More like a 2.5. It was cute, but nothing special. This book actually reminded me of Jennifer Crusie's Bet Me (which I LOVE) because it had:
(a) a completely ridiculous meet-cute; (b) a physically hotter than hot hero (Tony) with a "curvy" size 14 heroine who is a super smarty (Heather); (c) said heroine's relative is getting married, and she must fit into a too-small bridesmaid dress; (d) there is a preconceived "game over" for each relationship (coincidentally, ~one month for each); and (e) the hero has a poisonous relative situation...
(i) not as funny execution (no real "laugh out loud" moments, but sure...plenty of smiles and quirked lips); (ii) a hero who is hot, but not nearly hot enough in the personality department (I'll expand on this later); and (iii) a heroine who is objectively smart, but is also something of a doormat who brushes off the hero's apologies (in multiple situations) when they are clearly warranted.
It's hard to rate a book beyond "this was cute enough" if you're not completely sold on the main characters of the story. That is unfortunately the case for me. I like zany plots, kooky relatives, outlandish meet-cutes, and hot guys with average girls, all of which this book delivered; it just did not deliver them in anything more than a watered-down "this was decent" way.
The author makes a point of showing how competent and smart Heather is, but I just didn't think she was competent or smart in standing up for herself when Tony said things that hurt her. They'd have arguments, he'd say something mean, and she'd leave the scene. After he realizes he's been a dickwad and seeks her out to apologize, Heather unfailingly cuts it short and/or cuts him off, oftentimes making some sort of excuse for him. He doesn't want to take the excuse, but then she's all "let's just leave this be - bygones," etc etc., to which he has no choice but to acquiesce.
And why does he feel the need to apologize so often?
Well, he's kind of an arrogant jerk. Now, I know that's what his character is from the beginning, but I really did not expect him to continue having arrogant jerk moments when I was already three-quarters through the book. He's lived a carefree, playboy bachelor's life - I get that. I just don't get why he's so careless with how he treats Heather, who did give him the huge chunk of money that enables him to pursue his dream (of becoming an entrepreneur and buying the local bar and grill they both patronize). I just think that he had miles to travel in order to redeem/reform himself enough for a believable and satisfying HEA with Heather, and in the end, I'm not quite sure if he did. There are a number of times when he definitely seems like a nice guy, but sometimes it's unclear to me how much that is his being a genuinely nice guy and his whole charming-the-pants-(literally?)-off people persona (see next paragraph).
Also, there are a number of times when Heather is thinking about Tony and his complexities, and she realizes he's always charming as sort of a defense mechanism from letting anyone get too close. I don't know...this wasn't really convincing to me because I didn't see it myself; this felt like too much of an author's telling us and not showing us what the character is all about (which doesn't always bother me, but did in this case).
Okay, so that was my mini-rant. With that said, I really do think the premise and story are cute. I liked the characters in general, but I just didn't think the author took them where they could and should have gone.
I'd say 2.5 stars because it was better than "meh" but not quite a solid "I liked it."
Another one of my favorite books by Jane Graves. I have to say that this one was way better than my expectations. It was cute, funny, and very sweet. Loved it!
This is second in a series, but the books are only tangentially related. We saw Tony in the first book, but he makes a clean break in this one beginning with a career change so we don't see the others even a little bit in this story.
This was a very strong romance with wonderful characters that pretty much hits all the right romantic beats. Which makes this harder to write than I thought it would be. It was very good and I laughed out loud more than once (the banter is fantastic and Graves slips some very funny things into her characters' internal musings) but it really was quite standard when all is said. So I'm having a hard time finding something to pull forward in my review.
Sigh. I give up. Transparent writing, good plot, interesting characters, laugh-out-loud funny, excellent pacing, but nothing terribly stand-out despite all of that makes me want to give four stars. But you know what? I couldn't wait to read more, I was deeply engaged in the story, and I'd be thrilled to read another just like it so I'm going with my gut and giving it all five stars.
A note about Steamy: There are three or so explicit sex scenes of moderate length, putting this in the middle of my steam tolerance. This aspect of the story was also very well done and fit well into the emotional arc of the characters.
Better than average chicklit/romance thing. It doesn’t hurt that this features some of my very favorite Awesomely Stupid Plot Devices: Whoops! Did We Just Get Married? and For Various Awkward Reasons, Let’s Pretend We’re Really In A Really Real Relationship. Oh sweet cliché! You are better than the brownies I just baked, and they are, if I may say, some damn fine brownies.
Anyway, the other thing that distinguished this book from the herd was its heroine, who’s the opposite of flighty: a serious, no-nonsense CPA whose best quality is her cool, steady competence—and it’s this very quality that first makes the flaky manslut hero fall in love with her. Yes! First, how great is it to see a romantic heroine appreciated for her smarts—take that, Mr. “Kiss Away Her Competence” from First Date! Second, it’s nice having competence recognized as an attractive quality, period. Being really really good at something = super sexy. I’m always surprised this doesn’t come up more.
Graves’ hero is more standard-issue: he’s supposed to be Mr. Sexy Sex Man, but his bag of tricks seems to mostly include things like fur-lined handcuffs and whipped cream, which, a) only really vanilla people think are kinky, and b) seriously, whipped cream? Chocolate syrup? I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN THAT. Someone please explain. Personally, I don’t want my dessert foods to taste like sex, and I don’t want my sex to taste like dessert foods, either. You’re diminishing both pleasures by combining them!
Okay, that’s a big enough overshare. What I’m trying to say is that despite some flaws, this annoyed me way less than most books of its type, which from me can probably be considered a ringing endorsement. I mean…it made my bus ride pretty entertaining. Sometimes, that’s everything.
This is my first novel by Ms Graves and I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the characters she brought to life so well. The setting jets from small-town Texas to Vegas and back again and our characters stay true to their nature through it all, growing and learning so they can finally get to where they need to be. As I read the book…I smiled, I laughed out loud, I sniffled a bit, and then I finished with a big ole grin on my face. Bravo and well done to Ms Graves.
Heather Montgomery is a planner, an accountant, organized, and goes by-the-book. She’s happy, well-adjusted, has a good job and a 401K. She’s intelligent, neat, pleasant looking, has a nice healthy size 14 figure, and her family is proud of her. Well, OK…her Mom would be prouder if she was all the above and married. But Heather’s looking for a neat, caring, well-dressed, intelligent man with a good humor—she’s definitely not interested in a good time guy like the man at the bar. She’s not going to settle…even though she is coming up on the big 3-0. But she’s not worried…really…maybe starting to wonder…NO, she’s fine. Or at least she will be once her cousin Regina’s wedding is over. Petite, blonde, catty, social-climbing Regina purposefully ordered Heather’s dress a size smaller than needed—just to make Heather diet before her high-society wedding with the ugliest, salmoniest, trendiest bridesmaid dresses on earth! The next month will be horrible, but at least Heather gets the free bridesmaids’ trip to Vegas! Savoring her drink in McMillan’s, she figures just watching the airhead blonde bridesmaid posse should be entertaining.
Tony McCaffrey is a social, sexy, fun-loving, good time player. He likes his women blonde, busty, and not too bright. He’s got all the female company a bachelor could ask for and only has to smile and choose to get all the sex he wants…the perfect single man’s life. And it just gets better--he’s finished with his repo-man job! Because he’s finally found something he should be really good at—he’s buying McMillan’s bar! Just three more days and the $20K loan from his friend and the bar will be all his. Ah, the perfect life. Until his friend’s wife balks and he’s suddenly short the cash he needs for closing. The only solution he can think of is a quick trip to Vegas and praying for luck.
Heather’s accountant brain understands odds quite well; she’s just not into gambling. Until these two meet in Vegas and Heather recognizes Tony, although he certainly hasn’t ever noticed her. He looks a little down and he explains his problem. Then Heather decides to help him out. One thing leads to another. Heather wins the 20K Tony needs, he takes her out to celebrate, they have a little too much to drink and BOOM…the next morning they wake up together…MARRIED!
These two have a lot of personal issues to work through, both together and alone. Learning to look beneath the masks we all wear in our public persona is a hard and painful process. Following these two through their journey was sometimes sad and sometimes humorous. I enjoyed the trip.
It has one of the most written and maybe most look after plot, and l like to read it. Sometimes l like the book, sometimes l didn't, such as this one.
My main complain based on l didn't feel neither emotions not chemistry. Heroine was very sweet and her characterization was good, on the other hand l couldn't say same thing for hero. I am sorry to say this but imo, despite of author's hard working to make him a friendly and considerate man, he just came across a shallow character.
Overall, writing was smooth but l didn't like story development and characterization.
Kitaba ba-yil-dimm tek kelimeyle enfesti.
Çareyi Vegas'a gitmekte ve kumarla eksik parayi tamamlada bulur.
Tony; Heather'in gorunenden fazlasi oldugunu farkediyor.

I just love when a book turns out to be even better than I expected. And that's what happened with "Tall Tales and Wedding Veils". I expected it to be a very light-minded and romantic "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" kind of book, but it turned out to be much more. Tony is a real charmer. He is fun to be around, he knows how to have a good time & he definitely knows his way around women. And then there is Heather, dependable & serious-minded CPA with some body & hair issues. Those two may seem completely incompatible, if not for the fact that they complement each other. Read it, you will not regret!
I loved that book! It was a sweet, funny story wbout a size 14 girl marrying in Vegas a gorgeous man and agreeing to staying married to him for a month. I loved the nice, sexy scenes, the guy that was also nice and decent besides handsome and I really loved (quirky me!) the way I cried my eyeballs out in the last 50 pages. An excellent, humorous story but with depth and emotion in the end.
This is a solid "I liked it!" three stars, not a "Gee, it sure had some issues" three stars. I did have to take the story with a hefty grain of salt--magical slot machines wins that don't get eaten up by taxes; slob+neatnik relationship with no real issues--but the frothiness worked.
Read this back in 2011. Another story about drunken marriage at Vegas.
This light romance started with a CPA, Heather Montgomery who was forced once again to be the bridesmaid whenever someone in her big family got married, and this is the time whereby she got repeatedly reminded by Aunt Bev on the fact that she is already hitting 30 with no man in her life. This time is cousin Regina's wedding and she was whisk off to Las Vegas for the bachelorette party along with the groups of bridesmaid.
Tony McCaffrey is in the verged of buying the local sport bar McMillan's, only to have his friend withdrew from lending him 20 grand. In a whim, he decided to try his luck by gambling off in Vegas. When he was giving up hope and waiting at the elevator lobby, he came across the half drunk Heather who recognized him from McMillan because he's such a catch. Tony though can't recognize her, but he spilled out about his problem with the funding to buy McMillan. Heather showed him the chip that she found by the lobby and offered to help win the 20 grand.
I wondered where did Heather got all her lady luck, but eventually she did won the 20 grand for Tony. Tony hired a limousine to celebrate the night with Heather under the sight of the jealous Regina, who can't believe what she just saw.
The next morning, Tony woke up fully clothed on bed next to Heather and was shocked to find out their marriage license on the table. He was contemplating how to deal with her when Heather woke up and stunned. She quickly gathered up the fact that she had too much to drink and didn't realize what she had done. She decided to get an annulment as soon as possible, much to the relieve Tony. Little did she know that the night before, she had called to announce her marriage to her mother. Let the disaster begins!
In order not to get Heather embarrassed in front of her family and relatives, Tony kindly volunteer to act as her husband for a month and waited until after Regina's wedding to file for divorce. Initially, Heather disagree to lie to her family, but after seeing her mother being so happy and able to tell Aunt Bev that her daughter finally married, she can't bear letting her mother down.
This is a predictable story of how a plain Jane get the playboy to settle down. Heather always got teased by her relatives about how she still not married at 30. When she ended up with Tony, her cousin Regina can't stop trying to figure out the sinister plot that she is convince lurking somewhere behind the facade. The plot is generic with nothing surprising.
Jane graves'in abartılı yalanlar aceleci duvaklar kitabını mutlaka öneririm.
TALL TALES AND WEDDING VEILS is the story of Heather, an uptight accountant with frizzy hair, and Tony, a less-than-endearing playboy, who meet for the first time in Las Vegas. They gamble. Get rich. Lose the money. Get richer the second time around. Get drunk. Get married. Agree to stay married for just one month and fake happily ever after for Heather's families' sake. That's pretty much their story in a nutshell.
If I hadn't just seen "What Happens in Vegas" in the theater, I probably would have enjoyed this book more. It reached DIK status on the allaboutromance.com website, so I HAD to run right out and buy it. However, the plots of TTWD and WHIV were just too similar and I couldn't help comparing them. The movie was MUCH funnier, the characters were more interesting and the reasons for the h/h to stay married made more sense to me. Not to mention, I am a big fan of Ashton Kutcher and his boyish charm!
When I read this book, I tried to like Tony. I honestly did. But frankly, I never warmed up to him. Tony was a real horn dog as well as a redneck slob with a beer bottle collection to boot. He would sleep with anything that looked sideways at him and (IMO) he never really redeemed himself or deserved Heather. I especially hated the part where Tony is making out with a hot and horny flight attendant in the living room while Heather is sitting in the next room, listening. She tried to do more than her part in saving their "fake" marriage, although I was never clear what her attraction to Tony was other than his looks. Heather's spoiled cousin, Regina, did give me a few good laughs and I only wish she had a bigger part in the story.
If you haven't seen the movie version with this plot, I would say give the book a shot. I personally like romantic comedies laugh-out-loud funny with a sweet ending, but this one didn't do it for me.
Heather'in kuzeni evlenecektir, üstelik parti Vegas'tadır.
Buradan Nemesis Kitap'a sesleniyorum.
Her cousin is getting married and Heather is going to Vegas for the bridesmaid trip. Should be fun, except that Regina is not known for her kindness and ordered ugly bridesmaid dresses and a size or two too small for Heather. But the weekend will take a turn that nobody expected, especially not our heroine.
Tony gave his two weeks notice as a repossession agent and is now ready to buy a bar and grill. But when his financing plan fall apart, Tony must find money and the only way to find it in such a short time : gambling in Vegas and hope to win enough for his dream.
When Heather see Tony at the casino, she recognize the pretty man she often see at the bar she patronize where she lives (in Texas). They never talked before. She's a curvy woman and he's a player who only date bimbos. But Heather will be his good luck charm that evening and after a few too many drinks, they wake up the next day married. No problem, they just have to get an annulment, right ? Well, that could have been the case if Heather haven't called her mother when they said I do and before her family welcomed them when they returned in Plano. Now they have to pretend the marriage is real and share the same house (his bachelor pad) for a month.
To explain the difference between Tony and Heather; he's a dreamer, and she's a doer. At the beginning, Tony is such a shallow man. He was infuriating at time. But it also allow the heroine to shine, because she doesn't hesitate to speak her mind. She's self-conscious about her weight but she have a supportive mother (it was refreshing since it's usually the opposite with curvy heroines) and it doesn't take all the space in her life. She's proactive and a pretty efficient woman and it helped the hero a lot with his new business and made him see that there's more to women than just their bodies.
The book was fun and I liked seeing the MC fall in love but I would have probably rated it higher if the hero wasn't such a superficial guy for most of if.
I had never heard of Janes Graves before but after I read the review at RRR I couldn't resist entering the giveaway there and I was lucky enough to win.
I very much agree that at first glance there's nothing really new here plot wise. Serious, sensible, intelligent career woman meets rakish, laid back, carefree future bar owner on a night out in Vegas. She helps him raise enough money to buy his bar and on a wild celebration night they end up having a Vegas marriage. The characters however are what makes the story stand out for me and both Tony and Heather were people that I found interesting and engaging.
They both decide to have an annulment the day after, but when Tony discovers that Heather will be humiliated in front of her family, and since she did help him with buying the bar, he decides to maintain their charade of a marriage till her cousins wedding in a month time.
Things won’t go as easy as he thinks though as Heather is forced to move in with him, her family decides to celebrate their union with a surprise party at his bar that leaks the news to all his friends and employees and he and Heather's relationship truly evolves from a temporary affair to a true friendship.
Despite the fact that they may seem like stereotypes in the beginning they become real characters and there's no sudden makeover or changes in both of them to make for sunny happy ending. Heather does become more confident in her body and Tony decides his career as a playboy is over but that's it. It's quite funny to see how they start to develop feelings towards each other and the funny dialogues between them. Heather may be the less experienced but she gives as good as she gets.
I closed the books with a satisfied sigh and I think I'll be looking for more titles by Graves in the future.
This was a really good story with strong heroine and very likable hero. They come across as believable normal people with all their flows, quirks and enduring traits. On the surface the hero, Tony, is happy go lucky lady’s man with a charming smile. He is very close to have his dream of owning a neighborhood bar a reality. When at the last minute the deal almost fall apart, Tony is devastated. He needs $20,000 by Monday or the dream would stay a dream. He sees the only chance to get the money is to fly to Las Vegas and win big. This dumb idea could only come from desperation and his only hope is for some kind miracle. The miracle came from an unexpected source: Heather who is in Las Vegas for a bachelorette party for her cousin. Heather is up tide, clean freak CPA. She and Tony are from the same town moreover she frequents his bar for a drink with her girlfriend but Tony, the lady’s man, didn’t even remember her. Their first encounter in Vegas started chain of events that led to their quick marriage, and subsequent regret. Or maybe not a regret?
I started this book last night, thinking I'd read a bit before bed. Uhm, yeah. I finally put it down when I was having to close one eye to keep the letters from blurring.
He's a hunk. She's a size 14. He's never paid any attention to her though they frequent the same regulars bar. When they run into each other in Vegas, they end up drunk and married. This could so easily have been a cheesy story, but it doesn't because the author understands how to motivate her characters so that every decision they make feels authentic rather than contrived. Not one misstep in their motivations. Not once did I roll my eyes and think, "Oh, puh-leeze," which certainly would have happened with a lesser author. Given the premise of the story, I rather expected that to happen. I was delighted when it didn't.
Jane Graves is an author I intend to explore further.
I actually bought the electronic version of this book for my wife as she enjoys RomComs. I had been needing a very light book to read however, so since I'll read anything no matter the demographics the author aimed the story at, I gave this a go.
Is it super predictable like the RomCom flicks in Hollywood? Yup. Is it a story we've all heard before? Yup. Is there an ounce of suspense? Not a drop. You know how this book will end during the first chapter. What it is however, is a light-hearted book that is a very fun read.
Young women to mature will enjoy it. As a man, I didn't exactly fall in love with it, but I'm looking at the book for what it is. And it`s not bad at all. Check out the synopsis and read it. Book gets my recommendation
I had high hopes about this book… But I was very disappointed with it ! I know its “just a story/book” but the hero and the heroine got too much on my nerves and I had a hard time reading the whole book and skimmed the last 20-25 pages ! The “hero” was quite shallow and immature (on many levels but mostly how he viewed women) and the “heroine” was in a way also shallow and immature but also somewhat judgmental and a “little” patronizing and meddling among many other things! So in some ways the couple were perfect for each other…. But mostly not so compatible!

A very sweet, entertaining love story, good dialog and characters. I enjoyed this author's writing and will try more of her books.
Heather Montgomery is 29, attractive in an understated way, responsible, a successful accountant and, to her mother’s ever-growing despair, single. Here she is, approaching her 30th birthday without a single prospect in sight, suffering through yet another ugly dress fitting, this time as the obligatory family bridesmaid to snooty, rich cousin Regina, and dreading the weekend bridesmaid trip to Vegas with the slim, gorgeous bride and her other four equally gorgeous sorority sister bridesmaids.
Tony McCaffrey is a man who knows how to have a good time. With his movie star looks, bone-melting smile and Texas charm, he’s a favorite with the ladies…many ladies. He likes them tall, slim, blonde, beautiful and not too intelligent. He’s about to realize his dream of buying his favorite watering hole, McMillan’s when his loan falls through. Out of options and, with the closing on Monday, Tony has no choice but to fly to Vegas for the weekend and try to win the money he needs to make his dream come true.
In the lobby of her Vegas hotel, Heather is shocked to find herself standing next to Tony McCaffrey, the man she secretly fantasizes about during her regular visits to McMillan’s Bar and Grill back home but knows she could never attract. Tony, of course, doesn’t remember ever seeing Heather before but when her good luck charm wins him the $20,000 he needs to fulfill his dream he whisks her off in a limo for a champagne celebration, never intending more than one night of fun. Conservative, by-the-book, Heather and laid-back, playboy Tony are both equally horrified to awaken the next morning in bed together with a marriage certificate on the dresser. They’re a little fuzzy about the prior evening’s champagne-induced events however, since they’re both still dressed they know the marriage hasn’t been consummated and are relieved to agree to a simple, uncomplicated annulment…until the fateful moment when Heather remembers that post-wedding phone call to her mother.
While on the surface this particular storyline would appear to be light and predictable, in reality Graves has created a rich, complex story of emotional growth, acceptance and forgiveness. Tony and Heather are imbued with layers that are not readily apparent and their journey of self-discovery and growth is funny, poignant, steamy and ultimately satisfying.
