I love the prayers of Henry Thornton, and was delighted to find a relatively new copy of his devotions. But I am disappointed in the injudicious editing of James Bell. He has tried to update Thornton’s petitions by specifically inserting American details (President and Congress of the United States) in place of general mentions of leaders and authorities, and thus limited its comfortable application to other nationalities in a way Thornton would have abhorred. He also neglected to modernize the punctuation, which would have been a real improvement for readers and pray-ers. And there are numerous small errors missed by his proofreaders (e.g., ever for every). I would be unable to rate Thornton’s work highly enough, but Bell’s handling of it takes this edition down a notch for me. Still a great help for serious pray-ers as they begin and end each day.
