Stay alert, Violet. Distractions will be your undoing.
"If someone has the ability to make you glow in the darkness, they must be remarkable. That does not mean there is something wrong with you. It means there is something right. Only you would believe the worst."
"... no one would listen, they can't see the truth. They are so wrapped up in trying to figure out what their opponent's next move is, they can't conceive that maybe there is someone who can see the big picture. He can see every piece on the board and every game that is played. It's not just about him shouting down; they have to let him know they can hear him, and trust him. But submission is a very hard thing for most people. They need to feel like they are in control, even if it is an illusion.
...
It could be so much easier, Violet, if they would just stop for a second and listen."
"Every fiber of my being was tied into the man holding me. The messed up part of me kept repeating that I would hurt him, yet the long forgotten goodness within shouted for me to let him love me back...."
It was mentioned in a release event that Charlie Siem was the authors muse for Sheppard. My choice for Violet is Kate Hudson.

We start out with Violet as a teenager in the prologue, then we move forward where she has become a PHD. She is extremely intelligent and works along side her mentor, Dr. Robertson. The turn of events that take place in the beginning of the story will have you intensely glued to the pages to unravel the mystery that has been set into place. You will also be introduced to Shepard, Violet's next door neighbor, close friend and soon to be lover. I adored him and his innocence but most of all the way he cared for Violet.
"I am not here because I have to be but because I want to be."
I actually felt heartbroken, more than once, for Violet and the many many things she had to endure, the separation from Shepard, the attack from his father and the loss of her grandmother. It is during the loss of her beloved grandmother she would be brought face to face with her past and the man she loved so dearly, but who also broke her heart. Connor.
Once upon a time, he was the only future I saw............I still loved him despite my hate for him.
Oh how I despised him even though I didn't know the whole story right away. I just had that feeling he was no good.
Violet's life continues with her escaping one incident after another. She breaks down more than once and you wonder how does one person live through so much turmoil?
"How many chances does a person get before they run out?
You start to understand her undoing, her panic attacks and her desire to end it all. At the same time there is sadness in learning how she perceives herself.
When you realize that you have destroyed everything good in your life, it's easy to get lost in the dark."
So the question is, does Violet get lost in the dark? What happens to her life since she has been through so much? I was intrigued reading this story. I won't lie it was different than what I normally read, but in a good way. Lots of things happened with lots of mystery and intensity as well as some very erotic encounters. I recommend you check it out. Ms. Brooks wrote with such eloquent style which shows how extremely talented she is.
