Fourteen year old Willa Harper dreams of becoming an event rider. Up to now she's had to be satisfied with making up stories about riding success. But a chance encounter with the thoroughbred of her dreams may change her life as she knows it... With the help of her former Olympian grandfather who has never been the same since the passing of his wife, Willa is set on turning Pocket Rocket into an event horse. As challenge after challenge presents itself, it seems dreams of eventing success are destined to remain just that. But Willa refuses to give up, and as she and Rocket continue to work hard they develop a partnership that is quite magical. Maybe, just maybe, they are going to succeed after all...
I really enjoyed this book. I have read a lot of horse books recently and this one is defiantly in the top 5. I liked how the author did not let Willa win in her first year, like many of the horse books we see today. However, as much as I like this book it had its flaws. One of them being that the main girl who rescued a neglected horse wins a International Championship, almost every book I read has the main charter winning something big at the end. I get that it makes for a happy ending , but can't they not win for once and learn a valuable lesson that is ok to lose some times and that you don't win everything! As much as I felt this was a good book, due to the winning thing, I give it a 4 out of 5 stars
I have probably as already written a review for this book as this is my second time reading it. I loved it just as much as I did the first time around and (like all of the other series written by this author) wish there was a sequel.
This is an excellent book for younger and older horse fans alike.
I loved the characters and the plot. The theme of beating the odds and hard work prevailing, as is found in many horse related stories, is so well developed here that it is not obnoxious in the least. I’d love to read more about Willa and Rocket.
This book is absolutely brilliant especially if your an equestrian! The only fault is there is only one book in the series which is sad 😢 but it doesn't change the fact that this book is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't have horses!
Ugh godawful. Filled with tons of spelling errors and simple writing. Not to mention the story is FAR-FETCHED, ridiculous, and lacks a fleshed out story. No character development, stupid plot...this is one of those bad horse books people warn you about.
A well written debut story about a young girl and her small brave horse who together ultimately triumph despite seemingly impossible difficulties. The author clearly has a good knowledge of her subject and she presents technical aspects of horsemanship seamlessly into the story. A good, absorbing, pleasurable read.
I was interested and involved in this story of a young woman and her thoroughbred horse. I recommend Ms Wilkenson's novels to anyone who loves horses and especially OTTBs!
