, even if it is an illusion.
...
It could be so much easier, Violet, if they would just stop for a second and listen."

I really enjoyed Distractions. It requires a level of concentration to make some of the connections but it is worth the investment. The conclusion was nothing like I thought it would be and everything I hoped.

There is no doubting the beauty and sheer natural ability of J.L. Brooks' writing. DISTRACTIONS has a sophistication and flow to the prose which leave me absolutely stunned over this debut author!

The author takes us through various periods of Violet Phillips' life, and when we first meet her, a good friend and teacher has gone missing. This event leads to the beginning of a downfall for Violet. However, her young, handsome neighbor, Shepard Leone, comes to her rescue...in more ways than one. When next we see Violet, time has passed, she has re-established herself in a new career, and the past bubbles up, trying to consume her. We're introduced to Violet's sister and her ex-boyfriend, as well as her back-story. The one constant seems to be Shepard. He seems to find a way in when Violet needs him, and he brings her back to life.

I want to get my quibble with this book out of the way first. I mentioned the sophistication, beauty and natural ability of J.L. Brooks' writing, and, because there was such sophistication and obvious talent, it make the one thing I have a very hard time overlooking stand out all the more. The need for contractions in dialog, in order to make conversation flow and feel authentic, cannot be overstated in my opinion. I think I understand why it happens. But, regardless, people, real people, speak in contractions. When dialog isn't written that way, it comes off as stilted and odd. On rare occasions it can be overlooked, but, when the rest of the writing is so eloquent...the lack sticks out like a big, red target.

Now that I have that out of the way, let me say that I don't know that I have ever been quite so impressed with the ability of a debut author before!! I cannot overstate, despite my quibble above, the remarkable talent that is J.L. Brooks. I'm still in awe of her gift with the written word. Honestly, in my opinion, that is the true star of this book! This author will wrap you in the most luxurious and well-formed prose. And, yet, for all that, there is authenticity and reality here, as well, in her descriptions and the internal thoughts of the characters. Wow. I cannot imagine where J.L. Brooks will venture next, but I demand to come along for the ride!

Violet was an interesting, complex character that came off just slightly cold to me. I had just a little bit of trouble working up sympathy for her. But, she did keep me glued to the page!

Violet's ex-boyfriend I found thoroughly compelling, thuggish and really sexy ;-) Mmmm, Mmmm. I'll take one of him, please!

Shepard. Shepard, Shepard, Shepard. What a lovely, loving, sexy, sweet, caring, nurturing, beautiful soul. What. A. Man.

Final thoughts? Wow. I cannot imagine where J.L. Brooks will venture next, but I demand to come along for the ride! If you're a lover of words and authors who use them remarkably well, treat yourself to DISTRACTIONS by J.L. Brooks!!

“If someone has the ability to make you glow in the darkness, they must be remarkable. That does not mean there is something wrong with you. It means there is something right.”

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book and I absolutely could not wait to read it after talking with J.L. Brooks. I also cannot believe this is her first book, AMAZING!! She is beyond talented and I am so glad she is sharing her gift with the reading world.

“Everyone who enters your life is there for one of two reasons. To bring you closer to the person you can be, or distract you from fulfilling that potential.”

This book starts by us meeting a young Violet, a girl trying to find herself. We learn she has two loves belly dancing and a man, Connor Lewis. Connor was a first love, a love that left her scarred. We are then moved to a Violet now doing research for the University of Cincinnati, but soon Violet's world is turned upside when her role model, Dr. Robertson, puts her in a situation and then is gone, stay with me because we are about to meet Shepard. Shepard comes on the scene and let us just say this man is not only HOT but he heals Violet, we watch them fall in love and we watch Violet give herself to him and not going to lie I did the same.

“I wanted to stay suspended in this bubble with Shepard,”

I was in a happy place everything was perfect and then it happened, you know what, accidents, distractions and Violet is forced into a decision.

“With a laugh, I managed to sob out, “why does crying have to be so ugly?”

You know that moment when you are saying oh holy hell, there is the emotional whiplash I love so much in a book. Now we are watching Violet accept an award and her life is on track but oh what is that, oh yes a distraction, she gets a phone call. One that pulls her back to Colorado and back to face old wounds and of course once she starts to pick at the wound she comes face to face with the one man she never wanted to see again.

“Connor and I were two tornados. Bound to destroy everything in our path. Separating us was the only hope they had for me: coming out of that in one piece.”

Well Hello Connor aren’t you beautiful and broken and HOT and I forgive you. Wait this is Violet’s story not mine. But we watch Connor and we become memorized, we watch him try for forgiveness. We watch him being what Violet needs. Connor made me feel every emotion possible I was in love, I hated him, I cried over him, I wanted to shake him, I wanted to hug him and I wanted to experience him. DAMN THAT BEAUTIFUL MAN.

“If insanity meant living in a world where I got to feel like this every moment, I would gladly embrace it.”

Violet is then handed yet another decision, her and these damn decisions but this is the one that brings the book almost full circle. The one that brings us back to my first love remember Shepard. One word PERFECTION seriously the man is perfect. Beautiful, smart, honest, awkward, make love to me NOW Shepard.

“He was striking no….he was gorgeous.”

This book was everything and more, it grabs your attention from the beginning and it takes you on ride that doesn’t stop until the last sentence and JL made sure she left you feeling so complete. She had me so connected with these characters when I was done I wanted to hug her for the experience.

All I can say is . . .

“I cannot promise you that it is going to be easy, but only that it will be worth it.”

Oh how do I start to review this amazing book? I had the honor to beta read this book by the lovely JL Brooks and it was an absolute emotional rollercoaster from the get go.

She pulls you in from the get go and her writing style is superb. She has such a way of writing this story that will keep you guessing until the very end. Some of the supsense books I have read before you can pretty much guess "who done it" but not with this one, I was completely blown away at the end of the book.

She writes with such amazing detail you feel like you are there living this story out. The main characters in her book; Violet, Shepard and Connor are very well written and you feel a connection with each one of them. There were times where I ugly cried with them, wanted to crawl through and smack the crap out of them and one point I was fist pumping.

If you haven't added this book to your TBR list go do it now! This book is going to be EPIC and I look forward to reading more from this lovely and amazing author!

Ms Brooks seriously set the bar high for debut authors out there. Someone asked recently what was the latest book that made you stay up all night? This was it for me. As soon as I started the story it just grabbed me and I couldn’t let go until I was done.

While some may say that there was had way too much narration, I thought it was just right. At first I thought I would be bored with the scientific parts but the information given wasn’t too detailed – it was just enough to get by . The other parts of the story was more than detailed.

I love how she described every emotion. When Violet was happy I was happy, when she was depressed I was too. And yes I feel in love with Sheppard like everyone else and was heartbroken with how it ended. Then I found myself falling in love with Connor also. He loved her, he really did but why did he have to be such a douche twice over? When she cried, I cried for her. Then I started getting angry at the author… how could you play with my emotions like that?

That is how good the writing was to me.

"Every fiber of my being was tied into the man holding me. The messed up part of me kept repeating that I would hurt him, yet the long forgotten goodness within shouted for me to let him love me back...."

I also loved how she took us to Europe and how authentic the descriptions of the locales were. For one not being as well-traveled I found myself looking up these places and sure enough they do exist and appreciated that she put enough time into describing those experiences through Vy’s eyes.

The only thing that was a little challenging about this one was you really had to pay attention. The book brings you back and forth into Vy’s timeline and if you didn’t read into it then you might end up confused. I suggest you just read though it. It will be so worth it in the end.

My only comment or suggestion? I wish I could’ve read into Sheppard’s POV. I wanted to know how he felt that first time, what he thought of his father and that incident and I want to know what he was doing those six years and how he ended up in the Dear Doctors service. I’m hoping J.L. Brooks decides to write Sheppard’s story.

If you are looking for something more suspenseful yet still full of emotion, passion and romance than this one is for you.

Casting:

It was mentioned in a release event that Charlie Siem was the authors muse for Sheppard. My choice for Violet is Kate Hudson.

Going into Distractions I was expecting your usual romance...but I was WRONG!!! Yes, there was romance but there was also a TON of suspense & mystery! The story starts with a brief glimpse of Violet at 14 and her life and we quickly fast forward to her in her 20's. She's a research assistant to the prominent genetics professor Dr. David Robertson. The story takes off from the beginning, there's a situation between the good Dr and Violet that leaves her feeling

I couldn't stop reading after that! I had to find out what that was all about. After being terribly shaken up Violet found comfort in the arms of her friend and neighbor, Shepard...ahhhh Shapard! Shepard had loved Violet from across the hall for years but since he was 5 years younger Violet was always against taking their relationship further. I was glad she finally got over that.

However, like I said earlier this is more than a romance story. This is a suspense story that made me have a death grip on my kindle!  It was like a giant puzzle of who, what, where, when, why, and how and JL did a fantastic putting all the pieces together! There were more twists and turns than an amusement park ride!

All in all Distractions was an exciting page turning read that was difficult to put down. There were a lot of

"I never saw THAT coming" moments which I enjoyed!

I had the opportunity for beta reading from the lovely JL Brooks & was honored to enjoy her first piece of work.

While reading Distractions, I experienced a plethora of feelings, and I know other readers will too.

Ever have a dream and aren't quite sure if it was real or imagined? Well, that's the roller coaster of a ride Violet is going to experience. There are two men who've had her heart completely, Connor and Shepard. While she still has emotional scarring from Connor, Violet has learned to trust, love and heal again, thanks to Shepard.

While doing research for the University of Cincinnati, Violet's world comes crashing with the suspected death of her role model, Dr. Robertson, and the roller coaster ride now begins.

Suddenly, life isn't what Violet knew. Due to certain life changing events, the one love who gave her purpose for breathing is gone and now the distractions come.

Once Violet starts piecing her life back together & she comes face to face with Connor and Shepard again, will she have the courage to face demons, forgive and love again? And at what cost??

This jaw-dropping, heart pounding book will literally have you sitting on the edge of your chair begging for more. JL Brooks' writing style captivates you to feel every emotion of the characters from happiness, tears of joy, ugly crying, laughter, suspense & wanting to smack the characters at times.

If you haven't already added Distractions to your TBR list, please do so. This is a book you won't want to miss.

JL Brooks has set her standards high with this book!! I can not believe that this is her debut novel!!! Her writing is impeccable!!

"Stay alert, Violet. Distractions will be your undoing." - Love this quote!!

I was at the edge of my seat reading this the whole time. The entire story was written so well and JL did a superb job of weaving all the pieces together! All the situations that Violet had to go through will leave you breathless and shocked. Speaking of breathless - Shepard. WOW! His undying devotion to Violet and his love for her is awesome. He had my heart and soul from the beginning!!

"You know, Violet, when I would watch you sometimes and you would have your hands between your legs, I wondered what it would be like to have my hands there, making you feel that way - causing your chest to rise, gasping for air."

However - this is not a true romance book! Yes, we have the love and romance what but makes this book great is the drama and suspense!! I love a book that keeps me guessing at what is going to happen. I never once was able to figure anything out - so many damn twists. I LOVED IT!!! EDGE OF MY SEAT AMAZING!!!

"What do you know about fate, Violet? How do you know that I didn't do this on purpose just so I could show you that you are not in control?"

Seriously - this book is beyond amazing!!! It's a one hell of a roll-coaster ride - you won't want to get off!! You do not want to miss out on this!!

4 stars. This book had me on a rollercoaster from the moment I started Chapter 1; I was so into this story that I didn't get a chance to sleep all until the morning. Wow, I have to admit, I thought that Violet was going back to that Dickwad of her Ex-Fiance. But how the fact of what the hell she was involve to, was remarkable. One time I really thought she was a goner when Shepard's dad started to go crazy on her. But what I was more upset, how can she apologize to Shepard because she didn't do anything wrong she was the dayum victim; Although what did urked me was how she was so depressed, very emotional, in a blink of an eye she just cried or have a panic attack or anxiety. I understand she like rough sex but to what point is enough. Kudos to Ms. Brooks this book was an enlightment. Please continue writing, I would like to read more. I applaud you!

Enjoyable yet mindf**kable. This book was a wicked awesome game of twister. During the first part of the book I must admit to a few pages of re-reading here and there. The time periods skip a bit and I had trouble orienting myself.
I found the characters likable or hate able ( but in a good way). It was easy for me to attach to Violet yet there were times i felt she became gullible. A few times her predictability was to continue the storyline but it was minor enough not to effect the enjoyment of the story.
I was and remain team Shepard-good lord he was delicious.
This wasn't a fast read for me. I did get mired down about half way through but was pleasantly rewarded.
Must say bath tub scene on the boat broke my heart but for me when a scene elicits that much emotion that is a super good thing.
Fun read.

MY REVIEW:

4 1/2 Stars****

"If someone has the ability to make you glow in the darkness, they must be remarkable. That does not mean there is something wrong with you. It means there is something right. Only you would believe the worst.

Whoa. Okay. I'm still kind of processing my thoughts on what I've just read. What can I say that will do it justice without giving anything away? I really loved this book. It captured my attention and did not let go until the last word.

This is a story about Violet Phillips and her crazy, exciting, depressing, up and down life. As a child, she lived with her family in the Colorado mountains following a gypsy way of life. She learned to belly dance and be carefree. When her sister, Vivienne leaves Violet at 14 years old she gets out of control with drugs and alcohol. Thankfully she avoids the devastation that usually comes with that lifestyle and gets clean.

Fast forward and Violet is 26 years old and a teachers assistant to her beloved mentor Doc. When Doc disappears, Violet is once again sole crushed. She learns that her neighbor, Shepard (swoon and drool) has been watching her through her window for a while. She finds solace in Shepard's arms and they begin an exciting and loving relationship.

The events that take place over the next six years are heartbreaking. Violet faces many distractions and finds she doesn't know who she can trust. She spirals into a deep depression. She just wants to be happy and she is finding that elusive. What will become of her? Where will her life take her next? Does she even want to continue living?

Just when you think you have it all figured out, another twist punches you in the face. JL Brooks is a fantastic writer and has an amazing ability to draw the reader in and not let go. I look forward to reading more from her.

*Note* - The only thing that bugged me a tiny bit was the amount of dialogue spoken without contractions. I'm a fast talker so maybe that was why? Ha

*I was provided an ARC for a fair review*

“Everyone who enters your life is there for one of two reasons. To bring you closer to the person you can be, or distract you from fulfilling that potential.”

This is one of those reviews where I do not want to give away too much since part of the fun of this book is figuring it all out. This book is not your typical love story...although there are actually two love stories in it. But it has aspects of a suspenseful psychological thriller as well. I have to admit that at times I felt a little lost or disjointed since there were various events and people that at times did not seem to flow or match up. There were some flashbacks and then there were several significant time jumps that progressed the story way ahead. But I had to keep reading to know where this story was going. And as I kept reading, I got more invested. And I started to realize that it is not as random as it seems. Stories can connect in ways that you would not expect and every action has a reaction.

"Stay alert, Violet. Distractions will be your undoing."

Violet's life is full of tragedies, changes, disappointments, and pain. She suffers loss and heartbreak, then moves on. But the past has a way of coming back when you least expect it. And the emotional scars do not disappear. She is complex with many facets to her personality and past and showed personal growth over the years. And despite her heartbreak and emotional breakdowns, she was a strong character that overcame many challenges.

"How many chances does a person get before they run out? My whole life, I have barely escaped one accident after another. Most of them caused by my own stubbornness and stupidity, but I can't stop, no matter how hard I try. I run headfirst into the storm, despite being ripped to shreds in the past...."

She has two significant men in her life. Shepard...Oh, sweet swoony Shepard. He is younger, sexy, supportive and totally enamored of Violet. I totally adored him and felt that they were truly meant to be together. But Violet's life is never easy or uncomplicated. Connor is the love of her past that broke her heart. He left her with deep seated trust issues and made her avoid her past for a long time. But he is attractive and intriguing as well. These two men affect her life in various ways over the years causing more distractions and choices.

“If someone has the ability to make you glow in the darkness, they must be remarkable. That does not mean there is something wrong with you. It means there is something right.”

Distractions, emotions, and changes send Violet spinning into various situations that all have consequences. Things are going one way and then BAM! you are hit with something or someone else. And finally we come to a pulse pounding climax that brings it all together. There were so many twists and turns in this book that you had to pay attention. I have to admit, I am still pondering some of the events today after reading it. There was suspense, danger, mystery, romance, betrayal, heart break, and hope all mixed in. It was an intricately woven story of choices, connections, and characters. You have to avoid getting lost in the small details and try to see the big picture. An intriguing debut from J.L Brooks.

Thanks to JL Brooks for providing me with a review copy in exchange for an honest review. Will be posted at Reviews by Tammy and Kim on May 28, 2013..

Wow where to begin? J L Brooks will definitely have you flipping the pages in this one. It will toy with your mind, your emotions, your thoughts and quite possibly have you shaking your head and saying what the f***? Distractions is a very appropriate title for this book and what will quite possibly be the main character, Violet Phillips, undoing.

We start out with Violet as a teenager in the prologue, then we move forward where she has become a PHD. She is extremely intelligent and works along side her mentor, Dr. Robertson. The turn of events that take place in the beginning of the story will have you intensely glued to the pages to unravel the mystery that has been set into place. You will also be introduced to Shepard, Violet's next door neighbor, close friend and soon to be lover. I adored him and his innocence but most of all the way he cared for Violet.

"I am not here because I have to be but because I want to be."

I actually felt heartbroken, more than once, for Violet and the many many things she had to endure, the separation from Shepard, the attack from his father and the loss of her grandmother. It is during the loss of her beloved grandmother she would be brought face to face with her past and the man she loved so dearly, but who also broke her heart. Connor.

Once upon a time, he was the only future I saw............I still loved him despite my hate for him.

Oh how I despised him even though I didn't know the whole story right away. I just had that feeling he was no good.

Violet's life continues with her escaping one incident after another. She breaks down more than once and you wonder how does one person live through so much turmoil?

"How many chances does a person get before they run out?

You start to understand her undoing, her panic attacks and her desire to end it all. At the same time there is sadness in learning how she perceives herself.

When you realize that you have destroyed everything good in your life, it's easy to get lost in the dark."

So the question is, does Violet get lost in the dark? What happens to her life since she has been through so much? I was intrigued reading this story. I won't lie it was different than what I normally read, but in a good way. Lots of things happened with lots of mystery and intensity as well as some very erotic encounters. I recommend you check it out. Ms. Brooks wrote with such eloquent style which shows how extremely talented she is.

First off I had no idea what to expect when I started Distractions by JL Brooks. I will admit that after reading the first few pages I wasn't sure that this was going to be my kind of read, Oh thank goodness I was wrong!!! I'm not even sure how to articulate how truly amazing Distractions really is! J.L. Brooks, CONGRATS lady on such an amazing debut!

Distractions is an edgy love story chocked full of suspense. Just when I thought I had the story figured out…BAM! There is absolutely no way I could have predicted anything that happened with this read. Distractions had my complete and utter attention, there was so much in the storyline that was only partially told and I wanted to know it all. I didn't want to miss a thing! I was dying to know what had happened and what would happen next! Seriously the suspense was killing me :-)

I don't feel I can go into much detail regarding the characters in Distractions much without giving too much of the story away. I will say that had it not been for the brilliant characters of Distractions, the story would never have worked. Violet has led a very colourful life that has left her jaded. Will she ever be able to get past her trust issues . Shepard is her younger violin playing next door neighbour, he's alway there for her. Connor is Violet's past, but will he stay that way?? J.L. Brooks thank you for these and all of the other amazing, intense characters you created!! LOVED them! You will want to get to know Shepard and Connor, Mmmm ;-)

If you are looking for a read that is so much more than a romance, Distractions by J.L. Brooks is just what you are looking for . This nail-biting, edgy, angsty and sexy read will have your mind racing. Distractions will grab your attention and hold it until the bitter end. Just as Violet is warned, I will warn you..... Be careful not to get distracted, it may be your undoing ;-) Distractions by J.L. Brooks should be your next read.

I don't know if I can even swallow what I just read.....It was a mind blowing story of right and wrong. Every single aspect of this story surprised me. Prepare yourself for a book that is going to flip your whole world upside down! Distractions may be the one distraction that you won't want to miss!!!

I don't know what I liked more, Violet or the fact this book wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be. Ok I think I loved the fact that I had initially thought I was going to be reading a love story with some angst! So so wrong! This book was all about screwing with your head, and just when you think you are going to figure out what will happen next....BAM you're hit with something new. I think Violet is just added collateral for this story. As much as this book is centered around her, there is a bigger picture where things get cray cray!!

Another thing that intrigued me with this story were the two men who own Vy's heart. Shepard and Connor. They aren't your run of the mill book boyfriends. They actually had a "real feel" to them. The fact that Violet was unsure what to feel with each man, pulled at my heartstrings a bit. They each took a piece of my heart on their venture to Vy's. I suppose their intertwined love story aspect of this book was a bit slow....but that is what made Distractions a better story. These three individuals slowly consume you. You don't know who to love more. Shepard or Connor.

For this being a debut novel for Author JL Brooks, I am a bit blown away. Talk about an interesting and mind boggling story. Author JL Brooks mesmerized me with her writing style and creativity with the story line. I will certainly be following Author JL Brooks from here on out! Distractions had me completely enthralled in the story from the get. It is unlike any other story I have read, and I think that is why I enjoyed it so much!!

Distractions is the debut of author JL Brooks. The writing mechanics of this book were excellent. Too often recently I have read many debut novels that have needed mechanical work. There was nothing in the mechanics distracting in Distractions (ha!).

I really had no idea what to expect when I picked up this book, but was happy to do so in support of an indie author. The writing was sophisticated and the flow was seamless. Unfortunately I don’t think my words will do the author’s justice. This story took me further than I expected. It was not a typical love story, romance, new adult type book. Distractions is so much more than a romance novel. There is true story being told, filled with mystery and suspense. The characters developed gradually throughout the book right along with the plot. The only flaw (if you could call it that) I found was with the dialogue. To me it did not feel as authentic as I expected it to be.

“We are all pawns in someone else’s game.”

Violet deals with self-destructive behavior her world is turned upside down when her boss and mentor disappears. Fortunately her neighbor, Shepard is there to help put her back together. In the story, Violet is forced to face demons from her past and that alone nearly destroys her once again. “Distractions will be your undoing”. Violet becomes distracted by her past, particularly in the form of Connor, and depression that she nearly misses what is happening to her and around her. Fortunately Violet never forgets that if she is not careful it could be her undoing.

Twists, turns, romance, sexy men, mystery and suspense all wrapped in one wonderfully delivered package. “I cannot promise you that it is going to be easy, but only that it will be worth it.”

Impressive story telling. I look forward to where JL Brooks will take me next. If you love good writing, then JL Brooks must be on your list. Give it a try! 4.0 stars

Where to start... First I received this book as J.L. and I was talking it up about Cincy Wine and Sign. Cinci (as I've spelled since I was little) is my home away from home. I told her I was a reviewer and blogger and she was like here, read this and tell me what you think. What do I think? Well 1. I am honored she let me review her book. 2. Squeeee I've met the wonderfully amazing Ms. Brooks. 3. Holy shit, this is her first book? Really?

As a reviewer, I try not to give out spoilers or too many details. I really do not want to ruin THIS book for you. Violet Phillips, is one of the most amazing women I've read about in all the works I've read, which is a lot! The book starts out as learning about Violet dancing with the American gypsies. I believe gives you hint that this isn't going to be an easy smooth journey in Violet's life.

And an emotional journey is is. This book is emotional and raw. Violet loses some really important to her. She loses her mentor. She was love with Connor and then Shepard. She gets back on her feet, and bam! She loses someone else. I honestly don't know she doesn't keep from loosing it! I would be seriously 3 sheets to the wind! The title, Distractions, OMG PERFECT! It has seriously taken me days to even put what I am feeling after I've read this book in words, let alone 'print'.

The characters just seem to reach out from the pages and drag you right into the story. The character's descriptions are articulated in such a way you can see them in your mind as you are reading.

There is a whole lot of wow, wow, wow. And the ending ties it up neatly is a cute little bow. I am so glad J.L. hit me up on FB. :) This book is amazing and I am looking forward to her next work!

WOW! Just WOW! In no way did I see that coming! I knew after reading the synopsis that I was in for a little bit of mystery and a few twists, especially with a quote like " We are all pawns in some own else's game" I just had no clue how amazing this book was going to be! Not only do we get a mystery and romance, we get betrayal, seduction, and rekindling of lost love. Just when I thought I had things figured out , BAM! things would change and completely make me rethink where I thought this story was headed. I don't know about you, but I happen to love that about a book. We get to learn a little bit about Violet's past in the prologue, but DANG!! wouldn't have really put together that past, and the fact that she has to face it head on with everything else going on... wow, what a strong character. With that said, there were several times that I wish I could have reached in to the book to stop her, grab her by the shoulders and yell: NO!! STOP!! DON'T DO IT!!!! then of course the book wouldn't have been nearly as good :) At one point, I really thought I had this one figured out, how it was going to end, why people did what they did ect. Then I was smacked in the face yet again with another twist... seriously didn't see that coming... amazing...just amazing. I have to be honest with you, this book came out in May, I purchased it in July and didn't start to read it until the beginning of September....I really am kicking myself for putting this off for so long! I just finished this a few days ago and I already want to read it again. Distractions is truly a great read, and to find out that this is J.L. Brooks first book.... even more impressive! I can't wait to see what else she has in store for us in the future!!!

JL Brooks is amazing in her debut novel Distractions. I absolutely fell in love with this story. it sadly set on my kindle for to long, but I am SOOOO HAPPY I finally picked it up, such a WONDERFUL read!!! It was a mystery, thriller, romance, action packed book for me. I technically wouldn't call this a "love" triangle, but a negative love from Violet past makes an appearance, I am not a fan of him at all, his is a liar & very manipulative, but I guess some books need a bad guy right!?! Now on to the important stuff lol SHEPARD!!! OMG, what a total sex on a stick, gentleman, caring, loveing, gentle soul... he is AMAZING, I fell for him quicker than Violet did I believe. These two are just meant to be together but of course it never goes how we want it to... They have to go through hell & back before they get their damn happy ever after, but damnit they sure as hell deserved it. You have to read this amazing book, it was beautifully written & I can RAVE ENOUGH & I don't want to give anymore away either... SO GO ONE CLICK & READ!!!!

On the edge of my seat! I loved the suspense!!! The plot and writing were outstanding.

I was confused right from the beginning, but that's what kept me glued to the story. I wanted answers. Violet was broken, I guess you could say. I felt bad, the cards she was dealt. AND I didn't even know all of it. (Hmm)

Anyway we start with Shepard, (Yummy) he seemed like a sweet guy and he loved Violet, then everything goes to sh*t- in comes CONNER, I still don't understand him, I hate him, I want him to redeem himself, oh he is, no WRONG!

And let's get this straight, this is not your typical "romance," there's a story and a reason for events that take place and I was fascinated.
I loved the ending, with that being said, I still don't quite get the whole story. Maybe I need to re-read the last few chapters to see if I missed a few things.

Is there a follow book?!?!
I still can't believe Conner!

I am glad I did not give up on this book as it turned out to be a real treat. The love interest were both special and the writing was great. It did start off really bewildering me though, as it was a little confusing jumping to different timelines in the heroines life. However as I decided to read on I got sucked into the story and her relationships. Connor, seemed lush, the ideal slightly dark hero, maybe I didn't concentrate, I know what he did but I didn't understand the reason? Could he have his own story, he was yummy?
Shepherd was gorgeous, she is one lucky lady.
I am still not entirely sure I fully understood the mystery part. Maybe I read too fast and need to concentrate more on those bits instead of rushing to the romance.
I am glad I didn't give up on it because of its confusing elements as I really enjoyed this book in the end.

I wanted to love this book. I really did. But I just could not connect with it. A lot of the writing seemed stilted and unnatural. I had a hard time connecting with the characters or even understanding where they were coming from. By the end of the book I felt I had more questions than answers. It could have been because I had no connection to the story and wasn't retaining what was going on but I really couldn't tell you. This book came highly recommended to me and left me disappointed. I did feel the writing got better as the book progressed but it was too late for me to connect with by then.

Brilliant an eloquently written novel, containing intrigue, lies, murder, scapegoats and pharmaceutical espionage.

Violet is used by her mentor to complete his plan to become a pharmaceutical giant. A wealthy man without her knowledge.

Violet continues to go through so much heartache, she falls for Connie twice even though he could not be trusted. Then there's Shepard, he's younger than her, he really loves her, is he involved with her mentor?

So many people in her life, do they really care about her?

Read the book and find out, it's brilliant.
