Do tych książek podchodziłam nieco sceptycznie - powieści o psie, który jest duchem? Tak koncepcja mnie nie przekonywała. I chyba moja rezerwa przeniosła się na syna, który przez pierwsze dwa rozdziały nie wykazywał szczególnego zainteresowania lekturą. Uronił nawet kilka łez, gdy czytałam mu o rozpaczy głównej bohaterki po utracie psa. Już myślałam, że będziemy musieli odłożyć te książki na później, ale syn niespodziewanie polubił Kostka i Dusię i z zapartym tchem słuchał o i przygodach.
Akcja rozgrywa się w Pechowej Woli, gdzie mieszka rodzina Pepperów. Niezwykle ekscentryczna rodzina. Biedni jak mysza kościelna i dziwaczni arystokraci rezydują w rozsypującym się dworze. Jedyną rozsądną osobę w rodzinie wydaje się być Dusia. Lord i lady Pepper spędzają dni na kolekcjonowaniu dziwacznych nakryć głowy i roztrząsywaniu nieprawdopodobnych kwestii w stylu czy pingwiny mają kolana? Gdy do rodziny dołącza znaleziony w krzewach żywokostu pies, staje się on największych przyjacielem i powiernikiem Dusi. Kostek Pepper jednak umiera i życie dziewczynki wypełnia rozpacz. Nie wie niestety, że Kostek nadal obok niej jest, ale jako duch. Do tego nie sam, wraz z nim Pechową Wolę zamieszkują duchy innych pupili, których panie lub panowie już dawno nie żyją. Kostek jest tak samo nieszczęśliwy jak Dusia i gorączkowo szuka sposobu na nawiązanie z nią kontaktu.

In this second book in the Knitbone Pepper: Ghost Dog series we have Winnie Pepper and her gang of Pepper Beloveds facing a new ordeal- what to do with the ever-growing hat collection of Lord Pepper. It didn't help things that he was ordering more and more with the idea of turning Starcross Hall into a hat exhibition of sorts and it was all going quite out of hand-
"Big boxes, small boxes, tall boxes and squat boxes, thin boxes, fat boxes, and very, very square boxes. Some came in candy colored stripy cartons and others came in black lacquered chests. They came in sacks, they came in crates, they came in trunks."
So out of hand were things that soon they had eighteen thousand, five hundred and sixty hats in what seemed like the aftermath of an explosion at a hat factory. Winnie decides that it's time she took things into her own hands, and soon Winnie and her gang of ghostly friends- Knitbone Pepper the ghost dog, Gabriel the goose, Valentine the hare, Martin the hamster, and Orlando the monkey- begin to tidy everything up to have Hats Off to Starcross ready for opening day.
All goes well till Lord Pepper decides to host the Eye of Mumbai- a yellow turban adorned with a very precious red ruby brooch- for three days as part of its world tour. The ruby has always been under the threat of a renowned robber, Magpie McCracken, and it's up to Winnie and her friends, including the Mighty Rajah- a tiger from the circus that Winnie invited to make things more exciting for Starcross Hall's visitors- to keep the ruby safe from falling into the wrong hands.
The writing is infused with humour and sprinkled with the loveliest illustrations, and the story flows along very smoothly. The author adds seemingly unimportant elements to the narrative, but they only serve to make everything even more lively that it already is. There's even a hat tip (see what I did there?) to the one and only Sorting Hat of Hogwarts!
"...the Peppers had a fine example of a wizarding hat on display. It was part of a pair. The other hat was kept at an exclusive boarding school and was very wise. However, this one was very naughty and shrieked "BADGER'S BUM!" and "PIG'S KNICKERS!" hysterically at anyone who passed."
With all the beloved main characters from the first book and a handful of new ones, The Last Circus Tiger is full of adventure, mystery and mayhem, and is a must-read if you loved the previous Knitbone Pepper book, and even if you have not picked it up yet- just set yourself up for an exciting, fun ride with the most wacky characters and dive into this delightful read!

Reading this for the second time to my 8-yr-old daughter & we’re both enjoying it even more this time round. Heart-warming, funny, good illustrations (we’ve got the hardback), it’s a good bedtime story.
My daughter could read it herself - I’d guess it’s aimed at Horrid Henry reading age - but I’m glad she doesn’t want to.

Esta serie es maravillosa para los más jóvenes de la casa y me parece que puede gustar mucho a niños de entre unos ocho y doce años, tanto chicos como chicas, y si tienen mascotas, se sentirán claramente identificados con la relación de Fito y Winnie. Los personajes son adorables y las historias de lo más entretenidas.

Phải nói là mình hơi bị thích series này luôn á. Cốt truyện dễ thương, nhân văn, hài hước mà cũng có kịch tính luôn. Dù phần này có hơi ảo một tẹo vì có sự xuất hiện của một con Ma Thú Cưng đến từ nơi khác không phải Lâu Đài Sao Xẹt, nhưng mình đánh giá sách vẫn rất cảm động và hay ho.
Ơi là trời mới tập một khen ông bà nhà Pepper tính tình xởi lởi đáng yêu dù có hơi ngáo ngơ nhưng đến tập này là mình bị quạu luôn vì cách cư xử bốc đồng của họ (vốn là đặc trưng của nhà Pepper). Không thể chính xác hơn khi dùng câu "thánh nhân đãi kẻ khù khờ" để nói về vợ chồng nhà này. Rất may mắn là họ có cô con gái Winnie thông minh, hóm hỉnh và giàu lòng nhân ái.
Cuộc phiêu lưu ở tập Con hổ xiếc cuối cùng vẫn hấp dẫn, không phải ở màn hành động mà ở những màn tình cảm. Không hiểu sao bộ sách này hơi ế ở Việt Nam dù mình đánh giá là hay, đẹp và quá phù hợp cho những độc giả thiếu nhi luôn.

Second book in the series just didn't have the same sense of magic as the first one for me, it just seemed a little more pedestrian and never got me as involved as the first one did. Another case of the sequel not being as good as the original and perhaps just leaving it as a stand alone book would have been better? There is a third one as well, I'l see if I read that one for not.

Another gripping book from Claire. Me and my son have had the most amazing time reading this book. This is such a lovely heartwarming story that gave me goosebumps. Can't wait to start the next one.

I liked this more than the first book - maybe because we already have an affinity to the characters, but also because the use of multiple ghost animals worked well in this book. They all seemed to take a more active role in the story. We also loved the idea of a circus coming to your back garden, and living in Devon, we can well imagine this as a possibility. I did spot an inconsistency - a violin turned into a cello over a couple of pages but a child would be unlikely to spot it. A great read, very enjoyable.

A young girl and her ghost companions do good deeds.
The basic story was good and the illustrations (in particular the hamster) grabbed me, but overall this book didn't hold my attention (probably because I'm not the target audience). The quality of the book (in terms of binding, etc.) was excellent.
