Rate this book
The FREAKY comic world collides with three FEARLESS kids in an explosion of fun, action, laughs and adventure!

Simon Moss is just an ordinary boy who loves action comics and wishes he were brave enough to star in one. Mossy is a gifted storyteller though and his best friend Whippet is a prolific, imaginative artist who is also fanatical about comics, the really freaky ones. It's up to the world's coolest girl, craftiest inventor and smallest explorer - Lucy Shufflebottom - to kick the boys into gear as they hunt the mysterious shadowy beast that has kidnapped Mossy's younger sister.

Can they track down the monster? And what exactly is it, anyway?!

A magical, hilarious and highly-illustrated adventure perfect for fans of TOM GATES and DORK DIARIES

Simon and his best friend Whippet love their Freaky and Fearless comics. But when Simon's dad is talking about strange things before he leaves on a 3 month business trip, and the comic store-owner warns Simon about a storm coming on a perfectly sunny day, Simon begins to worry. And what is the strange shadow he keeps seeing out of the corner of his eye?
He and Whippet follow clues, track a kidnapper, meet a tiny lunatic and discover a troll toilet and fight a monster - all in the town of Lake Shore (Lake Bore according to Simon) where they live.

This is the first in a new series for 7-9 yr olds. Choc full of black and white illustrations by Jan Bielecki , this fast, fun, and full of action story about two boys who love to write stories and draw is only going to get more and more creative!

I'd never heard of these books before they were in a blogger newsletter. I liked the idea of them straight away and couldn't wait to make a start on them.
I love how Freaky and Fearless: How to Tell a Tall Tale has its own set of comics inside, Freaky, and Fearless, and best friends Mossy and Whippet like different ones. The writing style of the book itself was very unique. We get to see the comic strip itself, along with the books own story, before ending on another comic strip.

The story begins with Mossy saying goodbye to his father as he leaves for a business trip, leaving Mossy with more babysitting duties but also instructions to keep his father up to date on what is going on in the comic. He soon finds himself in a very sticky situation when his little sister disappears.

I enjoyed following this duo, along with Lucy, to track the Snotticus that has taken Mossy's sister. As the story progresses we see how practical Lucy is with her bag full of inventions. We also learn of a talent that Mossy has, he is a Teller, able to think of a story and tell it, anyone within hearing distance finds themselves in a trance.

Freaky and Fearless: How to Tell a Tall Tale was a quick read for me but one that had me turning the pages needing to know how it all ended. The character within the pages were easy to like and 'm looking forward to reading the next installment

Fantastic that his skill is casting a spell over others by hynotising them with storytelling, but i just could not get into it at all. One of those that did not work on me as an adult but may be enjoyed by the kids it's aimed at.

First in this series was an average read, whilst not terrible, it was over all fairly forgettable, to the point where some months from reading you would be struggling to give a succinct summary. An entertaining enough read but certainly not spectacular.

I received this book for free via Goodreads First Reads.

I admit I am not in the age range that the book caters for. I am a kid at heart at times and books like this help keep me that way.

It is a fun novel that would really appeal to kids that are obsessed with comic books. They play a big part here and maybe that fact would help a certain type of child progress onto books from comics. The illustrations are wonderfully comic like and give me a sense of nostalgia too.

The story contains a few mysteries, adventure, humour and most of all, snot. I think children of a certain age will like the combination of all of these as they are presented. It also leads on nicely to any sequels which I would read as I really enjoyed this one. It is a fun book I would recommend for parents to get their kids for miserable rainy days during schools holidays. Reading it might just make them days a lot better!

This book was received via a Goodreads giveaway.

My son and I read this book together and we really, really enjoyed it. The story follows Mossy and his best friend Whippet, both huge fans of comics. Mossy become aware, whilst out buying his favourite comic, that someone or something may be following him. Events take a turn for the worse and the boys are left needing to track down the mysterious thing. Lucy Shufflebottom then enters the story and helps the boys in tracking the thing.

The illustrations that are throughout the book add a wonderful element to the story that helps the younger reader to picture the events taking place. The book is fast-paced and certainly held the attention of my son throughout, he kept begging for another chapter, then another! The story is obviously setting up to be a series of book which is great as I shall certainly be keeping my eyes peeled for the next one in the series!

A very well deserved 5 stars!
